- [00:00:20.520]Hello, my name's AnnMarie Gottner and this presentation
- [00:00:23.940]is for Summer 2023 for new student enrollment.
- [00:00:27.630]This is the college session for the College of Education
- [00:00:30.600]and Human Sciences for both students,
- [00:00:32.670]and parents, or their guests.
- [00:00:34.710]My name is AnnMarie Gottner and I'm the Senior Director
- [00:00:37.260]of Student Services in the College
- [00:00:38.670]of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:00:40.980]What that means is I get to support
- [00:00:42.630]our students in lots of really great ways
- [00:00:45.060]from helping students become recruited
- [00:00:47.520]to the College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:00:50.310]I support our academic advisors who will support
- [00:00:52.680]our students throughout their degree programs.
- [00:00:55.050]And then, I also work with our career coaches
- [00:00:58.260]to support our students as they're trying
- [00:00:59.970]to gain experiences related to their degrees,
- [00:01:03.180]and look for jobs as they start to complete their degrees.
- [00:01:07.500]I'm just one of many people in the College of Education
- [00:01:10.140]and Human Sciences who are here to make sure you,
- [00:01:13.560]as a future student with us, or the loved one
- [00:01:16.890]of a student has a really great experience
- [00:01:18.870]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:01:20.430]and the College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:01:23.430]A little bit about the college.
- [00:01:25.200]We are one of eight academic colleges at the university.
- [00:01:28.950]We have about 2600 undergraduate students studying
- [00:01:32.734]with us at any time.
- [00:01:35.070]Our college actually has seven departments,
- [00:01:37.740]but only five of our departments
- [00:01:39.240]offer undergraduate degree programs.
- [00:01:41.910]And we have about 30 different areas
- [00:01:44.220]that we have students that study,
- [00:01:46.200]and earn their degrees with us.
- [00:01:48.660]Our departments are in the area of textiles,
- [00:01:51.780]nutrition, teaching, child, youth and family studies,
- [00:01:56.760]and in the area of special education
- [00:01:58.530]and communication disorders.
- [00:02:00.990]Along with being a diverse college
- [00:02:03.060]made up of unique departments, we are a college
- [00:02:05.970]that is located on three different campuses.
- [00:02:10.020]This here is a picture of City Campus
- [00:02:12.300]that most of our people who come
- [00:02:13.910]to the university are familiar with,
- [00:02:16.470]but about 10 to 12 blocks away from City Campus
- [00:02:19.170]is East Campus and East Campus is the academic home
- [00:02:22.620]to our nutrition program, special education
- [00:02:25.080]and communications disorders, and our textiles program.
- [00:02:29.250]We also have some courses and opportunities
- [00:02:32.460]for students on Innovation Campus,
- [00:02:34.050]which is just about four blocks from City Campus.
- [00:02:37.380]City Campus is very walkable.
- [00:02:40.050]East Campus and heading down to Innovation Campus,
- [00:02:42.570]students will often take a bus
- [00:02:43.860]that runs in between all three campuses.
- [00:02:47.400]Our majors while they might seem
- [00:02:50.130]a little diverse when you look at the topics
- [00:02:52.410]I said from anything from textiles to teaching,
- [00:02:55.650]or nutrition to hospitality, but all of our majors
- [00:02:59.220]have really clear career focus outcomes related
- [00:03:03.480]to those programs that will help students get ready
- [00:03:06.540]for the career they wanna go into.
- [00:03:08.850]And a number of our degree programs
- [00:03:10.380]actually prepare students to go on to graduate,
- [00:03:12.630]or professional school, if that is their goal.
- [00:03:15.840]Our college is all about hands-on experiences,
- [00:03:18.810]and so students will have those in a variety of ways
- [00:03:21.780]throughout their degree program and not just
- [00:03:24.450]at the end of their degree program,
- [00:03:26.460]but actually early on in their degree program.
- [00:03:28.650]So you can make sure that you're in the right foot program
- [00:03:31.230]to go into the field of work that you want to actually go
- [00:03:34.350]into and you know you're gonna enjoy,
- [00:03:35.910]and really thrive in that area.
- [00:03:39.000]While we do have 2600 undergraduates,
- [00:03:41.370]and that might feel big to some folks,
- [00:03:43.110]again, I do like to say we're a medium-sized college.
- [00:03:46.080]The freshman class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:03:48.360]is, usually, about 4,500 freshmen.
- [00:03:51.720]And in the College of Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:03:54.180]we usually have about 400 to 450 first year students.
- [00:03:58.380]And so, don't let this feel too big for you
- [00:04:00.840]because once you get into the college,
- [00:04:02.700]and you get into your department, and your major,
- [00:04:05.130]the university just continues to feel smaller and smaller,
- [00:04:08.010]and you have a really strong community.
