- [00:00:02.100]Hi, my name is Kristy Saunders,
- [00:00:03.870]and I am the Associate Director of Husker Hub.
- [00:00:06.780]And for those of you that have not used our services yet,
- [00:00:09.420]we are the one-stop shop on campus
- [00:00:11.490]where students and parents can go
- [00:00:12.990]to get their questions answered
- [00:00:14.340]regarding course registration,
- [00:00:16.230]academic transcripts, student billing,
- [00:00:18.780]and, of course, scholarships and financial aid.
- [00:00:21.630]We like to say that we are where students go
- [00:00:23.760]to handle the business side of being a Husker
- [00:00:25.890]so they can focus on academics and the fun part of college.
- [00:00:31.290]So, today, I'm going to cover a few topics.
- [00:00:34.350]We have a lot to talk about
- [00:00:36.480]with the things that we cover as our office,
- [00:00:38.100]as you can imagine.
- [00:00:39.240]So, I wanted to break it down to the top five things
- [00:00:42.450]that you need to know right now.
- [00:00:44.820]So, we're going to chat a bit about student billing.
- [00:00:47.550]When is the student going to actually receive their bill,
- [00:00:50.880]ways that they can pay,
- [00:00:52.260]and, of course, when is that first bill due?
- [00:00:55.290]Two, we're gonna chat about release of funds.
- [00:00:57.600]If just, say, that you have financial aid
- [00:00:59.670]or you were awarded a scholarship,
- [00:01:01.620]I'll chat with you about when those should disperse
- [00:01:04.470]and pay towards that bill
- [00:01:05.880]so you know when to expect to see the exact amount
- [00:01:08.910]that you should have to pay.
- [00:01:10.920]Number three, financial aid common mistakes,
- [00:01:13.830]and, of course, things that might delay disbursement.
- [00:01:16.560]We wanna make sure
- [00:01:17.400]that your aid disperses in a timely manner
- [00:01:19.710]so that way you know exactly what you might have to pay.
- [00:01:23.070]And then, if you are somebody who has people in your life
- [00:01:26.220]that would like to support you with things
- [00:01:28.470]such as financial aid or your student bill,
- [00:01:30.990]how to keep your support system in the know.
- [00:01:33.360]I'll tell you about how we communicate
- [00:01:35.310]with you as a student,
- [00:01:36.720]how to give parents or other support network folks
- [00:01:40.320]guest access and authorized payer
- [00:01:42.750]if they are hoping to help you pay your bill.
- [00:01:45.420]And of course, other resources
- [00:01:47.550]so that way you can advocate for yourself
- [00:01:49.440]and get answers to your questions at any time of the day,
- [00:01:52.380]even if just, say, the university is not open.
- [00:01:56.790]So, to get started, we're gonna chat about student billing.
- [00:01:59.880]So, one of the main questions we get this time of year
- [00:02:02.430]is when will we see this first bill?
- [00:02:05.790]You're gonna notice as you, as the student,
- [00:02:08.880]register for classes,
- [00:02:10.050]you're gonna see some charges
- [00:02:11.580]start to populate on your MyRED.
- [00:02:14.040]However, you're not going to see the official bill
- [00:02:17.760]until August 25th.
- [00:02:20.040]So, on August 25th,
- [00:02:21.420]you'll receive a email to your Huskers email
- [00:02:24.390]letting you know that that bill is available to view.
- [00:02:27.600]We actually will send that monthly billing statement
- [00:02:31.590]each month that you have charges
- [00:02:33.900]around the 25th each time.
- [00:02:35.910]So, if you just keep that number in your brain, the 25th,
- [00:02:39.510]you should always be aware
- [00:02:40.770]of when that bill should be available to you.
- [00:02:43.890]Like I mentioned, notifications are only sent
- [00:02:46.650]to the student's Husker email address.
- [00:02:48.840]So, if you have anyone in your support network
- [00:02:50.670]that is also hoping to help you with your bill,
- [00:02:53.070]I always tell them set a reminder in your phone
- [00:02:55.770]saying August 25th that bill should be available to view.
- [00:02:59.430]So, that way you can log in
- [00:03:00.960]to that authorized payer portal
- [00:03:02.940]or just check in with your student
- [00:03:04.500]to say, "Hey, are there any charges?
- [00:03:06.090]Do you need help?"
- [00:03:08.040]Now, you get the bill on August 25th,
- [00:03:10.410]but it is not due until September 12th.
