- [00:00:05.130]Hi, welcome to the "Teaching World Language
- [00:00:07.890]With Technology" podcast.
- [00:00:10.200]I'm Chrystal Liu, I'm the world language specialist
- [00:00:12.900]at Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:16.297]And I'm Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:17.130]I'm a professor of education
- [00:00:18.630]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:20.880]and I do a lot of my work in technology integration.
- [00:00:24.810]Yeah. Today we're going to talk about rubrics.
- [00:00:28.680]You know, as we're language teachers,
- [00:00:30.210]we need rubrics to grade a lot of things.
- [00:00:32.910]So it's our, something really big, really important.
- [00:00:37.110]So that's why we have this time to focus on rubric today.
- [00:00:41.400]First we want to talk about Quick Rubric.
- [00:00:44.610]Yes, so I've never done Quick Rubric,
- [00:00:46.590]so I'm having a first time experience.
- [00:00:48.660]I do use rubrics quite often.
- [00:00:51.210]And what I love about Quick Rubric
- [00:00:52.920]is you can create a rubric without an account.
- [00:00:54.990]You can create an account in Rubric,
- [00:00:56.904]and we recommend that you do.
- [00:00:58.440]Create a free account simply because
- [00:01:00.660]that allows you to save things
- [00:01:02.580]but you can create it without.
- [00:01:05.130]Yeah, a Quick Rubric, you have like template,
- [00:01:09.270]so you can just create,
- [00:01:12.000]put everything you need in your rubric,
- [00:01:14.790]the criterias, the descriptions of each level,
- [00:01:18.748]and then your grades in.
- [00:01:21.771]So you have a title,
- [00:01:24.290]in this case I called it "Verbal Expression."
- [00:01:27.330]And then you can do a more thorough description.
- [00:01:30.300]And then you have the criteria, the topic.
- [00:01:33.210]Let's say one is fluency.
- [00:01:36.360]And what would be a second one would be, mm?
- [00:01:40.810]Grammatic or grammus or?
- [00:01:43.830]Gramma, grammar, okay.
- [00:01:46.410]And then we'll say body language, right?
- [00:01:52.020]The ability to look at the person you're talking about,
- [00:01:56.220]and talking to, and all of that.
- [00:01:58.380]And we're just doing it.
- [00:01:59.280]And of course here you can write descriptions.
- [00:02:02.224]Usually when we write rubrics,
- [00:02:04.110]do you start from proficient and work your way down?
- [00:02:06.660]How do you usually think about rubrics?
- [00:02:09.703]I actually like to start in the middle,
- [00:02:13.350]emerging. Okay.
- [00:02:14.183]That's why like students need to be here and after,
- [00:02:19.860]you know, after this whole unit of learning
- [00:02:22.560]or this two weeks of learning, I want students to be here.
- [00:02:25.650]So I start with their criteria.
- [00:02:28.350]I mean, this is a cutting line.
- [00:02:30.360]So if we are here, and we are good,
- [00:02:33.000]and then I go to beginning, and then go to proficient.
- [00:02:37.080]Yes. And that's one way.
- [00:02:38.250]But I did want to mention, as I was playing with this,
- [00:02:41.010]I saw that you can actually change the categories,
- [00:02:43.770]and also add categories.
- [00:02:45.150]So I can add a column
- [00:02:46.440]and suddenly I have something below beginning,
- [00:02:50.790]and usually not advisable, but sometimes you do use that.
- [00:02:55.710]And I also have the ability to add more categories
- [00:02:59.730]so this can become more complicated.
- [00:03:02.490]So it's very versatile.
- [00:03:04.380]It's very quick.
- [00:03:05.213]You saw in two clicks we were in
- [00:03:06.810]and we were already making a rubric.
- [00:03:08.640]And you can be done.
- [00:03:09.570]What can you do once you are done making a rubric?
- [00:03:12.958]Oh, oh.
- [00:03:13.860]Before we move on, I want to mention about sometimes,
- [00:03:17.340]you know, for a different task, we have different grades.
- [00:03:20.160]So on the right top corner.
- [00:03:24.048]So you find their maximum score and a minimum score,
- [00:03:28.050]this will help you to grade.
- [00:03:29.700]Yeah. So I'm going to have 1200 points.
