[00:00:13.515]at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Public Health,
[00:00:17.696]have announced plans for the annual “tractor safety” training courses scheduled
[00:00:23.416]at 6 sites across Nebraska in late May through early June.
[00:00:28.398]Students will complete the first day of the course either by attending a
[00:00:32.398]hands-on event or online through the eXtension Foundation Campus website.
[00:00:38.683]The hands-on events will take place May 22 in North Platte and May 30th in Grand Island.
[00:00:47.003]After successfully completing a hands-on event or the online course, and testing,
[00:00:53.943]the required driving test will be offered at five locations across Nebraska.
[00:00:59.503]Federal law prohibits children under 16 years of age from using certain equipment
[00:01:05.526]on a farm unless their parents or legal guardians own the farm.
[00:01:10.562]However, certification received through the course grants
[00:01:14.562]an exemption to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds
[00:01:19.712]to drive a tractor and to do field work with certain equipment.
[00:01:25.151]Teens 14 or 15 years of age who work on farms,
[00:01:29.350]or others who are interested in learning about safe farming practices,
[00:01:34.677]are encouraged to register for the certification course.
[00:01:38.804]Students under the age of 14 are not eligible for certification
[00:01:43.797]but the hands-on events are open to everyone in the community.
[00:01:48.853]The online course will cover the required elements of the
[00:01:52.853]National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program,
[00:01:57.065]including quizzes which students must pass to attend the driving portion of training.
[00:02:03.775]Once a student is registered, they will be sent instructions,
[00:02:07.891]materials, course paperwork and a link to the online course.
[00:02:13.472]The onsite driving training and exam will include
[00:02:17.653]a driving test and equipment operation and ATV safety lessons.
[00:02:23.356]Students must demonstrate competence in hitching and unhitching equipment and
[00:02:28.943]driving a tractor and trailer through a standardized course.
[00:02:33.175]Instructors will also offer education about safe behaviors and laws for ATVs,
[00:02:39.115]utility-task vehicles, and other off-road vehicles.
[00:02:44.497]The cost of the course is $35
[00:02:47.756]which includes educational materials, the online learning link and supplies.
[00:02:53.472]Payment can be made at the time of the driving exam.
