- [00:00:03.480]Welcome everybody, this is University Housing recording
- [00:00:07.890]their NSC presentation.
- [00:00:15.630]Welcome everyone to Live at Nebraska,
- [00:00:18.030]an overview of campus housing here
- [00:00:20.010]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:21.390]My name's Lucas D Novotny.
- [00:00:22.830]I serve as the Executive Director of Housing
- [00:00:24.840]and Dining here at the university, and I'm very excited
- [00:00:28.260]to see you here today at orientation in person.
- [00:00:31.260]It's very, very great to hear you, see from you.
- [00:00:34.380]Before I get started, I know that in your bags
- [00:00:36.300]you're gonna have a handout.
- [00:00:37.530]I wanna take an opportunity for you to grab that handout
- [00:00:40.110]that we have today, we'll give you a lot
- [00:00:41.910]of the information that you're probably gonna want to know
- [00:00:45.120]as I progress through the presentation.
- [00:00:47.250]But if you're a digital folk person who wants
- [00:00:50.370]to download it here, here's a quick QR code for you
- [00:00:53.340]to download so you have it on your device as well.
- [00:00:55.170]But again, that should be in your packet ready for you.
- [00:00:58.920]Basically, my presentation today
- [00:01:00.600]will walk right through that handout for you.
- [00:01:03.750]I mean, that's a great takeaway for you,
- [00:01:05.370]if there's any questions
- [00:01:06.360]or any further information that you need,
- [00:01:08.130]a couple good QR codes there for you today
- [00:01:12.570]but you've probably already heard me
- [00:01:15.000]or some of my colleagues talk,
- [00:01:16.860]maybe your admissions counselor or your NSC leader talk
- [00:01:20.040]about why you live on campus, right?
- [00:01:22.620]You've been to an Admitted Student Day,
- [00:01:24.870]you've explored your opportunity here at the university.
- [00:01:27.540]And I just wanna kind of reiterate some points
- [00:01:29.460]that we believe in, right?
- [00:01:30.990]So first of all, students live here.
- [00:01:32.550]Students live with us at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:35.120]We are a residential community and we know that
- [00:01:38.430]and we believe in that on-campus experience.
- [00:01:40.740]And so I just kind of wanted to put that up front
- [00:01:43.170]that is where our students are, right?
- [00:01:46.140]We know that our students are better prepared
- [00:01:47.670]as a result of living with us.
- [00:01:49.170]They're more academic successful, they're connected
- [00:01:51.450]to campus at higher rates,
- [00:01:53.820]they demonstrate greater leadership capacity,
- [00:01:56.340]they persist to graduation at higher rates.
- [00:01:58.710]All of those things that we believe, right?
- [00:02:00.990]Our students perform better by living on campus.
- [00:02:04.050]But you know that already,
- [00:02:05.670]you've talked about that, you've made that decision.
- [00:02:08.910]You are a part of wanting to be on campus here
- [00:02:12.420]at the university.
- [00:02:13.380]And then you've probably heard my colleague Matt Nelson
- [00:02:17.190]if you came to one of our webinars or if you heard me talk
- [00:02:20.790]in the mid of student days, this idea of living
- [00:02:23.970]on campus is much greater than just, you know,
- [00:02:28.677]a roof over your head.
- [00:02:31.020]There is so many opportunities here.
- [00:02:33.660]There's live-in professional staff to support you.
- [00:02:37.080]There are programs to engage you,
- [00:02:40.680]basically being in our halls,
- [00:02:42.870]and living with us, you have an baked in community
- [00:02:48.150]that can help you, that can support you,
- [00:02:51.781]and help you thrive here while at the university.
- [00:02:54.870]But again, I don't think I'm telling you
- [00:02:57.360]anything that you don't know already
- [00:02:59.340]by being this far with us.
- [00:03:01.260]So I just wanted to kind of baseline a couple
- [00:03:04.290]of those key points for you.
- [00:03:06.300]But I bet you're here
- [00:03:07.560]because you want to know about what's next.
- [00:03:09.720]You want to know about what now, what now?
- [00:03:12.090]I'm already at orientation and depending on where you are,
- [00:03:15.180]depending on what day this presentation's being delivered,
- [00:03:17.894]the process looks just a little bit different, right?
- [00:03:20.670]But I'm gonna talk to you today about room selection.