- [00:03:32.100]Wow. (laughing)
- [00:03:32.933]I like, I like a lot of points.
- [00:03:34.350]I think it makes everybody happy.
- [00:03:36.240]So, but that's just a personal choice of course.
- [00:03:41.250]And so you can create the minimum and maximum score
- [00:03:44.760]or say I don't want to score.
- [00:03:46.680]This is really important.
- [00:03:47.970]Often, especially as we're doing this
- [00:03:51.720]as formative assessment,
- [00:03:53.400]the numbers are not really as important as the descriptors.
- [00:03:58.050]And so we can take the points off
- [00:03:59.790]and say that we would like to have it just as it is.
- [00:04:05.790]So lots of options there.
- [00:04:07.770]All right.
- [00:04:08.603]After that we save the rubric.
- [00:04:10.440]It will bring up-
- [00:04:13.050]Yeah.
- [00:04:13.883]So if I try to save, I don't have an account
- [00:04:16.020]so it'll prompt you to get an account.
- [00:04:18.180]But if I don't want to have an account
- [00:04:20.370]what else can I do?
- [00:04:22.066]You need to, you need to save it to be able to print.
- [00:04:27.300]Otherwise the other choices.
- [00:04:29.430]Do not, here.
- [00:04:30.664]So once you have an account,
- [00:04:32.790]you can actually save it as a pdf,
- [00:04:35.490]download it to your, and then download it,
- [00:04:38.610]and use it that way.
- [00:04:39.630]You can actually print it
- [00:04:40.830]if you want to use it printed.
- [00:04:42.803]I just thought about one thing
- [00:04:45.450]that can be incredibly powerful,
- [00:04:47.730]especially with Quick Rubric
- [00:04:49.080]and that is students can individually
- [00:04:51.210]or in small groups create their own rubrics.
- [00:04:53.820]So they have to think about what are their criteria
- [00:04:57.600]and what would be acceptable performance.
- [00:05:00.480]And that creates in them more self-regulated learners.
- [00:05:05.130]Yeah. That's very powerful.
- [00:05:07.200]And so they know what they want to focus on.
- [00:05:09.960]Mm hmm. And they can see if they match up.
- [00:05:13.830]So it's another powerful way to increase their investment
- [00:05:19.290]in their own education, their self-regulation,
- [00:05:21.900]and really their voice in what's important to them.
- [00:05:25.680]So this is Quick Rubric.
- [00:05:27.150]As we said, it's very quick.
- [00:05:29.340]It has a few categories,
- [00:05:31.230]but really it has very limited support for you as a teacher.
- [00:05:36.060]If you know what you want to grade on, this is great.
- [00:05:38.700]If you have more questions or you want more supports,
- [00:05:40.830]we're going to the next one.
- [00:05:42.150]And the next one is?
- [00:05:43.410]RubiStar. All right.
- [00:05:44.730]So the RubiStar actually give you,
- [00:05:47.118]we can see, we can create a rubric without creating account,
- [00:05:52.500]and you can also download without creating an account.
- [00:05:55.650]This is really nice. Okay.
- [00:05:57.690]And also it has different options.
- [00:06:00.090]We can see oral projects.
- [00:06:01.852]I will go, okay, I'm going to Oral Project.
- [00:06:05.850]So when you click on it,
- [00:06:08.610]you can see there are different.
- [00:06:14.520]So I'm trying to create one for telling a story.
- [00:06:17.310]I think the, in word language,
- [00:06:18.810]telling a story is one of those options.
- [00:06:21.030]So I will quickly make an account,
- [00:06:23.880]and I don't know, I'm not making an account,
- [00:06:25.890]I'm just giving it the project a name.
- [00:06:28.590]So Story Telling, "About my Family,"
- [00:06:35.700]if I could spell that would be helpful.
- [00:06:39.891]You can see, very, very easy.
- [00:06:41.910]And now what can I do?
- [00:06:43.830]Now you want to pick the category.
- [00:06:47.560]Okay. If you pick the category,
- [00:06:49.680]it will show up.
- [00:06:50.880]All right.
- [00:06:51.713]So let's talk about here there are, it's pre-populated.
- [00:06:55.380]So I chose characters, right?
- [00:06:57.000]All stories need characters.
- [00:06:58.470]Here it is.
- [00:06:59.670]And it automatically populates what the expectations are.
