- [00:00:06.630]Hello and welcome to your special appointment
- [00:00:09.060]with the Office of Academic Success
- [00:00:10.800]and Intercultural Services, better known as OASIS.
- [00:00:14.670]My name is Letty Garcia
- [00:00:16.020]and I am the Assistant Director at OASIS,
- [00:00:18.420]the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center.
- [00:00:20.730]This presentation will cover benefits students can gain
- [00:00:24.510]by participating in the OASIS Student Success Program.
- [00:00:29.790]Before we get started,
- [00:00:30.900]we would like to recognize the land in which we reside.
- [00:00:34.200]The University of Nebraska is a public,
- [00:00:36.870]land-grant institution with campuses and programs
- [00:00:40.170]across the State that reside on the past, present
- [00:00:44.040]and future homelands of the Pawnee, Ponca, Oto-Missouria,
- [00:00:48.480]Omaha, Dakota, Lakota, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Kaw Peoples,
- [00:00:53.790]as well as the relocated Ho Chunk Winnebago, Iowa,
- [00:00:57.630]and Sac and Fox Peoples.
- [00:01:00.030]This knowledge allows us to better understand
- [00:01:02.280]that our opportunity to impact the State of Nebraska
- [00:01:04.980]and beyond and occupy these lands is a result
- [00:01:08.400]of a history of Native and Indigenous people's experience
- [00:01:11.730]of displacement, violence, settlement, and survival
- [00:01:15.420]which continues to inform our present and future.
- [00:01:21.480]The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center,
- [00:01:23.220]often referred to as the JGMC
- [00:01:25.800]is located on city campus, east of the City Union.
- [00:01:30.090]The JGMC is a home to the Office of Academic Success
- [00:01:33.870]and Intercultural Services, OASIS, and OASIS is a unit
- [00:01:38.070]within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
- [00:01:41.580]OASIS is housed on the first floor
- [00:01:43.920]at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center.
- [00:01:47.430]The JGMC offers a variety of different resources
- [00:01:51.240]such as, a computer lab on the second floor
- [00:01:54.810]and the Kawasaki reading room located on the third floor.
- [00:01:58.950]If you're looking for a great place to study
- [00:02:01.680]and amazing views on campus, visiting the JGMC is a must.
- [00:02:08.340]OASIS serves all University of Nebraska-Lincoln students.
- [00:02:12.390]Our services seek to serve students
- [00:02:14.160]as they make their adjustment to the university.
- [00:02:17.640]The main goal and objective of OASIS
- [00:02:19.830]is to ensure that students have a smooth transition
- [00:02:22.380]from high school to college.
- [00:02:24.660]Our staff are aware of the difficulties and challenges
- [00:02:27.750]that students face during their first year,
- [00:02:30.750]especially those who are perhaps first generation,
- [00:02:34.530]the first in their families to go to college,
- [00:02:37.290]those that are of low income backgrounds
- [00:02:39.900]or from diverse backgrounds and identities,
- [00:02:42.660]and we want to make sure that these students get the support
- [00:02:46.740]and resources that they need to succeed.
- [00:02:50.670]And so we want to help students succeed by equipping them
- [00:02:54.060]with the necessary skills and resources
- [00:02:57.150]to graduate, whether you are the the first
- [00:02:59.520]in your family to go to college,
- [00:03:01.260]or you're interested in gaining leadership skills,
- [00:03:03.900]OASIS has something for you.
- [00:03:08.430]Our mission at OASIS is built on three pillars,
- [00:03:11.490]academic excellence, diversity awareness
- [00:03:14.040]and social engagement.
- [00:03:15.840]The main goal and objective of OASIS
- [00:03:18.720]is to ensure that students have a smooth transition
- [00:03:21.480]from high school to college.
- [00:03:23.400]We want to help students succeed by equipping them
- [00:03:26.220]with the resources, skills, and tools
- [00:03:30.330]that they may need to graduate successfully.
- [00:03:36.120]You might be asking yourself,
- [00:03:37.470]why are you in this session here today?
- [00:03:39.300]Why are you in OASIS?
- [00:03:41.010]How did you get selected to be part of OASIS?
- [00:03:44.430]Well, if you are a recipient
- [00:03:46.290]of the Nebraska Achievement Scholarship
- [00:03:49.410]or partial scholarship,
- [00:03:50.910]you are part of the OASIS Student Success Program.
- [00:03:54.000]These students are automatically enrolled in the program.
- [00:03:58.050]These recipients must complete the entire 13 weeks
- [00:04:01.950]of the Student Success Seminar as part of their scholarship.
- [00:04:06.570]You are also in this session, potentially,
- [00:04:09.210]because you indicated in your admissions application
- [00:04:12.090]that you are a first generation, low-income,
- [00:04:14.700]or from a diverse background,
- [00:04:16.470]and so these students are automatically invited as well
- [00:04:19.920]to participate in the OASIS program.
- [00:04:23.280]If you are a student who is not a recipient
- [00:04:25.470]of the Nebraska Achievement Scholarship,
- [00:04:29.640]and you would like to participate in the OASIS program,
- [00:04:32.580]please notify our staff before the fall semester begins
- [00:04:35.880]so that we can get you added to the program,
- [00:04:38.400]and as long as there are seats available
- [00:04:40.680]within the seminar sections, we are here to support you.
- [00:04:45.060]And as I mentioned, as long as there are seats available,
- [00:04:47.700]our program is open to any and all students.
- [00:04:52.560]A little bit more on the OASIS Student Success Seminar
- [00:04:56.160]and Peer Mentor Program,
- [00:04:58.110]the program offers a student success seminar,
- [00:05:00.510]as I've been mentioning,
- [00:05:01.770]which is a required course for all incoming
- [00:05:04.710]Nebraska Achievements Partial Scholarship recipients.
- [00:05:08.130]OASIS Student Success Program consists
- [00:05:12.000]of a 13-week, zero-credit, pass/no pass seminar

- [00:05:21.900]Students are also paired with a peer mentor
- [00:05:24.600]who is an upper class student
- [00:05:26.460]that assists with their transition to college.
- [00:05:32.910]The OASIS Student Success Program
- [00:05:34.740]is designed to assist all students
- [00:05:37.140]with their transition from high school to college.
- [00:05:39.960]The course covers topics like time management,
- [00:05:42.450]campus resources, financial literacy, study skills,

- [00:06:08.520]for first year students to know.
- [00:06:10.590]And as a student in the program,
- [00:06:12.330]you are required to attend

- [00:06:38.910]Assignments and requirements of the program
- [00:06:41.010]are designed to help students learn and grow
