- [00:00:04.170]Good morning. Welcome to New Student Enrollment.
- [00:00:06.750]This is the College of Business session.
- [00:00:09.420]My name is Jennifer Mostek.
- [00:00:10.770]I am the Director of Business Advising
- [00:00:12.300]and Student Engagement.
- [00:00:13.320]My pronouns are she and hers.
- [00:00:15.930]And I am Rachel Larson.
- [00:00:17.640]I'm the Assistant Dean of Academic and Career Development
- [00:00:20.190]in the College of Business,
- [00:00:21.300]and my pronouns are also she, hers.
- [00:00:24.900]So we are going to get started.
- [00:00:26.940]I'll just tell you a little bit
- [00:00:28.110]about the screen you're looking at.
- [00:00:29.400]You are more than welcome to follow us on social media.
- [00:00:31.950]We have a very lightly Facebook
- [00:00:35.220]and Twitter and Instagram account.
- [00:00:37.590]We also have a family newsletter
- [00:00:38.880]that we would like you to join
- [00:00:40.880]so you can get more information along the way.
- [00:00:43.200]And we'll have that web link in the QR code both here
- [00:00:49.500]and then at the end of the presentation too.
- [00:00:58.971]So today we are going to talk to you
- [00:01:00.390]about who is here to help you as you're a student here
- [00:01:03.000]in the College of Business and at UNL.
- [00:01:04.890]We'll talk about degree requirements.
- [00:01:06.900]In my advising world, this is where we spend a lot of time
- [00:01:10.781]trying to help you with that.
- [00:01:12.540]And then more about the College of Business resources.
- [00:01:15.630]Throughout all of these videos,
- [00:01:17.190]you'll learn a lot about resources around the university,
- [00:01:19.740]but we wanna give you that College of Business field too.
- [00:01:23.640]We're also gonna sprinkle in a couple of tips along the way.
- [00:01:27.570]We know that college is very different than high school,
- [00:01:30.990]and we're gonna remind you about these things,
- [00:01:33.540]but wanna get started with,
- [00:01:35.820]it's really important to meet with an advisor
- [00:01:37.470]every semester to stay on track.
- [00:01:39.510]We know most of you have a goal of graduating in four years,
- [00:01:43.080]and we wanna help you stay with that goal.
- [00:01:45.930]So the reason that you're meeting with an advisor regularly
- [00:01:49.170]is because high school counselors
- [00:01:51.690]and academic advisors are similar, but pretty different.
- [00:01:55.560]Now that you're in college, this is all in your hands.
- [00:01:58.290]You get to be the decision maker,
- [00:02:00.690]and that means you also try to be the doer, too.
- [00:02:03.180]So while we're here to help you and support you
- [00:02:05.340]and suggest different classes, help problem solve with you,
- [00:02:07.950]you're gonna be taking a lot of the actions.
- [00:02:10.020]You'll be enrolling yourself in classes
- [00:02:13.140]and deciding which clubs to join in
- [00:02:16.380]and when to apply for that internship, when to study abroad.
- [00:02:19.830]But we're gonna help you plan that out
- [00:02:22.230]and talk about pros and cons.
- [00:02:25.650]Any of those questions you have,
- [00:02:26.910]you're always welcome to start with an advisor.
- [00:02:30.060]We're really good at visiting about different major options
- [00:02:32.760]and different plans that you can make along the way.
- [00:02:37.380]We'll also talk about student organizations,
- [00:02:39.120]which we'll talk about a little bit later
- [00:02:40.440]in this presentation.
- [00:02:43.943]We have a great team of academic advisors
- [00:02:45.480]ready to help you along the way.
- [00:02:48.030]We will have availability throughout the week,
- [00:02:52.830]Monday through Friday.
- [00:02:54.120]Appointments, you can stop in as a drop in.
- [00:02:56.970]We also have something that's a little bit new
- [00:02:59.400]to the university called Academic Navigators.
- [00:03:01.860]So we have Cal and Maria on our team to support you.
- [00:03:06.090]If you need extra meetings,
- [00:03:07.980]if you wanna check in with someone weekly or biweekly
- [00:03:10.800]and just have someone to visit with
- [00:03:12.617]as you are figuring out how do I study better
- [00:03:16.170]and what's my time management look like,
- [00:03:17.700]they're more than happy to meet with you regularly.
- [00:03:21.840]All right, moving into the meat of things.
- [00:03:24.960]You are here to get a bachelor's degree, right?