- [00:04:11.100]So I wanna tell you a little bit about those degrees
- [00:04:13.260]our students are going to be earning.
- [00:04:15.150]So all of the degrees at the University
- [00:04:17.700]of Nebraska-Lincoln are usually 120 credit hours.
- [00:04:21.630]A credit hour is the actual measurement
- [00:04:23.253]of instruction time you have with a professor.
- [00:04:26.340]So if you're in a three credit hour nutrition class,
- [00:04:29.460]you'll meet with that professor three times
- [00:04:31.830]a week for an hour, two times a week for an hour and a half,
- [00:04:35.520]or maybe in one three hour block.
- [00:04:38.190]Or if it's an online class, you might have three hours
- [00:04:41.070]of active instruction provided to you
- [00:04:43.830]as part of that online class from the instructor.
- [00:04:47.130]So you take all those courses,
- [00:04:48.870]those credits that you're earning,
- [00:04:50.640]and you have to earn 120 credit hours to earn your degree.
- [00:04:54.510]It's just not any 120 credit hours.
- [00:04:56.460]There's specific ones, so I wanna talk
- [00:04:58.260]to you about those degree components.
- [00:05:01.350]We have General Education that's kind of
- [00:05:03.660]the foundation of everyone's degree.
- [00:05:05.820]So if you're in our college, or architecture,
- [00:05:08.610]or arts and sciences,
- [00:05:10.350]everyone's gonna have General Education.
- [00:05:12.630]At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:05:14.400]we call General Education ACE,
- [00:05:16.230]Achievement Centered Education.
- [00:05:18.180]There are 10 courses, or 30 credit hours of outcomes
- [00:05:22.320]that we wanna make sure every student has
- [00:05:24.180]to have a well-rounded education
- [00:05:26.370]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:05:28.530]Some of those ACE classes you'll take in your freshman year,
- [00:05:31.620]and some of those ACE classes
- [00:05:32.910]you'll take in your senior year.
- [00:05:34.890]I really like that ACE is integrated
- [00:05:36.750]across your four years at the university.
- [00:05:39.090]That means you also have time in your first semester
- [00:05:41.610]for those major specific courses.
- [00:05:44.190]So in addition to those ACE,
- [00:05:45.720]talking about major specific courses,
- [00:05:47.910]major specific courses are gonna be related
- [00:05:49.950]to what you want to study specifically
- [00:05:52.470]and most often, are gonna be offered
- [00:05:53.658]by the department that oversees your degree program.
- [00:05:57.960]Some majors might be a narrow major
- [00:06:00.000]of just 30 to 36 credit hours,
- [00:06:02.640]and other majors might be a really broad major
- [00:06:05.430]with lots of credit hours related to the major.
- [00:06:08.910]Depending on how big your major coursework is
- [00:06:12.000]within that 120 credit hours, you could
- [00:06:14.250]have additional degree components to hit
- [00:06:16.170]those 120 hours that you need to earn.
- [00:06:19.260]Some courses will be called supporting courses.
- [00:06:22.470]So if you are going to be a science-based major,
- [00:06:28.140]you might have some supporting courses
- [00:06:30.140]in the area of math, or statistics.
- [00:06:32.940]We have some classes that we call selectives
- [00:06:35.880]and those are major specific classes
- [00:06:39.120]where you get choices between which courses feel
- [00:06:41.850]like the right fit for you depending on
- [00:06:43.830]if you wanna go into PT school,
- [00:06:46.110]or if you want to manage a community YMCA facility.
- [00:06:50.940]So students will have some choices with those selectives.
- [00:06:54.330]Some of our majors are gonna require a minor.
- [00:06:56.820]For example, if you are a hospitality student,
- [00:06:59.460]you'll earn a Leadership minor.
- [00:07:01.530]If you are a communication sciences and disorders student,
- [00:07:04.500]and you're interested in a speech pathology pathway,
- [00:07:07.650]you'll earn an Education Studies minor.
- [00:07:10.110]Not all majors require a specific minor,
- [00:07:13.050]but some students, even if you're not required
- [00:07:15.510]to take a minor, will decide to add a minor to then kind
- [00:07:19.140]of collect classes that make sense together
- [00:07:21.630]to market yourself related to your major,
- [00:07:24.600]related to what you wanna do professionally and to again,
- [00:07:28.140]continue to earn those credit hours to earn your degree.
- [00:07:31.470]And then, the last grouping of classes
- [00:07:32.763]that any student would have would be electives,
- [00:07:34.980]and those are just those free classes of anything you want
- [00:07:38.370]to take that you're interested in that can count
- [00:07:40.530]towards those hours you need to reach towards graduation.
- [00:07:44.280]Now in our college, we do have two degree programs
- [00:07:47.550]that are above the 120 credit hours.