- [00:07:05.400]And of course, does not mean
- [00:07:07.110]as a teacher that I have to do that,
- [00:07:08.850]but it gives me a, at least a starting point.
- [00:07:11.070]Yeah, and then you can adapt it
- [00:07:12.690]to your own project and change the direction,
- [00:07:15.570]I mean descriptions and also the grade.
- [00:07:18.690]If you want like you 100 for proficient,
- [00:07:22.747]you want, you know, okay, 300, you can do whatever you want.
- [00:07:26.340]175 and 50 and 25.
- [00:07:34.170]That's a different way.
- [00:07:35.190]It's basically the same score.
- [00:07:36.930]It's the same scale, but you can create more.
- [00:07:39.120]Can you add rows?
- [00:07:40.533]You can add rows, but not columns.
- [00:07:44.400]Oh, okay.
- [00:07:45.480]So you can add rows but not columns.
- [00:07:47.160]That's important to know.
- [00:07:48.600]All right, let's talk about setting.
- [00:07:52.230]Okay.
- [00:07:53.063]Lots of vivid descriptive words are used
- [00:07:55.140]to tell the audience about where the story takes place.
- [00:07:57.660]Great.
- [00:07:58.493]So you can see how quickly the difference
- [00:08:00.090]between this and Quick Rubric
- [00:08:02.610]is it's pre-populated with content-specific ideas.
- [00:08:07.440]So it makes your life potentially easier.
- [00:08:09.810]Although again, as teacher, always edit,
- [00:08:12.630]always make sure (Chrystal laughs)
- [00:08:13.463]it actually feeds what you want.
- [00:08:14.730]Because it may be a little bit of, or a lot of,
- [00:08:17.910]especially when you're talking about word language.
- [00:08:20.820]And when we talk about more advanced students
- [00:08:23.070]and we talk about using the language to teach the language
- [00:08:25.770]we may actually want to create these rubrics
- [00:08:29.100]in the target language. In target language, yes.
- [00:08:31.590]And also we want to, you know, on different levels,
- [00:08:34.230]we want to include proficiency,
- [00:08:38.010]develop descriptions in that rubric
- [00:08:41.250]so that students are, know, okay,
- [00:08:43.560]in this project I'm supposed to use paragraphs
- [00:08:46.680]instead of isolated sentences.
- [00:08:48.540]Okay, that's good to know.
- [00:08:50.940]Kind of helping students to understand the proficiency
- [00:08:53.940]that we are looking for.
- [00:08:55.920]Yeah. And you can rename the categories.
- [00:08:58.140]I mean they can be numbers, but you can also rename them
- [00:09:00.870]and call that proficient, acceptable, basic, below basic,
- [00:09:03.990]or whatever other words you use to describe it.
- [00:09:06.870]And think about really using that language
- [00:09:10.590]that we saw before in Quick Rubric.
- [00:09:13.650]Emergent is considerably better,
- [00:09:16.140]because it talks about where do you want to go,
- [00:09:19.050]instead of saying that you are not performing at the level
- [00:09:22.830]that we want you to, while still sending the message
- [00:09:25.304]that you should be getting better.
- [00:09:27.690]Because you're just emerging.
- [00:09:29.160]So think about the language that you're using there.
- [00:09:31.890]And if their categories, you don't like the categories,
- [00:09:34.740]you can create your own category, it allows you to.
- [00:09:37.241]Okay, so let me create my own category.
- [00:09:43.140]How do I create my own category?
- [00:09:45.043]Yes. I just give it a name.
- [00:09:46.020]Yes, yes. Instead of choosing,
- [00:09:47.280]I give it a name.
- [00:09:48.120]Yes. And so let's say
- [00:09:49.590]one of the things I want kids to use
- [00:09:52.230]in the target language is colors.
- [00:09:56.730]It's something we talk about, especially in early.
- [00:09:59.730]We want them to use colors in sentences and in descriptions.
- [00:10:04.740]So I can add this and say, you know,
- [00:10:07.327]"The author uses multiple color words,"
- [00:10:16.290]right?
- [00:10:17.123]Yeah, to describe. "Multiple color words
- [00:10:21.240]to describe setting and characters."
- [00:10:27.660]Right? Yeah.