- [00:03:27.570]And so you are earning
- [00:03:28.920]a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration,
- [00:03:31.500]and I like to share that
- [00:03:32.490]because often students hear the word BA or BS,
- [00:03:36.720]but you're earning a BSBA.
- [00:03:38.340]And so that is what is going to be
- [00:03:39.960]on your diploma and transcript.
- [00:03:43.350]And this bachelor's degree is 120 credit hours.
- [00:03:46.860]And so credit hours is our unit of measurement.
- [00:03:49.650]Your high school probably had hours that you needed,
- [00:03:53.460]your English or social studies
- [00:03:54.990]might have been five hours for a semester.
- [00:03:57.540]Most of our classes are three credit hours for one semester.
- [00:04:00.960]And that will just tell you that you're gonna go
- [00:04:02.460]to class three times a week for 50 minutes
- [00:04:04.800]or two times a week for 75 minutes.
- [00:04:07.680]And most of your classes will be three hours,
- [00:04:09.960]but there's a few one hour classes,
- [00:04:11.370]a few four hours, some five.
- [00:04:13.770]But it just tells you how much time and work
- [00:04:16.290]and effort's gonna go into that class.
- [00:04:19.920]Also important in the business degree is the GPA.
- [00:04:23.670]So we do require a minimum 2.5 GPA
- [00:04:27.020]to enroll in certain classes along the way
- [00:04:29.580]and also to apply for graduation.
- [00:04:32.370]And I think it's important to share this right now
- [00:04:34.800]before you've even started
- [00:04:36.450]because a 2.5 is an average of a B minus and a C plus.
- [00:04:41.340]And there's that old saying about C's get degrees,
- [00:04:44.070]and that's true like around the university,
- [00:04:45.840]but not necessarily in the college business.
- [00:04:47.970]You can get some C's, but in order to keep that 2.5 GPA,
- [00:04:52.290]you're gonna need to get a lot of A's and B's too.
- [00:04:54.900]So it's really important to use this first semester
- [00:04:58.050]to figure out how to do college.
- [00:05:00.390]You've been doing high school,
- [00:05:01.800]you've been doing that really well,
- [00:05:04.080]and so how do you take those skills
- [00:05:05.970]and everything that you can learn in high school
- [00:05:08.130]and then tweak it and kind of upgrade it a little bit
- [00:05:10.320]so that you can do college.
- [00:05:16.050]Let's see.
- [00:05:18.030]These boxes that you see on the screen right now,
- [00:05:19.980]this is how we break up that 120 hours into the degree,
- [00:05:22.860]because 120 sounds really big, right?
- [00:05:25.050]All of these classes that you need,
- [00:05:26.970]but we've put it in kind of buckets to help you understand
- [00:05:30.990]why you're at along the way in your degree.
- [00:05:33.150]That first yellow bucket
- [00:05:34.410]is our general education requirements.
- [00:05:36.570]We call it ACE, stands for Achievement-Centered Education.
- [00:05:41.040]NBR is our non-business requirements.
- [00:05:42.840]So you'll spend your first semester here
- [00:05:44.610]taking things like English and math,
- [00:05:47.460]maybe a humanities or a history class,
- [00:05:51.683]and these things are gonna sound pretty familiar, right?
- [00:05:54.150]You've been doing these for years.
- [00:05:55.800]So we're really intentional about using this first semester
- [00:05:58.740]with things that you've already been doing
- [00:06:00.030]and doing well to make that easier of a transition.
- [00:06:03.300]Figure out how do I tweak things to do college
- [00:06:06.424]and get those A's and B's to get myself set up
- [00:06:09.480]for a strong GPA and a successful four years.
- [00:06:13.230]Well, also group classes into the buckets for foundation.
- [00:06:18.300]Intermediate, advanced is a word
- [00:06:20.070]that we use to summarize major.
- [00:06:22.770]And one of the greatest things
- [00:06:24.030]about the way our business program is structured,
- [00:06:27.690]out of all of our 11 majors,
- [00:06:29.370]all of the students will have these ACE classes,
- [00:06:31.530]these foundation, and these intermediate classes.
- [00:06:34.080]So what this means is you can have about three
- [00:06:38.490]to four semesters to decide,
- [00:06:40.117]"Yes, I love my major, I wanna keep it."
- [00:06:42.000]Or, "You know what?
- [00:06:43.050]I found this other major that works really well for me
- [00:06:45.480]and I wanna give that a try."
