- [00:00:03.690]Hello.
- [00:00:04.523]My name is Emily Griffin Overocker
- [00:00:06.720]and I'm the Student Success Coordinator
- [00:00:09.240]in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
- [00:00:12.810]Welcome to our session.
- [00:00:17.760]We're so glad to have you joining the
- [00:00:19.500]Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts
- [00:00:22.140]this upcoming semester.
- [00:00:24.060]You might hear us refer to the
- [00:00:25.770]Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts as HLCFPA,
- [00:00:32.730]or more commonly, just FPA for short.
- [00:00:36.810]Throughout this session,
- [00:00:37.740]we're gonna cover a lot of information
- [00:00:39.440]in a short period of time.
- [00:00:41.700]Hopefully we'll get all of your
- [00:00:42.870]questions answered by the end.
- [00:00:45.000]We're gonna start by talking a little bit about the
- [00:00:47.040]Hixson-Lied College and your
- [00:00:48.480]support team here in the college,
- [00:00:50.490]we're gonna explore our degree programs,
- [00:00:53.280]we're gonna learn about advising and success planning tools,
- [00:00:56.580]we're gonna identify key resources and discover
- [00:00:59.730]opportunities for you to get involved in the college.
- [00:01:04.170]So to start out,
- [00:01:05.070]I wanna tell you a little bit about the structure of the
- [00:01:07.980]Hixson-Lied College and how
- [00:01:09.360]we fit into the broader university.
- [00:01:11.880]As you can see by the diagram on the screen,
- [00:01:14.040]the University of Nebraska is
- [00:01:15.570]made up of a lot of different colleges.
- [00:01:18.180]You can see those across in the second row.
- [00:01:21.090]The Hixson-Lied College is one college
- [00:01:24.060]that makes up the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:26.880]Our college is broken in up into three schools,
- [00:01:30.090]the School of Art, Art History, and Design,
- [00:01:33.030]the Glenn Korff School of Music,
- [00:01:34.650]and the Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film.
- [00:01:37.830]Other colleges may refer to their subunits as departments,
- [00:01:42.180]but in Hixson-Lied, we call them schools.
- [00:01:46.650]I want you to get to know some of the folks who will be with
- [00:01:49.260]you throughout your journey here
- [00:01:51.510]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:54.090]Chris Watson is someone you may have met when you came to a
- [00:01:57.690]campus visit or another event on campus.
- [00:02:01.290]There's me, the Student Success Coordinator,
- [00:02:03.810]Sarah Troupe, my office mate,
- [00:02:05.340]who is the Academic Navigator for our college,
- [00:02:08.820]Jacqueline Mattingly,
- [00:02:09.780]who's the Associate Dean for Student Success
- [00:02:12.390]and she's also a professor in the School of Music.
- [00:02:15.180]If you have her for class, you wanna call her Dr. Mattingly.
- [00:02:18.720]Sarah Fedderson,
- [00:02:19.830]who is the Assistant Director of Advising and Enrollment.
- [00:02:22.620]She knows all the things behind the scenes to help make your
- [00:02:25.620]academic journey successful.
- [00:02:27.690]And finally,
- [00:02:28.650]you will have an assigned advisor who will really be your
- [00:02:31.590]source for academic, personal,
- [00:02:33.600]and professional support throughout your time here at UNL.
- [00:02:39.212]And where can you find us?
- [00:02:40.980]Well, Sarah and I office in the Student Success Center,
- [00:02:43.890]which you can see in the Woods Art Building
- [00:02:46.320]room 111 pointed with that red arrow on the screen.
- [00:02:50.010]The Student Success Center is
- [00:02:51.270]the home for our student support services.
- [00:02:53.910]It's a place where you can connect
- [00:02:55.290]to resources when you need them.
- [00:02:57.360]Get any of your questions answered.
- [00:02:59.250]If we don't know the answers, we usually know who to call.
- [00:03:03.000]We also host events that support
- [00:03:04.800]your wellbeing and we have a pop-in pantry,
- [00:03:08.220]which is a place where you can get free food and hygiene
- [00:03:10.950]items anytime that we're open.
- [00:03:15.570]So let's transition a little bit
- [00:03:16.950]to talk about academic advising.
- [00:03:19.410]We want you to understand that academic advising is really a
- [00:03:22.470]student-driven process where you collaborate with your
- [00:03:25.920]advisor on what you wanna take,
- [00:03:28.710]what your professional goals are,
- [00:03:31.470]what you wanna be involved in.
- [00:03:33.510]Your advisor will definitely help you navigate your
- [00:03:36.150]academic personal and professional questions,
- [00:03:38.760]they will help you with long-term degree planning,
- [00:03:41.370]and they can even recommend
- [00:03:42.750]extracurricular experiences to compliment your education.
- [00:03:47.700]You will get a permanent advisor assigned to you and you'll
- [00:03:51.360]see it in your MyRED at the end of the summer.
- [00:03:54.210]But for now,
- [00:03:55.230]please contact your NSE advisor if you have any questions
- [00:03:58.410]before the semester starts.
- [00:04:03.120]I'm sure you've been asked hundreds of times,
- [00:04:05.250]what are you gonna major in when you go to college?
- [00:04:07.770]It's a big question, and if you're anything like me,
- [00:04:10.680]you may have some goals that
- [00:04:12.360]you feel pretty confident about,
- [00:04:14.610]but there's also a lot of students who just aren't quite
- [00:04:17.310]sure when they start college.
