[00:00:08.130]from the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska
[00:00:11.190]to recruit and train 10 residents of rural Nebraska
[00:00:14.880]to be school psychologists.
[00:00:16.500]So with our training model,
[00:00:18.660]this grow your own approach,
[00:00:20.460]we have 10 students
[00:00:22.410]who've been endorsed by the schools
[00:00:24.540]who are committed to being in the rural communities,
[00:00:27.720]and so at the end of this training program,
[00:00:29.370]we'll have 10 students trained and ready to go
[00:00:31.830]to help provide mental health services
[00:00:34.260]to those communities straight away,
[00:00:36.570]with a greater likelihood
[00:00:37.620]that they'll stay there and impact those students.
[00:00:40.920]What's really unique to me about this project
[00:00:42.780]is that we've been able to address
[00:00:45.480]some of the biggest barriers
[00:00:46.890]to school psychology training for rural residents.
[00:00:49.440]Every single course is virtual.
[00:00:51.090]Then this allows our students
[00:00:52.350]to stay in their home communities
[00:00:54.510]for the duration of the training program.
[00:00:56.880]We also have transformed our curriculum
[00:00:59.550]from a three-year program to a four-year program.
[00:01:02.490]This allows them to maintain their full-time employment
[00:01:05.340]and reduce the cost
[00:01:07.620]associated with coming to graduate school.
[00:01:09.540]And then the third thing that I think makes this unique
[00:01:11.850]is tuition and fees are completely covered
[00:01:14.010]for this cohort of students,
[00:01:16.350]and so we've really made it cost effective for them.
[00:01:19.440]This is a very viable service
[00:01:22.320]that we can be offering
[00:01:23.910]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
[00:01:26.280]to the state community
[00:01:27.960]that's going to address a really significant need.
[00:01:32.100]Children's mental health services
[00:01:34.320]are a critical part of raising a child
[00:01:37.920]who's going to be healthy and successful and well.
[00:01:40.650]We're gonna provide services for dozens of students
[00:01:43.290]every single year in these districts.
[00:01:44.940]That's hundreds of students every single year
[00:01:47.430]who will benefit from a highly-trained school psychologist.
[00:01:51.030]What I have learned from other states
[00:01:53.400]is that once we train people
[00:01:55.650]to be really effective school psychologists
[00:01:59.070]in those communities, they stay there,
[00:02:01.620]and I will go back to the states
[00:02:04.080]10 and 20 years later, and they're still there.
[00:02:05.910]They're still practicing.
[00:02:06.990]They're still benefiting kids.
