- [00:00:01.860]Hi, everyone.
- [00:00:03.180]Welcome to New Student Enrollment
- [00:00:06.540]for the College of Agricultural Sciences
- [00:00:09.000]and Natural Resources, or CASNER for short.
- [00:00:12.420]We are so glad that you are here today
- [00:00:15.330]to learn more about the next steps in our college.
- [00:00:18.600]To get started, we certainly want you to know
- [00:00:21.660]who is who in the College of Agricultural Sciences
- [00:00:24.390]and Natural Resources, and so the head of the group
- [00:00:26.910]is our dean, Tiffany Heng-Moss.
- [00:00:30.150]She's a fabulous person who is a great resource.
- [00:00:32.790]She always puts students first,
- [00:00:34.620]so you can look forward to seeing her around campus
- [00:00:37.080]and her stopping you to ask questions,
- [00:00:39.570]see how things are going,
- [00:00:40.500]or maybe even sit down with you at lunch at the dining hall.
- [00:00:43.920]Our office is gonna be in transition
- [00:00:46.350]for the 2023/2024 academic year,
- [00:00:49.710]so you can find the CASNR dean's office staff
- [00:00:52.110]in the Nebraska East Union on the second floor
- [00:00:55.710]right next to the Herbie's market.
- [00:00:57.690]And our phone number is always the same,
- [00:00:59.730]so always reach out with any questions,
- [00:01:02.070]but look forward to seeing us more frequently.
- [00:01:05.370]We also have a great crew with our CASNR career center.
- [00:01:08.640]We have Julie, Darrell, and Stephanie,
- [00:01:11.400]who each have different jobs
- [00:01:12.720]but are all here to help coordinate next steps
- [00:01:15.540]that relate to jobs, internships, experiences for you,
- [00:01:20.310]and so keep those folks in mind.
- [00:01:22.680]They are also located in the East Campus Union
- [00:01:27.150]and they are on the third floor right above the Starbucks,
- [00:01:30.240]so keep them in mind with all your employment questions.
- [00:01:35.850]We also of course have our Ensuring Your Future program,
- [00:01:39.240]and this is our guarantee that every student
- [00:01:41.880]will receive at least one job offer
- [00:01:43.920]in their area of interest within six months of graduation
- [00:01:47.460]or we will pay to retrain you.
- [00:01:49.470]We're always excited when students come to CASNR,
- [00:01:52.650]and because we align our curriculum so closely
- [00:01:55.680]with the opportunities that you have in the career field,
- [00:01:58.200]this is pretty easy to do.
- [00:01:59.970]But this is the parts
- [00:02:01.290]that are gonna get you to those next steps.
- [00:02:03.000]We're gonna make sure you're academically ready
- [00:02:04.740]and we're gonna make sure you're ready
- [00:02:06.360]with your leadership skills,
- [00:02:07.890]and we're gonna make sure you have an internship
- [00:02:09.450]so you have great practice.
- [00:02:12.150]We're also blessed
- [00:02:13.170]to have the amazing CASNR Student Services Center,
- [00:02:16.260]and Megan, Sierra, and Michael
- [00:02:18.330]help all students in this area.
- [00:02:20.550]They run our programs like CASNR Cares,
- [00:02:22.860]Start Smart, Insider Connections, and any student outreach,
- [00:02:26.730]so look forward to hearing more from them as well.
- [00:02:30.480]One thing the Student Success team does
- [00:02:32.520]is run our CASNR Cares program,
- [00:02:34.440]and this is just the opportunity for students
- [00:02:37.800]when life happens to you to get some help.
- [00:02:40.290]And so this is a number I want you to save.
- [00:02:42.750]This is our main dean's office number.
- [00:02:44.910]It is connected to our cell phone
- [00:02:46.740]so someone will answer at any time,
- [00:02:49.080]and just ask for CASNR Cares if you need something.
- [00:02:52.350]But we wanted to make a way to have one point of contact
- [00:02:55.350]for students, families with any questions
- [00:02:58.740]about opportunities.
