- [00:00:12.000]Good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today.
- [00:00:17.790]Today's presentation will be about fraternity life
- [00:00:20.670]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:23.280]Matthew Ford is currently the Interfraternity Council,
- [00:00:26.070]or IFC, Director of Recruitment,
- [00:00:29.220]and we'll be taking you through this process.
- [00:00:33.120]Fraternities at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:34.860]are located in three governing councils:
- [00:00:37.350]the Multicultural Greek Council,
- [00:00:39.240]the National Pan-Hellenic Council,
- [00:00:41.280]and the Interfraternity Council.
- [00:00:43.830]The majority of our fraternities
- [00:00:45.150]lie within the Interfraternity Council
- [00:00:46.980]or what we consider IFC,
- [00:00:49.020]but we do want to make you aware
- [00:00:50.550]that we do have other options
- [00:00:51.870]for fraternities here on our campus.
- [00:00:54.870]The Multicultural Greek Council host fraternities
- [00:00:58.410]that identify with Latino, Latinx,
- [00:01:02.850]as well as an Asian interest group,
- [00:01:06.210]our National Pan-Hellenic Council, or NPHC,
- [00:01:09.000]as our Black Greek-letter organizations.
- [00:01:13.620]If you would like to know more information about chapters
- [00:01:16.770]that are located within these councils,
- [00:01:19.920]please download and watch the Multicultural
- [00:01:28.950]and NPHC fraternities and sororities of color presentation.
- [00:01:35.220]There, they will give you more information
- [00:01:36.720]about how to join these organizations,
- [00:01:40.470]when they do recruitment,
- [00:01:42.240]and the benefits of joining.
- [00:01:46.290]As we begin,
- [00:01:47.123]I wanted to begin with the tenets of fraternity life,
- [00:01:49.080]and this is fraternity life
- [00:01:50.220]across all of our governing councils.
- [00:01:52.920]It all begins with academics.
- [00:01:54.660]You are here for a reason,
- [00:01:56.160]and that reason is to get your grades.
- [00:01:58.740]We hope that you will, in time,
- [00:02:01.740]graduate from the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:02:04.320]and our grades are a bragging point in which to do this.
- [00:02:08.280]Our all Greek male GPA is a 3.265.
- [00:02:12.420]This was for the fall 2022 semester,
- [00:02:14.820]which is two points higher than the non-Greek average.
- [00:02:18.930]Our chapters take academics very seriously.
- [00:02:21.900]From study hours to tutoring to mentorship,
- [00:02:25.800]we believe that many of our fraternities
- [00:02:27.690]will offer you guidance and support
- [00:02:30.210]when it comes to your academics.
- [00:02:32.940]Leadership and involvement is yet another tenet,
- [00:02:35.700]and leadership and involvement is the core
- [00:02:37.680]of all of our fraternities.
- [00:02:41.083]What you get out of our fraternity experience
- [00:02:42.960]is what you put in,
- [00:02:44.220]and we feel that the leadership can be provided
- [00:02:46.350]by our organizations.
- [00:02:49.800]We feel that if you take an officer position,
- [00:02:52.710]if you are a committee chair,
- [00:02:54.270]if you look to joining one of our governing councils
- [00:02:56.670]as an officer, as a committee chair,
- [00:02:59.130]or even use your fraternity as a launch point
- [00:03:02.370]to other organizations on campus,
- [00:03:05.100]the foundation of leadership
- [00:03:06.690]and some of the things that you will learn
- [00:03:08.280]that you can take with you into the real world
- [00:03:10.770]will be because of what you've learned in your fraternity.
- [00:03:15.540]Philanthropy, advocacy, and service,
- [00:03:18.630]I wanna talk about all three.
- [00:03:20.760]This is one of the other core reasons why we are here.
- [00:03:24.900]Philanthropy.
- [00:03:25.920]Philanthropy is the idea that you raise money
- [00:03:27.930]for a cause or an interest.
