- [00:00:08.670]Welcome to Finding Community at the
- [00:00:10.560]Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center session
- [00:00:13.170]offered by the Office of Academic Success
- [00:00:15.240]and Intercultural Services OASIS.
- [00:00:17.820]My name is Letty Garcia and I'm the Assistant Director
- [00:00:22.033]at OASIS and the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center.
- [00:00:24.641]In this session, you will learn about how students
- [00:00:26.070]from diverse identities cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- [00:00:29.130]can get connected and find a sense of belonging on campus
- [00:00:32.280]through academic and social resources found at the
- [00:00:34.860]Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center and Office of
- [00:00:37.230]Academic Success and Intercultural Services and also learn
- [00:00:40.350]how to get connected to various multicultural organizations.
- [00:00:46.200]Before we get started we would like to recognize the land
- [00:00:48.870]in which we reside.
- [00:00:50.460]The University of Nebraska is a public
- [00:00:52.740]land grant institution with campuses and programs
- [00:00:55.500]across the state that reside on the past, present and future
- [00:00:59.400]homelands of the Pawnee, Ponca, Oto-Missouri, Omaha,
- [00:01:03.270]Dakota, Lakota, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Kaw Peoples
- [00:01:07.590]as well as the relocated Ho Chunk, Winnebago, Iowa,
- [00:01:11.010]and Sac and Fox Peoples.
- [00:01:13.800]This knowledge allows us to better understand
- [00:01:15.960]that our opportunity to impact the state of Nebraska
- [00:01:18.660]and beyond and occupy these lands is a result of a history
- [00:01:22.500]of native indigenous peoples experience of displacement,
- [00:01:25.980]violence, settlement and survival which continues to inform
- [00:01:29.550]our present and future so with that,
- [00:01:32.280]we pay our respects to the indigenous community
- [00:01:34.380]in Lincoln and at UNL.
- [00:01:38.400]The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center offers
- [00:01:41.730]various resources and we are often referred to as the JGMC
- [00:01:46.260]and we are located on city campus east of the City Union.
- [00:01:50.460]The JGMC is a home to the Office of Academic Success
- [00:01:53.760]and Intercultural services known as OASIS, OASIS is a unit
- [00:01:58.260]within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion
- [00:02:01.380]and OASIS is housed in the Jackie Gaughan
- [00:02:03.390]Multicultural Center on the first floor.
- [00:02:06.990]The JGMC offers various resources that students
- [00:02:10.290]can take advantage of, academic support, computer labs,
- [00:02:14.670]study studio, which is our tutoring service which I will
- [00:02:17.970]highlight in the next few slides.
- [00:02:20.460]We offer the Kawasaki reading room which is a
- [00:02:24.060]Japanese reading library located on the third floor,
- [00:02:27.143]great place to study, you can find amazing views
- [00:02:30.990]at the JGMC and so we welcome any and all student
- [00:02:34.530]to come visit our space.
- [00:02:39.390]OASIS serves all University of Nebraska Lincoln students,
- [00:02:42.330]our services seek to serve students as they make
- [00:02:44.880]their adjustment to the university.
- [00:02:47.070]We do serve all University of Nebraska Lincoln students
- [00:02:50.430]and we do place an emphasis on meeting the needs
- [00:02:53.444]of first generation low income and students with diverse
- [00:02:55.560]backgrounds and identities.
- [00:02:57.330]The main goal and objective of OASIS is to ensure
- [00:03:00.150]that students have a smooth transition from high school
- [00:03:02.520]to college, our staff are aware of the difficulties
- [00:03:05.700]and challenges that students may face during their
- [00:03:08.460]first year especially those students who are
- [00:03:11.160]underrepresented students and we strive to encourage
- [00:03:15.690]these students to get connected to our resources
- [00:03:18.090]and supports.
- [00:03:19.170]We want to help students succeed by equipping them by
- [00:03:22.020]with the necessary skills and resources they need
- [00:03:24.420]to graduate, whether the student is their first
- [00:03:27.240]in their family to go to college or is interested
- [00:03:29.340]in gaining leadership skills OASIS has something
- [00:03:32.670]for that student.
- [00:03:36.240]Our mission is built on three pillars, academic excellence
- [00:03:39.450]diversity awareness and social engagement.
- [00:03:42.150]Although academics plays a large role in college
- [00:03:45.510]and student success, being socially engaged and aware of
- [00:03:49.260]diversity on campus is just as important and so we strive
- [00:03:52.980]to bring different experiences around these three pillars
- [00:03:57.120]so that students can find community and be part of OASIS.
- [00:04:02.550]There are several ways students can find community
- [00:04:04.950]within the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center
- [00:04:07.260]such as the OASIS Student Success Program
- [00:04:10.200]and Peer Mentor Program.
- [00:04:11.820]I will go over these in greater detail in the next
- [00:04:14.883]couple of slides and we also honor students in our program
- [00:04:17.970]after their second year for earning at 3.5 GPA or higher
- [00:04:22.320]at the Academic excellence and graduation receptions
- [00:04:25.440]for seniors and this is to acknowledge and recognize
- [00:04:29.250]their hard work and dedication put into their academics
- [00:04:32.700]and this is also a good time where we invite family to come
- [00:04:35.790]and be in community with us as we celebrate
- [00:04:38.040]students' academic achievements.
- [00:04:40.320]The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center also offers
- [00:04:42.570]free tutoring services at Study Studio which are available
- [00:04:46.020]Monday through Thursday in the evening hours and we help
- [00:04:49.950]get students get connected with this resource by partnering
- [00:04:54.127]with different campus resources and supports such as
- [00:04:57.960]ResLife to bring in Study Studio and tutoring services
- [00:05:02.070]where students are at and so we hope that students
- [00:05:05.040]will take advantage of this resource that is available
- [00:05:08.010]to them at free cost.
