- [00:00:01.230]Hello, my name is Tracy Lungrin,
- [00:00:03.030]and I am here to talk with you
- [00:00:05.580]about supporting your student's career development.
- [00:00:09.120]At the University of Nebraska at Lincoln,
- [00:00:12.030]we wanna set your student up for jobs,
- [00:00:14.310]internships, and career success.
- [00:00:18.000]All right, the first thing we would like you to know
- [00:00:20.550]is that Handshake is the career platform
- [00:00:22.920]that we use here at UNL,
- [00:00:24.660]and it's the number one way for students to find jobs.
- [00:00:29.100]And when we say jobs, we need all jobs.
- [00:00:31.440]Take a look at this.
- [00:00:32.430]We have campus jobs on Handshake,
- [00:00:34.560]we have work study jobs, we have part-time jobs off-campus,
- [00:00:39.030]we have internships, co-ops, full-time jobs,
- [00:00:42.990]and even volunteer service opportunities.
- [00:00:47.460]Handshake has over 20,000 employers
- [00:00:52.770]inside the platform, 100% of Fortune 500.
- [00:00:56.220]There were 100,000 plus opportunities
- [00:00:58.770]posted last year alone.
- [00:01:01.320]23,000 of those were internships,
- [00:01:04.320]and 330 plus were on-campus jobs here at UNL.
- [00:01:09.120]If a student wants to claim their Handshake,
- [00:01:11.850]they can go right to this link,
- [00:01:15.570]but we'll talk a little bit about when the right time
- [00:01:18.750]for the student to claim their Handshake is.
- [00:01:22.200]All right, we also wanna share
- [00:01:24.840]a little bit about our career fairs.
- [00:01:27.420]We say career fairs equals career connections.
- [00:01:31.770]For the 2022-23 year,
- [00:01:34.830]we had 640 employers hosted at UNL career fairs and events,
- [00:01:40.320]which were approximately about 20 events
- [00:01:44.400]throughout the year.
- [00:01:46.950]We had over 5,000, well over,
- [00:01:49.200]almost 6,000 students attend these career fairs and events.
- [00:01:53.400]And we have a couple of different styles I'll talk through.
- [00:01:57.960]If you wanna learn more about the events
- [00:02:00.060]or see the events that are coming for next year,
- [00:02:03.090]you can go to this link or you can find that pretty easily
- [00:02:07.500]on the front page of our website, careers.unl.edu.
- [00:02:12.180]All right, last year we rolled out a new type of event
- [00:02:18.120]that really focused on learning and connecting for students,
- [00:02:22.020]we called them the niche industry events.
- [00:02:24.720]These events really focused on providing
- [00:02:27.870]kind of a casual environment
- [00:02:29.790]where we brought in community members,
- [00:02:32.820]employers, alumni to come in and talk
- [00:02:36.120]with our students in various formats,
- [00:02:38.940]panel discussions, group discussions,
- [00:02:41.010]and information tables.
- [00:02:43.230]We had last year just a few ideas or a few examples
- [00:02:47.790]of the types of industries that we brought in.
- [00:02:50.940]We did one on policy, government, and law.
- [00:02:53.760]We did one on human services, nonprofit,
- [00:02:55.950]and social justice careers.
- [00:02:57.990]We did one on environment and natural resources careers,
- [00:03:01.710]science, research, and development careers,
- [00:03:04.830]and even a few more.
- [00:03:06.960]We'll be also rolling out our,
- [00:03:13.080]pardon me, our events for next year very soon this summer.
- [00:03:19.470]We also want you to know about academic advisors,
- [00:03:22.530]and really the difference
- [00:03:23.610]between academic advisors and career coaches
- [00:03:26.970]'cause I think sometimes that can be confusing.
- [00:03:30.060]An academic advisor is someone who helps students
- [00:03:33.060]enroll for classes, navigate their degree requirements,
- [00:03:37.620]and connect students to campus resources.
- [00:03:40.890]A career coach has a little different role on campus,
- [00:03:45.540]they help students explore majors
- [00:03:47.790]and specific career options,
- [00:03:50.730]especially if a student maybe has a major,
- [00:03:52.920]but isn't sure what they want to do with it
- [00:03:55.020]or if they're just really unsure about what they wanna do,
- [00:03:59.040]a career coach is a great place to start.