- [00:03:13.560]So, that gives you a little bit of time
- [00:03:15.570]to troubleshoot financial aid if it hasn't dispersed yet
- [00:03:18.810]or, of course, just make plans for payment.
- [00:03:22.530]The bill will always be due on the 12th of each month
- [00:03:26.070]that you have a balance.
- [00:03:27.510]So, once again, for those that are in the support network,
- [00:03:31.050]just remember 25th of each month
- [00:03:33.120]and the 12th of each month, and you should be good to go
- [00:03:36.090]to know when things are happening for your student.
- [00:03:40.200]Next, for paying the student bill.
- [00:03:42.480]You're gonna go directly into your MyRED
- [00:03:44.460]where you can make a payment online
- [00:03:46.740]just through this portal.
- [00:03:48.270]You're going to see a couple of numbers here.
- [00:03:50.760]I wanted to point out two things
- [00:03:52.710]since this tends to confuse folks.
- [00:03:54.690]There's current balance as well as payment due.
- [00:03:57.780]So, the current balance
- [00:03:58.920]are all of your current charges on your account.
- [00:04:02.280]The payment due is the amount that you must pay
- [00:04:05.310]on our next bill.
- [00:04:06.480]So, for instance, for this student,
- [00:04:08.610]they owe 97.25 on April 12th.
- [00:04:11.730]However, their current balance is much larger than that.
- [00:04:15.060]So, if the student is to hit that Pay Bill button,
- [00:04:18.180]they only need to pay 97.25 right now
- [00:04:21.270]in order to remain current on their bill.
- [00:04:23.970]The remainder of what is due
- [00:04:25.830]won't be due until the next bill of May 12th.
- [00:04:30.180]So, sometimes folks get confused on that,
- [00:04:32.310]but, of course, if you have any questions about your bill
- [00:04:34.920]or what's on it, you can always chat with us.
- [00:04:40.020]You have a lot of different options of how to pay the bill,
- [00:04:42.810]so, but not all of them are created equal.
- [00:04:46.050]So, we definitely recommend using the online payment options
- [00:04:49.620]since they're available 24/7,
- [00:04:51.420]you don't need to come in-person to do that,
- [00:04:53.730]and also you don't need to rely on the postal service
- [00:04:56.250]to send us a check, or what have you.
- [00:04:59.310]If you use an online check, there are no additional fees,
- [00:05:02.640]whatever you input as your payment
- [00:05:04.470]is the total amount you will pay.
- [00:05:06.600]If you use a credit or debit card,
- [00:05:08.760]there is a non-refundable 2.75% service fee.
- [00:05:13.260]So, we tell folks to use that
- [00:05:15.120]only if they absolutely have to,
- [00:05:17.280]so that way you don't have
- [00:05:18.510]to have any other additional costs.
- [00:05:21.150]Some of the other payment options
- [00:05:22.740]that we, of course, will take would be personal check
- [00:05:25.320]if you want to come drop it off in-person or mail it.
- [00:05:28.560]You also can initiate a payment
- [00:05:30.090]with your 529 provider to send to us as well.
- [00:05:33.450]Bank bill pay, money order, cashier's check,
- [00:05:36.420]and, of course, foreign currency payments.
- [00:05:41.670]If you would like to split your bill into three payments,
- [00:05:44.430]you actually can sign up
- [00:05:45.420]for what's called the Husker Payment Plan.
- [00:05:47.370]Those students can register for the plan in their MyRED
- [00:05:49.800]and you must register each semester
- [00:05:51.930]you wish to use the plan.
- [00:05:54.000]The plan allows for you to pay a third of your bill
- [00:05:56.550]when you open the Husker Payment Plan
- [00:05:58.530]and then the next two payments are withdrawn automatically
- [00:06:01.560]from the bank account you provide
- [00:06:03.210]around the 12th of each the next two months.
- [00:06:05.970]So, for instance, if you were registering for this fall,
- [00:06:09.060]you would open the plan and pay a third,
- [00:06:12.090]and then the next two payments
- [00:06:13.140]would be on October 12th and November 12th.
- [00:06:16.230]The Husker Payment Plan
- [00:06:17.310]will open for registration on August 25th,
- [00:06:19.770]which is the same date the bill is available to view,
- [00:06:22.200]and will close for registration on September 12th,
- [00:06:24.960]the bill due date.