- [00:03:23.580]I'm gonna cover some meal plan selection things,
- [00:03:25.530]just again to reiterate that point.
- [00:03:27.780]And then I'm gonna talk about move-in, right?
- [00:03:29.580]I'm gonna talk about you're here,
- [00:03:31.650]and this idea and this excitement that comes
- [00:03:34.650]with moving into your residence hall room here in the fall.
- [00:03:36.660]So those are the kind of matriculating you
- [00:03:39.390]through my presentation.
- [00:03:41.396]Those are the next three things that we're gonna talk about.
- [00:03:43.397]Okay, so I'm gonna talk
- [00:03:44.230]to you first about room selection, right?
- [00:03:47.070]How you find that Husker Home, right?
- [00:03:48.870]So again, depending on where we are
- [00:03:51.540]in the orientation cycle here, you are either getting ready
- [00:03:55.989]get your appointment time
- [00:03:57.990]or you already have your appointment time.
- [00:03:59.910]You either identified your roommate or you've matched
- [00:04:02.640]with somebody and you have that appointment time to go
- [00:04:06.330]into the portal and select that room.
- [00:04:08.670]Remember, the individual with the earliest time between you
- [00:04:11.490]and your roommate need to go in there and select that room.
- [00:04:14.730]Then you'll pull in that roommate
- [00:04:16.557]and assign them to that additional space.
- [00:04:19.350]Okay, so we know, and kind of again, wherever you are,
- [00:04:24.871]that there are some students who want to live
- [00:04:27.990]in the suite style configuration,
- [00:04:29.880]wanna live in the traditional halls.
- [00:04:31.800]Remember that majority of our students, by percentage,
- [00:04:34.590]the majority of our students live
- [00:04:35.760]in that traditional configuration, in that,
- [00:04:38.820]as the old housing guy here, that's what I believe in.
- [00:04:41.190]And that is what we believe in
- [00:04:42.330]'cause it's a great vibrant community.
- [00:04:44.220]And we know that some of your peers and some of you
- [00:04:46.230]who desire a little bit more privacy may be assigned
- [00:04:49.530]to the suites and that's great too.
- [00:04:51.750]Both of those types of communities have pros and cons.
- [00:04:55.530]And that's why we will allow you to change rooms up
- [00:04:59.250]until early July to kind of find that right fit for you.
- [00:05:04.650]Remember though, what I will say here,
- [00:05:06.600]kind of some unsolicited advice,
- [00:05:08.370]is your room assignment and your experience
- [00:05:11.250]in the residence halls is a lot what you make it, right?
- [00:05:14.340]So how you engage in the hall,
- [00:05:16.230]how you connect with your roommate doesn't really matter
- [00:05:19.080]what necessarily the room is over your head.
- [00:05:21.630]You can have a great experience and it's evidenced by a lot
- [00:05:24.480]of reasons that you can have a great experience
- [00:05:26.670]regardless of the hall.
- [00:05:28.380]And so that's one of the points today
- [00:05:29.880]that I want to reiterate for you is that this experience
- [00:05:33.000]of living on campus is what you make it.
- [00:05:35.700]Okay, but once you go in there
- [00:05:37.890]and you've selected your room, right?
- [00:05:40.740]We want you to select your bed height
- [00:05:42.780]depending on what location you are in, what room
- [00:05:45.750]that you have selected, you have a couple different options.
- [00:05:48.720]You either have two or three options depending
- [00:05:50.490]on some of the in-room inventory that you have,
- [00:05:54.060]the furniture that you have.
- [00:05:55.890]So well, just tell us what you want.
- [00:05:57.320]Do you want your bed load?
- [00:05:58.350]Do you want your bed lofted?
- [00:05:59.250]Do you want that captain's height bed?
- [00:06:01.410]And we'll have it ready for you when you when you move in.
- [00:06:03.510]Kind of that turnkey type of service
- [00:06:05.550]that our facility staff loves to provide you.
- [00:06:08.250]So just to go in there,
- [00:06:09.900]and identify that room height or that bed height, excuse me.
- [00:06:12.690]And it'll be ready for you when you get here.
- [00:06:15.930]And then, we want you to also choose a meal plan, right?
- [00:06:19.530]And you've heard a little bit
- [00:06:20.430]about our dynamic meal plan program
- [00:06:23.430]as you've kind of explored this idea
- [00:06:27.690]of becoming an university student, a Husker.
