- [00:00:04.980]Hi, I'm Guy Trainin and this is
- [00:00:08.700]Teaching World Language with Technology from Tech Edge.
- [00:00:12.630]And I'm Chrystal Liu, I'm the word language specialist
- [00:00:16.050]at the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:19.650]And today we're gonna talk about the Blooket.
- [00:00:22.410]And Blooket is a website that you can use across classrooms
- [00:00:29.370]and it has a variety of games,
- [00:00:31.560]it is somewhat similar to Kahoot!,
- [00:00:33.600]and to Quizlet, and a few others,
- [00:00:35.430]but it also has some interesting features
- [00:00:37.560]that are different.
- [00:00:38.790]So, walk us through some of them.
- [00:00:41.880]Yeah, the most interesting thing is like,
- [00:00:44.760]as teachers, we always create a lot of word list,
- [00:00:49.320]and for students vocabulary, for students to practice,
- [00:00:52.500]we might have an account at Quizlet.
- [00:00:55.500]So, if you go to your Quizlet,
- [00:00:57.547]and if you have an Quizlet account,
- [00:01:00.570]you can import all your sets into Blooket.
- [00:01:04.290]So, now I'm doing that.
- [00:01:05.520]I do have a Quizlet account
- [00:01:07.050]that I haven't used in a long time
- [00:01:08.760]because I have other favorites,
- [00:01:10.710]but, I can look for my Quizlet.
- [00:01:13.927]So, I know that my Quizlet had a title,
- [00:01:17.640]and of course, you've gotta give it permission
- [00:01:19.620]to have access to your Quizlet,
- [00:01:21.180]it cannot do that without.
- [00:01:22.920]And now, you're saying import from Quizlet,
- [00:01:25.920]and I'm saying my Quizlets.
- [00:01:29.040]And it's asking me to log in.
- [00:01:31.170]So, I will log in to my Quizlet.
- [00:01:35.310]And you can see my Quizlets,
- [00:01:37.200]and this is the one I'm interested in, all right.
- [00:01:40.410]And so now, I'm saying let's find my Quizlet.
- [00:01:45.690]Yeah, we need to find this one, and then, okay.
- [00:01:50.637]And then-
- [00:01:51.660]There is a sharing button.
- [00:01:53.400]Shares are-
- [00:01:54.480]Oh, okay, so, let me find a different one,
- [00:01:56.640]I don't think I can share this specific one.
- [00:01:59.760]So, let me go to all of mine,
- [00:02:03.270]my library and say, Emergent Literacy.
- [00:02:07.200]And,
- [00:02:10.170]now I can share- Share, yes.
- [00:02:15.450]Three dots.
- [00:02:16.590]Three dots?
- [00:02:17.670]We have export. Export.
- [00:02:20.670]And now, I can export it.
- [00:02:23.250]Copy the text. Copy text.
- [00:02:26.670]And now, I can
- [00:02:30.300]go to-
- [00:02:31.868]Blooket, and paste again.
- [00:02:33.172]Blooket, and-
- [00:02:34.613]Next step.
- [00:02:35.580]Next step.
- [00:02:37.290]And how to export?
- [00:02:40.020]And it says copy text, next step.
- [00:02:42.630]Copy-
- [00:02:43.609]And- Paste.
- [00:02:44.790]Now, I'm pasting the text.
- [00:02:46.320]So, you can see it's separated.
- [00:02:48.030]So, it creates the thing that will allow this to become
- [00:02:52.320]questions in my new...
- [00:02:54.030]And you can see I had only two questions
- [00:02:55.710]because this was just a way for me to play.
- [00:02:58.260]And those two questions are right there.
- [00:03:00.570]And you can see that it's got some automatic settings.
- [00:03:02.760]For example, it's got 15 second time limit.
- [00:03:07.200]I personally usually give longer because I want to make sure
- [00:03:12.120]that all students have time to process.
- [00:03:14.820]And if I've got some students who are slower,
- [00:03:16.500]I don't want to make these activities really about speed
- [00:03:21.120]because we all know who's going to be really fast.
- [00:03:24.030]I wanna make sure there's enough time
- [00:03:25.380]for everybody to participate.
- [00:03:27.480]Yes. And now we,
- [00:03:30.000]we save the set.
- [00:03:32.880]Save the set, all right.
- [00:03:35.130]Now, we can do solo or host.
- [00:03:37.980]Solo means students are going to do it as a homework
- [00:03:40.920]or by themselves.
- [00:03:42.600]And we can set a time limit,
- [00:03:44.580]students have to finish at that time,
- [00:03:46.560]and their results will be recorded in the system.
- [00:03:50.880]And we can host it as a live game in classroom.