- [00:04:19.590]I've broken down our three different schools
- [00:04:21.600]by the majors that they offer.
- [00:04:23.490]In the School of Art, Art History, and Design,
- [00:04:25.560]you can see that we have both a BFA and a BA.
- [00:04:30.000]We're gonna try not to use too many acronyms and other
- [00:04:33.000]initials when we talk about things
- [00:04:34.530]so that you can understand.
- [00:04:36.570]BFA stands for Bachelor of Fine Arts
- [00:04:40.770]and BA stands for Bachelor of Arts.
- [00:04:43.560]So you'll see on this screen several BAs and several BFAs.
- [00:04:48.660]In the School of Music, we add in the BM,
- [00:04:51.480]which is the Bachelors of Music, and the BME,
- [00:04:54.976]which is the Bachelor's of Music Education.
- [00:04:57.840]You might be a little feeling overwhelmed if your degree
- [00:05:00.600]program that you're interested in
- [00:05:02.010]has two choices, like art or music.
- [00:05:05.880]That's okay.
- [00:05:06.960]We will definitely help you navigate that.
- [00:05:10.110]The first year,
- [00:05:10.943]a lot of the classes are similar and so it's okay to change
- [00:05:14.070]your mind too once you get going.
- [00:05:16.470]A little bit later in the presentation,
- [00:05:18.090]we'll talk more details about
- [00:05:19.560]the differences between those two degrees.
- [00:05:26.070]So an important thing for you to know about your degree is
- [00:05:28.620]that we are gonna build in
- [00:05:29.820]what's called experiential learning.
- [00:05:32.970]This is a requirement for all students at UNL.
- [00:05:36.360]We want you to have experiential learning
- [00:05:38.550]as part of your courses.
- [00:05:40.852]These experiences can include internships, research,
- [00:05:44.880]creative activity, or international engagement.
- [00:05:48.180]In our college,
- [00:05:49.770]all majors have at least one
- [00:05:51.840]EL course embedded in its requirements,
- [00:05:54.420]so you won't have to stress
- [00:05:55.920]about meeting this requirement.
- [00:06:00.660]When you think about your degree,
- [00:06:02.970]besides the experiential learning,
- [00:06:05.370]we want you to know about all the other components.
- [00:06:08.460]If you want to take a look at the screen,
- [00:06:11.490]you can see some of the major components of your degree
- [00:06:14.310]broken down in the red squares.
- [00:06:17.790]I like to think of your degree as a giant pie.
- [00:06:21.600]Every piece is a little bit different size,
- [00:06:23.970]but when you put it all together,
- [00:06:25.440]that's how you end up with a degree from the university.
- [00:06:30.510]So kind of breaking down that pie,
- [00:06:32.130]let's start by talking about ACE courses.
- [00:06:35.610]Back in my day, we called these the gen-eds,
- [00:06:38.340]but ACE courses is the Achievement-Centered Education that
- [00:06:41.940]we require all students at UNL to take.
- [00:06:48.150]These ACE courses are something
- [00:06:50.070]that you'll take no matter what your major is.
- [00:06:52.770]They're gonna compliment your major and help you have skills
- [00:06:55.290]that are gonna make you more well-rounded for your
- [00:06:57.180]professional and your personal life.
- [00:06:59.490]You can see four main categories across the bottom of the
- [00:07:02.940]different types of ACE courses.
- [00:07:05.340]In some of these classes,
- [00:07:07.170]or some of these categories, excuse me,
- [00:07:09.480]your major may dictate what courses
- [00:07:13.230]that you take within those,
- [00:07:15.180]that ACE category, and in others,
- [00:07:17.220]you'll have tons of choices, like ACE five, the humanities,
- [00:07:21.000]there are over 100 courses
- [00:07:22.470]in that category alone to choose from.
- [00:07:24.930]So your ACEs can be a place where you take things that sound
- [00:07:27.840]fun and interesting to you to compliment your major.
- [00:07:33.300]The next part,
- [00:07:34.830]the biggest piece of your pie is the major requirements.
- [00:07:38.280]Those are gonna be unique to
- [00:07:39.690]each different major that we have on campus.
- [00:07:42.780]In our college, we have what we call core requirements,
- [00:07:46.500]which are common to everybody in the major.
- [00:07:49.050]These examples are theory, history, and a lot of those,
- [00:07:52.560]you'll be taking early in your academic career.
- [00:07:55.680]And then, we have what we call options,
- [00:07:57.960]or you might call them an emphasis or a specialization
- [00:08:01.530]within your chosen area.
- [00:08:02.910]So, for example, if you're a music major,
- [00:08:05.010]you may choose to have your option
- [00:08:07.410]be in voice or maybe a specific instrument.
- [00:08:09.810]Maybe in art, you're into sculpture or photography,
- [00:08:13.020]design tech for theater.
- [00:08:14.790]So that's where you get to kind of hone in
- [00:08:16.250]in your specialized curriculum that you are interested in.
- [00:08:21.210]All of our curriculum are put together by our faculty
- [00:08:24.720]in the different departments and colleges, or, excuse me,
- [00:08:28.140]schools and also are monitored
- [00:08:31.050]by our national accrediting boards.
- [00:08:35.640]The next piece of your pie are your minor requirements.
- [00:08:39.660]In the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts,
- [00:08:42.330]we do have some degrees that require a minor.
- [00:08:45.780]You'll see those listed on the screen.
