- [00:00:05.250]Hi, and welcome to Teaching with Technology
- [00:00:08.100]from Tech EDGE.
- [00:00:10.350]And I'm Guy Trainin,
- [00:00:12.210]I'm a Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:15.210]I'm Chrystal Liu,
- [00:00:16.230]I'm the World Language Specialist
- [00:00:17.970]at Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:20.820]And today we're talking about Flippity.
- [00:00:22.957]Flippity, it's fun to say, I'll be honest.
- [00:00:26.130]And it is a great website that has a lot of applications
- [00:00:30.823]that you can use.
- [00:00:32.550]They've got lots of games and ways
- [00:00:34.590]to really engage learners.
- [00:00:36.840]And you can see right now, I've got it on my iPad.
- [00:00:41.670]I've got it also on my computer.
- [00:00:43.050]You can get it in both locations.
- [00:00:45.450]You just go to flippity.net and you will be able to find it.
- [00:00:49.680]So the first thing we're gonna look at is,
- [00:00:52.392]Quiz Show.
- [00:00:53.225]All right.
- [00:00:54.058]Quiz Show is like everybody's favorite quiz show
- [00:00:58.230]that we cannot use the name of because it is copyrighted.
- [00:01:03.270]But when you see it, you will know what we're talking about.
- [00:01:06.180]So can you show me what I need to do
- [00:01:08.190]to get a quiz show going?
- [00:01:10.740]Yeah.
- [00:01:12.960]Do you want to make you one?
- [00:01:14.310]Hm mm.
- [00:01:15.311]So you can go to Instructions
- [00:01:17.610]and there is a template.
- [00:01:19.950]Uh huh.
- [00:01:20.783]So I'm switching to the template and the templates...
- [00:01:23.970]Make a Copy.
- [00:01:25.620]Make a Copy. Thank you.
- [00:01:27.330]And you can see that that works in Google Sheets.
- [00:01:29.820]So you do have to have access to Google to work from that.
- [00:01:35.160]And that is the one thing that you have to think about.
- [00:01:38.580]Access to Google is necessary to make it work from a...
- [00:01:43.513]Yeah, these are the questions you can edit.
- [00:01:47.160]You can clean the whole cell and add your questions.
- [00:01:51.480]Hm mm.
- [00:01:52.313]So let's, oh, this is the final Quiz Show.
- [00:01:56.070]Yeah. Not "Jeopardy." Quiz Show.
- [00:01:58.290]And you can see the questions.
- [00:02:01.530]There's question and answer, Q & A.
- [00:02:04.320]And there are the values, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500.
- [00:02:08.940]And so you can use those,
- [00:02:11.100]or you can just go in and edit
- [00:02:15.240]like you would edit anything else, right?
- [00:02:18.126]Yes.
- [00:02:18.959]And so you can plug in and in World Language,
- [00:02:21.690]and we really want to use the target language
- [00:02:24.390]as much as possible for questions and answer.
- [00:02:26.760]Sometimes we can alternate and use one language
- [00:02:29.610]and then the answer be in another language,
- [00:02:32.280]in the target language.
- [00:02:33.540]So there are ways to consider what level of users we have.
- [00:02:39.810]And then if I want to to share it with students,
- [00:02:44.700]where do I go?
- [00:02:47.400]Just in the template, there is a tab says,
- [00:02:52.680]yeah, shall we go back? So I will go back
- [00:02:54.210]to my template, yes.
- [00:02:55.980]On the top, it says, Get the Link Here.
- [00:02:58.170]Oh, here's the link.
- [00:02:59.910]Yes.
- [00:03:00.743]So I can just send my students a link or...
- [00:03:03.060]We can play in class.
- [00:03:04.527]Like a "Jeopardy" game or something like that.
- [00:03:08.220]All right. It's not "Jeopardy."
- [00:03:09.750]It's Quiz Show.
- [00:03:10.583]Quiz Show, yes. We have to say that.
- [00:03:12.720]So we can go from there.
- [00:03:15.428]All right. Yeah.
- [00:03:16.770]And continue to play. And this is what
- [00:03:17.603]it looks like there.
- [00:03:18.450]And we're ready to play.
- [00:03:19.650]And I will have World Capitals for 100.
