- [00:00:01.830]Hi and welcome everyone
- [00:00:03.210]to the College of Engineering's NSC session.
- [00:00:05.970]We're so glad you're taking the time to join us today
- [00:00:08.124]for our college welcome session.
- [00:00:10.530]The plan for our time together today
- [00:00:12.000]is to introduce you to a few important resources,
- [00:00:14.156]talk about student life in the College of Engineering,
- [00:00:16.980]and help you get any questions answered
- [00:00:18.471]so that you can be prepared
- [00:00:19.830]for a smooth transition to college and to engineering.
- [00:00:24.600]My name is Theresa Luensmann,
- [00:00:26.160]I use she/her pronouns,
- [00:00:27.270]and I'm the Assistant Director of Career Services
- [00:00:29.640]in the College of Engineering.
- [00:00:31.890]Hi everyone, my name is Maggie Miller.
- [00:00:33.600]I'm the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Retention
- [00:00:36.090]with our scholarship programs
- [00:00:37.830]and I also use she/her pronouns.
- [00:00:41.760]All right, so to kick us off,
- [00:00:43.230]we'd like to introduce you
- [00:00:44.280]to the new student and family information website.
- [00:00:46.845]If you put into your browser go.unl.edu/engrnse,
- [00:00:57.238]we have emailed you information with resources
- [00:01:01.507]about the College of Engineering before NSE has started,
- [00:01:05.658]which includes that link on there.
- [00:01:08.189]So as a first year student,
- [00:01:10.320]we want you to look at that website
- [00:01:12.240]'cause you'll find information
- [00:01:13.260]that introduces you
- [00:01:14.220]to the Engineering Student Services staff team,
- [00:01:17.028]links to resources that we will have available for you
- [00:01:21.477]and that we will touch on in this presentation.
- [00:01:23.730]And also some helpful tips as you come to college
- [00:01:27.240]and prepare for your first semester here.
- [00:01:29.670]We want every incoming student to review this information,
- [00:01:32.400]so make sure to please visit that website
- [00:01:34.150]and we'll have that really important information
- [00:01:37.500]that you do not want to miss
- [00:01:39.030]and you can always go back to it and and check things out.
- [00:01:43.290]So now I'm gonna pass it to Theresa
- [00:01:45.077]and she'll introduce you to Engineering Student Services
- [00:01:48.510]and what we do to support you.
- [00:01:51.060]Awesome.
- [00:01:51.900]So Maggie mentioned Engineering Student Services
- [00:01:53.970]is one of the kind of areas you're gonna learn about
- [00:01:56.160]when you go to that link for our NSE information,
- [00:01:58.523]and Engineering Student Services,
- [00:02:00.630]or ESS as you will commonly hear it called,
- [00:02:03.630]is a team of professional staff members
- [00:02:05.790]who work just for the College of Engineering
- [00:02:07.560]to serve and support our undergraduate students.
- [00:02:10.030]There's a lot of us,
- [00:02:11.580]so I'm not gonna introduce you
- [00:02:12.870]to every individual who's on our team,
- [00:02:14.940]but instead we're gonna talk about
- [00:02:16.080]what each area of Engineering Student Services does
- [00:02:19.110]and kind of the support and services that we provide.
- [00:02:21.780]So starting at the top of the bubble we have advising,
- [00:02:24.620]some of you may have already connected
- [00:02:26.520]with your academic advisor
- [00:02:27.750]to discuss your fall enrollment
- [00:02:28.950]or you're going to be doing that in the future.
- [00:02:31.290]Your advisors will continue to work with you
- [00:02:33.450]throughout your time in the College of Engineering.
- [00:02:35.550]Advisors obviously help with core scheduling
- [00:02:38.070]and long-term planning,
- [00:02:39.030]but they can also help you add minors
- [00:02:40.701]and get you connected to resources.
- [00:02:43.110]In general, they're a great first person
- [00:02:44.910]to go have a conversation with
- [00:02:46.170]if you've got a question
- [00:02:47.130]or you're not sure about something.
- [00:02:48.990]Whatever your goals are,
- [00:02:50.040]we're here to help you balance classes, involvement,
- [00:02:52.650]work in your personal life.
- [00:02:54.510]Advising also helps oversee
- [00:02:56.370]Nebraska Engineering Support and Tutoring or NEST,
- [00:02:59.340]which is our peer tutoring service for math,
- [00:03:01.260]science and the first two years of your engineering courses.