- [00:06:26.370]If you try to open it after September 12th,
- [00:06:28.740]unfortunately it is no longer an option.
- [00:06:31.410]So, it's really important
- [00:06:32.760]that if you want to use the payment plan
- [00:06:34.620]that you registered during that window.
- [00:06:39.630]Disbursement dates.
- [00:06:40.920]So, if you have financial aid or a scholarship,
- [00:06:43.590]the first round of disbursement
- [00:06:44.790]will occur approximately one week
- [00:06:46.680]before the start of each semester.
- [00:06:48.900]That way, hopefully you should have your financial aid
- [00:06:51.360]applied to your bill
- [00:06:52.380]before you get that billing notification.
- [00:06:55.230]So, the financial aid will first go
- [00:06:56.700]towards covering direct expenses,
- [00:06:58.590]so things such as tuition, fees, housing, and meals
- [00:07:01.890]on the student bill in MyRED.
- [00:07:03.630]If just say the amount that you have in financial aid
- [00:07:06.510]and scholarship exceeds the total amount
- [00:07:08.850]that you are billed,
- [00:07:09.930]then you should receive a refund.
- [00:07:12.150]If you have a refund coming to you,
- [00:07:14.070]we strongly recommend that you enroll in direct deposit
- [00:07:17.820]since that is the most secure
- [00:07:19.770]and the quickest delivery method
- [00:07:21.450]of you getting that refunded money.
- [00:07:23.790]If you do not enroll in direct deposit,
- [00:07:26.340]we have to cut a check and mail it,
- [00:07:28.650]which, of course, takes much longer.
- [00:07:30.960]And also, there's always the opportunity
- [00:07:32.940]where the check might get lost in the mail,
- [00:07:35.280]which is always heartbreaking when it happens
- [00:07:37.530]and just delays it further.
- [00:07:39.330]So, if you have a bank account,
- [00:07:41.070]I strongly recommend enrolling in direct deposit
- [00:07:44.040]to avoid that extra layer of worry for you each semester.
- [00:07:50.940]So, financial aid,
- [00:07:52.050]some of the common things we see happen
- [00:07:54.180]that might delay disbursement or just common mistakes,
- [00:07:57.150]number one is not filing your FAFSA.
- [00:08:00.090]Our priority deadline is June 1st,
- [00:08:02.220]so if you were watching this prior to that deadline,
- [00:08:04.770]you have time.
- [00:08:05.910]And if you've missed it, don't fret,
- [00:08:07.890]you can still absolutely file your FAFSA
- [00:08:10.590]and still be eligible for federal financial aid.
- [00:08:14.040]If you want some more help to pay your bill
- [00:08:16.320]or even just want the safety net of student loans,
- [00:08:19.140]that is absolutely one of the best things you can do
- [00:08:21.930]to make sure you have options.
- [00:08:24.330]Next would be students not understanding
- [00:08:27.180]or looking at their enrollment requirements.
- [00:08:29.940]So, for most scholarships and aid,
- [00:08:32.520]there are minimum credits needed
- [00:08:34.710]for disbursement and renewal.
- [00:08:36.780]So, if you received a scholarship,
- [00:08:38.490]make sure that you look at that eligibility criteria
- [00:08:41.700]that was provided to you in the notification.
- [00:08:44.310]And I always say just bookmark it
- [00:08:46.080]to make sure you never lose it.
- [00:08:47.760]But mostly, just keep in mind
- [00:08:49.770]that for most federal and state aid,
- [00:08:51.690]it requires at least 12 credit hours in order to disperse,
- [00:08:55.530]so keep that in mind when you're choosing your classes.
- [00:08:59.250]And one of the big ones is missing MyRED checklist items.
- [00:09:02.850]There are many checklists that will prevent us
- [00:09:05.220]from either awarding you aid
- [00:09:07.080]or else not being able to disperse it
- [00:09:09.120]until those checklists are completed.
- [00:09:11.490]So, make sure that you log into your MyRED
- [00:09:13.770]and check your checklists often
- [00:09:16.410]and make sure they are complete
- [00:09:17.820]so that way we can get your aid
- [00:09:19.290]to you as quickly as possible.
- [00:09:22.830]The most common missing checklist item we see
- [00:09:25.230]are for students who are planning to take out loans.
- [00:09:27.930]If you are accepting student loans in your MyRED portal,
- [00:09:31.110]there are two checklist items you have to complete
- [00:09:33.720]in order for them to disperse.