- [00:03:33.990]For instance,
- [00:03:34.920]the Interfraternity Council right now
- [00:03:36.720]has teamed up with a local hospital, Bryan Health,
- [00:03:40.800]to raise $150,000 in order to help build
- [00:03:44.400]its new cancer treatment center.
- [00:03:47.040]It was completed this May
- [00:03:49.260]and the gentleman will celebrate the ribbon cutting
- [00:03:52.140]sometime next fall.
- [00:03:55.110]When it comes to service,
- [00:03:56.820]we take a look at what we can do to get our hands dirty.
- [00:04:00.180]It's not about just raising money,
- [00:04:01.710]but it's actually volunteering within the community,
- [00:04:05.040]and a way we do that is through UNL's Big Event.
- [00:04:08.100]It's the idea that you give to the,
- [00:04:10.440]or you give to the city that host its university.
- [00:04:13.500]And this event that happens every spring,
- [00:04:15.870]make sure that our members are out there
- [00:04:17.460]working at a food bank, the Humane Society,
- [00:04:20.310]helping individuals who may not have been able
- [00:04:22.620]to clean up their lawns but just need that extra hand.
- [00:04:24.870]We will be out in the community to do that.
- [00:04:27.930]And the last piece of this is advocacy,
- [00:04:30.360]and that is, that's great we have a cause,
- [00:04:32.700]that's great we raised money for an interest,
- [00:04:34.860]but what we don't do is we need to be able to take time
- [00:04:38.340]to educate individuals about what we believe in
- [00:04:41.220]and why we are doing this.
- [00:04:42.960]A great example of this is every November,
- [00:04:45.810]many of our fraternities sponsor the November challenge
- [00:04:50.280]where we will grow beards, mustaches, and things like that
- [00:04:53.010]to bring awareness and education to the community
- [00:04:55.590]about men's wellness and cancer awareness,
- [00:04:58.350]specifically prostate cancer.
- [00:05:01.890]The next tenet is inclusive excellence.
- [00:05:04.500]We feel that in our community, you will find a home here.
- [00:05:09.180]Doesn't matter what religion you are,
- [00:05:10.860]how you identify your cultural background,
- [00:05:13.800]there is a home for you in the fraternity community
- [00:05:16.050]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:05:18.510]Everybody is welcome.
- [00:05:20.490]If you have a question, please give us a call.
- [00:05:22.470]We would love to chat with you about your options.
- [00:05:25.950]And the last piece is brotherhood.
- [00:05:28.380]This is the idea of friendship plus accountability.
- [00:05:33.420]Friendship plus accountability equals brotherhood,
- [00:05:35.790]meaning if you screw up, someone's gonna call you out on it,
- [00:05:39.930]you don't get your grades,
- [00:05:41.160]someone's gonna be there to tell you to go to class,
- [00:05:44.220]who work with you to study a little bit harder.
- [00:05:47.040]This isn't the idea that you get to goof off.
- [00:05:49.170]People laugh it off,
- [00:05:50.130]and you can continue on your way
- [00:05:51.330]without being called out for your antics.
- [00:05:54.210]On the same token,
- [00:05:55.530]brotherhood is there to celebrate your victories.
- [00:05:57.690]They're there when you get an internship,
- [00:05:59.820]you graduate, you get your first job.
- [00:06:03.180]That is what the brotherhood means
- [00:06:04.800]in many of our fraternity communities
- [00:06:06.360]and within many of our fraternity chapters.
- [00:06:11.610]So let's talk about summer recruitment events.
- [00:06:13.800]For the Interfraternity Council,
- [00:06:15.060]our summer recruitment events are posted on our website.
- [00:06:18.840]You can see the website at the lower corner of the slide.
- [00:06:23.250]These events kick off our summer recruitment period
- [00:06:28.740]and wanna point out
- [00:06:29.573]that summer is the primary recruitment period
- [00:06:31.260]for many of our organizations.
- [00:06:33.270]This will be the only time all chapters will be presenting
- [00:06:36.030]or participating in helping you find your home.
- [00:06:40.560]It is definitely an informal process.
