- [00:00:07.200]Good evening, everyone.
- [00:00:08.280]I'm Grace, a senior majoring in mathematics with minors
- [00:00:11.400]in physics, national security studies and political science.
- [00:00:14.720]And while I was writing this speech,
- [00:00:16.160]I kept questioning how I could make it impactful,
- [00:00:18.960]whether it would do university justice and how I could successfully exemplify
- [00:00:22.320]what it means to be part of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:00:25.760]Well, I wasn't really getting anywhere,
- [00:00:27.080]so I decided to ask Chat GPT for some assistance
- [00:00:30.840]and this is what I had to say.
- [00:00:33.000]As members of the College of Arts and Sciences at UNL, we have chosen
- [00:00:36.240]to pursue a path of intellectual curiosity and academic exploration.
- [00:00:40.480]We have chosen to embrace an education where we are encouraged to think
- [00:00:43.360]critically, communicate effectively, and engage with diverse perspectives.
- [00:00:47.680]Being a student in the College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:00:50.040]means we have the opportunity to study a wide range of disciplines
- [00:00:53.080]from the humanities to the natural sciences.
- [00:00:55.680]We have the chance to delve into the complexities of human thought,
- [00:00:58.400]culture and history, and to discover new insights about the world around us.
- [00:01:02.920]And while I couldn't have said it better myself, I think
- [00:01:05.720]you forgot the human aspect of college.
- [00:01:08.360]Being a student in the College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:01:10.680]is not just about the classes we take or the knowledge we gain.
- [00:01:13.960]It's about the connections we make with our peers in the community
- [00:01:16.680]and immersing ourselves in the life of the university.
- [00:01:19.600]For instance, when I joined CAS, I wasn't even sure what someone could do
- [00:01:22.920]with a math degree.
- [00:01:24.240]Much less whether I liked math enough to pursue it rigorously.
- [00:01:27.560]But I met a graduate student, Abby Long, who showed me the vast
- [00:01:30.760]career options for math majors and cultivated my passion for calculus.
- [00:01:34.680]It is professors like Tyler White
- [00:01:36.240]who not only helped me find my passion for national security,
- [00:01:38.880]but also continuously supported me through various internships
- [00:01:42.240]that I see Scholars Program and unending references.
- [00:01:45.920]I met Professor Yvonne Lai,
- [00:01:47.640]who not only taught me everything I know about geometry,
- [00:01:50.240]but also the importance of women in STEM education and always pursuing your dreams.
- [00:01:55.640]I could list a dozen of peers and faculty who have impacted my journey here at UNL,
- [00:01:59.680]but I'm afraid we really don't have the time through their mentorship.
- [00:02:03.240]I will now be pairing my passion for math and national security to pursue a Ph.D.
- [00:02:07.360]in mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder
- [00:02:10.440]Research, researching hypersonics with the hopes of having a career
- [00:02:14.080]within the intelligence community in the future.
- [00:02:17.000]I'm sure we all have mentors and organizations
- [00:02:19.040]that have made us into who we are today, and that is thanks to the ongoing support
- [00:02:23.000]and diversity of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:02:25.520]From professors to peers, CAS has given us the opportunity
- [00:02:28.800]to engage in lively discussions and debates, to collaborate on projects,
- [00:02:32.800]to participate in a wide range of activities,
- [00:02:34.960]and to build meaningful relationships with faculty and peers.
- [00:02:38.800]As we look back on our academic journey.
- [00:02:40.600]We encountered many challenges and setbacks
- [00:02:42.640]from coursework all the way to navigating a global pandemic.
- [00:02:46.400]But as members of this community,
- [00:02:48.000]we learned to rely on each other for support and encouragement
- [00:02:51.360]to think critically and to develop our own unique voices and perspectives.
- [00:02:55.120]And most importantly, we grew together as people explored our passions
- [00:02:58.840]and interests and are striving to make a difference in this world.
- [00:03:02.280]Being a student in the College of Arts and Sciences means we are now part
- [00:03:05.280]of a long and proud tradition of scholarship, leadership and service.
- [00:03:08.800]And that doesn't have to stop when we graduate.
- [00:03:11.040]We can continue to impact the world around us
- [00:03:13.120]and find new, innovative solutions to make our mark.
- [00:03:16.400]As we navigate life after college.
- [00:03:18.360]We will encounter many new challenges and obstacles, but we're now
- [00:03:21.360]equipped with the skills and knowledge to overcome these challenges.
- [00:03:24.920]We learn to think critically, analyze information and communicate effectively.
- [00:03:29.400]These skills will serve us well, not just in our academic pursuits,
- [00:03:32.520]but also in our personal and professional lives.
- [00:03:35.120]I look forward to seeing all that you will accomplish in the years ahead,
- [00:03:37.760]and I thank you for everything CAS has brought me.