- [00:03:04.320]We're gonna talk more about NEST as a resource leader.
- [00:03:07.560]Moving to the right,
- [00:03:08.430]that next bubble is student development and career services.
- [00:03:11.218]Student development has two parts,
- [00:03:13.500]Engineering Career Services
- [00:03:14.910]which you'll also get to hear more about later,
- [00:03:16.410]and student programs.
- [00:03:18.180]Engineering Career Services can meet with you
- [00:03:19.860]to prepare you for a successful job or internship search,
- [00:03:22.710]connect you with employers,
- [00:03:24.001]and to help you get to the career fairs, get you ready,
- [00:03:27.060]we put those on.
- [00:03:28.290]The student program staff helps greet you at our front desks
- [00:03:31.350]and puts on a lot of events such as the NUBE experience,
- [00:03:34.620]which we hope you've already heard about
- [00:03:36.030]and definitely will hear about again in this presentation.
- [00:03:39.390]Moving down to the bottom bubble,
- [00:03:41.250]we've got the scholar programs,
- [00:03:42.660]which is the team that Maggie is a part of.
- [00:03:44.730]This team leads some of our major leadership
- [00:03:46.710]and scholarship programs that you might have heard about
- [00:03:49.110]in the past couple of years,
- [00:03:50.190]such as the Kiewit Scholars
- [00:03:51.660]or the Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy.
- [00:03:54.330]If you're part of one of those programs,
- [00:03:55.740]welcome, we're glad to have you.
- [00:03:57.990]And then finally we have recruitment and outreach.
- [00:04:00.144]This is the team that helps us let young future engineers
- [00:04:03.300]know that Nebraska's College of Engineering
- [00:04:05.040]is a great place for their education.
- [00:04:07.320]Many of you may have come on campus visits
- [00:04:09.300]and had a tour from this team
- [00:04:11.040]or from our dean's leaders who are undergraduate students
- [00:04:13.680]who help with those visits.
- [00:04:15.360]This team also conducts outreach,
- [00:04:17.172]which means they focus on educating
- [00:04:19.050]our K through 12 youth in Nebraska
- [00:04:20.880]about what engineering is
- [00:04:21.994]and all the opportunities for engineers.
- [00:04:25.060]There are so many resources in ESS
- [00:04:27.717]and we hope you'll come and visit us frequently.
- [00:04:30.330]If you have a question and you're not sure where to start,
- [00:04:32.427]ESS is really your one-stop shop to get support,
- [00:04:34.936]come see us in the Engineering Library,
- [00:04:36.931]which is on the second floor of Nebraska Hall.
- [00:04:40.440]So you can see we've got our location listed there.
- [00:04:43.470]We also have advisors in Avery Hall
- [00:04:45.300]for students in the School of Computing
- [00:04:46.920]and advisors on East Campus for our agricultural
- [00:04:50.610]and biological systems engineering students as well.
- [00:04:53.700]Now I'm gonna pass it back to Maggie
- [00:04:54.960]to talk about one of our really favorite programs,
- [00:04:58.020]the Complete Engineer.
- [00:04:59.959]So something that we're really proud of
- [00:05:01.920]here in the College of Engineering
- [00:05:03.323]is the Complete Engineer Initiative.
- [00:05:05.580]So I'm gonna talk a little bit about
- [00:05:07.012]what kind of all it encompasses today.
- [00:05:09.749]So the Complete Engineer is a framework
- [00:05:12.420]that we use in our coursework
- [00:05:14.041]both inside, outside the classroom
- [00:05:16.361]and all of our activities within the College of Engineering.
- [00:05:19.586]The reason this was created
- [00:05:21.556]was we wanted our students
- [00:05:23.490]to have very strong technical foundations
- [00:05:25.502]in their curriculum
- [00:05:26.940]and activities alongside the incredible faculty,
- [00:05:29.400]but we also want to develop engineers
- [00:05:31.860]who need additional non-technical skills
- [00:05:33.901]in order to excel in their career.
- [00:05:36.730]So whether you are working in industry
- [00:05:39.600]or you're a graduate student
- [00:05:40.950]or you're going to graduate school
- [00:05:42.840]or go to professional school,
- [00:05:44.160]this framework is gonna be really helpful
- [00:05:45.780]as you move throughout your career.
- [00:05:47.913]So we created this framework to help you strive
- [00:05:50.535]and grow in six different competency areas.
- [00:05:53.597]And so you'll be introduced to these in the fall.