- [00:06:42.360]It's the idea that you will have mutually agreed upon events
- [00:06:45.300]that you would go to
- [00:06:46.740]and that's a chapter invite you to.
- [00:06:48.840]There's no reason for you not to have a mutual agreement.
- [00:06:51.480]Meaning, if you don't feel comfortable
- [00:06:52.710]going to this chapter house,
- [00:06:53.700]you don't have to go.
- [00:06:57.240]The idea that students,
- [00:07:01.290]when it comes to that mutual contact,
- [00:07:02.910]we wanna point out that students and as well as chapters
- [00:07:05.400]will have the contact information.
- [00:07:07.650]If you register for recruitment,
- [00:07:08.790]which we'll talk about here in a little bit,
- [00:07:10.530]you'll receive the information for chapters
- [00:07:12.330]who are recruiting, and vice versa.
- [00:07:14.730]The chapters will receive your information.
- [00:07:17.640]We wanna make sure that you have a number of events
- [00:07:19.710]that you can actually go to.
- [00:07:21.060]And in 2022, we had over 120 open events
- [00:07:24.570]and we're hoping for the same in 2023.
- [00:07:33.300]So how to register for recruitment?
- [00:07:34.980]The best way to register recruitment
- [00:07:36.330]is to use either the website that you see on this page
- [00:07:39.810]or take your phone out and snap this QR code,
- [00:07:42.690]which will take you directly
- [00:07:43.710]to the online registration form.
- [00:07:49.590]The registration form is basic information.
- [00:07:51.720]We're gonna ask some of this things
- [00:07:55.200]that we need to know about you
- [00:07:56.400]to help kick off conversations
- [00:07:57.840]so that you guys can find common connection
- [00:07:59.580]within some of our fraternity chapters.
- [00:08:01.980]We're gonna ask demographic information.
- [00:08:03.510]We're gonna ask for that contact information,
- [00:08:05.130]how to get ahold of you,
- [00:08:06.120]and the best way to get ahold of you.
- [00:08:08.100]We're gonna find out if you're a Legacy or not
- [00:08:09.810]or if you have Greek ties with some of our organizations,
- [00:08:13.740]or not even having organizations but you do have an idea
- [00:08:16.380]of what fraternity and sorority life is.
- [00:08:18.960]We're gonna talk a little bit about the recruitment rules.
- [00:08:20.610]We wanna make sure that you know
- [00:08:22.410]that there are certain set of expectations
- [00:08:24.330]that when we have recruitment events
- [00:08:25.830]that the chapter will follow as well as you.
- [00:08:29.250]We talk a lot about what you did in high school
- [00:08:31.140]or what you did before coming to the university.
- [00:08:33.030]We want to know your leadership roles,
- [00:08:34.560]your activities and involvement,
- [00:08:36.330]jobs that you may have,
- [00:08:37.770]youth groups that you may have been a part of,
- [00:08:39.930]community service or philanthropy events
- [00:08:41.460]that you've already done before getting to college
- [00:08:44.130]and there'll be an opportunity for you to brag about
- [00:08:45.990]who you are when you fill out this registration.
- [00:08:49.650]We also have a session about college experience.
- [00:08:52.770]This idea that participation
- [00:08:55.080]in maybe a community college coursework
- [00:09:01.320]while you are still in high school,
- [00:09:03.450]that you may be a transfer student
- [00:09:04.920]and you already got college credits coming in,
- [00:09:06.930]or that you may already be part of a UNL activity,
- [00:09:10.680]that you're going to be in the marching band,
- [00:09:12.090]you might be playing a sport,
- [00:09:13.260]or you're a William H. Thompson Scholar,
- [00:09:14.940]those types of things.
- [00:09:16.110]We wanna know what those experiences are going in
- [00:09:18.000]because that helps our students make a better gauge
- [00:09:22.380]of who they are recruiting when they go into it.
- [00:09:25.290]And then last but not least, on the backside,
- [00:09:26.700]we will ask for some parent and guardian information
- [00:09:28.620]so we can keep your parents or guardians informed
- [00:09:31.290]about the process, what Greek life is like,
- [00:09:33.690]and what the year looks like for your student.