- [00:08:48.330]Other degrees allow for minors,
- [00:08:50.250]but due to the large amount
- [00:08:51.600]of credits required for the major,
- [00:08:53.670]you should expect to stay beyond
- [00:08:55.650]four years for those degree programs.
- [00:08:57.840]We'll talk a little bit more about this in a few minutes.
- [00:09:03.000]In the Hixson-Lied College of Fine Performing Arts,
- [00:09:05.310]we do have a foreign language requirement
- [00:09:07.680]for BA and BM degrees.
- [00:09:10.830]Again, that's Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music.
- [00:09:14.760]You either need a four-year sequence of the same language in
- [00:09:18.060]high school or four semesters while you're here at UNL.
- [00:09:21.570]If you haven't met that requirement,
- [00:09:23.640]we encourage students to take
- [00:09:24.990]the Modern Language Placement Exam so that
- [00:09:27.871]they can build on the language
- [00:09:29.490]that they may have had in high school.
- [00:09:31.350]If you're starting at the beginning
- [00:09:32.790]of your language requirement,
- [00:09:34.110]then you can pick anything you want
- [00:09:36.297]and you don't need to take an exam first.
- [00:09:40.800]The next part of your degree are what we call electives.
- [00:09:44.850]Every degree at UNL requires a minimum of 120 credit hours.
- [00:09:49.950]If your degree program has
- [00:09:51.600]less than 120 credit hours specified for you,
- [00:09:56.100]then the amount left over are your electives.
- [00:09:59.520]So thinking about that pie again, you have your ACEs,
- [00:10:02.910]your major, maybe your minor,
- [00:10:04.560]and then let's say you have a few left
- [00:10:06.840]and to the 120 credits, there you go.
- [00:10:09.930]Those are your electives.
- [00:10:11.850]On this screen,
- [00:10:13.247]you can see that different majors
- [00:10:16.190]in our college have different amounts of electives,
- [00:10:19.320]generally speaking.
- [00:10:20.940]Of course,
- [00:10:21.773]these all change based on
- [00:10:22.890]what kind of minors you might pick.
- [00:10:24.870]Maybe you have an AP credit
- [00:10:26.460]coming in from high school or dual enrollment credit
- [00:10:29.070]and so that may impact some of these numbers.
- [00:10:32.430]You'll notice on the left side,
- [00:10:34.890]the BA degrees tend to have more elective hours,
- [00:10:38.760]those Bachelors of Art degrees.
- [00:10:41.820]I like to say they have more wiggle room,
- [00:10:44.610]but that's because those are the degrees, again,
- [00:10:47.490]that require you to pick a minor.
- [00:10:49.830]The BFA, or excuse me, the BME and the BM,
- [00:10:54.990]those are gonna have less elective hours because the
- [00:10:57.990]curriculum is more defined for you ahead of time.
- [00:11:01.530]When you have elective credits,
- [00:11:03.150]you can take anything you want,
- [00:11:05.520]but a smart plan is to think about a second major,
- [00:11:08.730]a minor, at abroad,
- [00:11:10.680]or anything that you think would add value to your degree.
- [00:11:16.830]We have to talk about grades just a little bit.
- [00:11:20.370]It's important to know that any of your courses
- [00:11:23.220]in the major requirements section, again,
- [00:11:25.410]that's that giant piece of pie for your degree,
- [00:11:28.290]may not be taken for pass/no pass,
- [00:11:31.230]and you must earn a grade of C or better in those courses.
- [00:11:34.950]If you earn a C minus or lower,
- [00:11:39.690]you may have to retake that course
- [00:11:41.370]to satisfy the major requirements.
- [00:11:44.730]Every student in our college
- [00:11:46.350]must maintain a minimum current,
- [00:11:49.500]which means the semester you're in right now,
- [00:11:51.360]and cumulative,
- [00:11:52.193]meaning all of your semesters added together,
- [00:11:54.870]GPA of 2.0 or a C average to remain in good standing.
- [00:11:59.790]If for some reason that you missed that mark,
- [00:12:02.430]the university has some processes
- [00:12:04.500]for academic probation and possible dismissal.
- [00:12:08.160]The big key here for you to hear
- [00:12:10.410]is that we don't want you to not make it in school.
- [00:12:13.350]We're investing in you as much as
- [00:12:15.450]you're investing in this process for yourself.
- [00:12:18.090]So when you very, very first start to have struggles,
- [00:12:21.240]that's when you should reach out for help.
- [00:12:23.760]The sooner you reach out for help,
- [00:12:25.260]the more options we have to
- [00:12:26.670]help you be successful in your classes.
- [00:12:29.430]Maybe it's tutoring,
- [00:12:30.600]maybe it's changing a course to something else,
- [00:12:32.850]maybe it's dropping a course so you have a lighter load.
- [00:12:36.120]Reach out for help when you need it.
- [00:12:38.670]The only dumb question is the one that you don't ask.
- [00:12:42.540]I do wanna make sure that you note,
- [00:12:44.130]if you're in theater or emerging media arts,
- [00:12:46.530]you do have a higher GPA just to be in that program.
- [00:12:49.890]So you could be in good standing at the university,
- [00:12:52.050]but maybe not in your program
- [00:12:53.550]if you fall below the required GPA.
- [00:12:59.910]There's so many things to know about your degree and I just
- [00:13:02.790]went through several big components of what makes up your
- [00:13:05.790]degree and you may be wondering,
- [00:13:07.380]where can I read more about this?