- [00:09:35.430]One is called Federal Entrance Counseling
- [00:09:37.733]and the other is the Master Promissory Note,
- [00:09:40.620]commonly referred to as MPN.
- [00:09:43.080]In order to complete these,
- [00:09:44.340]you're gonna want to go
- [00:09:45.180]to studentaid.gov/entrance-counseling
- [00:09:49.110]or student aid.gov/mpn.
- [00:09:51.900]You can see on this website here with the two black arrows
- [00:09:56.460]under Loans and Grants on this website
- [00:09:58.410]you can complete those both here.
- [00:10:00.330]They both take about 30 minutes to complete,
- [00:10:02.760]so just keep that in mind.
- [00:10:05.250]For parents, if you are hoping
- [00:10:06.780]to take out a parent PLUS loan
- [00:10:08.910]to help pay your student's education,
- [00:10:12.000]you actually will have a separate loan application
- [00:10:15.390]you must complete at studentaid.gov as well.
- [00:10:18.180]To complete the loan,
- [00:10:19.890]you're going to go to the same spot, studentaid.gov,
- [00:10:22.200]under Loans and Grants.
- [00:10:23.610]You can go to this PLUS Loans, Grad PLUS, and Parent PLUS
- [00:10:27.060]and then also hear this Master Promissory Note, MPN.
- [00:10:32.310]If you want to have this loan in time for the bill due date
- [00:10:34.860]of September 12th, we recommend starting this process
- [00:10:37.590]by early August.
- [00:10:39.030]However, if you're not sure if you need it yet,
- [00:10:41.100]you are welcome to complete this at any time
- [00:10:43.140]during the academic year.
- [00:10:44.700]So, if just say you decide to wait,
- [00:10:46.350]that is totally fine, we can absolutely help.
- [00:10:50.160]So, now how to keep your support system in the know?
- [00:10:52.740]If you are lucky enough to have family and friends
- [00:10:55.530]that are wanting to help you in college,
- [00:10:57.660]just make sure that you were aware of how we communicate
- [00:11:01.140]and what you need to do in order to get them access.
- [00:11:04.170]So, number one, all official UNL communications
- [00:11:06.930]are sent to the student's Huskers email address,
- [00:11:10.290]and that includes bill notifications.
- [00:11:12.150]Those can be sent to the student only.
- [00:11:14.940]If you would like to have parents or other supports
- [00:11:17.370]to be granted access, you actually have to grant them access
- [00:11:21.330]under your Profile here, under Managed Guest Users.
- [00:11:25.560]You can give them access to information
- [00:11:27.840]such as financial aid or other information
- [00:11:30.030]commonly covered by FERPA
- [00:11:32.160]in order to allow them to get information on your behalf.
- [00:11:36.030]The other thing you're gonna want to do
- [00:11:37.680]is give authorized payer access
- [00:11:39.720]if they are hoping to help pay for your bill.
- [00:11:42.300]And we actually do have a video
- [00:11:45.870]that covers both those topics
- [00:11:47.940]under their next topic of resources.
- [00:11:50.130]So, if you want step-by-step instructional videos
- [00:11:52.920]on how to do a lot of the processes that we handle,
- [00:11:56.310]we have something called Husker Hub Explains.
- [00:11:58.680]You can see the URL right up here,
- [00:12:01.140]where we actually talk about how to add an authorized payer,
- [00:12:03.900]how to grant guest access,
- [00:12:05.790]and, of course, just some other things
- [00:12:07.350]like how to complete the MPN, entrance counseling,
- [00:12:10.290]among a lot of other of our processes
- [00:12:12.510]that students oftentimes
- [00:12:14.160]would love to have more guidance on.
- [00:12:16.500]So, feel free to click through here,
- [00:12:18.090]and if there's anything that you wish
- [00:12:19.740]that we covered in these videos,
- [00:12:21.300]let us know, we add new videos every month
- [00:12:24.570]so let us know and we're happy to add it to our repertoire.
- [00:12:29.070]And so, with that,
- [00:12:30.030]I will leave you with our contact information.
- [00:12:32.400]You are welcome to come see us anytime
- [00:12:34.740]between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday,
- [00:12:37.860]and we're happy to answer any questions you may have.
- [00:12:40.440]Welcome to UNL, we are so glad to have you,
- [00:12:43.110]and enjoy your NSE.