- [00:06:47.130]And we can still help you plan to graduate in four years.
- [00:06:52.170]And that's not necessarily true in other places,
- [00:06:54.060]but we love that in the College of Business
- [00:06:55.740]that we can still help you stay on track
- [00:06:57.060]with that four years as you explore your different majors.
- [00:07:01.260]And kinda diving a little deeper into those foundation
- [00:07:03.567]and intermediate classes,
- [00:07:05.130]is no matter what major you have in the College of Business,
- [00:07:07.290]you're gonna have a really strong business foundation.
- [00:07:09.690]You see that you're gonna have accounting and economics
- [00:07:12.180]and statistics, business laws, supply chain, finance,
- [00:07:15.780]business analytics, marketing and management.
- [00:07:18.690]This will give you that really strong business foundation,
- [00:07:21.150]it'll give you an intro to just about every major,
- [00:07:23.730]and it'll help you decide, yes, I wanna do this major,
- [00:07:26.250]or at least help you kind of cross off some of the majors
- [00:07:29.130]that you might not want to move forward with.
- [00:07:32.400]We also have electives in every major,
- [00:07:36.300]and electives is where you can really customize this degree
- [00:07:39.570]and make it your own.
- [00:07:41.400]You'll have room for a minor, for another major.
- [00:07:45.480]It gives you a chance to kind of tailor your degree
- [00:07:48.360]to what you're looking for
- [00:07:49.290]and help you plan for those future career goals.
- [00:07:54.000]And we've talked a lot about a lot of classes, right,
- [00:07:55.680]a lot of credit hours.
- [00:07:57.630]Don't worry, you don't have to keep it all in your head
- [00:07:59.550]or you're not obligated to talk to an advisor
- [00:08:01.980]to find out every next step
- [00:08:03.210]because we have tools for you to use for that.
- [00:08:05.400]We have a degree audit,
- [00:08:06.570]which keeps track of all of your graduation requirements,
- [00:08:09.990]the undergraduate catalog, which will tell you
- [00:08:11.670]about all of the majors at the university,
- [00:08:13.470]all of the courses, and a degree planner
- [00:08:15.930]where we can put those classes in order for you.
- [00:08:18.540]What am I gonna do first semester, second semester, third?
- [00:08:21.660]And you'll talk more about this with your academic advisor
- [00:08:24.090]when you enroll in classes.
- [00:08:31.117]And as we move into the next tip,
- [00:08:34.890]we encourage you to enroll in classes
- [00:08:36.870]during priority registration to get the best class options.
- [00:08:40.050]And so priority registration, priority enrollment,
- [00:08:42.450]this is gonna be a new vocabulary word
- [00:08:44.280]that's really important to remember,
- [00:08:46.170]because enrollment will open up for seniors,
- [00:08:49.110]then juniors and sophomores and freshmen.
- [00:08:51.810]And some of our classes will fill up
- [00:08:54.060]or some of the times that are best for you may fill up.
- [00:08:56.820]So it's really important to enroll as soon as you can
- [00:08:59.640]because then you can get the classes you need
- [00:09:01.350]at the times you want.
- [00:09:02.760]I always use the example, if you're not a morning person,
- [00:09:04.830]you don't wanna counting at 8:00 AM.
- [00:09:06.360]You want that afternoon class
- [00:09:07.710]so that your brain is ready and alert
- [00:09:10.230]and you can go to class every day
- [00:09:12.205]to help you set you up for success
- [00:09:14.850]and get those good grades.
- [00:09:26.880]Here's an example of a common first semester schedule.
- [00:09:30.120]If you have any dual high school credit
- [00:09:32.580]with a community college or a four year school
- [00:09:34.680]or any advanced placement, AP credit,
- [00:09:37.020]the advisor's gonna know about that and it's gonna tweak it
- [00:09:38.940]based off of the classes that you have,
- [00:09:41.460]the classes you need, and your major.
- [00:09:43.710]But this is just showing
- [00:09:44.850]that you'll have a few business classes,
- [00:09:46.800]but primarily it's gonna be
- [00:09:47.940]a lot of those general education classes.
- [00:09:50.220]And again, just like I mentioned before,
- [00:09:52.230]this is intentional and on purpose to give you a chance
- [00:09:55.710]to figure out how to kind of tweak those study skills
- [00:09:59.130]and kind of up that, that studying and test taking
- [00:10:02.820]and discussion and paper writing for the college level.