- [00:13:09.720]Well, you should go to the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:13:12.900]I have a screenshot of the website on my screen right now.
- [00:13:17.760]You can see that it's broken down by academic colleges.
- [00:13:20.850]The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is
- [00:13:23.250]down in the bottom-left corner
- [00:13:24.690]with the dancers on the screen.
- [00:13:26.940]The catalog is published every year.
- [00:13:29.550]It includes course descriptions and prerequisites.
- [00:13:32.940]If you're not familiar with that term,
- [00:13:34.740]a prerequisite is something that you have to have
- [00:13:37.290]before you can take something else.
- [00:13:39.540]Sometimes that's something as simple as you have to have
- [00:13:43.140]English 1 before you can take English 2.
- [00:13:46.830]Sometimes it's about being in a particular major.
- [00:13:50.100]Maybe for some classes,
- [00:13:51.930]you can't take the class unless
- [00:13:53.460]you're in the major for that class.
- [00:13:55.800]Sometimes it's about class standing.
- [00:13:57.780]You must be a sophomore to take this class, for example.
- [00:14:01.920]So those are all listed in the catalog.
- [00:14:04.110]There's also sample for your plans.
- [00:14:06.450]So if the idea of how the next four years are gonna lay out
- [00:14:09.300]for you is kind of overwhelming, don't worry.
- [00:14:12.300]We have a plan in place that you can start with.
- [00:14:15.600]There's also all the degree requirements.
- [00:14:18.060]So what makes up those different pieces of the pie,
- [00:14:20.730]that's all listed in the catalog.
- [00:14:22.560]And finally, criteria for earning honors.
- [00:14:24.960]And I have the website listed there for you.
- [00:14:27.870]Take some time and explore around in the catalog.
- [00:14:31.560]You can look at different minors
- [00:14:33.270]if you're thinking about a double major,
- [00:14:35.070]you can look at how all of those things might fit together
- [00:14:37.650]for you.
- [00:14:38.790]You can think of the catalog
- [00:14:40.110]sort of like your contract with the university.
- [00:14:43.020]You're gonna be on the same catalog until you graduate in
- [00:14:45.900]almost all cases.
- [00:14:47.040]Of course there's, if you stop out for a little while,
- [00:14:50.010]you might be on a new catalog, but otherwise,
- [00:14:52.560]this is what you'll be doing for the next few years.
- [00:14:57.600]As an example,
- [00:14:58.470]I wanted to click into the catalog so you could kind of see
- [00:15:01.103]what it might look like.
- [00:15:03.450]And I picked music as my first example.
- [00:15:06.450]There's some tabs across the top of the page that you can
- [00:15:09.720]click on to see different parts of the degree.
- [00:15:13.740]On the overview page,
- [00:15:15.330]you can see all about the basis for the degree
- [00:15:18.870]and then the degree at a glance
- [00:15:21.060]towards the bottom of the page kind of breaks
- [00:15:23.160]through those requirements,
- [00:15:24.210]like I was talking about, the pie that makes up your degree.
- [00:15:27.960]Over on the right side of the screen,
- [00:15:30.240]you'll see quick points.
- [00:15:31.200]So you can see what college offers.
- [00:15:33.570]Again, Hixson-Lied is for the School for Music,
- [00:15:37.320]the degrees BM or BME for music,
- [00:15:40.800]hours required, 120.
- [00:15:43.110]If you see minor available and it says yes,
- [00:15:45.750]that means another person in another degree program could
- [00:15:48.630]choose music as a minor.
- [00:15:50.820]So if you're interested in finding a minor and you look at
- [00:15:53.220]the page and it says no,
- [00:15:55.140]then you'll know that they don't
- [00:15:56.520]have a minor available for you.
- [00:15:58.740]And then you'll see an advisor listed.
- [00:16:00.690]You've heard of Professor Jacqueline Mattingly
- [00:16:02.820]already in this presentation.
- [00:16:05.010]The advisor listed may not be
- [00:16:06.630]your advisor if you're in this.
- [00:16:09.210]I like to think of the advisors on these pages as the
- [00:16:11.640]captain of the advisors for that music major.
- [00:16:15.210]If you click on some of the other tabs,
- [00:16:17.190]then it dives in deeper to
- [00:16:20.310]different information about the degree.
- [00:16:23.490]I wanna look at a couple of four-year plans
- [00:16:25.470]with you as an example, too.
- [00:16:27.570]This time, I'm looking at graphic design.
- [00:16:30.150]You can see that it's broken down in terms,
- [00:16:32.850]that's another word for semesters,
- [00:16:35.280]and it will tell you, again, just a sample.
- [00:16:38.340]This can be modified based on what classes you're taking.
- [00:16:42.480]If you have AP credit or dual enrollment,
- [00:16:45.120]if you have a different minor or major,
- [00:16:47.100]you'll wanna adapt this for you.
- [00:16:49.350]But this gives you kind of a general idea.
- [00:16:51.720]You can see in each term, the course is listed.
- [00:16:56.400]You may be wondering, what in the world is ARTP 151?
- [00:17:02.700]Well,
- [00:17:03.533]you can click on those red links and it will take you to the
- [00:17:05.910]course description for those different courses
- [00:17:08.450]so that you'll know exactly
- [00:17:09.990]what you'll be doing each year.
- [00:17:13.740]Over on the quick points, just to kind of point out,
- [00:17:16.260]you can't do a minor in graphic design
- [00:17:18.300]at the university at this time.