- [00:03:22.770]What capital city opened the first subway in 1863.
- [00:03:28.380]Ah, is it Great Britain, or not sure?
- [00:03:31.710]You say it's London?
- [00:03:32.543]I think it's Paris.
- [00:03:33.471]Oh, okay.
- [00:03:34.740]Where do I write the answer?
- [00:03:36.640]Oh, the students need to write the answer, right?
- [00:03:40.156]Yes.
- [00:03:40.989]All right, so the students need to write the answer.
- [00:03:43.410]London, England, you got the point.
- [00:03:45.814]I did not. All right.
- [00:03:48.000]You can see how that works and how you can really create
- [00:03:51.510]a rich experience for students,
- [00:03:54.060]especially if there's a day where you want to do
- [00:03:57.210]some kind of a review,
- [00:03:58.950]or you're feeling that students are less engaged
- [00:04:01.830]and you want to kind of, create that excitement.
- [00:04:05.070]That's a way to use that.
- [00:04:06.300]All right, what else can we do with this?
- [00:04:08.640]We can also do Manipulatives.
- [00:04:11.130]All right.
- [00:04:11.963]So if we go back to the Flippity website -
- [00:04:14.880]Yes. we can find Manipulatives.
- [00:04:18.003]Look for, you see Flashcards.
- [00:04:20.670]Everything. Virtual Breakout.
- [00:04:22.920]I mean, there's a lot that you can look at
- [00:04:25.680]but we are going to look at creating.
- [00:04:29.160]And you can see, you can actually do it in real time,
- [00:04:31.710]you can create the words.
- [00:04:32.820]Right now, it's got all kinds of kids names,
- [00:04:35.580]but that's not one way or the other.
- [00:04:38.280]And then you can give it a different name.
- [00:04:40.590]So you can say, you know, this is,
- [00:04:43.680]and I'm gonna use... Live sentence
- [00:04:45.240]or living sentence or whatever.
- [00:04:47.513]Yes.
- [00:04:48.600]And so I'm going to say,
- [00:04:51.908]I'm, on purpose, using target language.
- [00:04:55.800]And so you can see that we can Generate that game,
- [00:04:58.650]and generate, create it in real time.
- [00:05:00.930]So you can prepare this in advance with a template,
- [00:05:03.660]but you can also create things in real time.
- [00:05:06.360]And what I love about that
- [00:05:07.890]is you can create it as the teacher,
- [00:05:09.840]but you can actually have groups of kids
- [00:05:11.750]going on the website without having to log in,
- [00:05:15.000]and creating their own games
- [00:05:16.590]and then challenging their classmates to play.
- [00:05:20.340]And then you can organize things.
- [00:05:22.650]So this is just like playing with magnets.
- [00:05:24.810]And the advantage here?
- [00:05:26.280]Is you have hands-on activities on the spot,
- [00:05:29.790]so students can actually, you know, talk to each other,
- [00:05:34.110]figure out and making sentences.
- [00:05:36.240]And also they can do, you can assign like, characterizing.
- [00:05:41.310]Yeah.
- [00:05:42.143]Or grouping or things like that.
- [00:05:43.350]Because it also allows us to put background.
- [00:05:46.724]Yeah.
- [00:05:48.750]With the Manipulatives for example,
- [00:05:50.970]we can put like, Venn diagrams,
- [00:05:53.010]we can put T chart and things like that.
- [00:05:55.527]And the other thing is, which we love the magnets for,
- [00:05:59.280]is it allows us to create in the target language,
- [00:06:01.920]not just words.
- [00:06:03.270]Because when we think about Flashcards
- [00:06:04.980]and we think about the Quiz Show and all of that,
- [00:06:07.590]it's more about vocabulary.
- [00:06:09.090]Here we can do whole sentences.
- [00:06:11.550]So you can reorganize to do sentences
- [00:06:14.456]and you've created one in Chinese.
- [00:06:17.550]And so I'm going to scan,
- [00:06:19.260]so if you can make a QR code for me so I can log in,
- [00:06:23.460]and I'm going to use, in this case, my iPad.
- [00:06:27.360]And you can immediately see
- [00:06:29.030]that now I've gotten all of the words.
- [00:06:33.480]And translated! That's interesting.