- [00:03:00.870]And our Student Success team is there for you
- [00:03:03.113]if you happen to need to get your appendix out
- [00:03:06.180]in an emergency fashion
- [00:03:07.770]and you're gonna miss a week of class.
- [00:03:09.540]Let them know.
- [00:03:10.560]We've had students who have had concussions
- [00:03:12.900]and were unable to make it to class
- [00:03:15.120]or even look at their screens.
- [00:03:16.650]Let us know. We can help with that.
- [00:03:18.630]If there's a student who is struggling emotionally
- [00:03:21.330]or academically or personally,
- [00:03:23.340]this is an amazing team to help.
- [00:03:25.260]And sometimes it's just hard,
- [00:03:27.600]the next steps of coming to college,
- [00:03:29.190]so these folks will take very good care.
- [00:03:34.530]They also are responsible for our class,
- [00:03:37.269]that's Agri 042, and that's CASNR Start Smart.
- [00:03:41.010]And the CASNR Start Smart is something
- [00:03:42.840]that all incoming students will take,
- [00:03:44.550]so transfers and freshmen.
- [00:03:46.800]And we have these five components that are part of it,
- [00:03:49.320]purpose, ownership, wellbeing,
- [00:03:50.880]engagement, and relationships.
- [00:03:52.710]You will hear more about this as part of the course
- [00:03:55.020]and as part of your experience at the university.
- [00:03:59.100]After today, after you have come
- [00:04:01.200]for your advising appointment, you'll get signed up
- [00:04:03.480]for CASNR Start Smart,
- [00:04:04.950]and that course usually comes open in late July,
- [00:04:08.760]and so you'll have a few weeks to work on this.
- [00:04:10.560]We ask that you do so before you come to campus in the fall
- [00:04:14.970]so that you've had all this done.
- [00:04:16.290]It's required for all incoming students.
- [00:04:18.120]It's pass/no pass, so it's not hard,
- [00:04:20.940]but it's something that we just wanna make sure
- [00:04:22.920]that you know what resources available,
- [00:04:24.900]make sure that you've claimed everything
- [00:04:26.730]you need to claim and that if you have any questions,
- [00:04:29.730]Megan is our contact for that.
- [00:04:32.760]We also wanna make sure you're connected
- [00:04:34.380]and stay connected when you're on campus,
- [00:04:36.150]so we have two different weekly emails, Insider Connections,
- [00:04:39.810]which has information on scholarships and opportunities
- [00:04:42.720]on campus, while the CASNR Career News
- [00:04:45.570]does an amazing job of keeping you updated
- [00:04:48.000]on internship opportunities and career fairs coming up
- [00:04:51.450]and what you need to do to be ready in that realm.
- [00:04:54.090]And then of course we have
- [00:04:55.050]all of our great CASNR social media profiles,
- [00:04:57.780]which hopefully you are already following,
- [00:04:59.910]but please check out these platforms
- [00:05:02.340]because you may see your students or your friends
- [00:05:05.190]or who knows as part of this.
- [00:05:08.970]So we would be remiss if we didn't talk a little bit
- [00:05:11.400]about some tips for student success,
- [00:05:13.290]and one of those tips that we always talk about
- [00:05:15.540]is academic advising.
- [00:05:17.010]And so students at CASNR are advised individually
- [00:05:20.400]by a very talented team of faculty and staff.
- [00:05:24.000]The advisor that you have as part
- [00:05:25.620]of your new student enrollment experience may be different
- [00:05:28.530]than your academic advisor,
- [00:05:30.270]but I promise that your full-time academic advisor
- [00:05:33.210]will be assigned to you by the first day of class,
- [00:05:35.460]and these will be listed in MyRed
- [00:05:37.980]so that you can see who that person is,
- [00:05:39.720]and then we use our MyPlan system,
- [00:05:41.970]which will I talk about shortly, to make appointments
- [00:05:45.510]so you'll hear more about that.
- [00:05:47.280]But your advisor's important for class scheduling
- [00:05:50.100]to help you navigate some of the courses.