- [00:03:54.330]And that's very much like other apps
- [00:03:56.880]that allow you to do the same kind of thing.
- [00:03:59.820]And you have to think about what really do I want to do?
- [00:04:02.760]Do I want to have them do this on their own as homework
- [00:04:06.780]or because we had to cancel class or as practice?
- [00:04:11.370]Or do we want to do the host and have that
- [00:04:14.190]social activity in the classroom with kids and excitement
- [00:04:17.610]and all of that?
- [00:04:18.443]Both have advantages, and I say,
- [00:04:20.700]sometimes you use one, other times you use the other.
- [00:04:23.670]Yeah. And also when we want to host,
- [00:04:25.867]there are different modes of games,
- [00:04:29.190]different game modes up here.
- [00:04:31.077]So, we can choose the ones
- [00:04:32.910]that you want to do with your students.
- [00:04:35.580]Yeah, they're, they sound fantastic.
- [00:04:37.410]So, there's classic, that's just everybody participating,
- [00:04:40.350]but there is tower defense, there's this-
- [00:04:43.620]It's my student favorite one.
- [00:04:45.540]Is power defense? Yes!
- [00:04:47.310]All right, so what does tower defense look like?
- [00:04:49.950]Let's see it.
- [00:04:51.360]And so now,
- [00:04:53.580]we can host-
- [00:04:55.120]And student can join.
- [00:04:57.960]And so, can you join?
- [00:05:00.189]Yeah, I can join.
- [00:05:01.530]So, you gotta go to play.blooket.com.
- [00:05:04.890]Now, in like many of these, all you need is a number.
- [00:05:08.520]And what I love about being able to log in with a number,
- [00:05:11.220]it means that students don't need to actually
- [00:05:14.370]remember a password of any kind.
- [00:05:16.740]And so, they can get into the game, we can have two players.
- [00:05:20.430]So, we can start.
- [00:05:22.350]And you can say that, and we have two games, all right.
- [00:05:27.660]And you can get the tutorial,
- [00:05:29.280]but you can also get the question, all right.
- [00:05:32.460]Oh, I wasn't right.
- [00:05:34.961]All right.
- [00:05:36.240]You can answer the questions
- [00:05:37.680]and meanwhile, the person who's monitoring
- [00:05:40.290]can see what's happening in the game
- [00:05:42.450]as you are going through.
- [00:05:45.300]Actually when we started,
- [00:05:46.560]the default time is seven minutes.
- [00:05:48.960]So, no matter how many questions you have,
- [00:05:52.470]students will do it for the seven minutes.
- [00:05:54.780]It's like, sometimes we want students to get really familiar
- [00:05:59.070]with some, you know, vocabulary or some,
- [00:06:03.420]you know, question and answers.
- [00:06:05.190]You can do it that way.
- [00:06:06.600]So they get more and more familiar with it
- [00:06:08.910]And as they answer questions,
- [00:06:10.260]they go through this idea of a tower defense.
- [00:06:13.170]So, there's a board and you can move through
- [00:06:15.630]as you answer more and more questions correctly.
- [00:06:19.050]So, it adds a game element to what we're doing.
- [00:06:24.150]And I'll go back to the website.
- [00:06:26.340]This is what the teacher will see, will see though.
- [00:06:30.300]And you can see, here you can get the final,
- [00:06:35.880]the final score, nobody had any damage,
- [00:06:39.540]and then you can,
- [00:06:41.400]and then the participants get to play a wheel.
- [00:06:44.010]Again, it's all created to create that level
- [00:06:48.060]of engagement and fun that can be used.
- [00:06:51.600]All right, what else can you show me?
- [00:06:54.450]And also when we start the game,
- [00:06:56.160]we can actually change the time.
- [00:06:58.440]The default is seven minutes.
- [00:06:59.730]You can change to like, I do not have that many questions.
- [00:07:03.180]I want my students to do three minutes only.
- [00:07:05.610]That's doable as well.
- [00:07:07.680]The cool part is like some students in one of my classroom,
- [00:07:12.900]she is very sensitive to loud noise.
- [00:07:17.100]So that I will send her in the hallway,
- [00:07:19.680]and she can do it herself.
- [00:07:20.970]And I can sometimes assign her to a different mode,
- [00:07:24.450]game mode.
- [00:07:25.350]So, while everybody else is doing
- [00:07:28.020]tower defense in my classroom,
- [00:07:29.830]she's doing factory or cafe in the hallway.
- [00:07:35.520]This way we can differentiate on the spot,
- [00:07:38.670]according to student needs.
- [00:07:40.800]And, one of the things that I love
- [00:07:42.600]about many of these online apps
- [00:07:46.080]is the fact that you can discover,
- [00:07:48.270]so, anybody that creates a game,
- [00:07:51.090]and shares it to the public, you don't have to.