- [00:05:58.260]These competencies will literally be all over the college,
- [00:06:02.437]plastered on walls, on your syllabi.
- [00:06:05.615]You'll find it everywhere.
- [00:06:07.440]And so the first competency I wanna introduce you to
- [00:06:10.710]is the inclusive excellence.
- [00:06:12.691]This is very important as you need to learn
- [00:06:15.660]how to work with people who are different than you.
- [00:06:18.698]Everyone comes from a different background,
- [00:06:20.730]different life experiences.
- [00:06:21.870]So it's important to embrace those differences
- [00:06:24.033]as we know that diversity and inclusion and equity
- [00:06:26.970]is important to create,
- [00:06:29.430]to have creative solutions to issues
- [00:06:31.890]and solve big problems that impact the world around us.
- [00:06:34.890]Next we have communication.
- [00:06:36.513]This one sounds pretty obvious
- [00:06:38.624]but as an engineer you'll be not working just by yourself.
- [00:06:42.750]You'll always be working with a team
- [00:06:44.430]and working to communicate with that team
- [00:06:46.290]about complex technical things that all of you talk about.
- [00:06:50.177]But also needing to know how to communicate with people
- [00:06:52.710]who might not know all those technical terms
- [00:06:54.750]that you may work with every day.
- [00:06:57.300]So it's important to share those ideas effectively
- [00:06:59.805]in order to get that information across the team.
- [00:07:03.898]And you'll find that building relationships
- [00:07:06.330]is gonna be pretty regular
- [00:07:07.410]and we will need that to succeed
- [00:07:10.380]in your career here at UNL and beyond.
- [00:07:13.470]Next, we have teamwork.
- [00:07:14.460]So as I mentioned,
- [00:07:15.389]teamwork is very important as an engineer
- [00:07:18.330]'cause you will never be working on a project by yourself.
- [00:07:20.699]So beyond doing group work,
- [00:07:23.160]engineers will be working to solve issues in the classroom
- [00:07:27.090]and outside the classroom.
- [00:07:28.290]So in your internships or research work and in your career,
- [00:07:31.532]no matter what you do.
- [00:07:33.477]Next, we have self-management and leadership.
- [00:07:35.913]So we want you to learn to manage yourself
- [00:07:38.605]before you know how to lead others.
- [00:07:40.890]So that includes like time management.
- [00:07:42.690]So making sure like you're waking up on time,
- [00:07:45.300]you're getting your meals in,
- [00:07:46.800]you're getting your studies in
- [00:07:48.001]'cause that's gonna be super important.
- [00:07:50.130]And yes, as you develop those skills,
- [00:07:51.960]the hope is that you will then develop that
- [00:07:54.360]and support others and lead others on a team
- [00:07:57.953]is an important initiative to be able to excel
- [00:08:01.562]and also helps you kind of learn
- [00:08:03.510]how to empathize with others
- [00:08:04.903]and support others as they learn
- [00:08:06.900]in growing those skills of self-management as well.
- [00:08:10.050]Next we have civic responsibility.
- [00:08:11.932]Engineering is truly a service profession
- [00:08:14.790]which not a lot of people think about but it very much is.
- [00:08:17.384]So it's important to think about
- [00:08:19.170]how you can have a positive impact on the world
- [00:08:21.420]as you are designing things such as bridges
- [00:08:24.570]or important computer chips
- [00:08:25.920]or like monitors and things like that.
- [00:08:27.940]And you wanna make sure that you are progressing
- [00:08:31.444]to make the world better around you
- [00:08:33.720]and that you are having the positive impact
- [00:08:35.520]in the community and society at large.
- [00:08:37.963]And that easily leads into professionalism and ethics.
- [00:08:42.185]Engineering is,
- [00:08:45.000]it's important that you think
- [00:08:46.350]about how you are designing things
- [00:08:47.910]in order to make sure that they are safe
- [00:08:49.772]and ensure that we can thrive as a society.
- [00:08:53.391]So we want all of our students to graduate
- [00:08:56.040]in order to like help improve the health,
- [00:08:57.720]safety and welfare of society
- [00:08:59.098]'cause you are trusted with a lot of projects
- [00:09:02.580]and have a lot of responsibility on your shoulders.
- [00:09:04.650]So you need to understand the impact
- [00:09:06.270]that you have on the world around you.