- [00:06:31.890]So I just wanted to add just a little bit more finer point
- [00:06:35.550]on that now that you get the opportunity
- [00:06:37.980]to select your meal plan, okay?
- [00:06:40.380]Find the right fit for you.
- [00:06:43.110]Remember, each one of our plans
- [00:06:45.150]as a first year student has both meal swipes
- [00:06:48.450]and dining dollars.
- [00:06:49.920]And they have different amounts of each depending
- [00:06:53.959]on the experience that you want to have.
- [00:06:57.000]They're equally priced and it's just that sort of balance
- [00:07:00.810]of dining dollars to meal plans that's allows you
- [00:07:03.226]to ensure that you're well fed, right?
- [00:07:06.180]That's first, that's the first goal.
- [00:07:08.160]But second that you're able to use your meal plan
- [00:07:10.590]the way that you see fit.
- [00:07:12.960]Are you a morning person?
- [00:07:14.730]Do you get up
- [00:07:15.563]and want to eat those three square meals a day?
- [00:07:18.150]Do you want the flexibility of more dining dollars
- [00:07:20.340]because you wanna grab that latte between classes?
- [00:07:23.430]Again, this is all up to you,
- [00:07:25.140]and truly there are no wrong choices here.
- [00:07:28.860]What I might suggest is you select that meal plan right
- [00:07:32.820]in the middle that you think that you want,
- [00:07:36.510]and then there's a meal plan change period, right?
- [00:07:38.670]So up until the first week of class that you can change
- [00:07:42.690]that meal plan, that will allow you to kind of get here,
- [00:07:47.580]get set, figure out that first schedule,
- [00:07:50.430]figure out how you want to kind of navigate,
- [00:07:53.970]and then you make you make your choice, okay?
- [00:07:57.090]There's no pressure here.
- [00:07:59.053]If you make a meal plan selection,
- [00:08:02.610]and then you live with us this whole semester
- [00:08:04.590]and you realize, man, I think I want to change that,
- [00:08:07.470]I think I want to add some more meals in the dining hall
- [00:08:10.230]'cause those all you care to eat facilities
- [00:08:12.603]is how I want to navigate my dining program?
- [00:08:16.470]Great, the next semester, make that switch again
- [00:08:19.560]during that meal plan change period
- [00:08:22.890]in the first part of the semester.
- [00:08:24.660]Again, no pressure here.
- [00:08:26.670]But I do want to talk about what you're gonna see today here
- [00:08:29.310]at here on campus today in this orientation,
- [00:08:32.280]you're gonna get to visit our Selleck dining room, okay?
- [00:08:35.820]That is our mobile first dining room.
- [00:08:38.280]It's our most popular dining room on campus
- [00:08:41.700]for our students, right?
- [00:08:43.230]It is a little bit different than what you've expected
- [00:08:45.780]or maybe as you've imagined college dining, right?
- [00:08:49.950]Maybe that buffet or that cafeteria,
- [00:08:53.040]some of those icky words
- [00:08:54.030]that we don't like to use in dining.
- [00:08:56.400]This all you care to eat type
- [00:08:58.290]of just no options on the table,
- [00:09:01.500]that's not what we offer
- [00:09:02.760]to you at here at the university, right?
- [00:09:06.870]We do have that all you care to eat opportunity
- [00:09:10.200]if that's what you want.
- [00:09:11.460]But our mobile first Selleck Kitchen allows you
- [00:09:15.990]to customize a meal to your specifications,
- [00:09:20.010]order it ahead of time, have it waiting for you, right?
- [00:09:22.770]We know that our students are busy.
- [00:09:25.680]We know that classes, especially in your first year,
- [00:09:29.340]you might be over here and then you might be over there
- [00:09:32.010]and you have not a lot of time to do it.
- [00:09:34.260]You can order ahead.
- [00:09:35.640]You can come into the dining room,
- [00:09:38.430]just scan your QR code on your phone right there
- [00:09:40.830]on that dining app and then boom, that food's ready.
- [00:09:43.920]That's a adobo burrito, that's a pasta bueno, pasta serving,
- [00:09:47.880]that's a grains and greens, that's great salad for you.
- [00:09:50.700]Lots of options there at Selleck.