- [00:07:54.330]But, I always say,
- [00:07:55.770]hey, if you can share it, so, somebody else can benefit
- [00:07:58.680]from the hard work that you've done, that's helpful.
- [00:08:02.490]Because as teachers,
- [00:08:03.450]we're always looking for really high quality materials.
- [00:08:07.140]So, if you're taking somebody else's,
- [00:08:08.700]obviously, look at it and see
- [00:08:10.680]is that something I want to use
- [00:08:12.420]or how do I copy it and then edit it
- [00:08:16.230]to make sure that it's actually doing what I wanted to do,
- [00:08:19.650]and that it's high quality,
- [00:08:20.850]but, you can see I just looked for Spanish and look at that.
- [00:08:25.350]We've got some Spanish quizzes,
- [00:08:28.980]they've got very regional name.
- [00:08:30.810]It's a very variation on Spanish, Spanish, Spanish
- [00:08:34.470]or Spanish, Spanish.
- [00:08:35.610]But, you can see how many people have used it.
- [00:08:37.290]You know, they've got over a hundred thousand plays.
- [00:08:41.430]So, you can see how you might go about
- [00:08:44.910]using something like this or taking the 82 questions
- [00:08:48.540]and shortening that to 10 to 15 questions,
- [00:08:51.660]which is what would be reasonable to use
- [00:08:53.700]in any one time in a class. Great practice.
- [00:08:57.360]Yeah.
- [00:08:58.193]And I also like the way
- [00:08:59.430]that I do not have to create a game each time.
- [00:09:02.700]Once I imported my word list from Quizlet,
- [00:09:07.050]there are eight or sometimes even there are new trials
- [00:09:11.310]for us to do, so like so many,
- [00:09:14.280]you know, game modes for us to choose from.
- [00:09:16.230]So, for the whole unit, I, the only thing I need to do
- [00:09:19.830]is to create one list and then I can play at different times
- [00:09:24.300]and with different game mode,
- [00:09:26.460]and my students won't get bored.
- [00:09:29.970]And, there is a homework mode.
- [00:09:32.550]And because I'm a teacher I can look
- [00:09:35.490]how do I assign homework to my students to do on their own?
- [00:09:39.450]And you have to be reasonable
- [00:09:40.620]about the amount of work you want to do,
- [00:09:42.690]but there is very easy to follow a page
- [00:09:47.220]that allows you to do that, exactly.
- [00:09:50.280]And making sure that it is accessible to all kids.
- [00:09:54.960]Again, talking about differentiated potentially,
- [00:09:58.530]and answering all of the questions
- [00:10:00.450]that you might have as a teacher which I appreciate
- [00:10:02.880]because sometimes we need the answers,
- [00:10:04.980]sometimes when administration in our building
- [00:10:08.160]is wondering about the apps we're using,
- [00:10:10.140]we need to have all the information,
- [00:10:11.460]so, we can say, here's what it's going to cost
- [00:10:14.130]or hopefully it's going to be free.
- [00:10:16.050]Here is what it asks for students,
- [00:10:18.510]and here's the information
- [00:10:19.800]they're collecting or not collecting.
- [00:10:21.540]Making sure that it is safe for our students,
- [00:10:23.760]and we are not creating more problems than we are solving.
- [00:10:28.080]All right. So, in summary,
- [00:10:29.490]what are your favorite three things about Blooket?
- [00:10:33.974]My favorite thing,
- [00:10:35.370]the first one is like it saves a lot of time
- [00:10:37.710]for me to create different games.
- [00:10:39.720]So, I can create one, and then,
- [00:10:41.850]I can play it at different times using different game modes
- [00:10:45.480]with my students.
- [00:10:46.680]Also it allows me to differentiate
- [00:10:49.110]when my students have different needs,
- [00:10:51.600]I can assign different modes in the,
- [00:10:54.960]all of them are doing the same thing,
- [00:10:56.670]I mean practice their vocabulary,
- [00:10:58.260]but, in their way they like, in the way they like.
- [00:11:02.639]And the third thing I like Blooket is,
- [00:11:05.940]it allows me to access all their
- [00:11:09.930]ready to use set
- [00:11:13.290]on the website
- [00:11:14.123]because I teach Chinese and there are
- [00:11:17.100]hundreds of other teachers teach Chinese, as well.
- [00:11:19.470]They have already created a lot of things
- [00:11:21.600]and that I can borrow from.
- [00:11:23.700]All right, so, thank you and we'll see you next time
- [00:11:27.480]on Teaching World Language with Technology from Tech Edge.