- [00:10:06.210]So you'll likely have an English class, math, humanities,
- [00:10:10.500]human diversity, maybe an art or theater class,
- [00:10:13.950]things that you've been doing,
- [00:10:15.240]some things might be kind of new,
- [00:10:16.680]and that'll give you a chance
- [00:10:17.730]to start figuring out college a little bit more too.
- [00:10:20.670]You'll have 14 to 16 credit hours in that first semester.
- [00:10:23.730]And we do that because 15 credit hours each semester
- [00:10:28.170]over four years, eight semesters, will add up to 120.
- [00:10:32.010]So the goal is to help you graduate in four years.
- [00:10:34.500]And if you wanna go a little slower, a little faster,
- [00:10:36.600]then we'll help tweak that for you too.
- [00:10:39.510]As you are preparing
- [00:10:41.040]for your new student enrollment advising appointment,
- [00:10:44.550]you'll take the math placement exam,
- [00:10:46.500]and that will give us a chance
- [00:10:48.810]to see where you're at in math.
- [00:10:50.880]The goal for business is to take an applied calculus,
- [00:10:54.390]kind of a business calc class.
- [00:10:56.940]So you'll want to try to test into Math 104
- [00:10:59.430]if you've ever had calculus or pre-calculus,
- [00:11:01.860]and if you haven't, you'll likely try for Math 101.
- [00:11:05.100]We'll talk more about that in the advising appointment too.
- [00:11:10.620]And I mentioned, there are the two business classes
- [00:11:13.440]on that list, BSAD 78, BSAD 111.
- [00:11:17.130]That first class, BSAD 78, is called Start Smart.
- [00:11:20.430]This is gonna be a pretty low-key class for you.
- [00:11:22.710]It's zero credit hours.
- [00:11:24.540]It's pass, no pass, it won't affect your GPA.
- [00:11:27.300]The zero credit hours means it's free.
- [00:11:29.640]And this is an online orientation
- [00:11:31.320]of the College of Business.
- [00:11:32.670]You'll hear the word orientation a lot of times.
- [00:11:34.770]You have new student enrollment,
- [00:11:36.180]which is like an orientation.
- [00:11:37.740]You'll have some activities as school is starting.
- [00:11:40.290]That might kind of feel like orientation too.
- [00:11:42.840]This is an actual class that you're enrolled in
- [00:11:44.820]and that you'll have...
- [00:11:46.740]You'll probably spend about three
- [00:11:47.640]or four hours working through the content,
- [00:11:49.620]but again, it doesn't take very long.
- [00:11:51.420]But the idea is to help you about Canvas,
- [00:11:54.090]which is our course management system.
- [00:11:56.370]If you've ever had a class that uses Blackboard
- [00:11:58.560]or a Google Classroom, it's kind of similar.
- [00:12:01.680]It's gonna keep all of your assignments,
- [00:12:05.220]all of the information
- [00:12:07.620]that the instructor wants you to have, the syllabus.
- [00:12:10.260]And we're gonna talk about what is a syllabus in this class,
- [00:12:13.110]and we wanna help set you up
- [00:12:14.340]so that you're ready for that first day of college
- [00:12:16.560]and know about the different resources
- [00:12:18.360]and different tools you'll need to use.
- [00:12:21.240]This class is gonna open up
- [00:12:22.410]before the semester starts, on August 1st,
- [00:12:25.260]and your advisor will tell you more
- [00:12:26.610]about what to expect for that class.
- [00:12:29.490]The next class in that list was BSAD 111,
- [00:12:32.460]Investing in Strengths.
- [00:12:35.700]So Investing in Strengths, BSAD 111,
- [00:12:38.700]is gonna be the additional first class
- [00:12:41.010]that you're gonna take in the College of Business.
- [00:12:43.170]And that's gonna be done in your very first semester,
- [00:12:45.660]the very first eight weeks most likely
- [00:12:48.120]of your college career.
- [00:12:49.860]And so this is a series of courses
- [00:12:52.560]or the first in a series of courses
- [00:12:54.300]called the Professional Enhancement Program.
- [00:12:56.490]So basically they are career development courses
- [00:12:59.790]to make sure that you are graduating
- [00:13:02.314]knowing what you would like to do
- [00:13:04.590]or have some good ideas of what you would like to do
- [00:13:06.570]and know the path of how to achieve those goals.
- [00:13:10.170]So that very first class,
- [00:13:11.730]you're going to learn a lot more about who you are.