- [00:07:51.660]Our Elementary Education and Early Childhood degree program,
- [00:07:55.980]as well as our Elementary Education
- [00:07:57.600]and Special Education degree program,
- [00:08:00.210]those are both one program,
- [00:08:03.570]but as a student completes those programs,
- [00:08:06.090]they will actually be recommended
- [00:08:07.320]for two teaching certificates
- [00:08:09.510]to be endorsed in two different areas
- [00:08:11.670]by the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:08:13.920]So we do have permission for those
- [00:08:15.150]to be above the 120 credit hours.
- [00:08:17.430]But those degrees are still really easy for a student
- [00:08:20.460]to graduate within the four academic years.
- [00:08:24.030]On the slide you can see a link to catalog.unl.edu.
- [00:08:28.080]If you click onto that, go to Undergraduate Catalog,
- [00:08:31.830]pick the College of Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:08:34.590]and by the name of your major,
- [00:08:36.180]you can then see a description of your actual major,
- [00:08:39.630]a listing of the courses required for your major,
- [00:08:42.990]and also a snapshot of a four-year plan that could give you
- [00:08:46.110]an idea of which classes you might take when,
- [00:08:48.990]that you are required to take to earn your degree program.
- [00:08:53.130]We want you to start your journey
- [00:08:55.140]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:08:57.120]thinking about the end of your journey,
- [00:08:59.130]and seeing yourself at graduation,
- [00:09:01.650]having your diploma handed to you by our dean,
- [00:09:04.530]Dean Sherry Jones in the College
- [00:09:06.270]of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:09:08.520]So with that, we wanna remind you about
- [00:09:09.821]some things that might be a little basic,
- [00:09:13.020]but we do encourage every student, as you're starting,
- [00:09:16.110]if you are planning on being a full-time student
- [00:09:18.150]to be enrolled as a full-time student.
- [00:09:20.640]Full-time student status refers to
- [00:09:23.340]how many credit hours you're enrolled in.
- [00:09:25.890]And so, to be considered a full-time student,
- [00:09:29.130]you have to be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours,
- [00:09:31.920]and that's important for things that might be
- [00:09:34.410]like financial aid, certain scholarships,
- [00:09:38.850]living on campus, Greek life, being an athlete.
- [00:09:42.960]So full-time student status is important.
- [00:09:45.240]It's at least 12 credit hours.
- [00:09:47.730]And so, for most students, that's gonna be
- [00:09:49.710]about four classes a semester,
- [00:09:51.720]sometimes more classes, sometimes less,
- [00:09:54.060]depending on how many credit hours
- [00:09:56.010]you are enrolled in for each class.
- [00:09:58.650]So we're gonna encourage
- [00:09:59.520]that every student be a full-time student.
- [00:10:01.680]And then, the other thing is you need
- [00:10:03.120]to make good academic standing and maintain
- [00:10:06.690]that good academic standing so you can continue
- [00:10:09.060]to progress through your degree program
- [00:10:11.910]without any challenges.
- [00:10:14.220]Good academic standing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:10:16.860]is measured at a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- [00:10:20.580]So that would be a C average.
- [00:10:22.800]And as long as you have above that 2.0 each semester,
- [00:10:27.090]you will be in good academic standing.
- [00:10:29.880]Now, I know how successful our students are
- [00:10:33.030]and that 2.0 might seem laughable to some folks
- [00:10:36.570]but, again, I'll remind you, we have really strong students.
- [00:10:40.680]Most of our students in our college,
- [00:10:42.660]we have a number of students that will graduate with 4.0s,
- [00:10:46.740]and the average GPA that students are graduating
- [00:10:50.460]from our college with is at least at 3.5,
- [00:10:53.850]sometimes even higher, depending on the semester.
- [00:10:57.240]So we have really strong students in our college,
- [00:10:59.310]but I always do like to remind students and their loved ones
- [00:11:02.310]that a student can struggle as they start college,
- [00:11:06.180]or at some point in their college career.
- [00:11:07.830]And it doesn't mean... one semester of struggling
- [00:11:10.350]doesn't mean that they can't be successful.
- [00:11:13.290]I always share, I was a student
- [00:11:14.910]who was on academic probation in my sophomore year,
- [00:11:18.600]and I still maintained four-year graduation
- [00:11:20.820]and went on to grad school and so, again,
- [00:11:23.460]our goal is if a student has below
- [00:11:25.200]that 2.0 average, we're gonna reach out to them,
- [00:11:28.710]make sure we understand how we can help them reach
- [00:11:31.350]what their academic goals are
- [00:11:33.030]and hopefully, change that situation,
- [00:11:35.460]or those factors, get those addressed right away.
- [00:11:37.800]So in that one semester we can resolve that challenge
- [00:11:41.880]when they're facing a lower grade point average.