- [00:09:08.327]So again, we want all of our students
- [00:09:10.260]to engage in these six competencies as engineering students
- [00:09:14.370]and you'll learn more about that on our website
- [00:09:16.800]as I introduced before,
- [00:09:17.861]and again in your classroom and outside the classroom here
- [00:09:21.030]in the College of Engineering.
- [00:09:22.770]So next Theresa will be sharing
- [00:09:24.450]about the value of our program in the industry
- [00:09:27.540]and the folks that want to hire you potentially.
- [00:09:30.450]Yeah, so why participate in the Complete Engineer, right?
- [00:09:34.710]Maggie just described all those great competencies
- [00:09:36.515]and the different ways
- [00:09:37.950]that you can really learn
- [00:09:39.134]lots of those non-technical skills.
- [00:09:41.364]And we know it's important
- [00:09:42.930]because our employers tell us it's important, right?
- [00:09:45.540]So I've got quotes here from two of our employers
- [00:09:48.115]who are also alums of ours
- [00:09:50.610]and they are sharing why the Complete Engineer
- [00:09:53.250]makes a difference
- [00:09:54.083]and why it's something that is important to them.
- [00:09:55.950]So the first person we have listed there is Anayeli
- [00:09:59.130]who works at Kiewit in Omaha
- [00:10:00.606]and she shares that she feels "The Complete Engineer
- [00:10:03.210]helps develop the leaders
- [00:10:04.763]that the engineering field really needs now
- [00:10:07.440]and in the future.
- [00:10:08.880]So really important to develop those leadership skills
- [00:10:13.110]beyond just obtaining your degree."
- [00:10:15.030]And then John who visits us annually from Austin
- [00:10:18.060]where he works for NI,
- [00:10:19.620]formerly known as National Instruments,
- [00:10:21.360]always asks us when he visits,
- [00:10:23.970]how he can meet with students
- [00:10:25.174]who are really engaging
- [00:10:27.030]and active in building the Complete Engineer competencies.
- [00:10:30.660]He's given talks to our students before
- [00:10:32.460]about the importance of these skills
- [00:10:34.350]and as he shares here, he actively recruits our students
- [00:10:38.370]who are engaged with the program.
- [00:10:40.500]So really specifically looks for students
- [00:10:42.720]who are taking the time to build these competencies.
- [00:10:46.350]Our hope is that you choose to dig into these competencies
- [00:10:49.297]and go deeper and work hard to build these skills inside
- [00:10:53.640]and outside of the classroom.
- [00:10:56.070]We have some really great programs
- [00:10:57.810]that are going to help you start to engage
- [00:11:00.030]with the Complete Engineer
- [00:11:01.560]and Maggie's gonna tell you more
- [00:11:02.550]about one of those programs now.
- [00:11:05.115]So your first experience here
- [00:11:08.520]in the College of Engineering will be the NUBE experience.
- [00:11:11.680]NUBE stands for Nebraska Undergraduates Becoming Engineers
- [00:11:15.990]and this is a welcome session
- [00:11:17.490]for all of our students here in the college.
- [00:11:19.620]And you are expected to attend as a first year student.
- [00:11:23.880]In order to connect to the college,
- [00:11:25.860]you're gonna meet other members in your major
- [00:11:28.920]and other people within the college
- [00:11:30.420]that can be support for you.
- [00:11:33.090]And it is part of that first week of class
- [00:11:35.673]like the week before class starts
- [00:11:38.541]as part of Big Red Welcome
- [00:11:40.861]and you'll hear a lot more about that
- [00:11:42.576]as you go through your orientation experience.
- [00:11:45.420]So the NUBE event will happen on Thursday, August 17th
- [00:11:50.760]from 3:00 to 5:30 PM on campus.
- [00:11:53.413]It is right after regular move-in is over
- [00:11:57.510]and so early move-in programs start at that time.
- [00:12:00.390]And so for students, the welcome sessions
- [00:12:02.553]like Sorority Rush Rakes, Kiewit Scholars,
- [00:12:05.490]Peer Kiewit Foundation, Engineering Academy, and more,
- [00:12:07.680]we'll have activities.
- [00:12:08.880]This is in addition to that.
- [00:12:10.909]Attending NUBE will help connect you again to faculty
- [00:12:14.430]and current students in the department
- [00:12:15.944]as you hear about good tips
- [00:12:18.660]that are gonna help you succeed
- [00:12:19.890]and get started off the semester well.
- [00:12:22.602]And you can register online at our website,
- [00:12:25.525]which is located in the corner,
- [00:12:27.930]bottom right hand corner of the slide.