- [00:17:20.610]And Christy Aggens is the advisor captain,
- [00:17:23.520]again, for this major.
- [00:17:29.100]So in addition to the catalog,
- [00:17:30.660]I wanna tell you other degree resources,
- [00:17:33.300]and that's their registrar's office.
- [00:17:34.830]And I have the website listed there for you.
- [00:17:37.410]Anything related to enrollment,
- [00:17:40.080]university academic standards, policies,
- [00:17:42.810]those are gonna be found at the registrar's website.
- [00:17:46.440]Important things to note, like the academic calendar,
- [00:17:49.710]when do you get a break from classes,
- [00:17:52.020]like spring break or fall break,
- [00:17:54.450]winter add/drop, refund deadlines, when is graduation,
- [00:17:58.740]all of those dates are important
- [00:18:00.450]for you to note ahead of time.
- [00:18:02.490]Priority registration is the term that we use for when it's
- [00:18:05.880]your turn to enroll for the future semester.
- [00:18:09.030]Priority of registration always seems to sneak up on
- [00:18:11.760]students because it comes pretty much in the middle of the
- [00:18:14.790]semester for the next semester.
- [00:18:16.770]So you'll wanna know when you're
- [00:18:18.030]able to enroll on the registrar's website.
- [00:18:22.170]Grading policies,
- [00:18:23.430]I mentioned pass/no pass related to your major courses,
- [00:18:26.970]but you'll wanna know about
- [00:18:28.050]those policies related to all of your courses.
- [00:18:31.590]Final exam schedule,
- [00:18:33.990]you may not be familiar with the fact
- [00:18:35.880]that in college, during finals week,
- [00:18:38.310]you only go to every class one time and to take your final
- [00:18:41.460]exam or to turn in a project,
- [00:18:43.770]depending on what the class is.
- [00:18:45.990]That class schedule for that last week
- [00:18:48.360]will be listed on the registrar's website.
- [00:18:50.850]And finally,
- [00:18:51.870]the registrar's website has tutorials
- [00:18:54.090]for all student information systems.
- [00:18:57.390]You're kind of wondering what
- [00:18:58.440]a student information system is?
- [00:19:00.060]I will show you a couple examples next.
- [00:19:04.470]So the first tool that the registrar's website has a
- [00:19:08.340]tutorial video for is what we call the degree planner.
- [00:19:12.930]This is a system that helps you plan out your degree.
- [00:19:17.370]It will make sure that you don't spend any more time,
- [00:19:20.370]and more importantly,
- [00:19:21.270]money here at the university than absolutely necessary.
- [00:19:26.070]I recommend that you start with a sample plan
- [00:19:28.920]'cause it's gonna save you time
- [00:19:30.360]in entering all the major courses in those
- [00:19:32.340]sequences with prerequisites.
- [00:19:34.680]And then you can change it to tailor it for your own needs.
- [00:19:38.340]Again,
- [00:19:39.173]adding in minors or maybe a second major
- [00:19:41.670]or any other courses that you have.
- [00:19:44.400]Finally,
- [00:19:45.233]you can review and revise each term
- [00:19:47.580]to reflect new things that you're into, new goals,
- [00:19:50.940]new courses that maybe your department has added.
- [00:19:53.910]You can see an example of what this might look like
- [00:19:56.370]over on the right-hand screen.
- [00:19:58.890]You can see that you can toggle between different semesters,
- [00:20:02.310]you can see what classes that
- [00:20:05.070]you might need prerequisites for,
- [00:20:06.780]what the requirements are for those classes.
- [00:20:08.790]So this is a great tool for you to use.
- [00:20:11.280]During your academic advising session,
- [00:20:13.050]your advisor should go over this with you.
- [00:20:17.250]The next tool that the registrar's office
- [00:20:19.410]has a tutorial for is the degree audit.
- [00:20:23.250]This is my favorite tool because I like to-do lists
- [00:20:26.340]and this is a giant to-do list
- [00:20:28.080]that you check off all of your requirements.
- [00:20:30.780]You'll find the degree audit through your MyRED account.
- [00:20:35.010]This is an interactive document that shows you your progress
- [00:20:38.460]in all the different ways.
- [00:20:40.140]It will pull in any UNL courses that you've taken,
- [00:20:43.440]transfer credits,
- [00:20:44.370]and courses in progress so you can kind of
- [00:20:46.770]monitor your progress toward graduation.
- [00:20:49.500]Every time you log in,
- [00:20:50.550]you'll wanna make sure and run a new audit to make sure that
- [00:20:52.860]it's the most accurate information.
- [00:20:55.740]I know the screen is really small, but just at a glance,
- [00:20:59.760]anything that you see on the right-hand side that's green,
- [00:21:02.790]that means you're already done with those requirements.
- [00:21:05.640]Blue means in progress and red means still to go.
- [00:21:09.330]The top part has some pie and bar graphs to kind of give you
- [00:21:12.660]a quick visualization of your different requirements.
- [00:21:16.320]And then if you scroll down to the bottom,
- [00:21:19.200]those are the actual requirements with green check marks,
- [00:21:22.230]red X's for not done yet, or blue for in progress.
- [00:21:26.940]So this is a really fun tool.
- [00:21:29.580]If you ever log in and it doesn't look correct to you,
- [00:21:32.040]make sure you check with your advisor and they can help with
- [00:21:35.370]any questions that you have.