- [00:11:45.720]A lot of students and sometimes those who are helping pay
- [00:11:48.690]for college want on time graduation,
- [00:11:51.060]which for most of us means four academic years.
- [00:11:54.000]Now we have some students on scholarships
- [00:11:55.950]that might be here for five years based
- [00:11:58.200]on their scholarships.
- [00:12:00.570]You know, in our college students can...
- [00:12:03.300]All of our degrees are designed for students
- [00:12:05.760]to graduate within the four-year timeframe.
- [00:12:08.730]Most of our students won't need to take summer classes.
- [00:12:11.790]If students are taking summer classes,
- [00:12:14.070]they might be doing that to balance out maybe a semester
- [00:12:16.830]with less credit hours when they first started
- [00:12:19.920]when they were just at full-time,
- [00:12:21.150]but not taking additional credit hours.
- [00:12:23.730]But sometimes summer classes will happen,
- [00:12:25.470]again, maybe more junior, or senior year
- [00:12:28.800]to maintain that on time graduation.
- [00:12:31.530]Now, full-time student status is 12 credit hours each fall,
- [00:12:35.730]but keep in mind trying to earn those 120 credit hours.
- [00:12:38.880]So if you kind of in your mind think about earning 15 hours
- [00:12:42.600]every fall semester, 15 hours every spring semester
- [00:12:46.320]then ideally, you're earning about 30 credit hours
- [00:12:49.140]a year times the four years is 120 credit hours.
- [00:12:53.940]It is more important though, in your first semester
- [00:12:56.760]to have a good solid transition
- [00:12:59.670]with strong grades, and a good academic experience.
- [00:13:02.760]So if you want to start that first semester
- [00:13:04.650]at 12 credit hours, that is just fine.
- [00:13:07.230]We'll have students kind of anywhere between 12 credit hours
- [00:13:10.650]and 16 credit hours for their first semester.
- [00:13:14.580]We are here to support you in the College of Education
- [00:13:17.700]and Human Sciences as you plan for your degree.
- [00:13:21.030]We have great tools that you'll be able to use
- [00:13:23.970]to develop long range plans and tools
- [00:13:27.540]that make it really easy to enroll in classes.
- [00:13:31.110]But your advisor is the real live breathing person
- [00:13:34.020]who will help you with a lot of that.
- [00:13:35.850]So in our college we have an assigned advising model
- [00:13:39.450]with professional advisors.
- [00:13:41.700]What that means is our advisors,
- [00:13:43.740]all they do every day is work with students
- [00:13:46.890]to figure out their coursework that needs to get done,
- [00:13:51.090]the sequence of that, and building those long range plans.
- [00:13:54.330]And then, helping you with course registration.
- [00:13:56.940]And so, you'll have a specific advisor assigned
- [00:13:59.850]to you based on what your major is,
- [00:14:02.520]and then also based on your last name,
- [00:14:04.770]so you'll know who you meet with every time.
- [00:14:06.810]And generally, it's the same person.
- [00:14:08.730]We do have advisors who are cross-trained.
- [00:14:10.770]So if your advisor happens to be out unexpectedly,
- [00:14:14.760]and you need assistance, there's still
- [00:14:16.110]someone there to help you.
- [00:14:17.370]But students really like getting to know their person
- [00:14:19.683]that is there to help them, and work with them one-to-one
- [00:14:23.460]every time you need assistance.
- [00:14:26.820]We do hope that you see your advisor every semester
- [00:14:29.880]at least once to check in about
- [00:14:32.160]how your current classes are going,
- [00:14:33.930]and then to talk about classes for the next semester.
- [00:14:37.260]You can meet with your advisor in person,
- [00:14:40.080]you'll actually be able to schedule
- [00:14:41.820]your advisor on their calendar.
- [00:14:43.440]You'll have access to that and you can choose
- [00:14:46.440]if you wanna have that meeting in person or by Zoom.
- [00:14:50.340]When to see your advisor?
- [00:14:51.390]So obviously, when you're learning about your degree program
- [00:14:54.060]and signing up for classes and developing a long range plan.
- [00:14:57.810]Also, if you're wanting to think about
- [00:14:59.220]how do you wanna customize your degree program.
- [00:15:02.100]Maybe you're trying to figure out
- [00:15:03.300]how you can be really competitive
- [00:15:05.040]for going on to graduate school,
- [00:15:07.470]and you want to know is there
- [00:15:08.850]a certain minor you could add,
- [00:15:10.320]or certain coursework you should consider.
- [00:15:13.560]Also, if you're struggling in a class,
- [00:15:15.450]reach out to your advisor.
- [00:15:16.470]We know all the academic resources to direct you to.
