- [00:00:17.730]and the community.
- [00:00:19.980]You might be asking,
- [00:00:21.360]what is the William H. Thompson Scholars Learning Community?
- [00:00:24.660]Often referred to as WHT on campus,
- [00:00:27.750]the William H. Thompson Scholars Learning Community
- [00:00:29.970]is a college transitional program designed
- [00:00:32.550]to help incoming scholars transition from high school
- [00:00:35.460]to college settings and expectations.
- [00:00:38.400]All scholars earning the Susan T. Buffett scholarship
- [00:00:41.310]attending UNL, are automatically a part
- [00:00:44.010]of the WHT Learning Community.
- [00:00:46.620]This includes you as a new scholar,
- [00:00:49.260]all the way to our fifth year seniors.
- [00:00:51.810]We have about a thousand scholars
- [00:00:53.880]on UNL's campus as part of the WHT community.
- [00:00:58.110]The WHT team has a great staff
- [00:01:01.140]of full-time professionals excited to support you
- [00:01:04.110]in coming to UNL and your journey as a college student.
- [00:01:08.100]You'll have many opportunities to interact
- [00:01:10.290]with the WHT staff in various activities and events.
- [00:01:14.790]Each scholar will be assigned one
- [00:01:16.620]of the program coordinators as their point of contact
- [00:01:19.170]for your Susan T. Buffett scholarship.
- [00:01:21.870]You'll have a great opportunity to work
- [00:01:23.460]with your program coordinator in your freshman seminar class
- [00:01:26.760]that all first year scholars will take in the fall.
- [00:01:30.000]Other great resources include your assistant directors,
- [00:01:32.970]administrative coordinator, faculty coordinator,
- [00:01:35.580]and director.
- [00:01:37.410]Each of these individuals plays a part
- [00:01:39.660]in the mission values of WHT.
- [00:01:43.200]One of the greatest relationships and support you'll receive
- [00:01:45.810]as a WHT Scholar is with your peer mentor.
- [00:01:49.710]Peer mentors are upper division scholars in the community
- [00:01:53.070]that are here to support your transition to college
- [00:01:55.650]as a fellow scholar in the community.
- [00:01:58.290]You will regularly interact with your peer mentor
- [00:02:00.930]throughout the year through WHT events,
- [00:02:03.450]your freshman seminar class, and one-on-ones.
- [00:02:07.080]As a current scholar, your peer mentor can assist you
- [00:02:09.930]with questions and concerns about being a student
- [00:02:12.600]at UNL and transitioning to college expectations.
- [00:02:16.350]Each peer mentor has anywhere between six to eight mentees.
- [00:02:20.730]This group of mentees will include you
- [00:02:22.920]and other new scholars as a peer mentor group.
- [00:02:26.370]You'll be able to interact and engage
- [00:02:27.990]with your peer mentor group throughout the academic year,
- [00:02:30.720]with WHT events and your freshman seminar class.
- [00:02:34.920]We want to ensure you understand what to expect
- [00:02:37.620]and the next steps in summertime.
- [00:02:40.200]Please schedule your academic advising appointment
- [00:02:42.630]as soon as you can.
- [00:02:44.520]You should have received information
- [00:02:46.080]from the new student enrollment communication
- [00:02:48.600]on how to schedule with your academic advisor.
- [00:02:51.960]If you have completed this step already, that's great.
- [00:02:55.830]During your academic advising meeting,
- [00:02:58.080]you will build your fall schedule.
- [00:03:00.480]We ask that all scholars meet with their academic advisors
- [00:03:03.870]and have their fall class schedule made by July 7th.
- [00:03:08.760]As a WHT scholar,
- [00:03:10.650]you'll need to have EDPS 97 on your fall schedule.
- [00:03:15.330]This is your freshman seminar class,
- [00:03:17.430]taught by your assigned program coordinator,
- [00:03:19.770]and your peer mentor will be in the class
- [00:03:21.810]as a teaching assistant.
- [00:03:23.940]You will also need an additional WHT class
- [00:03:26.670]on your schedule.
- [00:03:28.440]WHT classes includes a list of science, math,
- [00:03:32.520]history, social sciences, and other classes.
- [00:03:36.630]WHT classes are the same content
- [00:03:39.210]as the general population classes,
- [00:03:41.280]but they are only for WHT scholars.
- [00:03:44.370]These classes are mostly capped between 20 to 25 students,
- [00:03:48.270]instead of large auditorium classrooms.
- [00:03:51.300]Your academic advisor will have a list
- [00:03:53.370]of the available WHT classes for the fall semester,
- [00:03:56.490]but you will be sent the list as well.
- [00:03:59.430]Other next steps specific to WHT scholars
- [00:04:02.130]include completing the WHT New Scholar Inventory.
- [00:04:07.110]This allows us to get to know you more,
- [00:04:09.390]what aspects of college you are excited about,
- [00:04:11.670]and what challenges you foresee.
- [00:04:14.130]This email will be sent to you,
- [00:04:15.600]including a link to complete the inventory.
- [00:04:18.840]In July, your assigned program coordinator will reach out
- [00:04:22.590]to schedule a Zoom one-on-one meeting with you.
- [00:04:25.650]This will be their opportunity to introduce themselves,
- [00:04:28.770]welcome you to the community,
- [00:04:30.390]and a chance to ask any questions or concerns
- [00:04:33.180]that you may have before the school year starts.
- [00:04:36.360]Lastly, please add the WHT orientation to your schedule.