- [00:13:14.940]So if you've taken the Gallup's StrengthsFinder
- [00:13:17.220]or Clifton's StrengthsFinder assessment before
- [00:13:20.280]or if you've heard of it before,
- [00:13:21.660]you're gonna get the opportunity
- [00:13:22.800]to take that here in this class
- [00:13:24.930]and learn a lot more about what your talents are,
- [00:13:27.600]your strengths are, you'll get to know your top five,
- [00:13:30.510]and how you can apply those in college,
- [00:13:33.326]in a professional workforce,
- [00:13:35.520]and honestly even in your personal life as well.
- [00:13:38.430]So it's a really great class to learn a lot more
- [00:13:40.200]about who you are as a person.
- [00:13:42.450]That's gonna then transition
- [00:13:43.680]into a sophomore year Career Development & Planning class,
- [00:13:46.770]a sophomore junior Internship
- [00:13:48.433]& Job Search Strategies course,
- [00:13:50.550]and then a senior year Professional & Life Skills course.
- [00:13:54.660]The great thing about these is that you're gonna get
- [00:13:57.690]some really strong one-on-one coaching
- [00:13:59.820]in each of these courses.
- [00:14:01.470]So 111, you're gonna get a CliftonStrengths' coach,
- [00:14:04.170]that's going to help you learn more about your strengths,
- [00:14:07.950]you're gonna meet with them several times, and again,
- [00:14:09.930]how to apply them in a variety of different environments.
- [00:14:12.900]In your sophomore year,
- [00:14:14.040]you're gonna get a one-on-one resume coach.
- [00:14:16.530]Then you're gonna get an interview coach in BSAD 333.
- [00:14:20.220]And then you're also gonna get
- [00:14:21.390]kind of a transition coach in BSAD 444.
- [00:14:25.350]So the reason these courses exist
- [00:14:27.240]is because our faculty cares so much about you
- [00:14:29.850]and what you're gonna do after graduation
- [00:14:32.070]that they wanted to build this career development
- [00:14:33.960]into the curriculum.
- [00:14:37.020]So the very first class is taught
- [00:14:38.970]by our one of a kind Clifton Strengths Institute,
- [00:14:41.700]and the other three are taught
- [00:14:43.410]by our Business Career Center,
- [00:14:45.030]which is internationally ranked.
- [00:14:47.190]And so you can see here a little bit more
- [00:14:50.130]about what you can do with the Business Career Center
- [00:14:53.190]outside of those professional enhancement courses.
- [00:14:56.190]So they do a lot of one-on-one career coaching,
- [00:14:58.800]anywhere from what should I major in,
- [00:15:01.230]what should my career be in,
- [00:15:03.180]resumes, cover letters, interviewing,
- [00:15:05.370]things that you're gonna get
- [00:15:06.203]in those professional enhancement program courses,
- [00:15:08.970]but these are going to be more in-depth opportunities
- [00:15:12.270]to work one-on-one with our business career coaches,
- [00:15:15.720]things like internships, job search strategies, networking,
- [00:15:20.370]also, my favorite, which is salary
- [00:15:22.410]and job offer negotiation,
- [00:15:24.090]because we always wanna make sure
- [00:15:25.380]that hopefully you have multiple options to choose from
- [00:15:27.900]when you're looking at internships,
- [00:15:29.340]full-time positions or graduate school after graduation.
- [00:15:33.120]The Business Career Center's also gonna be great
- [00:15:35.550]for connecting you to employers that hire our students
- [00:15:38.490]for part-time jobs, internships, and full-time positions,
- [00:15:42.300]whether it's bringing employers into the College of Business
- [00:15:45.360]with our Employer in Residence program,
- [00:15:47.310]which you'll be able to see an example of
- [00:15:49.650]in our picture on the left,
- [00:15:51.570]or it's taking students to
- [00:15:54.330]or bringing in employers to career fairs,
- [00:15:57.120]and then also taking students to employer visits
- [00:16:00.840]in national locations such as Washington, DC,
- [00:16:04.260]Phoenix, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, and Chicago.
- [00:16:08.310]So lots of really great opportunities to connect
- [00:16:11.220]and to figure out what you want to do after graduation,
- [00:16:15.060]which I know seems very far off,
- [00:16:17.760]but is really important to start thinking about soon
- [00:16:20.160]so that that way you can really prepare
- [00:16:22.230]along your college career for those opportunities.