- [00:15:19.500]And if you don't know who else to reach out to,
- [00:15:21.450]you could always just drop your advisor an email,
- [00:15:24.120]or pop into our offices and we're glad
- [00:15:25.800]to try to help you with anything you might be facing,
- [00:15:28.200]especially in your freshman year.
- [00:15:30.960]All of our advisors are located in Henzlik Hall 105.
- [00:15:35.850]So that's located on City Campus and, again,
- [00:15:39.000]students are gonna have access
- [00:15:40.290]to your advisor's schedule on Student Success Hub.
- [00:15:43.350]So you'll actually go to a website and be able to see
- [00:15:46.020]your advisor's calendar and pick out
- [00:15:47.700]your advising appointments once you are here in the fall.
- [00:15:52.350]And then, during some of those busy times
- [00:15:54.360]when we're trying to see a lot of students
- [00:15:55.950]to get people registered for the next semester,
- [00:15:58.290]we have drop-in advising, so you don't even have
- [00:16:00.270]to make an appointment, you can just pop on
- [00:16:02.070]into our offices and your advisor
- [00:16:04.560]will also be listed on MyRed, and so you'll know
- [00:16:07.560]who your specific person is and how to reach them.
- [00:16:11.730]Here if you go to cehs.unl.edu,
- [00:16:15.240]I have the pathway then for you to find out
- [00:16:17.310]who your advisor would be even before you meet with us
- [00:16:20.370]for new student enrollment advising.
- [00:16:22.710]So you could select Student Resources, Academic Advising,
- [00:16:26.430]and then you can find your actual major name on this list.
- [00:16:30.120]And then, you can check to see
- [00:16:32.100]if there's two people advising in that area,
- [00:16:34.380]and then which person you'd be advising with
- [00:16:37.230]based on your last name.
- [00:16:38.700]And if you click on the names then you can get
- [00:16:40.260]all their contact information as well.
- [00:16:43.500]So some of you are participating in orientation
- [00:16:48.450]and then, going through academic advising for NSE.
- [00:16:52.290]And some folks are gonna have the advising piece first,
- [00:16:55.500]and then go through orientation, either way works just fine.
- [00:17:00.630]Advisors have found students who've gone
- [00:17:03.120]through the orientation, through new student enrollment
- [00:17:06.240]sometimes have less questions during
- [00:17:09.510]the academic advising session,
- [00:17:10.980]if they had orientation first, but either one will work.
- [00:17:14.070]So new student enrollment is both that orientation
- [00:17:18.060]that you're gonna go through.
- [00:17:19.320]And then, the actual academic advising.
- [00:17:21.930]So the advising appointment for NSE will be made on MyRed.
- [00:17:26.670]And there are some pre-advising activities
- [00:17:29.700]every student has to do to then get access
- [00:17:33.450]to sign up for your actual advising appointment
- [00:17:36.120]in the summer to pick your classes
- [00:17:38.370]that will start in the fall.
- [00:17:40.770]The first thing you're gonna do
- [00:17:41.820]is an advising inventory on this.
- [00:17:44.190]You're gonna tell us if you have credit,
- [00:17:46.620]that is college level credit from any other school.
- [00:17:49.290]If you've taken credit from University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:17:52.260]Omaha, a community college, university,
- [00:17:55.800]or college in another city, or if you've taken an AP exam,
- [00:17:59.970]you're gonna put all that information
- [00:18:01.410]on that advising inventory.
- [00:18:03.150]You're also gonna tell us some things
- [00:18:04.493]about your study habits and different types of courses,
- [00:18:07.830]and subjects you like, or you struggle with,
- [00:18:10.410]how much you plan on being involved.
- [00:18:12.420]All these different types of questions.
- [00:18:14.280]And some around what you wanna do with your degree.
- [00:18:17.190]That's all information that will help
- [00:18:18.780]your advisor prep for your actual advising appointment.
- [00:18:23.340]The other required pre-advising activity
- [00:18:25.620]will be the math placement exam.
- [00:18:28.440]There are great directions, you should definitely read
- [00:18:30.840]the directions to the math placement exam.
- [00:18:32.550]You should take the practice test.
- [00:18:34.710]And then, we'll have your score
- [00:18:37.230]when we actually do your advising.
- [00:18:39.420]Even if you're in a major where you think,
- [00:18:41.407]"I don't need a lot of math," there are gonna be
- [00:18:44.220]some classes at the university
- [00:18:45.900]that your math placement exam score
- [00:18:48.720]will then dictate different course options,
- [00:18:51.660]based on that test result.
- [00:18:53.130]And so, you do wanna try to do as good on that as you can.
- [00:18:56.760]And then, some majors, if you are planning
- [00:18:59.370]on continuing with a foreign language,
- [00:19:02.700]you will take the the modern language exam as well.
- [00:19:06.630]After you have your pre-advising activities done,
- [00:19:09.390]you will actually pick your appointment time
- [00:19:13.290]for new student enrollment advising.