- [00:09:53.160]And you're gonna get to see that today.
- [00:09:54.600]It'll be a little bit modified 'cause again,
- [00:09:57.000]your new students don't have the app on your phone.
- [00:10:00.090]And we'll teach you that when you go over to Selleck,
- [00:10:03.150]get you all ready for the fall.
- [00:10:04.650]But we just wanted you to demonstrate that for you today
- [00:10:07.200]because it's really exciting.
- [00:10:08.910]It's the way that college dining is going.
- [00:10:11.895]And man, we're just really excited for you to see it today.
- [00:10:15.180]And so I wanted to put that up front
- [00:10:17.250]that that's what you're gonna get today.
- [00:10:18.930]And maybe that's not what you expected
- [00:10:20.460]and that's gonna be a great thing too.
- [00:10:23.310]But really next step, after you eat and after you select
- [00:10:26.310]that meal plan, you're thinking, how do I get in my hall?
- [00:10:29.610]Right, what does move-in look like?
- [00:10:31.350]How do I get it set up?
- [00:10:32.400]I wanna start to imagine myself here
- [00:10:35.430]at the university, right?
- [00:10:36.990]So this move-in process here
- [00:10:38.670]at the University of Nebraska is unlike any other, right?
- [00:10:41.880]Don't lift a finger, we got you covered.
- [00:10:44.340]Right, when you get here,
- [00:10:46.290]our move-in dates are from August 13th to August 16th.
- [00:10:49.950]You will get that time slot from our office,
- [00:10:52.950]depending on the hall that you are moving into.
- [00:10:55.920]Those hall assignments can be found on our website.
- [00:10:59.250]I'll give you a QR code here in a second
- [00:11:01.020]or it's on your handout like I suggested.
- [00:11:03.210]So depending on where you live,
- [00:11:06.750]we move in those halls on different days.
- [00:11:09.570]But when you show up at the Devaney center,
- [00:11:12.240]you're gonna check in,
- [00:11:13.140]you're gonna meet your residence life professional,
- [00:11:15.330]they're gonna walk you through kind
- [00:11:17.621]of a couple quick pieces of information.
- [00:11:19.800]And then you're gonna get going,
- [00:11:21.410]you're gonna show up to the hall,
- [00:11:23.520]a moving company is going to unload your car,
- [00:11:28.590]put it in the carts, take it up to your room,
- [00:11:31.200]and you don't really have to touch a finger.
- [00:11:33.660]That is a great service that we offer to you.
- [00:11:36.720]And sometimes parents, right?
- [00:11:38.400]You think, oh gosh, I'm gonna be sweaty and it's gonna be,
- [00:11:41.790]I gotta set up my student's room and I have to,
- [00:11:45.253]I have to get all this stuff done, right?
- [00:11:47.430]Some of the feedback that we get is
- [00:11:48.990]the moving process is almost too fast.
- [00:11:51.840]You're up, you're in, you're, oh gosh, now what do I do?
- [00:11:54.390]Okay, so plan for that,
- [00:11:55.830]that you don't have to have really strong backs
- [00:11:59.280]to move in here at the university,
- [00:12:00.930]that we have that stuff covered for you.
- [00:12:03.090]We want you to get in and we want it to be stress free
- [00:12:05.880]for you to just put those finer points
- [00:12:08.490]on your room and we'll do all the heavy lifting, right?
- [00:12:11.130]We're really excited that you're here
- [00:12:12.780]and we're gonna take care of you.
- [00:12:15.120]The one note that I would say here is that we want you to,
- [00:12:19.350]we'll load one vehicle,
- [00:12:21.390]that vehicle could be a very small sedan,
- [00:12:24.030]it could be a very large truck.
- [00:12:26.220]I might optimize here, a little pro tip,
- [00:12:28.260]I might optimize my opportunity
- [00:12:30.510]if you're trying to stuff a lot of things
- [00:12:32.932]in that residence hall room, right?
- [00:12:35.040]So think about what car you're bringing,
- [00:12:37.890]how you might load that up
- [00:12:39.960]'cause that car will be the one that drives up
- [00:12:41.790]to the residence halls
- [00:12:43.522]that gets the moving company unloading
- [00:12:46.170]and gets those stuff up to your residence hall room.
- [00:12:48.270]So maybe be a little strategic.