- [00:21:39.300]Speaking of your advisors and questions,
- [00:21:42.420]an important law for you to know about is called FERPA,
- [00:21:46.020]the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
- [00:21:49.680]This is a federal law that protects student information,
- [00:21:54.450]student privacy.
- [00:21:56.640]All of the time, parents really wanna know,
- [00:21:59.250]or parents or other caring adults in your life wanna know,
- [00:22:02.400]how's my student doing, or what does the bill look like,
- [00:22:05.280]or, you know, are they going to class?
- [00:22:07.980]Well FERPA dictates for the university
- [00:22:11.040]what we can or can't share
- [00:22:12.480]with others about your record students.
- [00:22:16.230]When you're enrolled in college,
- [00:22:18.000]you, the student, has full control over what we can share.
- [00:22:22.380]No educational information can be shared
- [00:22:24.750]without the student's written permission,
- [00:22:27.090]whether that be the schedule,
- [00:22:28.590]what classes you're taking, your grades, your attendance,
- [00:22:31.530]even student conduct issues.
- [00:22:34.770]So what you'll wanna do if you want
- [00:22:38.160]your parents or other supportive adults to have
- [00:22:40.770]access to your records is
- [00:22:42.210]you should create guest access for them in MyRED.
- [00:22:45.960]You don't need to give them your own password.
- [00:22:48.360]You wanna create guest access.
- [00:22:50.760]With that guest access, students,
- [00:22:53.040]you can decide who you want to see what.
- [00:22:55.710]So you might want some individuals
- [00:22:57.510]to see your financial information, and others,
- [00:23:00.630]you might wanna share everything,
- [00:23:02.910]some, you might only wanna share grades.
- [00:23:04.950]It's really up to you and you can change this at any time.
- [00:23:09.450]So if your relationship changes with an adult in your
- [00:23:12.660]life that you want to change the access,
- [00:23:15.420]you have the control to do that.
- [00:23:20.730]Now I wanna transition a little bit to talk about some of
- [00:23:23.190]the campus resources.
- [00:23:24.990]Throughout your time at orientation,
- [00:23:26.640]I'm sure you're gonna hear more from these different offices
- [00:23:29.610]and different resources on campus,
- [00:23:31.290]but I wanna make sure and highlight 'em here too
- [00:23:33.810]so that you know that we're all part of
- [00:23:35.400]the team just wanting you to be
- [00:23:37.680]successful in your time here.
- [00:23:40.080]Career Services is a place on campus that can help you with,
- [00:23:44.250]what am I gonna do with my major,
- [00:23:46.590]or where can I find an internship?
- [00:23:49.170]I have to make a resume.
- [00:23:50.340]What does that even look like?
- [00:23:52.500]Oh my goodness,
- [00:23:53.333]I don't like my major and I'm not sure what to change to.
- [00:23:56.850]Those are all examples of questions that could help someone
- [00:24:00.210]in the career services office can help you with.
- [00:24:03.450]Husker Hub, you're definitely gonna hear about a lot.
- [00:24:06.270]Husker Hub is the place for any kind
- [00:24:08.400]of enrollment questions, financial aid, scholarships.
- [00:24:12.270]They're really the one stop on campus
- [00:24:14.340]for all kinds of support.
- [00:24:17.280]You can go there in person,
- [00:24:19.170]you can have a phone or a Zoom appointment with them,
- [00:24:22.950]you can email your questions.
- [00:24:24.480]There's a lot of great ways to connect with the hub and
- [00:24:27.330]they're the only ones on campus
- [00:24:28.860]who can really see all of your records.
- [00:24:31.530]Your academic advisors,
- [00:24:32.760]they can't see your financial information or your
- [00:24:34.920]scholarships from where they are,
- [00:24:36.570]so the Husker Hub is where you'll wanna go for that.
- [00:24:39.690]The Center for Academic Success and Transition,
- [00:24:42.750]we love acronyms, we call it the CAST office.
- [00:24:45.900]They're really awesome at helping students figure out how to
- [00:24:49.050]be good college students.
- [00:24:50.790]For some of you,
- [00:24:51.780]college is gonna seem so easy
- [00:24:54.120]because you studied so hard in high school,
- [00:24:57.030]and for others of you,
- [00:24:58.230]high school was a breeze and now all of a sudden,
- [00:25:00.630]college is gonna be really,
- [00:25:02.130]really hard and different than what you experienced.
- [00:25:05.190]The CAST Center can help you with all of those issues,
- [00:25:08.130]whether it's finding tutoring, time management,
- [00:25:11.490]just trying to figure out how to be successful.
- [00:25:13.410]The CAST Center's there for you.
- [00:25:15.630]Counseling and psychological services, also known as CAPS,
- [00:25:19.380]is a free service to our students.
- [00:25:22.260]You get free visits with licensed counselors and I really
- [00:25:26.130]encourage you to go there, again,
- [00:25:28.410]before you feel like you're in crisis.
- [00:25:30.600]Go when you feel like, I need a little bit of help.
- [00:25:33.330]CAPS is there.
- [00:25:34.710]CAPS is also bound by confidentiality and so you can feel
- [00:25:39.510]secure going there and talking about
- [00:25:41.100]whatever is going on with you.
- [00:25:43.260]Services for Students with Disabilities, SSD Office,
- [00:25:48.090]is a place to go if you've had
- [00:25:49.710]accommodations in high school for your classroom success.