- [00:12:30.235]And so we encourage you to sign up now at nube.unl.edu
- [00:12:36.824]or if you have questions about it
- [00:12:39.150]or can't get signed up for some weird reason,
- [00:12:41.130]you can reach out to us at ESS at ess@unl.edu
- [00:12:46.740]if you have any specific questions about participating
- [00:12:49.080]or if there's some sort of conflict.
- [00:12:50.850]And now we're gonna transition
- [00:12:52.710]into talking about several resources
- [00:12:54.446]and tips that we offer to support your success
- [00:12:57.630]during your first semester and beyond
- [00:12:59.280]as an engineering student.
- [00:13:01.980]Perfect.
- [00:13:02.813]So in addition to NUBE,
- [00:13:03.646]there are lots of other ways
- [00:13:05.340]that we help you transition
- [00:13:06.510]through your first year smoothly.
- [00:13:08.670]So I mentioned NEST earlier, right?
- [00:13:10.800]Nebraska Engineering Support and Tutoring
- [00:13:12.990]and it's a free tutoring service
- [00:13:15.240]for our engineering students
- [00:13:16.350]located in the Engineering College.
- [00:13:19.020]It's also a great place to study.
- [00:13:20.940]So even if you don't feel like you need that tutoring help
- [00:13:23.766]but you just want to drop by and have some space to focus,
- [00:13:27.360]maybe ask a question or two
- [00:13:28.890]if you find that you are stumped with your homework,
- [00:13:30.955]it's a really great place to have a study group,
- [00:13:33.240]bring your friends along,
- [00:13:34.200]everybody work on your calculus together
- [00:13:36.150]and then if you get stuck you can raise your hand
- [00:13:38.220]and have that resource right there to help.
- [00:13:40.560]You can get support from most first and second year courses
- [00:13:43.380]that our students take like math, chemistry,
- [00:13:45.480]physics and some of our common engineering courses.
- [00:13:48.632]Lots of students use NEST so there's no shame
- [00:13:51.530]in asking for help
- [00:13:53.017]or just going to check your understanding of a concept
- [00:13:55.890]with a tutor who took that class too, right?
- [00:13:58.080]We try really hard to normalize asking for help
- [00:14:01.230]and looking for that support.
- [00:14:02.619]NEST also has some pretty great snacks
- [00:14:04.733]and they have pizza night this semester.
- [00:14:07.560]So NEST is the place to be, a really great spot to learn,
- [00:14:10.860]and it's in the Engineering Library.
- [00:14:13.320]We also offer first-year seminars.
- [00:14:15.180]So every first-year student in engineering
- [00:14:17.010]will be required to take a first-year seminar.
- [00:14:19.269]You don't need to like write down
- [00:14:21.540]that this is a class you're gonna take,
- [00:14:22.650]your advisors already know.
- [00:14:24.000]So your academic advisor's gonna make sure
- [00:14:25.710]that they get you in the right class.
- [00:14:27.445]Depending on your major,
- [00:14:28.800]you'll either be put in an engineering first year seminar,
- [00:14:32.100]which is Engineering 10,
- [00:14:33.270]which you see listed up there first,
- [00:14:34.859]or a different first-year seminar
- [00:14:37.050]if you are a computer engineering,
- [00:14:38.790]software engineering, or computer science major.
- [00:14:41.130]So those students will take CSCE 10.
- [00:14:44.010]Both of these courses are a really great way
- [00:14:46.860]for you to be with your peers
- [00:14:48.435]in the first eight weeks of the semester.
- [00:14:51.776]Engineering 10 is gonna help you explore
- [00:14:54.510]a couple of different majors.
- [00:14:56.160]So Engineering 10, you're gonna learn
- [00:14:57.180]about all of the different engineering majors.
- [00:14:59.040]If you're in between majors,
- [00:15:00.510]it's a great way to learn about the ones
- [00:15:02.400]that you might be interested in.
- [00:15:04.080]Everyone in both first-year seminars
- [00:15:06.300]is also gonna learn more about the Complete Engineer,
- [00:15:08.340]which we mentioned, and general careers in engineering,
- [00:15:11.130]construction and computing.
- [00:15:12.450]We're also gonna talk about how to be successful in college
- [00:15:14.925]and strategies to help you continue forward in your major.
- [00:15:18.420]Whichever class you take,
- [00:15:19.530]you're gonna learn a lot
- [00:15:20.430]and you're gonna make great connections to other students.