- [00:09:38.250]Wanna talk a little bit about the bid process.
- [00:09:40.110]The bid process is the idea
- [00:09:41.490]that you will join an organization
- [00:09:43.620]or receive an invitation for joining
- [00:09:46.590]and a couple of phases that there are,
- [00:09:48.720]and you can see them there.
- [00:09:50.130]Before receiving a bid,
- [00:09:51.480]we wanna make sure you attend events,
- [00:09:52.980]and the idea about this
- [00:09:53.940]is you may want to join the first chapter that you visit,
- [00:09:56.970]but man we want you to explore
- [00:09:58.320]three to four different other choices of fraternities
- [00:10:01.740]that we have here on campus just to make sure.
- [00:10:04.920]We've got 23 different options in the IFC,
- [00:10:07.920]five options in the NPHC,
- [00:10:09.747]and three options in our MGC Councils
- [00:10:12.450]and all of them are good places,
- [00:10:13.830]and we wanna make sure that when you join this organization,
- [00:10:16.290]that you join the right one.
- [00:10:18.810]When you receive in a bid,
- [00:10:20.250]what this means is it's an invitation
- [00:10:21.990]for you to join the chapter,
- [00:10:24.120]that the chapter will invite you to become
- [00:10:26.580]a potential new member
- [00:10:28.110]or a new member within the organization.
- [00:10:30.780]When you receive this invitation or bid,
- [00:10:33.270]you have three options:
- [00:10:34.830]you can accept, you can hold, and you can decline.
- [00:10:39.030]If you accept the bid from the chapter or the invitation,
- [00:10:41.940]your recruitment process is over
- [00:10:43.470]and you will now be considered a new member
- [00:10:45.930]of that organization.
- [00:10:48.120]You can hold the organization,
- [00:10:50.130]maybe you are recruiting three or four different chapters
- [00:10:52.410]and you have other options on the table.
- [00:10:54.750]You can let the chapter know that
- [00:10:56.010]thank you for the invitation,
- [00:10:57.480]you want to hold and be generous with their time,
- [00:11:00.600]as well as yours,
- [00:11:01.830]giving them at least some idea when you can make the answer,
- [00:11:05.910]either accept or decline,
- [00:11:07.980]with the bid that you've been given.
- [00:11:10.470]Try not to draw it out more than a couple of weeks
- [00:11:12.450]because chapters are continuously recruiting,
- [00:11:15.600]and they need to know the answer
- [00:11:16.740]because they're holding a spot for you.
- [00:11:20.610]Signing the bid.
- [00:11:21.750]Once you've accepted that membership,
- [00:11:23.820]some of them will actually have you sign
- [00:11:26.400]a fraternity bid card,
- [00:11:28.320]and then on the backside,
- [00:11:30.330]send you a link that you will fill out for our office
- [00:11:33.660]letting us know
- [00:11:34.493]that you will be a member of that organization,
- [00:11:37.260]a new member of that organization.
- [00:11:41.940]It formalizes and finalizes the,
- [00:11:47.970]not contract, but basically formalizes the relationship
- [00:11:52.620]between you and the chapter.
- [00:11:55.050]After signing the bid,
- [00:11:57.000]doesn't mean that they can't revoke your membership.
- [00:11:59.100]So if they find something out about you
- [00:12:01.800]that they didn't learn
- [00:12:02.910]or you decide that you don't wanna be part
- [00:12:05.310]of that organization,
- [00:12:06.810]they can revoke your membership
- [00:12:08.040]and you can go back and break your bid from that chapter
- [00:12:11.700]if need be.
- [00:12:13.320]So the four steps of the bid process are there.
- [00:12:15.540]If you have questions, please let us know.
- [00:12:17.790]Our contact information
- [00:12:18.840]will be at the end of this presentation.
- [00:12:23.790]Some of our chapters have facilities
- [00:12:26.370]that are part of the membership experiences.
- [00:12:29.220]We have 16 currently within the IFC Chapter
- [00:12:31.530]that have allowed first year students
- [00:12:34.230]to live in what we call University-Approved chapter houses.