- [00:25:54.150]Those don't automatically come to the university,
- [00:25:56.340]so you'll wanna take those accommodations that you had in
- [00:25:58.890]high school to the SSD Office
- [00:26:00.740]so that you can get those in place for college.
- [00:26:03.240]If you never had accommodations before,
- [00:26:05.040]but you're thinking maybe you could use some help,
- [00:26:07.680]SSD Office is a great place to start.
- [00:26:10.560]The University Health Center,
- [00:26:11.910]it's run by the University of Nebraska Medical Center
- [00:26:15.120]and it's just a great service that we have on students
- [00:26:18.360]that you can get vaccines,
- [00:26:20.220]you can see a doctor for basic illnesses,
- [00:26:24.090]you can get your prescriptions filled.
- [00:26:26.550]The Student Health Center really has a lot of great support
- [00:26:29.130]for students right here on campus.
- [00:26:32.996]Big Red Resilience and Wellbeing is located in the same
- [00:26:36.930]building as CAPS and the University Health Center and is the
- [00:26:40.470]hub for all things related to your wellbeing.
- [00:26:44.010]They also are the home to the Husker Pantry,
- [00:26:46.860]which is a place you can get free hygiene and free food
- [00:26:50.370]products while you're a student here at the university.
- [00:26:53.730]They have an easy online order form where you can pick what
- [00:26:56.730]you need or want and then run by
- [00:26:58.980]their office and pick it up.
- [00:27:01.620]The Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services,
- [00:27:04.830]OASIS, the Women's Center, the LGBTQA+ Center,
- [00:27:08.790]and the Military and Veterans Center
- [00:27:10.560]are all physical locations that you can go to find support,
- [00:27:14.520]find friends, find mentors, a place to study,
- [00:27:19.230]get all kinds of resources.
- [00:27:21.150]So I encourage you to reach out and find a place that you
- [00:27:23.940]feel comfortable being you
- [00:27:26.340]and getting the support that you need.
- [00:27:32.250]In addition to this college session
- [00:27:33.990]and new student enrollment,
- [00:27:35.610]we want you to really get started on the right foot,
- [00:27:38.790]and so we have a course called CPA 30,
- [00:27:41.670]which is known as Start Smart,
- [00:27:43.980]which is a zero-credit course
- [00:27:45.600]that you'll all be taking for pass/no pass.
- [00:27:49.080]What you need to know about that is zero-credit hours means
- [00:27:52.800]you don't have to pay for the course,
- [00:27:54.750]but it is a required class for all Hixson-Lied students,
- [00:27:57.570]so you do have to take it.
- [00:27:59.550]It's a self-paced course that
- [00:28:02.985]takes about two or three hours to complete.
- [00:28:05.910]It will open up for you in early August and you'll have
- [00:28:08.940]until the second week of classes to finish.
- [00:28:12.120]This class is gonna help you understand university
- [00:28:14.670]resources more in depth, how to meet with your advisor,
- [00:28:18.540]understanding how to read course syllabi,
- [00:28:21.330]and the importance of attendance in college,
- [00:28:23.970]time management basics for college
- [00:28:26.730]because it's a little different than high school,
- [00:28:29.100]how to build successful relationships both with peers and
- [00:28:32.580]with your faculty and staff on campus,
- [00:28:35.040]general goal setting, and how to communicate professionally.
- [00:28:38.670]And those are just a few of the topics
- [00:28:40.320]covered in the course.
- [00:28:41.640]You'll be getting more information about this course as you
- [00:28:45.540]enroll with your advisor and then as the summer goes along.
- [00:28:52.260]So you may be wondering,
- [00:28:53.400]how are you gonna keep track of all
- [00:28:54.990]of this information that you've heard both in this session
- [00:28:57.870]and other orientation sessions?
- [00:29:00.810]My.unl.edu website is gonna be your home base
- [00:29:05.250]for everything you need as a student.
- [00:29:07.950]You can see on the screen
- [00:29:09.300]a sample of what the website looks like.
- [00:29:11.940]I wanna point out a few of the
- [00:29:13.290]important boxes that you'll need to be successful.
- [00:29:17.130]On the top, the gray box that says Canvas,
- [00:29:20.790]anytime a professor says upload your assignment online,
- [00:29:25.050]or the syllabus is online,
- [00:29:27.150]or make sure you chat with your friends online,
- [00:29:31.080]that's gonna be through the Canvas portal.
- [00:29:33.150]You'll have a section for
- [00:29:35.550]all of your classes within the Canvas portal.
- [00:29:37.830]It's a great way to communicate with your peers,
- [00:29:39.870]to know what you need for course,
- [00:29:42.420]especially if you're taking online classes,
- [00:29:44.310]you'll definitely be using Canvas.
- [00:29:46.830]Right below that in the kind of
- [00:29:48.270]orangeish-colored box is MyRED.
- [00:29:50.880]We mentioned MyRED earlier as a place for FERPA,
- [00:29:54.360]so if you wanna give access
- [00:29:55.770]to anybody for your privacy information,
- [00:29:59.640]that's through MyRED.
- [00:30:00.930]That's also where you'll update your address to your local
- [00:30:04.050]campus address and your phone number,
- [00:30:05.820]that's where you can look at your grades.
- [00:30:07.770]Any of the business of the university
- [00:30:09.720]will be found in MyRED.
- [00:30:12.060]Right below that is the Student Success Hub.
- [00:30:15.150]This is the place where you can find your advisor and the
- [00:30:18.360]other parts of your success team, like Sarah Troupe,
- [00:30:21.630]who's in my office with me.