- [00:10:28.560]For example, it does not have to be
- [00:10:30.540]and we can actually say not just multiple color words,
- [00:10:33.390]but more sophisticated color words
- [00:10:35.430]beyond the basic five or six basic colors.
- [00:10:39.600]And that's, again, a way to specify
- [00:10:42.540]what the expectations are.
- [00:10:44.400]And you can be more specific sometimes
- [00:10:46.860]especially early on when I taught language.
- [00:10:49.170]I would say I need to see at least three.
- [00:10:51.595](laughs) Yeah.
- [00:10:52.470]Sometimes it's that basic
- [00:10:53.640]because we send a very clear message.
- [00:10:55.200]Sometimes you write it in more general way
- [00:10:58.260]to make it more open-ended.
- [00:11:00.270]Yeah, and also sometimes we, when we,
- [00:11:02.880]we have to be careful, you know,
- [00:11:05.520]when we say three color words.
- [00:11:07.440]Students might just put three color words there
- [00:11:09.660]and not in sentences.
- [00:11:11.010]We want them to use simple sentence
- [00:11:13.710]or you know connected sentences to describe the settings
- [00:11:18.660]with multiple colors kind of thing.
- [00:11:20.820]Yeah, and what I love here is you,
- [00:11:23.670]the minute I sent it out,
- [00:11:27.360]it had as many rows as I wanted,
- [00:11:29.730]but it saved only the ones I actually worked on.
- [00:11:32.610]And you can immediately modify the rubric.
- [00:11:35.580]So while it is now starting to be saved,
- [00:11:39.540]I don't have an account, so I'm not right now saved.
- [00:11:41.760]You can go back and modify the rubric,
- [00:11:43.710]and it takes you exactly to the page you were before.
- [00:11:46.603]What else can you tell me about RubiStar?
- [00:11:49.620]RubiStar, you know, if you do not have an account,
- [00:11:52.860]once you are done with the rubric,
- [00:11:54.540]you close the page and it's gone.
- [00:11:57.240]That's a word of warning. (laughing) Yeah.
- [00:11:58.590]So print it out.
- [00:11:59.430]So if you decide that you don't want an account,
- [00:12:02.340]which is perfectly fine,
- [00:12:03.934]just make sure you send it to print
- [00:12:07.080]and you have a copy in a PDF or in a paper format
- [00:12:10.260]so you're not losing all of that.
- [00:12:11.970]We highly recommend,
- [00:12:13.290]if it's available for free, get an account.
- [00:12:16.470]Especially as a teacher,
- [00:12:17.640]it's not going to be a problem for you.
- [00:12:20.670]Again, what I like,
- [00:12:22.350]as a variation is let your students go there
- [00:12:25.290]and create their own.
- [00:12:26.190]Again, they don't have to log in,
- [00:12:28.590]they don't have to submit any personal information,
- [00:12:31.050]so they can use it without any privacy concerns.
- [00:12:34.200]Create the rubric and they don't need to save it.
- [00:12:37.350]They can again, print it out and share, or PDF it and share.
- [00:12:40.298]And also, you know,
- [00:12:42.000]if I would allow my students
- [00:12:44.460]to create rubrics in their own groups,
- [00:12:46.800]and I would choose one, and then what are we going to use,
- [00:12:51.270]for example, Group Green's rubric for this project.
- [00:12:56.400]We're going to use Green,
- [00:12:59.730]the rubric from Group Yellow next time.
- [00:13:02.940]And this way the students really think,
- [00:13:04.800]oh, they, they're important.
- [00:13:06.600]They, their rubrics got chosen.
- [00:13:09.300]Yeah. That's great.
- [00:13:11.360]And finally there are, there is a simple tutorial
- [00:13:14.130]with some materials on how to do certain things.
- [00:13:17.040]And you can see the first thing is,
- [00:13:18.487]"I would like to create a printable rubric,
- [00:13:20.700]but do not wish to save it."
- [00:13:22.020]That's what we just talked about.
- [00:13:23.670]And the second thing is, it is available in Spanish.
- [00:13:26.280]So that's another resource that you can use
- [00:13:29.340]from that perspective.
- [00:13:31.860]So today we learned a lot about using technology
- [00:13:36.540]to enhance our rubric creation
- [00:13:38.310]and make it easier, make it student accessible,
- [00:13:42.300]and be able to solve a lot of problems quickly.