- [00:05:52.530]I always say never drop a class
- [00:05:54.270]'til you've talked to your advisor.
- [00:05:56.130]They are great resources for you.
- [00:05:59.790]And we always like to stress getting organized
- [00:06:02.160]when you come to college.
- [00:06:03.270]And because I get to work with so many incoming freshmen,
- [00:06:06.240]I know that a lot of times
- [00:06:07.440]you haven't had to study in high school.
- [00:06:10.410]If you're a transfer student,
- [00:06:11.370]you probably have learned to study,
- [00:06:13.440]but figure out what works for you,
- [00:06:15.240]whether it's a paper planner,
- [00:06:16.560]an electronic one, a Google calendar, an Apple watch.
- [00:06:20.280]Whatever it is, keep that all in mind
- [00:06:22.710]and don't forget to download our academic calendar
- [00:06:25.680]so that you know what date our spring break is,
- [00:06:28.440]our fall break, how long our winter break is.
- [00:06:30.930]We'd hate for you to miss
- [00:06:31.920]any of those very important next steps.
- [00:06:35.580]We also want you to claim your @huskers UNL email.
- [00:06:39.930]This is where you get all kinds of great information,
- [00:06:44.310]any university communications.
- [00:06:45.780]So if a faculty member is sick one day
- [00:06:49.290]and is unable to come to class,
- [00:06:51.120]you will learn about it through your email
- [00:06:53.190]and through your Huskers email.
- [00:06:54.840]So make sure that you look at that, that you read it,
- [00:06:58.890]connect it to your smartphone or whatever you need to
- [00:07:02.430]and don't forget to look in your junk folder on occasion.
- [00:07:05.010]But your Huskers email is gonna be your go-to
- [00:07:07.350]for all university business.
- [00:07:10.310]And we know that there's a lot of things
- [00:07:13.500]you're gonna be doing when you come to college,
- [00:07:15.510]but showing up for class is really high on the list.
- [00:07:18.180]There's exciting things that happen there,
- [00:07:20.340]and we know that to be successful,
- [00:07:22.050]that is a step that you need to take.
- [00:07:23.610]We also want you to take advantage
- [00:07:25.320]of instructor office hours 'cause that gets you
- [00:07:27.840]a little chance to meet your faculty one-on-one,
- [00:07:30.720]to learn a little bit more about them,
- [00:07:33.360]and they get to know you,
- [00:07:34.410]which always comes in very, very handy.
- [00:07:38.820]We also really support
- [00:07:40.020]holistic student development for everyone,
- [00:07:42.210]so whether that's a research project like UCARE,
- [00:07:44.880]Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience,
- [00:07:48.210]whether it is an experiential learning experience,
- [00:07:52.380]internships, clubs, there are so many things you can do.
- [00:07:55.710]We want you to take advantage of all of those things
- [00:07:58.140]or as many of them as you're interested in.
- [00:08:01.560]Keep in mind that the Education Abroad trips
- [00:08:03.630]through the College of Agricultural Sciences
- [00:08:05.730]and Natural Resources
- [00:08:07.200]tend to be those short-term faculty led trips.
- [00:08:09.510]So you can see a picture here on the slide
- [00:08:12.090]of it looks like a safari vehicle.
- [00:08:14.070]Let's go on safari to Namibia,
- [00:08:16.500]get a little experience for the culture there
- [00:08:19.050]but still be able to do your summer internships.
- [00:08:21.210]So keep in mind you'll be hearing more about all of these
- [00:08:24.090]and reading about them in emails.
- [00:08:26.945]We also like to point out for parents and guardians
- [00:08:29.370]some of the tips for student success.
- [00:08:31.860]Know that the college as a whole
- [00:08:34.170]is very committed to your student success.
- [00:08:36.360]That we are really excited
- [00:08:37.950]about your student coming to the university
- [00:08:40.200]and we really have been very successful in the past
- [00:08:44.040]at helping them stay and succeed
- [00:08:45.780]with our high retention rate,
- [00:08:46.920]but we are here to put your student first.