- [00:30:23.760]You can make appointments with those folks,
- [00:30:25.560]you can look at what they recommended for you to take,
- [00:30:29.760]you can share notes through the Student Success Hub.
- [00:30:32.370]So you'll definitely wanna check that out.
- [00:30:35.190]Over to the left in the yellow box is your campus email.
- [00:30:39.210]You'll have access to that.
- [00:30:41.490]It will be @huskers.unl.edu
- [00:30:45.480]and you'll wanna make sure that you check that daily.
- [00:30:48.240]If you have another email account that you like to use,
- [00:30:50.820]you can have your Huskers email account forwarded to that
- [00:30:54.150]so you make sure you don't miss any important information.
- [00:30:57.180]That's the primary way the university will be communicating
- [00:31:00.030]with you from everything from scholarships and financial aid
- [00:31:03.450]office to your faculty
- [00:31:05.218]will be using the Huskers email account.
- [00:31:09.090]Over to the left in the green box is the Handshake,
- [00:31:12.030]which is the portal for career services.
- [00:31:14.040]You can find campus jobs, internships, jobs after college.
- [00:31:19.020]That's a really great tool for you to connect,
- [00:31:21.090]again, with career services.
- [00:31:23.010]You'll see boxes for the library, Nvolve-U,
- [00:31:25.830]the pink box is for student organizations,
- [00:31:28.794]MyWorld is about studying abroad.
- [00:31:31.290]So there's all kinds of resources
- [00:31:32.910]just right here at your fingertips at my.unl.edu.
- [00:31:39.360]Within the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts,
- [00:31:42.690]you'll find out that there's lots
- [00:31:45.360]of different ways to get involved.
- [00:31:48.090]We have a ton of student organizations
- [00:31:50.670]in every one of our schools.
- [00:31:53.670]There are a lot of ensembles that you can join,
- [00:31:56.100]both vocal and instrumental.
- [00:31:58.080]Some are more rigorous and have
- [00:32:00.420]a more competitive audition process,
- [00:32:02.730]but a lot of students in our ensembles
- [00:32:05.160]are not formally a part of our college,
- [00:32:07.830]so it's a great way to meet lots of people
- [00:32:09.510]from all over campus.
- [00:32:11.430]There are faculty-led study abroad programs.
- [00:32:14.220]We have a student advisory board that meets monthly to talk
- [00:32:17.640]about what's going on in the college.
- [00:32:19.860]We have really neat affiliate organizations
- [00:32:22.650]around town that we are connected with,
- [00:32:24.960]like the Lied Center for Performing Arts
- [00:32:26.880]where you can get discounted tickets
- [00:32:29.460]as a student on campus in our college,
- [00:32:32.400]the Sheldon Museum of Art, which is free,
- [00:32:34.440]and right next door to my building,
- [00:32:36.540]the Mary Riempa Ross Media Arta Center,
- [00:32:39.300]the Nebraska Rep Theater.
- [00:32:41.670]So definitely look at ways to be involved and to see great
- [00:32:44.700]performances and shows at these different venues.
- [00:32:49.050]And finally,
- [00:32:49.883]we have visiting artists and scholared lectures.
- [00:32:52.766]Thanks to the Hixson-Lied Foundation,
- [00:32:56.010]we're able to bring rock stars
- [00:32:58.380]in all fields to our college to do master classes,
- [00:33:02.970]do gallery exhibits so that you get the best of everything
- [00:33:07.380]here in your degree program.
- [00:33:11.640]Finally,
- [00:33:12.473]I wanna share just a few overarching keys to success that we
- [00:33:15.750]think are important for our students.
- [00:33:17.850]I already mentioned this, but it's worth saying again,
- [00:33:20.490]make sure you check your Huskers email every day.
- [00:33:24.242]Again, it will be where we communicate the important things,
- [00:33:27.810]but also,
- [00:33:28.800]you'll find out if there's free pizza somewhere or
- [00:33:31.680]a cool event that you wanna take advantage of.
- [00:33:34.890]Speaking of opportunities, check out everything,
- [00:33:38.580]try new things,
- [00:33:40.140]challenge yourself to be a part of at least one club or
- [00:33:43.530]organization in your first semester.
- [00:33:46.470]It can be in our college or maybe not
- [00:33:48.480]and it's just a passion area that you have.
- [00:33:50.850]It's a great way to meet friends
- [00:33:52.260]and help you have a well-rounded experience.
- [00:33:54.780]And finally, don't be afraid to ask for help.
- [00:33:58.320]Like I said earlier,
- [00:33:59.430]the only bad question is the one that you don't ask.
- [00:34:02.610]There are so many people here on campus that want to see you
- [00:34:05.430]be successful, so take advantage of that.
- [00:34:08.460]We've all been around,
- [00:34:09.660]we've all been students ourselves
- [00:34:12.330]and so we're used to the struggles
- [00:34:14.430]that you probably will encounter.
- [00:34:20.610]Please connect with us.
- [00:34:22.029]I have our social media links there on the screen.
- [00:34:25.770]Again, the Student Success Center.
- [00:34:27.713]You can always email me or just email
- [00:34:30.275]unlarts.success@unl.edu
- [00:34:33.240]and you'll see my phone number there.
- [00:34:35.280]We can't wait to have you on campus this fall so we can get
- [00:34:39.660]to know you a little bit better and see you shine as a
- [00:34:43.200]future student at UNL.