- [00:12:37.590]This means that as a first year student,
- [00:12:39.540]you join one of those organizations,
- [00:12:40.950]you can cancel your contract and move into a chapter.
- [00:12:47.430]If you are doing so, we wanna make you aware
- [00:12:49.200]of some of the costs that we have.
- [00:12:50.880]A live-in membership ranges
- [00:12:52.200]anywhere between 9,500 to 12,500 per year,
- [00:12:56.550]and this is at 2022 cost averages.
- [00:13:00.870]A live-in member,
- [00:13:01.710]this includes your room and your board,
- [00:13:04.350]so take that number and divide it by half.
- [00:13:07.080]Each chapter varies on the number of meals
- [00:13:09.720]they provide for students,
- [00:13:11.340]but in most cases you will receive five breakfasts,
- [00:13:14.520]five lunch, and four dinners throughout the week.
- [00:13:17.670]Typically on the weekend, members usually go out to eat.
- [00:13:22.410]Sometimes they'll have leftover plates,
- [00:13:24.090]sometimes they'll be cold sandwich bar, things like that,
- [00:13:26.670]sometimes the chapter will order in food things.
- [00:13:29.160]But typically, because the students
- [00:13:31.200]kind of do their own thing,
- [00:13:32.220]there isn't a formalized meal service.
- [00:13:35.130]Out-of-house members.
- [00:13:36.990]Their dues will range anywhere from 2,500 to 4,500
- [00:13:41.520]if you join a chapter that has a facility
- [00:13:44.340]but you choose not to live in.
- [00:13:46.320]This is because they like to include lunches
- [00:13:48.360]and at least one formal dinner a week at the chapter house
- [00:13:50.873]so that you will come by and meet some of the gentlemen
- [00:13:54.390]and start bonding with your organization.
- [00:13:57.780]If you join some of our great non-housed groups,
- [00:14:00.240]these are groups that do not have facilities,
- [00:14:01.980]your average cost
- [00:14:02.910]is anywhere between 900 and $2,000 per year
- [00:14:05.790]depending on the fee schedule that they have.
- [00:14:12.870]So recruitment events,
- [00:14:13.890]we talked a little bit about the the QR code
- [00:14:17.580]and what it means to do or finding events, things like that.
- [00:14:23.790]We wanted to give you a couple of photos
- [00:14:25.320]of what it looks like on the website.
- [00:14:26.640]On the right hand side,
- [00:14:28.080]you will see when you go to unl.edu/greeks website,
- [00:14:31.830]what the events calendar looks like
- [00:14:33.480]and where you can find the different things
- [00:14:35.010]that are going on.
- [00:14:36.810]We ask that you follow chapters on Instagram.
- [00:14:38.820]A lot of times they will post what they're doing,
- [00:14:40.710]how they're doing,
- [00:14:41.543]photos from the events on Instagram.
- [00:14:43.110]So if you are interested,
- [00:14:44.700]stalk these organizations on Instagram,
- [00:14:47.340]their websites, things like that
- [00:14:48.690]so you can learn as much as you can
- [00:14:50.010]about the information of that organization.
- [00:14:54.030]Make sure to register for recruitment
- [00:14:55.590]so that we can make sure
- [00:14:56.520]that you have the contact information
- [00:14:57.960]for 23 of our IFC groups.
- [00:15:01.110]Call our office, this is a number one tip.
- [00:15:03.450]Before you come to the NSE session,

- [00:15:06.780]new member or new student enrollment session,
- [00:15:10.470]call our office.
- [00:15:12.360]And if you have an interest of meeting with a chapter

- [00:15:58.470]but it includes all of your room and board,
- [00:16:01.080]so all of your meals and sleeping arrangements
- [00:16:03.750]will be covered.
- [00:16:04.890]The fee is $190 but it is a great opportunity for you,
- [00:16:09.210]if you are coming from out of state or rural,
- [00:16:11.790]not only get your orientation
- [00:16:13.740]but also your recruitment completed as you go through,