- [00:08:49.560]But please make sure
- [00:08:50.820]that you stay in touch with your student
- [00:08:52.380]using whatever method works best for your family
- [00:08:55.530]so that your student knows that you're there.
- [00:08:57.960]And then reach out to our CASNR Cares team
- [00:09:00.000]if you have any questions or concerns.
- [00:09:02.010]I also like to say we have awesome advisors in CASNR,
- [00:09:06.150]and so trust our advisors
- [00:09:07.860]that they are asking the right questions
- [00:09:10.320]and that they will guide your students to their end goals.
- [00:09:14.730]We do have a lot of systems.
- [00:09:16.470]I've already mentioned MyRed and MyPlan
- [00:09:18.750]as part of the university system.
- [00:09:21.120]This is the MyUNL page that kind of highlights all of that.
- [00:09:24.840]You will have some instructions after NSE
- [00:09:28.020]when you're enrolled in classes
- [00:09:29.070]about how to use some of these.
- [00:09:30.930]MyRed should be familiar already
- [00:09:32.490]because you used that to pay your enrollment deposit
- [00:09:34.890]and sign up for NSE.
- [00:09:36.600]Canvas some of you may have used as your portal for classes
- [00:09:40.920]and so forth in high school.
- [00:09:42.210]Maybe you didn't,
- [00:09:43.740]but that is a great process for you as well.
- [00:09:46.110]Handshake is where you can learn about on-campus jobs.
- [00:09:49.590]Lots of different options,
- [00:09:50.760]so just kind of keep this picture and this
- [00:09:55.530]webpage in mind 'cause you can access everything from there.
- [00:10:02.430]MyPlan is something that I also mentioned earlier
- [00:10:04.920]but didn't give a lot of background on.
- [00:10:09.540]That is where you can schedule appointments
- [00:10:11.670]with instructors, advisors.
- [00:10:14.550]You can schedule an appointment
- [00:10:15.990]to get your resume worked on.
- [00:10:18.600]You can schedule an appointment for other things.
- [00:10:20.310]So MyPlan is that system.
- [00:10:21.960]You can see where that calendar invite is,
- [00:10:25.230]what openings that person has.
- [00:10:26.880]The really nice part about this is it used to be
- [00:10:29.280]we would send 50 emails back and forth
- [00:10:31.590]to get to the right place.
- [00:10:32.580]This will take you right there.
- [00:10:34.560]And I know you all know MyRed,
- [00:10:36.030]but that's also where your bills come through
- [00:10:38.040]and where you update your contact info
- [00:10:40.470]so that have the most updated information
- [00:10:42.840]and we can send those dean's list letters to you.
- [00:10:48.120]And we have a lot of cool events
- [00:10:49.740]that are coming up in the college
- [00:10:51.120]as the school year progresses.
- [00:10:52.950]August 17th is our This is CASNR event.
- [00:10:55.320]It's for freshman and transfer students,
- [00:10:57.390]any new students to the college.
- [00:10:59.370]This is all about getting to know each other,
- [00:11:01.980]gaining to know our faculty and staff.
- [00:11:04.080]You'll have time with your individual departments.
- [00:11:06.240]There is ice cream involved, I heard, and a free gift.
- [00:11:09.600]And then we do have an East Campus Welcome Back,
- [00:11:12.360]kind of like a club fair,
- [00:11:13.440]and that is on the first Thursday,
- [00:11:15.720]August 24th, of the month, or of the school year,
- [00:11:18.960]and you can learn about all the clubs and organizations,
- [00:11:21.390]get involved, sign up for a few things
- [00:11:24.240]and there's lots of free food that first couple weeks
- [00:11:26.430]as clubs get back together.
- [00:11:28.080]And then we have these other links
- [00:11:29.520]that could be useful for you
- [00:11:31.230]as you are tracking all the things
- [00:11:33.210]that are happening on campus.
- [00:11:35.160]We are so excited to have you
- [00:11:36.840]as part of the CASNR community,
- [00:11:38.580]and we are here to help with every next step.
- [00:11:40.920]Please let us know if you need anything.