- [00:06:36.810]It immediately translated with Google Translate
- [00:06:39.090]because I've got Google Translate embedded there.
- [00:06:41.910]So that was very interesting.
- [00:06:43.530]I kind of enjoyed that.
- [00:06:44.730]And now you can start categorizing
- [00:06:48.210]the different animals. The cat and dog.
- [00:06:52.170]And so you can see how easily you can manipulate.
- [00:06:54.660]And they've created this Venn diagram.
- [00:06:56.280]It doesn't have to be a Venn diagram, right?
- [00:06:58.200]It can just be anything else.
- [00:07:00.990]But it's very easy to manipulate.
- [00:07:03.600]And it is also easy to manipulate on a laptop
- [00:07:07.770]or on a Google Chromebook,
- [00:07:10.170]but I actually love the way you can use it
- [00:07:13.590]on mobile devices.
- [00:07:16.050]And the website itself is optimized
- [00:07:19.680]for using mobile devices.
- [00:07:21.570]So if you do have the opportunity
- [00:07:23.040]to use mobile devices in a classroom,
- [00:07:24.810]especially with some with younger kids
- [00:07:26.730]where the touch technology works a lot better,
- [00:07:29.400]that's really good as well.
- [00:07:31.470]All right. What's next?
- [00:07:33.178]Okay, the next one I want to say we want to check Bingo,
- [00:07:37.260]because it's a lot of work for teachers
- [00:07:40.050]to actually to prepare bingo.
- [00:07:42.390]Because we need to create the sheets, bingo sheets.
- [00:07:45.690]And then once we finish one round,
- [00:07:48.360]we will have new bingo sheets.
- [00:07:50.220]That's a lot of paper.
- [00:07:53.070]But with this website we can create one bingo.
- [00:07:57.930]Yeah.
- [00:07:58.763]And we play with kids, we set the bingo.
- [00:08:02.250]When we start to play, we send the sheets to kids.
- [00:08:06.240]When we finish one round,
- [00:08:07.650]you just click,
- [00:08:08.520]a new set of sheets -
- [00:08:10.020]Yeah. will be sent to kids.
- [00:08:11.370]So we save a lot of paper.
- [00:08:14.010]Yes. And you can do that still with printing.
- [00:08:16.320]So you can send your bingo to print.
- [00:08:19.680]Yes.
- [00:08:20.513]But you can also keep it digital,
- [00:08:21.990]which is what we'd like you to do
- [00:08:23.580]because we'd like less paper being wasted.
- [00:08:26.070]And if you've got enough devices in the classroom,
- [00:08:28.530]that's a much more effective way to do things.
- [00:08:31.530]Because the one thing about bingo is, once you are done,
- [00:08:34.410]you have to throw it out.
- [00:08:35.820]You can't really reuse bingo
- [00:08:38.490]unless you're using with counters.
- [00:08:40.110]I guess you can do it with plastic counters,
- [00:08:42.070]but less helpful.
- [00:08:43.800]So again, I'm going to create very quickly,
- [00:08:46.320]I like the Quick Create.
- [00:08:47.970]You can create this idea of using the template,
- [00:08:50.610]but you can also do a Quick Create,
- [00:08:53.100]which is what I'm going to do right now.
- [00:08:55.350]I'm gonna use Hebrew because it's the world language
- [00:08:59.580]that I know well.
- [00:09:02.760]And these are pronouns, for example.
- [00:09:06.120]And then we can do some verbs
- [00:09:10.200]and some family members, let's say.
- [00:09:16.780]Or some animals.
- [00:09:18.720]Yeah, maybe some animals.
- [00:09:22.590]So you can create those.
- [00:09:27.480]Let try a few more.
- [00:09:30.030]And this is not enough,
- [00:09:31.560]because you need 24 terms to make a minimum
- [00:09:34.890]of 24 times for a bingo.
- [00:09:36.630]Obviously, it's better if there's a little bit more,
- [00:09:39.030]'cause it creates a variety and then it randomizes.
- [00:09:41.790]So you can see, I can give it a name.
- [00:09:44.910]So I can call it, you know,
- [00:09:49.080]let me do this.
- [00:09:53.499]I said, Guy's Bingo.
- [00:09:57.030]No, auto correct.
- [00:10:01.560]That's funny.
