- [00:00:00.000]Hi, I'm Cindy Schmidt
- [00:00:02.160]and I'm joined today by my colleague Jess King.
- [00:00:05.190]We're librarians at the McGoogan Library at UNMC.
- [00:00:09.330]In 2019, we were informed that we'd have to find a new home
- [00:00:14.010]for our online side guided tutorials.
- [00:00:18.660]Pressbooks came up as one possibility
- [00:00:21.630]for providing the instruction screen.
- [00:00:24.750]With Pressbooks, we could enter the chapters and sections,
- [00:00:28.830]it would automatically generate a table
- [00:00:31.080]of contents so students could skip around easily.
- [00:00:34.950]It automatically generated the links between chapters.
- [00:00:39.210]It allowed us to include screenshots
- [00:00:42.240]and other images,
- [00:00:44.190]to include links to downloadable assignments,
- [00:00:50.220]to embed videos.
- [00:00:52.230]And all of that was great and exciting.
- [00:00:54.870]But even better was the ability to
- [00:00:57.030]include these H5P interactive objects
- [00:01:00.660]so that we could make the video pause
- [00:01:02.790]and ask the student a question.
- [00:01:04.741](laughing)
- [00:01:08.820]And of course there are other types of questions also.
- [00:01:11.550]This multiple choice question provides feedback.
- [00:01:17.670]This is a drag and drop, matching question.
- [00:01:23.820]There are a lot of different kinds of questions.
- [00:01:25.860]And we could also include these little accordion hints
- [00:01:31.620]which just really helped the students who didn't
- [00:01:34.500]want to read the whole hint skip by it.
- [00:01:36.810]So this gave us more student engagement and was exciting.
- [00:01:44.460]And as Cindy said, my name is Jess King.
- [00:01:46.350]I think what excites me
- [00:01:47.940]about OER is the creative freedom that it allows us to have.
- [00:01:51.600]So similar to my colleague Cindy, I've used H5P
- [00:01:54.420]within Pressbooks to build activities
- [00:01:56.220]that are more interactive for our university population.
- [00:01:59.700]In my case,
- [00:02:00.533]I used it to create a series of mini escape rooms.
- [00:02:02.700]So our library underwent a major renovation a few years ago
- [00:02:05.880]and we reopened during the early stages of the pandemic.
- [00:02:08.550]So many people couldn't physically be
- [00:02:10.170]on campus to see the new space.
- [00:02:11.970]I wanted a fun way to introduce our community
- [00:02:13.920]both to the new space
- [00:02:15.000]and to the Covid policies that were in place.
- [00:02:18.009]So this here is our medium size study room escape.
- [00:02:21.690]I use the H5P question set
- [00:02:23.400]in image hotspots to insert questions underneath the picture
- [00:02:27.120]that of corresponding hints for the questions
- [00:02:29.040]which can be viewed using the hotspots located
- [00:02:31.260]on the picture.
- [00:02:33.330]So we can see how this works with the first question.
- [00:02:37.080]If we enter in the wrong answer,
- [00:02:38.790]like it's required that you wear a bandana
- [00:02:42.000]and check that it gives us the option to retry.
- [00:02:47.490]Now obviously if we read that it is required
- [00:02:49.140]that you wear a mask while in the library
- [00:02:51.240]unless you're alone in a study room with the door closed,
- [00:02:54.060]check that and then we get our little star.
- [00:02:59.640]So if we wanted to find the hint for that question,
- [00:03:03.750]that's up here and it tells us question number one, hint.
- [00:03:06.930]And it gives us a little hint that it's been mandated,
- [00:03:10.110]the wearing of these in public spaces.
- [00:03:16.740]Now, we also have true and false questions
- [00:03:20.130]and we have multiple choice questions in this set.
- [00:03:25.050]But there are a lot of different types of questions,
- [00:03:26.730]like Cindy said, there's also drag and drop.
- [00:03:29.430]In this particular escape, I only used multiple choice,
- [00:03:32.040]true/false, and like a fill in the blank.
- [00:03:34.560]And that's basically how the two
- [00:03:36.450]of us have been using OER here at UNMC.
- [00:03:40.650]Once you answer all of the questions correctly,
- [00:03:42.900]if we go kind of go back here to answer these really quick
- [00:04:04.710]and finish, and then we see that we earned five gold stars.
- [00:04:08.670]But that's how we've used it at UNMC
- [00:04:10.800]and it's all we have to say about OER right now.