- [00:19:15.870]And you will be able to, again, select that time in MyRed,
- [00:19:19.980]so you'll pick a day and a time.
- [00:19:21.720]Your advising appointment will be about an hour.
- [00:19:24.870]And in that time you can choose if you wanna have
- [00:19:28.200]that appointment by Zoom with your academic advisor
- [00:19:30.660]that you'll be working with, or in person.
- [00:19:33.180]If it's in person, you'll come to 105 Henzlik,
- [00:19:35.790]and we'll send you lots of information on how to find us.
- [00:19:38.520]And if it's Zoom, that works just as fine.
- [00:19:42.210]If you're coming in person, you don't have
- [00:19:43.890]to bring a laptop, we'll go ahead
- [00:19:45.390]and work with your advisor that you're working with
- [00:19:47.550]to get you signed up for classes that day.
- [00:19:50.010]What is important, whether if you're meeting with us
- [00:19:52.080]by Zoom or in person, is that the student must be able
- [00:19:56.730]to log into MyRed during the advising appointment.
- [00:20:00.390]And so keep in mind sometimes Mom, Dad,
- [00:20:03.330]or someone who's been helping you navigate
- [00:20:05.280]the college process has been the person to do
- [00:20:07.800]the duo piece to authenticate before you log into MyRed.
- [00:20:11.670]We need to make sure that gets switched to the student
- [00:20:13.620]'cause we're gonna need the student to do that
- [00:20:15.690]for that actual advising appointment.
- [00:20:17.940]So in that advising appointment, you're going to go
- [00:20:20.910]over those required pre-advising activities
- [00:20:23.790]with your advisor, and they'll ask
- [00:20:25.980]any questions that they might have.
- [00:20:27.900]They'll describe your degree program to you.
- [00:20:30.090]And then, you'll talk about the first semester classes
- [00:20:33.930]that you should take and then you'll actually build
- [00:20:36.600]your schedule, so it'll be really fun
- [00:20:38.490]in that less than an hour, you'll know exactly
- [00:20:40.680]what you're gonna be taking when the fall semester starts.
- [00:20:44.850]Parents are welcome to come into those Zoom sessions.
- [00:20:48.390]Or if you're in person and a parent wants
- [00:20:50.550]to join that advising session, it's totally up
- [00:20:52.920]to the student and parent.
- [00:20:54.570]We are glad to talk with the parent,
- [00:20:56.670]and hear questions, and feedback from you.
- [00:20:59.550]But we wanna make sure that the student is having space
- [00:21:02.280]to make some of those decisions, and trusting,
- [00:21:04.710]and building that relationship with their advisor as well.
- [00:21:08.341]In addition to advisors, we have so many people
- [00:21:11.280]in the college and at the university
- [00:21:13.320]to help support students, and so on here,
- [00:21:18.120]on this kind of goofy picture where you see kind
- [00:21:20.310]of three different blocks from, I think, Instagram,
- [00:21:23.160]these are actually some of our department chairs.
- [00:21:25.110]So an activity we had in April,
- [00:21:27.660]students were starting to get a little tired.
- [00:21:29.250]We did a chair chase of our department chairs.
- [00:21:32.340]And students found a department chair,
- [00:21:34.350]snapped a picture with them, and they got entered
- [00:21:37.380]into some contests for some free prizes,
- [00:21:39.660]and also got free ice cream from the dairy store.
- [00:21:42.360]So our students really feel comfortable reaching out
- [00:21:45.810]to our faculty, and our department leaders,
- [00:21:47.970]and to our actual dean as well.
- [00:21:50.520]Also, as I mentioned earlier, I get to work
- [00:21:52.560]with our career coaches, and so career coaches
- [00:21:55.680]will come into some of your freshman level classes,
- [00:21:58.380]and some of your upper level classes,
- [00:22:00.510]and talk to you about different ways to get experiences
- [00:22:03.750]as you're starting to prepare for your career.
- [00:22:06.690]And then, an additional layer of support
- [00:22:08.280]we have in the college
- [00:22:09.113]through the executive vice chancellor's office,
- [00:22:11.670]are our team members called Academic Navigators.
- [00:22:15.450]And they're there to help you,
- [00:22:16.950]as you transition to college as well.
- [00:22:21.000]We know that college is definitely a full-time job,
- [00:22:24.690]and you wanna try to have many experiences
- [00:22:27.060]throughout your college going process.
- [00:22:29.730]So a few slides I wanna talk to you
- [00:22:32.100]about different experiences you can have.
- [00:22:34.620]So in our college, this is actually
- [00:22:37.110]a picture of a student I actually know is Sydney.
- [00:22:40.020]I was actually in Greece with her.