- [00:16:27.210]So our next tip for you
- [00:16:28.950]is to sit near the front of the class to make it easier
- [00:16:32.310]to not only engage in the course and have less distractions,
- [00:16:36.540]but it's also helpful because then your faculty members
- [00:16:39.090]get to know who you are as a person
- [00:16:41.070]and kind of a face to the name.
- [00:16:43.770]I would also go one step further with this helpful tip
- [00:16:46.470]and to really say, go and talk with your professors,
- [00:16:49.500]use their office hours.
- [00:16:51.210]They wanna know you as a person,
- [00:16:52.800]and if you ever need assistance
- [00:16:54.420]or maybe, just maybe you have a hard time with a class
- [00:16:57.930]and you might fail a test or so, me,
- [00:17:01.260]I did failed my very first calculus test ever in college,
- [00:17:05.640]and got a chance to then go and talk with the professor,
- [00:17:08.760]figure out what I was doing on.
- [00:17:10.380]He happened to give me some points back
- [00:17:12.660]because he thought somebody graded me a little too hard,
- [00:17:14.820]which is not gonna happen in every situation,
- [00:17:17.280]but was really great in my situation,
- [00:17:19.110]and also gave me some ideas of questions
- [00:17:22.972]and examples that might be on the next test.
- [00:17:26.700]So ended up with an A in the class.
- [00:17:28.770]So that's something
- [00:17:29.603]that you can also be looking at too with.
- [00:17:33.450]If you're struggling or not,
- [00:17:34.650]going and talking to those professors
- [00:17:36.360]is gonna be very helpful.
- [00:17:40.140]So speaking of perhaps some extra assistance,
- [00:17:43.770]we have a lot of resources in the university,
- [00:17:47.430]whether it's our Math Resource Center, our Writing Center,
- [00:17:50.970]there's other additional,
- [00:17:52.020]kind of the Center for Academic Success and Transition,
- [00:17:55.410]which is gonna give you either options
- [00:17:57.030]for tutoring or study skills.
- [00:17:59.940]But inside the College of Business,
- [00:18:01.440]we actually have our own teaching and learning center.
- [00:18:04.140]So if you are struggling on any business courses,
- [00:18:07.110]this is gonna be a really great opportunity
- [00:18:08.940]to get free one-on-one tutoring in those business courses.
- [00:18:13.110]The good thing about this
- [00:18:14.220]is that you get to define what struggling means.
- [00:18:17.730]So for some of you,
- [00:18:18.990]that's gonna be like me, failing that first test,
- [00:18:21.750]and in other cases, it is going to be,
- [00:18:25.207]"Hey, you know, there's this one concept
- [00:18:27.720]that I'm really struggling in this class,
- [00:18:31.230]and it happens to potentially be a foundational topic.
- [00:18:34.050]I wanna make sure I really get it down."
- [00:18:35.880]They're gonna be able to go over kind of big picture
- [00:18:37.980]and specifics with you.
- [00:18:40.170]So they'll do weekly review sessions for several classes,
- [00:18:43.170]especially ahead of tests.
- [00:18:45.060]And then they do have some study halls as well.
- [00:18:47.520]So again, a really great opportunity to go more in depth
- [00:18:51.000]or to get a little bit of assistance
- [00:18:52.982]with your business courses.
- [00:18:56.910]We also want you to start thinking
- [00:18:58.230]about do you wanna study abroad at some point.
- [00:19:01.560]We have lots of different opportunities within the college,
- [00:19:04.140]and you can see some examples here,
- [00:19:06.120]whether it's our Nebraska at Oxford program,
- [00:19:08.400]which takes students to study from real Oxford professors
- [00:19:13.232]in England for five weeks in the summer.
- [00:19:17.040]We've got lots of opportunities in Europe,
- [00:19:19.560]as well as you can see, Costa Rica, Rwanda, Japan,
- [00:19:22.710]and we're actually, just this January,
- [00:19:24.690]starting an Australia study abroad for three weeks.
- [00:19:27.960]So these are great opportunities
- [00:19:29.610]to study abroad for a very short period of time,
- [00:19:32.520]or you can go for a longer period of time,
- [00:19:35.010]like an entire semester or an entire summer.
- [00:19:37.290]So start thinking
- [00:19:38.580]about is this something that you wanna consider,
- [00:19:41.070]and if there's not anything within the College of Business
- [00:19:44.160]that you're interested in,
- [00:19:45.360]the university has really great options
- [00:19:47.880]in almost every location you could possibly think of,
- [00:19:51.390]but it's good to start talking about it
- [00:19:53.730]and thinking about it and discussing that
- [00:19:56.190]with your academic advisor right now
- [00:19:58.230]so you can figure out where to build that
- [00:19:59.880]into your four year plan.