- [00:05:13.470]First year students can choose to participate in the OASIS
- [00:05:16.110]Student Success Program, which consists of a 13 week
- [00:05:19.350]zero credit pass or no pass seminar that will provide them
- [00:05:23.070]with resources and tools to be successful at the university.
- [00:05:27.390]Students are also paired with a peer mentor who is an
- [00:05:30.180]upper class student that assists with their transition
- [00:05:32.550]from high school to college.
- [00:05:37.530]The OASIS Student Success Program is designed to
- [00:05:41.310]assist students with their transition from high school
- [00:05:44.457]to college, like I said and it covers topics
- [00:05:46.680]like type management, campus resources, financial literacy,
- [00:05:50.220]study skills, identity and diversity awareness
- [00:05:53.490]and mental health and wellbeing resources.
- [00:05:56.670]Students are also paired with an OASIS staff member
- [00:05:59.310]who is meeting with them regularly throughout the semester
- [00:06:03.510]and throughout the academic year and they also get
- [00:06:07.360]the opportunity to connect with their peer mentor
- [00:06:10.476]whom they meet with regularly throughout their first year.
- [00:06:14.010]There are several ways to be socially engaged on campus,
- [00:06:18.203]we host the OASIS Student Success Program Orientation
- [00:06:22.200]or OASIS Welcome Experience in August, the OASIS Kickoff
- [00:06:26.280]is another great way to get connected with our office.
- [00:06:29.070]We offer live entertainment on the plaza and information
- [00:06:31.890]from registered student organizations on how to get involved
- [00:06:35.070]with those organizations.
- [00:06:37.200]The OASIS Student Advisory Board is a student-led
- [00:06:39.720]organization that hosts events and programs for students
- [00:06:43.020]by students building confidence relationships
- [00:06:45.690]and overall development through involvement.
- [00:06:48.240]No matter what your identity or background is
- [00:06:50.250]there is something for you here at UNL and students can hear
- [00:06:54.570]about leadership opportunities through other opportunities
- [00:06:58.245]as well and programs that we offer at OASIS such as
- [00:07:01.170]Lunch and Learn or Stop, Serve and Mingle where students
- [00:07:03.960]can meet with new people interact while working on
- [00:07:08.250]arts and crafts or volunteering their time
- [00:07:10.920]for a local nonprofit.
- [00:07:15.330]Other organizations students can be a part of, for example
- [00:07:19.110]include African People's Union, Asian Student Union,
- [00:07:23.190]Mexican American Student Association,
- [00:07:25.620]University of Nebraska Intertribal Exchange,
- [00:07:28.440]Sister Circle, Latina Support Group,
- [00:07:30.660]Define American, National Pan Council,
- [00:07:33.780]Multicultural Council to name a few.
- [00:07:36.960]Like I said, there's something for everyone
- [00:07:39.000]at the university and at the Jackie Gaughan
- [00:07:40.950]Multicultural Center.
- [00:07:44.430]OASIS seeks to promote diversity awareness as well
- [00:07:48.090]by providing a brave space and safe space where every voice
- [00:07:53.400]and every interaction matters and specifically,
- [00:07:56.490]we promote diversity through specific events like Dish It Up
- [00:08:01.380]which are a series of conversations held on select Tuesdays
- [00:08:05.490]throughout the academic year.
- [00:08:07.620]Dish It Up is an interactive weekly conversation
- [00:08:10.260]where individuals can share their personal views
- [00:08:12.870]learn from others and engage in civil discussions
- [00:08:16.421]concerning current events, topics affecting students lives,
- [00:08:19.500]UNL and National and International happenings.
- [00:08:23.430]Husker Dialogues is also another event for students
- [00:08:27.090]to participate, it is a mandatory event for first year
- [00:08:31.022]students about promoting, respecting and understanding
- [00:08:33.390]different perspectives and identities.
- [00:08:36.240]Other opportunities for students to find community
- [00:08:38.580]and celebrate diversity are through the OASIS and the
- [00:08:42.420]Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center Week Celebration Events.
- [00:08:45.990]These typically celebrate the anniversary of the building
- [00:08:48.960]or the office which there provides different opportunities,
- [00:08:53.280]different events like an open house, scavenger hunt, games,
- [00:08:57.630]resources for students to take advantage of and connect
- [00:09:00.750]with our staff as well.
- [00:09:02.940]OASIS acknowledges and embraces and celebrates
- [00:09:06.210]cultural heritage celebration months and so throughout
- [00:09:09.210]the year you will also see lots of those types of events
- [00:09:12.480]and opportunities for you to come and check those out
- [00:09:15.150]and find community and get connected with other people
- [00:09:18.989]on campus as well.
- [00:09:23.610]There are many benefits to becoming an OASIS Scholar,
- [00:09:26.880]students gain familiarity with UNL campus
- [00:09:29.670]and academic resources, academic and career support
- [00:09:33.030]to assist in their transition to college.
- [00:09:35.430]Students also have access to many leadership opportunities
- [00:09:38.790]like our OASIS student worker positions and where they have
- [00:09:42.810]the opportunity to enhance their transferrable skills,
- [00:09:45.960]increase their network with people from different
- [00:09:48.781]backgrounds and perspectives and gain awareness
- [00:09:51.530]of diversity related issues, broadening their understanding
- [00:09:54.180]and preparedness for diverse and global workforce.
- [00:10:00.540]As a participant of the OASIS Student Success Program