- [00:22:41.910]But we were traveling with some of our nutrition faculty,
- [00:22:44.610]looking at the impact and the history
- [00:22:46.470]of the Mediterranean diet and then also,
- [00:22:49.170]the history of cheating in sports.
- [00:22:51.210]And then also meeting with an orthopedic surgeon,
- [00:22:54.780]who was working with athletes from a country.
- [00:22:58.560]We were obviously in Greece,
- [00:23:00.270]you might be able to tell from this.
- [00:23:01.950]So in our college, we really value those experiences
- [00:23:04.650]outside the classroom, education abroad is one of those.
- [00:23:07.770]So our trips are usually a week to three weeks
- [00:23:11.880]over winter break, or over spring break,
- [00:23:14.310]or in early May where then you still have time
- [00:23:16.710]to go home and work or take classes over the summer,
- [00:23:20.460]and earn credit towards your actual degree
- [00:23:23.010]while you're having your education abroad opportunity.
- [00:23:25.830]We have lots of scholarships for students
- [00:23:28.620]for education abroad, we never want money
- [00:23:31.230]to be the reason why a student
- [00:23:32.520]couldn't participate in education abroad.
- [00:23:36.390]We also really encourage students
- [00:23:37.920]to find a way to get involved.
- [00:23:39.990]And so, you're making a big transition
- [00:23:42.540]from high school to college and you might see
- [00:23:44.670]some familiar faces from your high school,
- [00:23:47.490]some of you might not, depending on
- [00:23:49.860]where you're coming from, but you have
- [00:23:51.900]to have fun in college to then have that motivation
- [00:23:55.590]to stay, and do the hard work of being a student.
- [00:24:00.120]And so, we really do encourage students find ways
- [00:24:02.520]to get involved, and so as part of your orientation process
- [00:24:06.180]with new student enrollment, you're gonna hear
- [00:24:07.440]about lots of great ways to get involved.
- [00:24:09.750]I always encourage students to find a way to get involved
- [00:24:11.974]in a student organization related to their major.
- [00:24:15.150]And that way you can get to know other students
- [00:24:17.580]who want to go into the same career,
- [00:24:20.160]or graduate program you might wanna go into.
- [00:24:23.460]You get to have cool opportunities with faculty outside
- [00:24:28.320]of the class setting who maybe advise
- [00:24:30.690]those different student organizations.
- [00:24:32.910]And then, you just get some unique experiences.
- [00:24:35.520]And so, our Student Education Association,
- [00:24:39.150]they'll bring the Nebraska Teacher of the Year.
- [00:24:42.150]We have a nutrition health promotion group
- [00:24:46.110]and they met with different offices
- [00:24:48.420]from the Department of Health and Human Services
- [00:24:51.060]to learn about internships.
- [00:24:52.830]Some of our student groups will be doing volunteer work,
- [00:24:56.760]or fundraisers around a population served by their majors.
- [00:25:00.390]So lots of cool ways to get involved.
- [00:25:03.480]So as I start to wrap up, once a student
- [00:25:07.560]does have their advising appointment done,
- [00:25:10.260]they will have the opportunity
- [00:25:13.170]to activate their Huskers email.
- [00:25:15.960]And so, we need to make sure that students start
- [00:25:18.840]to get in the habit of checking that Husker email
- [00:25:21.270]at least on a weekly basis in the summer.
- [00:25:24.330]Any email your academic advisor sends,
- [00:25:27.480]they will be sending directly to that Huskers email
- [00:25:30.480]once you have your email ready to go.
- [00:25:32.880]So we'll send you directions on how you can do that.
- [00:25:35.130]You can't do it 'til you sign up for classes.
- [00:25:36.900]So if you haven't signed up for classes,
- [00:25:38.250]you're not missing anything yet.
- [00:25:40.950]But as you get here in the fall,
- [00:25:42.750]you'll wanna check that email every day.
- [00:25:45.840]We definitely encourage you to contact
- [00:25:48.450]your advisor, as you need, over the summer.
- [00:25:50.970]So in that one hour advising appointment,
- [00:25:54.600]you will meet with your advisor,
- [00:25:57.090]or an advisor who advises in that same area.
- [00:26:01.440]If we have five students who sign up
- [00:26:03.630]for the same appointment time,
- [00:26:05.130]and all have the same major,
- [00:26:06.720]and are all the same part of the alphabet, last name wise,
- [00:26:10.020]they would be assigned to the same advisor.
- [00:26:11.910]We obviously, don't make one person work
- [00:26:13.740]with five students at one time,
- [00:26:15.900]so we kind of divide, and conquer
- [00:26:17.400]that new student enrollment advising appointment.
- [00:26:19.950]So if you're not working with your specific advisor
- [00:26:22.380]from our college during your advising appointment,
- [00:26:25.140]you're working with one of the advisors in our college.