- [00:12:50.790]That might be my pro tip for you, okay?
- [00:12:54.420]Really, this presentation is quick, it's fast,
- [00:12:58.530]it's high, you know, really high pace, really,
- [00:13:01.770]I'm sort of at the end if you will, right?
- [00:13:04.560]I'll take some questions
- [00:13:05.580]'cause I know I probably breezed over
- [00:13:07.710]and there's always some very specific questions
- [00:13:11.040]about your experience and I'm happy to answer those here.
- [00:13:14.850]That's why I'm here.
- [00:13:16.110]But just kind of in summary, let's kind of review, right?
- [00:13:18.810]You're gonna select your room.
- [00:13:20.700]We're gonna want you to connect with that roommate
- [00:13:23.340]either here at your orientation
- [00:13:25.710]or throughout your process in the summer.
- [00:13:27.600]We really want you to start to get to meet that roommate,
- [00:13:32.010]who's gonna bring what, we don't need you to bring two
- [00:13:34.710]of everything, right?
- [00:13:36.150]So who's bringing the fridge?
- [00:13:37.770]The fridge is provided actually, who's gonna bring this?
- [00:13:40.440]And who's gonna bring, who's bringing the gaming system?
- [00:13:42.660]Who's bringing the TV?
- [00:13:44.670]Think about those things, right?
- [00:13:45.960]Connect, start to make a relationship.
- [00:13:48.450]Watch for that move-in information,
- [00:13:49.860]we'll continue to give you more and more information
- [00:13:52.860]as move-in approaches so that you can
- [00:13:54.840]and your families can be prepared.
- [00:13:57.180]That's really important.
- [00:13:59.610]And then, gosh, if I could be so bold here,
- [00:14:03.420]start to see yourself here.
- [00:14:04.920]We're really excited that you're here.
- [00:14:06.540]We're really excited that you've made this choice.
- [00:14:09.000]Start to imagine what it's like to stay up late
- [00:14:11.820]in the residence halls, to meet some new friends
- [00:14:13.770]down the hall, to get engaged in programs,
- [00:14:16.170]to maybe think about a leadership opportunity.
- [00:14:18.750]Plan those involvements, we're gonna give you
- [00:14:21.210]a lot of opportunities when you get here.
- [00:14:23.417]It's gonna be fast, it's gonna be furious here in many ways.
- [00:14:26.370]And we're excited about that.
- [00:14:27.570]But man, this is a big choice for you students
- [00:14:30.660]and we're super excited that you made that choice with us.
- [00:14:33.450]So start to imagine yourself there, right?
- [00:14:36.360]Imagine that yourself as a Husker in the halls
- [00:14:39.630]with us getting engaged, you know, having a lot of fun,
- [00:14:44.550]going to programs, meeting new people.
- [00:14:47.850]That's what college is all about
- [00:14:49.080]and that's what folks like me and all the folks
- [00:14:52.680]in housing and dining, you know, that's what gets us up
- [00:14:55.260]in the morning is this idea to get to serve you,
- [00:14:57.800]to get to live with you,
- [00:14:59.610]to get to do college with you and support you along the way.
- [00:15:02.970]Those are things that get us up in the morning,
- [00:15:06.000]that get us really excited and we're really, really,
- [00:15:09.210]really excited that we get to do that with you.
- [00:15:11.970]A couple extra QR codes for you
- [00:15:14.430]as I kind of come around the corner.
- [00:15:16.650]These are on your presentation thing.
- [00:15:18.240]Again, I would encourage you to kind of take a look at them.
- [00:15:22.860]But some information about move-in,
- [00:15:25.260]that's the site that a lot
- [00:15:26.760]of our move-in information we'll go to as well as
- [00:15:29.700]kind of what to bring, a good little checklist
- [00:15:31.650]for you just so you kind of get a better feel for it.
- [00:15:35.460]And again, in that idea of starting
- [00:15:36.870]to see yourself already here,
- [00:15:38.850]we had an opportunity for you to start to
- [00:15:40.080]show some hall pride, get our year shirt,
- [00:15:43.260]our swag shirt for this year, has your hall on the back
- [00:15:46.950]and really start to see yourself here at the university.
- [00:15:51.450]That concludes my presentation.
- [00:15:53.370]I'm happy to take any questions
- [00:15:56.010]that there are in the audience.