- [00:15:22.877]Really awesome way to meet
- [00:15:24.720]other first-year students in your major.
- [00:15:27.090]The School of Computing also has a resource room
- [00:15:29.910]where they provide a lot of that same like free tutoring
- [00:15:32.730]and opportunities for students
- [00:15:34.680]to really feel like they can learn more
- [00:15:36.420]and excel in their classes.
- [00:15:38.166]There are a lot of other offices on campus
- [00:15:41.070]in addition to ESS
- [00:15:42.060]that are there to help ensure
- [00:15:43.350]a successful transition to college.
- [00:15:45.510]Many of the other offices will offer things
- [00:15:48.390]like success workshops.
- [00:15:49.530]So they'll talk about topics like motivation
- [00:15:52.380]or note taking or test prep or managing your stress,
- [00:15:56.790]any of those great kinds of things.
- [00:15:58.693]So you can see we got a couple others listed there.
- [00:16:01.320]The OASIS Study Studio Resource Rooms,
- [00:16:03.240]CAST Academic Coaching, the Study Stop Tutoring,
- [00:16:05.533]lots of academic resources to support you.
- [00:16:08.989]There's several tutoring resources
- [00:16:10.800]and resource centers around campus as well.
- [00:16:14.040]So next up we're gonna introduce you to another resource,
- [00:16:17.411]our College of Engineering Academic Navigator.
- [00:16:21.960]All right,
- [00:16:22.793]so all colleges here at UNL have an academic navigator
- [00:16:26.370]who is there to help new students
- [00:16:28.001]get assistance that they need
- [00:16:30.159]or just be there as a sounding board
- [00:16:32.670]and someone to ask questions to.
- [00:16:34.440]So in the College of Engineering,
- [00:16:35.850]our navigator is Nicole Binderup.
- [00:16:37.671]You may contact her if you need help
- [00:16:40.527]and you don't know where to go or who to ask.
- [00:16:43.401]She's a great resource if you're struggling
- [00:16:46.560]and need help figuring out where to start.
- [00:16:48.735]Nicole also does outreach to students.
- [00:16:51.210]So she might be someone who's emailing you
- [00:16:53.220]or reaching out through some different contact systems
- [00:16:56.130]that we utilize.
- [00:16:57.066]For example,
- [00:16:58.380]she'll reach out to students
- [00:16:59.610]who are not registered for classes next semester
- [00:17:01.775]in order to remind them
- [00:17:03.150]that it's not too late to sign up
- [00:17:04.590]or like just remind them, hey, don't forget to register.
- [00:17:07.590]And if you're not sure how,
- [00:17:08.545]she can help you get signed up
- [00:17:10.320]or connected with who can help you.
- [00:17:12.304]Nicole, again, is a great resource
- [00:17:14.370]and she would very much look forward
- [00:17:17.040]to seeing all of you this fall if you need that assistance.
- [00:17:20.256]Next up we're gonna have Theresa talk about
- [00:17:23.040]how to get involved on campus.
- [00:17:26.280]Awesome.
- [00:17:27.113]So if you haven't heard it already,
- [00:17:28.371]we're sure throughout this NSC process
- [00:17:30.630]that you're gonna hear someone say
- [00:17:32.070]you should get involved at some point, right?
- [00:17:34.969]What we mean when we say you should get involved
- [00:17:37.710]is to find a student organization
- [00:17:39.330]or another group that helps you feel connected,
- [00:17:41.515]make friends, find a support network.
- [00:17:44.190]And there's lots of other benefits involved there too.
- [00:17:46.620]Getting involved also means
- [00:17:48.360]that you're likely going to build
- [00:17:49.830]some of those Complete Engineer competencies
- [00:17:51.660]that we talked about earlier.
- [00:17:53.340]And we find that students who get involved
- [00:17:55.020]are more connected to campus,
- [00:17:56.790]have a stronger sense of belonging.
- [00:17:58.560]And so we really do recommend finding
- [00:18:00.210]at least one thing that you're really excited about.
- [00:18:02.820]We have about 50 student organizations
- [00:18:04.980]in the College of Engineering alone.
- [00:18:06.660]So just for College of Engineering students
- [00:18:08.670]there's no shortage of ways for you to make friends
- [00:18:11.040]and connect with peers.
- [00:18:12.210]But we have student organizations
- [00:18:13.290]based on identity, on your major,
- [00:18:15.630]on academic achievement, on service to the community.