- [00:04:01.890]Career coaches also help students
- [00:04:03.630]plan ways to gain experience and build skills,
- [00:04:09.540]and they also help prepare students
- [00:04:12.450]to apply for opportunities.
- [00:04:15.300]I'll be more specific about some of the ways
- [00:04:18.000]that they do that in the next slide.
- [00:04:21.720]Personalized career guidance
- [00:04:23.250]is absolutely available here at UNL.
- [00:04:25.920]I think it's one of our top strengths
- [00:04:28.380]in supporting your student's career development
- [00:04:31.650]with student specifically with gaining experience.
- [00:04:36.150]Career coaches have a great plethora of insight
- [00:04:39.660]for students on the many different ways
- [00:04:42.270]that they can gain experience.
- [00:04:45.420]It's not only through internships,
- [00:04:47.400]it might be through a research opportunity,
- [00:04:51.060]through jobs, through volunteer,
- [00:04:54.510]through leadership, and more.
- [00:04:56.850]Especially, if a student has a specific career area
- [00:05:01.050]that they wanna go into,
- [00:05:02.670]the model that we have for career coaches
- [00:05:04.950]is that they've worked with a lot of students
- [00:05:07.530]and the faculty in these areas
- [00:05:10.110]so they have a lot of knowledge to pass on to students
- [00:05:14.040]on the opportunities that they have
- [00:05:15.660]to gain experience and become career ready.
- [00:05:18.870]In addition to that, career coaches can really help students
- [00:05:22.680]prepare and apply for opportunities.
- [00:05:25.950]So, when a student is ready to apply for an internship,
- [00:05:29.100]or ready to apply for a job, or graduate school,
- [00:05:32.640]I hope that they're meeting with their career coach
- [00:05:35.070]and having them help them write,
- [00:05:37.337]help them look at and perfect, if you will,
- [00:05:41.040]their bullet points on their resume,
- [00:05:43.290]or help them write a really strong cover letter
- [00:05:46.740]and really describe how they've gained experience,
- [00:05:50.640]this type of skills that they have,
- [00:05:52.740]and why they're ready for this next opportunity.
- [00:05:55.980]That's a really fun part of our job as career coaches
- [00:05:59.280]is to help students frame their experience
- [00:06:01.980]and really sell and promote themselves.
- [00:06:04.470]And then, finally your students
- [00:06:06.930]are trying to break into fields that interest them,
- [00:06:09.510]and that can be challenging.
- [00:06:11.640]You really need some strategy in that
- [00:06:13.680]and you need help and support in making connections,
- [00:06:17.460]so that's another thing that career coaches
- [00:06:19.350]help students do.
- [00:06:22.260]We have a pretty large career services community
- [00:06:25.860]on our campus.
- [00:06:26.880]This is also on our website.
- [00:06:29.130]So, if you went to career team
- [00:06:31.380]and you knew that your student,
- [00:06:32.970]let's say major was in the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:06:36.360]you would go here, you could click on there,
- [00:06:39.120]and that career team will surface
- [00:06:41.490]and all the coaches will be there.
- [00:06:43.470]You can make appointments with coaches,
- [00:06:45.150]you can read about their bios,
- [00:06:47.250]you could see where they're located.
- [00:06:49.350]And so, it's really a helpful tool
- [00:06:51.720]on help students figure out who their career coach is,
- [00:06:56.370]where they're located,
- [00:06:58.080]and also how to make an appointment
- [00:07:01.200]with a career coach in their particular area.
- [00:07:05.820]Oh, I should say if a student is unsure of where to go,
- [00:07:10.830]University Career Services is our centralized unit,
- [00:07:14.520]and they can help guide students
- [00:07:17.130]to the the correct career office.
- [00:07:22.920]All right, really quickly,
- [00:07:24.750]we have some great career resources
- [00:07:27.090]for students on our DIY page.
- [00:07:31.470]Here's our website.
- [00:07:32.520]Again, if they go to career resources DIY,
- [00:07:36.150]there's a lot of things that students
- [00:07:37.590]can get prepared started on.