- [00:10:03.180]It did not like the word bingo,
- [00:10:04.770]because it's not really a Hebrew word.
- [00:10:07.320]And now you can see the list of terms.
- [00:10:09.570]So you can actually select, erase and mix them up.
- [00:10:13.140]And then you can see that you can actually print
- [00:10:16.770]and you can say, how many random boards do I want here?
- [00:10:20.460]And do I want to have free space or not?
- [00:10:22.920]So I don't know what happens if I say no
- [00:10:24.930]but we will see in a second.
- [00:10:26.370]And I can also just broadcast this immediately
- [00:10:30.180]to my students.
- [00:10:31.013]I can use Google Classroom,
- [00:10:32.310]you can see that there's a button for that,
- [00:10:34.176]but there's also a QR code.
- [00:10:36.450]Everybody can scan the QR code and boom,
- [00:10:38.430]they're in the game, they're playing their thing,
- [00:10:41.160]and now you can see what it looks like.
- [00:10:43.260]Right.
- [00:10:44.093]And there's free space here
- [00:10:44.926]because I didn't create 24 terms.
- [00:10:47.100]But you can see how effective it is.
- [00:10:49.770]And this is great for some vocabulary practice,
- [00:10:52.050]right? Yes.
- [00:10:52.883]And again, a moment that we want to motivate our kids.
- [00:10:56.760]So in closing, what are the most important thing
- [00:11:00.780]that you want teachers to remember about Flippity?
- [00:11:03.780]Flippity is easy to use.
- [00:11:05.407]There are different,
- [00:11:07.382]actually, more than 20 templates you can use
- [00:11:10.800]to create different activities on the go,
- [00:11:13.490]because every template is provided.
- [00:11:17.040]So we just need to add in our own content or questions
- [00:11:21.000]or whatever you want to do with students,
- [00:11:23.400]and then share it with students.
- [00:11:25.080]And then they have hands-on activities
- [00:11:27.150]or to have like a game like Quiz Show,
- [00:11:30.810]the interactive game for the whole class to participate.
- [00:11:34.770]So this is a really, I have to say,
- [00:11:37.770]really useful website when we want to motivate students
- [00:11:42.390]on a not very exciting day.
- [00:11:44.771]Like this day. Yes,
- [00:11:45.604]sometimes maybe a snow day
- [00:11:46.437]and it's a third snow day in a row or something like that,
- [00:11:49.500]you can do that.
- [00:11:50.333]You can also assign it outside the classroom.
- [00:11:52.650]And that's important to think about what do we do
- [00:11:55.050]when kids are, maybe they do have a snow day in their home
- [00:11:58.590]and we want them to do an activity,
- [00:11:59.970]but we want it to be fun.
- [00:12:01.350]We can still do that because it can happen in real time,
- [00:12:04.590]but it doesn't have to happen in real time.
- [00:12:06.540]And my personal favorite is,
- [00:12:09.270]can you ask your students to create these?
- [00:12:11.430]So they have to generate the knowledge, focus on the words,
- [00:12:14.700]and then challenge their friends.
- [00:12:16.560]And I think that's a really good use.
- [00:12:17.940]It also means that you don't have to sit until late at night
- [00:12:20.713]preparing it the night before.
- [00:12:22.950]You can just bring the website up,.
- [00:12:26.130]make sure all of your students are there,
- [00:12:28.260]put them in groups,
- [00:12:29.190]and challenge them to create the most exciting game
- [00:12:32.280]that they can for their peers,
- [00:12:33.990]based on what they've learned.
- [00:12:35.550]Yeah, I really like the Random Name Picker it provided.
- [00:12:40.380]I just paste my whole list of students in there
- [00:12:43.444]and it gives me options like,
- [00:12:46.080]put students in pairs,
- [00:12:47.580]in groups of three, four five, like that.
- [00:12:50.700]You just group them
- [00:12:52.650]and the names will be posted on the screen.
- [00:12:56.670]So students just, you know,
- [00:12:59.430]go to their groups and start to work.
- [00:13:02.010]All right, so today we talked about Flippity
- [00:13:05.130]and we'll see you next time
- [00:13:07.020]on "Teaching World Language with Technology."
- [00:13:09.780]Thank you. On Tech EDGE.