- [00:26:28.170]And that advisor, along with your assigned advisor
- [00:26:31.560]will follow up with you over the summer.
- [00:26:34.080]When you sign up with classes with us
- [00:26:36.090]during that advising appointment,
- [00:26:37.770]those are classes that are gonna start August 23rd,
- [00:26:40.590]and run through mid-December.
- [00:26:42.720]Students can continue to make changes
- [00:26:44.580]over the summer to their schedule.
- [00:26:46.290]You can do that, but I always ask
- [00:26:48.089]that you would contact your advisor
- [00:26:49.950]to say, "Hey, I made this change.
- [00:26:51.847]"Just wanna make sure I didn't make a mistake."
- [00:26:54.810]You know, our advisors can catch things like,
- [00:26:56.647]"Oh, you don't have the pre-req for that class.
- [00:26:59.227]"That's gonna be really challenging.
- [00:27:00.517]"Let's find a different option."
- [00:27:02.010]Or, "Oh, there's even a better instructor
- [00:27:04.177]"who teaches this in the next semester.
- [00:27:05.887]"So let's hold off on that one for now."
- [00:27:08.160]Or they might say, you know, "Oh, it looks like this class,
- [00:27:11.617]"you're not having enough time
- [00:27:12.517]"to get from point A to point B."
- [00:27:14.130]And so we're just there to help you make sure
- [00:27:15.960]that you have as good of a schedule.
- [00:27:18.360]And the classes that you're taking meet
- [00:27:19.980]all of your requirements in your first semester.
- [00:27:22.710]So you can always reach out to us,
- [00:27:24.300]and let us know how we can help you over the summer.
- [00:27:28.500]To support students in their transition,
- [00:27:30.330]we will have them complete what we call a Start Smart class.
- [00:27:34.890]All the colleges of the University
- [00:27:36.210]of Nebraska-Lincoln have this.
- [00:27:38.010]Most of the colleges will open up
- [00:27:39.510]their Start Smart class August 1st.
- [00:27:41.880]This is a class that's gonna run purely on Canvas,
- [00:27:44.910]which is our online learning management system.
- [00:27:48.000]It is a zero credit hour class,
- [00:27:49.770]so you're not getting charged credit hours
- [00:27:51.810]for it in tuition, but it is on your transcript.
- [00:27:55.680]And so, it is a pass/no pass class.
- [00:27:57.600]So it won't impact grade point average,
- [00:28:00.210]but you definitely wanna have
- [00:28:01.110]a pass in this class, not a no pass.
- [00:28:03.750]Our Start Smart class will open up August 1st.
- [00:28:06.270]And we actually run it through mid-September.
- [00:28:09.060]So the total time to be engaged
- [00:28:11.580]in the class is probably about four hours.
- [00:28:14.820]So most students are gonna have time
- [00:28:16.170]to do that during the summer
- [00:28:17.730]before they join us in mid to late August.
- [00:28:21.300]But again, if you're running into problems
- [00:28:24.030]with that class, and need any assistance
- [00:28:26.040]you'll be able to reach out to actually me
- [00:28:27.990]the instructor of that class.
- [00:28:30.180]First day of classes will be August 23rd.
- [00:28:32.370]So there'll be lots of information
- [00:28:34.260]from New Student Enrollment about Big Red Welcome activities
- [00:28:38.405]leading up to the first day of classes.
- [00:28:40.680]And if you're living on campus,
- [00:28:42.360]or going through the Greek recruitment process,
- [00:28:44.250]there'll be information about that
- [00:28:45.690]before classes start as well.
- [00:28:48.390]I always do like to tell students,
- [00:28:49.920]and their loved ones that that first week of classes,
- [00:28:53.280]if you are struggling in a class, or you're feeling
- [00:28:55.410]like your schedule isn't working how you had hoped it would,
- [00:28:59.490]that's the perfect time to come into your advisor's office.
- [00:29:02.550]We can still make changes to your academic schedule
- [00:29:05.100]for first semester during that first week,
- [00:29:08.100]but we wanna make those changes sooner than later
- [00:29:10.770]to make sure that you're not getting
- [00:29:13.380]behind in the class that you've just started.
- [00:29:18.270]Again, I wanna put up here, my contact information for you.
- [00:29:22.560]You're welcome to email me directly
- [00:29:24.300]with any questions annmarie@unl.edu.
- [00:29:28.350]Also on here, 402-472-8624 is our office phone.
- [00:29:35.700]You could call that and ask to talk to me directly
- [00:29:38.700]or your assigned advisor, or someone else on our team.
- [00:29:43.710]And we are really excited that you're gonna be joining us
- [00:29:46.560]as part of our freshman class, and can't wait to see you
- [00:29:50.310]for your advising appointment.
- [00:29:52.440]Thanks so much, and have a great day.
