- [00:00:04.950]Hello, and welcome to the June edition
- [00:00:07.350]of "Inside Nebraska Business".
- [00:00:09.540]The university set a record in May
- [00:00:11.490]by conferring more than 3,600 degrees.
- [00:00:14.460]Congratulations, graduates.
- [00:00:16.530]Go Big Red!
- [00:00:18.690]For recent bachelor degree graduates of UNL, UNO,
- [00:00:22.977]and UNK in the last five years,
- [00:00:25.380]the college launched a new Graduate Advantage Program.
- [00:00:29.400]Students save 15% on tuition
- [00:00:32.820]while pursuing an online master's degree
- [00:00:35.610]in business analytics or supply chain management.
- [00:00:39.180]This program provides
- [00:00:41.070]a technically skilled workforce in Nebraska
- [00:00:44.130]while removing financial barriers.
- [00:00:47.190]We hosted our annual Advisory Board Awards luncheon
- [00:00:50.490]in Hawks Hall in April.
- [00:00:52.590]Board Chair Lisa Smith and I presented the awards
- [00:00:56.130]to those leading the future of business.
- [00:00:59.790]Blake Lawrence earned the Young Alumni Award.
- [00:01:02.850]2009, I was a starting linebacker at Nebraska.
- [00:01:05.100]I was a black shirt.
- [00:01:06.030]This is something I'd always dreamed of.
- [00:01:08.790]So, you know, woke up one day a starting linebacker,
- [00:01:10.740]and I went to bed that night
- [00:01:12.120]knowing I could never play football again.
- [00:01:14.490]I had suffered four concussions in a little over a year,
- [00:01:19.410]and I had to figure out who I was
- [00:01:21.030]'cause I was no longer the football player.
- [00:01:23.220]And the College of Business helped me
- [00:01:27.930]figure out my next part of my life.
- [00:01:30.000]I stood up in the middle of class. I said, "I have an idea."
- [00:01:32.940]And Sam Nelson, in that moment, could have said,
- [00:01:34.957]"Blake, sit down. Shut up. I'm teaching," okay. He didn't.
- [00:01:39.690]He sat down and said, "Tell us your idea."
- [00:01:43.980]That day I found out
- [00:01:46.050]that I was no longer the football player.
- [00:01:47.610]I could be Blake Lawrence, the entrepreneur.
- [00:01:50.280]And I'm telling you guys,
- [00:01:51.270]everyone in this room that's a faculty member,
- [00:01:52.770]that cares about this school, that you have people out there
- [00:01:56.040]that are trying to find those stories
- [00:01:58.200]and empower the kids that come here
- [00:02:00.480]to figure out who they are.
- [00:02:02.160]The Corporate Leadership Award went to Carson Group.
- [00:02:05.580]Believe it or not, this all started out of 11 Abel,
- [00:02:09.720]cold calling out of a phone book in 1983.
- [00:02:13.140]As Jenny and I travel around the world,
- [00:02:15.630]and they say, you know, "Where you from?" "Nebraska."
- [00:02:17.850]And they're like, "Nebraska?"
- [00:02:19.020]We call it the Echo State.
- [00:02:20.250]And I said, "What you don't understand is, like,
- [00:02:22.500]we are the center of the universe.
- [00:02:24.840]Everything starts here and emanates out."
- [00:02:28.290]Tony Goins received the Business Leadership Award.
- [00:02:31.710]We've gotta make sure that we do what's necessary
- [00:02:33.810]to help local businesses expand
- [00:02:35.820]and make sure that we all support our local businesses
- [00:02:39.390]because talent in our workforce
- [00:02:40.980]is still mission-critical for us to be successful.
- [00:02:43.740]We have to retain the students
- [00:02:45.360]that are a part of the university system
- [00:02:47.130]and ensure that they know
- [00:02:48.270]about the opportunities here in our state.
- [00:02:50.430]And Sid Dinsdale was honored
- [00:02:52.560]with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
- [00:02:54.720]To me, a family business is the best ownership possible
- [00:02:57.990]if the family and the business is capable.
- [00:03:00.240]And the reason is very simple. No one cares as much.
- [00:03:03.060]I, and the family before me, have been so fortunate
- [00:03:05.280]to have people in our business as partners
- [00:03:06.960]and staff who become like family.
- [00:03:09.210]It's just so gratifying to experience
- [00:03:11.610]the success of people in our organization
- [00:03:13.470]as they earn greater and greater responsibilities.
- [00:03:16.230]This is one of the reasons we are built to grow;
- [00:03:18.150]because we want to give people opportunity.
- [00:03:20.580]Our honorees join an impressive list of recipients,
- [00:03:24.450]including Warren Buffet, Alice Dittman, and Jane Miller.
- [00:03:29.820]They each embody Husker power
- [00:03:32.880]and show what a Nebraska degree can do
- [00:03:36.090]in the ever-changing world of business.
- [00:03:38.850]Together, we are Nebraska business.
- [00:03:42.630]With your support, we can continue to build business leaders
- [00:03:46.050]like only Nebraska can.