- [00:18:18.720]And we even have a student advisory board
- [00:18:20.310]who meets with the dean regularly.
- [00:18:22.620]In the fall, we'll be helping our student organizations
- [00:18:25.170]put on a big event called Rock the Block,
- [00:18:27.450]which is our student org fair
- [00:18:29.130]just for our engineering student organizations.
- [00:18:32.010]Anyone is welcome though
- [00:18:33.090]so you can bring your roommates
- [00:18:34.153]no matter what their major is
- [00:18:36.000]and you can meet
- [00:18:36.833]many of the different student organizations,
- [00:18:38.280]get on their email lists,
- [00:18:39.570]and learn more about what they do.
- [00:18:41.370]It's an awesome way to be able to decide
- [00:18:44.070]maybe which kinds of clubs you'd be interested in
- [00:18:47.010]and then get signed up
- [00:18:48.000]so you can get more information
- [00:18:49.620]and hopefully attend some meetings
- [00:18:51.180]for different groups you're excited about.
- [00:18:53.160]There are also usually food and games
- [00:18:54.990]at this outdoor event too, if you like Raising Cane's,
- [00:18:57.720]that's been the the food for the last couple years
- [00:18:59.784]and you'll be hearing about it more
- [00:19:01.830]during the first week of classes.
- [00:19:02.910]So stay tuned on that.
- [00:19:04.650]Beyond the College of Engineering,
- [00:19:05.880]obviously UNL offers student involvements of all types
- [00:19:09.480]for anyone around a variety of different things
- [00:19:12.330]like fraternity and sorority life, intramural sports,
- [00:19:15.150]religious organizations, student government, so much more.
- [00:19:18.664]If there's not a student org you're interested in,
- [00:19:21.060]you can also start one.
- [00:19:22.260]So plenty of ways to find things to get involved in
- [00:19:24.810]that you're excited about.
- [00:19:26.203]In addition to our student organizations,
- [00:19:28.106]some of you might also be in a learning community
- [00:19:30.720]or another engineering program
- [00:19:32.370]you might have applied to as a prospective student.
- [00:19:34.579]Those types of organizations
- [00:19:37.350]also provide a good support network
- [00:19:38.940]and resources to get you connected right off the bat.
- [00:19:41.280]And they just have a lot of fun together too.
- [00:19:43.740]With so much going on, so many options,
- [00:19:45.750]here's our best advice.
- [00:19:47.056]We encourage all students
- [00:19:48.570]to get involved in at least one thing.
- [00:19:51.090]Again, this is gonna provide you with a social group,
- [00:19:52.980]a study group,
- [00:19:53.813]a support network is really important to your success
- [00:19:57.150]to have people around you who are supporting you in college.
- [00:20:00.553]On top of that,
- [00:20:01.563]it's really important to check your student email.
- [00:20:04.196]You will hear us say this so many times.
- [00:20:06.701]You're going to be regularly sent opportunities
- [00:20:09.660]to get involved and we don't want you to miss out.
- [00:20:12.240]So please make sure that you're checking that email
- [00:20:14.056]if you haven't started checking it yet,
- [00:20:16.283]maybe even hop in there
- [00:20:18.270]and look at that Huskers email account today
- [00:20:20.460]and see if you've got any great information
- [00:20:22.230]in there already.
- [00:20:24.000]Next, Maggie's gonna talk to you
- [00:20:25.170]about how you can gain valuable experience
- [00:20:27.210]while you're with us.
- [00:20:30.150]So one of the most important things
- [00:20:31.740]we strongly encourage here in the College of Engineering
- [00:20:34.050]is that each of our students
- [00:20:35.190]complete two different types of experiential learning,
- [00:20:38.220]which basically means getting hands-on experience
- [00:20:40.800]and applying what you've learned into the classroom
- [00:20:42.605]to things that you can do out in the world.
- [00:20:46.317]So one the three ways that we encourage students
- [00:20:49.110]to work on that is through internships and co-ops.
- [00:20:55.053]So a few of our programs require an internship,
- [00:20:57.559]but all engineering,
- [00:20:58.830]construction and computer science students
- [00:21:01.289]should plan on at least one internship
- [00:21:04.200]during their college career.
- [00:21:05.883]The industry partners that we work with would expect you
- [00:21:09.000]to have at least one internship experience
- [00:21:10.800]before you graduate
- [00:21:11.822]and we offer a lot of ways to support you in getting those,
- [00:21:15.240]which we will talk about later in this presentation.