- [00:20:04.740]So our next tip for you is to join one business RSO
- [00:20:07.980]and one personal interest RSO,
- [00:20:10.230]which will give you a chance
- [00:20:11.370]to meet students and get connected.
- [00:20:13.830]So RSO is gonna be another new vocabulary word for you.
- [00:20:17.670]It stands for Registered Student Organization.
- [00:20:20.040]So it's basically our clubs
- [00:20:21.690]or student organizations here on campus.
- [00:20:24.450]So there's lots of different opportunities
- [00:20:26.400]for student organizations.
- [00:20:28.500]It's really gonna help you
- [00:20:29.850]to make this large university feel a lot smaller.
- [00:20:34.290]The business college is already really great
- [00:20:36.870]at making it feel like a smaller community,
- [00:20:39.750]but these student organizations,
- [00:20:41.430]especially if you get more involved in them,
- [00:20:43.620]are really gonna make it feel like a family
- [00:20:46.440]within a larger organization.
- [00:20:49.440]So the types of student organizations,
- [00:20:51.180]there are 25 different plus
- [00:20:54.120]and they're changing all of the time,
- [00:20:55.860]different student organizations
- [00:20:57.270]within the College of Business,
- [00:20:59.190]things from, based on your academic major,
- [00:21:02.460]like the Supply Chain Club or Beta Alpha Psi,
- [00:21:07.320]which is a finance and accounting student organization,
- [00:21:10.680]to more identity-based ones such as Pride in Business,
- [00:21:15.120]our Women in Business Student Organization,
- [00:21:17.430]Multicultural Business Student Association.
- [00:21:20.310]And then there are others that are more kind of like
- [00:21:22.800]what's called business fraternities,
- [00:21:24.780]which are not what you typically think of for Greek life,
- [00:21:28.230]sororities, and fraternities,
- [00:21:29.700]but more co-ed, academic-oriented
- [00:21:32.130]where you're learning about different things
- [00:21:33.870]and maybe even meeting some employers with that.
- [00:21:37.170]But if you don't find anything
- [00:21:39.120]or wanna join an additional organization,
- [00:21:41.490]there are so many more organizations here at the university.
- [00:21:44.820]There are over 400 here that are really great opportunities
- [00:21:49.140]for you to get connected,
- [00:21:51.090]anything from going in the Marvel Bunch,
- [00:21:54.330]which actually watches Marvel movies
- [00:21:56.970]and discusses different Marvel scenarios,
- [00:21:59.850]and there's sports, there's residence halls,
- [00:22:03.150]there's just anything
- [00:22:04.680]that you could probably think of is here, and if not,
- [00:22:07.710]you have the opportunity to even start your own.
- [00:22:12.630]Okay, so we'll switch gears a little bit
- [00:22:16.170]and look at the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
- [00:22:20.070]And again, this is switching gears,
- [00:22:22.500]but it's something that I like to share on the front end
- [00:22:26.010]because this is another area
- [00:22:27.240]where high school and college is just very different.
- [00:22:29.640]So families out there, I know K through 12,
- [00:22:32.880]you've been getting lots of emails weekly, maybe daily,
- [00:22:36.120]about things that are coming up,
- [00:22:38.640]maybe even emails about missed assignments,
- [00:22:41.220]or where grades are at, or log into C grades,
- [00:22:43.860]that changes in college.
- [00:22:45.600]With this federal law, it says that, students,
- [00:22:48.300]you are the owner of all of your information
- [00:22:50.416]and you could decide who has access to that
- [00:22:52.890]or who gets to know information about it.
- [00:22:55.050]So those of us that work at the university,
- [00:22:56.640]we have an educational right to know,
- [00:22:58.620]but we encourage you students to visit with your families
- [00:23:02.250]about what do you want that balance to be, student?
- [00:23:05.850]When do you want help?
- [00:23:06.750]When do you want your parent to be able to call to log in
- [00:23:11.220]and help with things?
- [00:23:13.080]It might be that student bill that needs to get paid.
- [00:23:16.380]There's a lot of different reasons
- [00:23:17.490]why you'll want to have that conversation
- [00:23:19.590]when you want your family member regarding
- [00:23:21.900]to be able to call and help you out.