- [00:07:40.740]They can start on resumes
- [00:07:42.030]with these kinds of guides that we have,
- [00:07:44.130]they can even take an assessment on their own.
- [00:07:47.910]We have a headshot station that they can come in and use.
- [00:07:50.850]There's all kinds of things.
- [00:07:52.560]If they got really familiar with those,
- [00:07:54.360]they would know how to leverage
- [00:07:57.240]and take advantage of these resources
- [00:08:00.690]before they got to campus.
- [00:08:03.450]We would also love for parents and students
- [00:08:06.750]to follow up career services on social media.
- [00:08:09.960]A few reasons for that is we give awesome little tidbits
- [00:08:14.280]every single day we're breaking up
- [00:08:17.280]great career information for students,
- [00:08:19.380]reminding them the best way to pitch themselves.
- [00:08:23.730]Hey, we have one on scams,
- [00:08:26.100]don't give information to people
- [00:08:31.140]that may be asking for this or that.
- [00:08:33.901]We have lots of stories about students
- [00:08:38.040]that have gained an internship and what that means.
- [00:08:41.910]And so, just hearing other students' career stories
- [00:08:44.910]is a right way to learn about opportunities.
- [00:08:48.360]The other thing that we're gonna be doing
- [00:08:49.740]is promoting our events.
- [00:08:51.060]So, I think that's the best way to stay connected to us
- [00:08:56.430]is if you're following us on social media,
- [00:08:58.590]we're gonna be telling you, "Hey,
- [00:09:00.240]this event is coming in a few days,
- [00:09:03.270]or in a month, or in a week,
- [00:09:04.980]so it'd be great for you to do that."
- [00:09:07.020]We have an Instagram account,
- [00:09:08.160]we have a TikTok, we have Twitter, and we have Facebook.
- [00:09:13.260]All right, I'm really excited to talk about this.
- [00:09:15.870]This is new for us.
- [00:09:17.400]We are rolling out the Husker Tuition Scholarship Challenge.
- [00:09:21.300]And if you wanna learn more, this is the website to go.
- [00:09:25.470]But essentially, we really wanna motivate students
- [00:09:27.960]to take more ownership and initiative
- [00:09:30.690]in their career development and career readiness.
- [00:09:33.990]We have come up with a list of tasks
- [00:09:37.350]for students to complete
- [00:09:40.200]that will help advance their career
- [00:09:43.230]or professional career development.
- [00:09:45.900]As the students do those,
- [00:09:47.850]they can fill out the form once they've completed that task
- [00:09:51.780]and those forms will then enter them into win prizes.
- [00:09:55.560]We will do prizes, monthly prizes,
- [00:09:57.930]and then obviously the grand prize
- [00:10:00.360]is if the student has completed all of the required tasks
- [00:10:04.470]they will get entered to win
- [00:10:06.900]a semester's tuition,
- [00:10:10.020]free tuition for the following semester.
- [00:10:13.050]So, go here to learn more about the challenge,
- [00:10:15.540]we'll also be talking more about this
- [00:10:18.300]if and when you attend the orientation day.
- [00:10:24.360]All right, finally this is the last slide.
- [00:10:27.930]We just wanna go over the four action steps
- [00:10:31.410]from today's presentation,
- [00:10:34.380]and the QR code will take you to our page
- [00:10:38.100]that will also have this listed.
- [00:10:40.320]A student really needs to finish enrolling for classes,
- [00:10:43.770]that will then trigger them into the UNL system.
- [00:10:47.880]And then, once that happens,
- [00:10:49.380]they are able to log in and claim their Handshake account.
- [00:10:54.600]Three, connect to career resources
- [00:10:57.300]and find that career coach
- [00:11:00.060]so you can start meeting with them very regularly,
- [00:11:04.050]early, and often.
- [00:11:05.310]And four, follow University Career Services
- [00:11:08.070]on social media to stay connected.
- [00:11:10.800]Thank you so much.
- [00:11:12.390]We're so excited you're here,
- [00:11:14.070]and we're excited to support your student
- [00:11:16.980]in their career development at UNL.