- [00:23:24.810]You can look at the UNL website, just online.
- [00:23:28.710]You can search UNL FERPA or just this ferpa.unl.edu,
- [00:23:32.490]and I'll give you steps.
- [00:23:33.570]So student, you can log in and give access and say,
- [00:23:37.470]I just want it to be financial, or anything.
- [00:23:40.170]It could be financial and grades and class schedule,
- [00:23:43.080]but you get to decide who has that information.
- [00:23:49.500]So I think the key thing with that is that,
- [00:23:53.790]you wanna make sure that if you need assistance
- [00:23:56.610]with your parent or guardian,
- [00:23:58.710]that they have the ability to do so.
- [00:24:00.330]So that that way Jen and I,
- [00:24:02.250]if you want them to be able to call us,
- [00:24:04.770]that we are able to talk to your parent or guardian
- [00:24:07.620]or other family member who you've given information to.
- [00:24:11.610]We're able to share some information with them
- [00:24:13.920]rather than talking in hypotheticals.
- [00:24:20.280]So what's next?
- [00:24:21.840]You have the opportunity, you and your parent or guardian,
- [00:24:25.410]to attend our virtual family town hall
- [00:24:28.020]where you're going to learn from
- [00:24:30.153]or get to meet our leadership team, our dean,
- [00:24:33.480]several of our associate deans.
- [00:24:35.520]Jen and I will usually be there as well.
- [00:24:38.040]And it's really kind of an opening question
- [00:24:40.530]and answer session.
- [00:24:41.580]So it's a great opportunity to get questions answered
- [00:24:44.580]right before the semester begins.
- [00:24:47.520]And then we're excited to welcome you to Hawks Hall
- [00:24:51.980]in the College of Business the week before classes begin.
- [00:24:55.200]On Thursday, August 17th,
- [00:24:56.970]there will be a welcome program
- [00:24:59.040]where you're going to get to see more
- [00:25:00.960]where some of your classes are,
- [00:25:02.220]especially where that BSAD 111 class
- [00:25:05.040]and recitation sections, our discussion sections.
- [00:25:08.070]You're gonna meet your instructor,
- [00:25:09.330]again, meet the dean in person,
- [00:25:11.220]and meet potentially some strengths coaches
- [00:25:13.650]who'll work with one-on-one in that BSAD 111 class.
- [00:25:17.130]Plus, it's a great opportunity to get a free T-shirt
- [00:25:19.470]and some snacks as you enter into the semester.
- [00:25:24.090]That first week of school on Friday, we're gonna have
- [00:25:26.850]our College of Business Back to School Bash,
- [00:25:29.190]and that's for everyone to attend.
- [00:25:31.200]The College Welcome Program
- [00:25:32.490]is just for our incoming students like you,
- [00:25:34.890]whereas the Back to School Bash is going to be for everyone
- [00:25:37.710]in the College of Business.
- [00:25:39.240]So it's gonna have a lot more opportunities to meet juniors,
- [00:25:42.180]seniors, those upper class students,
- [00:25:44.820]in addition to our faculty and staff.
- [00:25:46.890]We really wanna make sure
- [00:25:47.880]that your semester starts off on a right note.
- [00:25:51.300]We'd also encourage your families to sign up
- [00:25:53.490]on this QR code for our e-newsletter
- [00:25:56.040]so that that way they can get the invitation
- [00:25:58.140]to that virtual family town hall
- [00:26:00.330]and then also hear a little bit more
- [00:26:01.830]about what's going on at the College of Business.
- [00:26:04.290]We'll highlight different students
- [00:26:06.150]and student organizations, alumni, faculty members as well,
- [00:26:10.050]so that that way they can say,
- [00:26:11.977]"Oh, this student did this internship
- [00:26:14.340]or this student organization,"
- [00:26:16.230]and kind of have some inside interest
- [00:26:18.750]into the College of Business themselves.
- [00:26:25.020]Here is our contact information.
- [00:26:26.610]You are more than welcome to take a picture of this,
- [00:26:29.310]take a screen clip so that you have it.
- [00:26:31.740]Feel free to reach out to Dr. Larson and I
- [00:26:33.450]anytime you have questions.
- [00:26:35.520]We'll always check that FERPA box
- [00:26:37.200]to see how much we can visit with you.
- [00:26:40.590]But students, again, feel free to start with your advisor,
- [00:26:44.220]but then you're welcome to reach out to us