- [00:21:18.450]Next is undergraduate research.
- [00:21:20.172]Getting paid to work in a lab is a great opportunity
- [00:21:23.640]and also to get great again hands-on experience
- [00:21:26.113]to work on different research.
- [00:21:27.900]If you're interested in going
- [00:21:29.400]into like a professional career like getting your PhD,
- [00:21:32.880]your master's, anything like that,
- [00:21:34.230]we would encourage you to do that.
- [00:21:35.741]Or if you wanna go to like med school
- [00:21:37.590]or something similar to that,
- [00:21:38.850]some another professional school
- [00:21:40.474]and both undergraduate research
- [00:21:43.080]and internship opportunities are paid.
- [00:21:45.694]So we encourage you to look for opportunities
- [00:21:48.420]that will get you that hands-on experience
- [00:21:50.310]but also you will be compensated for it,
- [00:21:52.500]which is a real win in the field of engineering
- [00:21:54.420]'cause you should always be compensated
- [00:21:57.450]for the hard work that you are putting forth in your career.
- [00:22:00.635]And then the last ways we encourage students
- [00:22:03.360]to potentially get hands-on experience
- [00:22:05.190]is through education abroad.
- [00:22:06.644]There are many different opportunities
- [00:22:09.076]that are actually affordable
- [00:22:11.052]and accessible for you to take classes elsewhere
- [00:22:15.000]in the world if that is something of interest to you.
- [00:22:17.176]So these days we have also
- [00:22:19.320]virtual education abroad opportunities
- [00:22:21.240]that are also pretty affordable as well.
- [00:22:23.199]So if you are interested in studying abroad,
- [00:22:26.052]please work with the Education Abroad Office
- [00:22:28.500]as early as possible.
- [00:22:30.510]That way we can ensure you can get involved
- [00:22:32.580]in the experience that you want.
- [00:22:34.620]And now Theresa will share some ways
- [00:22:36.630]that can help you work towards landing these experiences.
- [00:22:40.440]Yeah, awesome.
- [00:22:43.140]So I mentioned at the very beginning
- [00:22:45.000]when I introduced myself
- [00:22:45.900]that I'm the Assistant Director of Career Services
- [00:22:47.899]for our college
- [00:22:48.900]and now I get to talk to you
- [00:22:49.874]about Engineering Career Services.
- [00:22:52.217]So obviously excited to get to share about this slide
- [00:22:55.290]and about what we provide.
- [00:22:56.700]So Engineering Career Services
- [00:22:58.131]is your dedicated career coaching resource.
- [00:23:01.320]So we only serve students in the College of Engineering
- [00:23:05.040]and we're really here to help you as a coach.
- [00:23:07.470]So I have a team of four undergraduate students
- [00:23:10.230]who work with me as well.
- [00:23:11.473]But we are here to help you polish your resume,
- [00:23:14.233]get you prepped for the career fairs that we help put on,
- [00:23:17.273]and we help provide workshops
- [00:23:19.620]on building key professional skills.
- [00:23:21.600]We'll practice for interviews,
- [00:23:23.073]I'll help you with salary negotiation,
- [00:23:25.350]literally anything related to your career development,
- [00:23:27.319]that's what I'm here for
- [00:23:29.010]and that's what our team helps support you in.
- [00:23:31.425]It can be kind of tricky to navigate those processes
- [00:23:34.470]and so we offer a wide range of support.
- [00:23:36.480]I'll help students just write emails to employers, right?
- [00:23:39.540]So professional communication is one thing
- [00:23:41.430]that we'll help work on as well.
- [00:23:42.510]So we're really here for every step of your journey
- [00:23:44.273]when it comes to finding an internship
- [00:23:46.290]or a full-time job
- [00:23:47.160]and looking for those experiences.
- [00:23:49.096]Part of how we help prepare you for that
- [00:23:51.150]is by teaching the Sophomore Career Development Seminar.
- [00:23:53.340]So I'm the instructor for that course.
- [00:23:55.230]All of our students are required to take that
- [00:23:57.090]as a graduation requirement.
- [00:23:58.944]Similar to Engineering 10, usually we take it as sophomores.
- [00:24:02.310]It's called Engineering 20
- [00:24:03.720]and it's gonna help you
- [00:24:04.800]with all of those different career development topics.
- [00:24:06.870]So we work on resumes, we talk about cover letters,
- [00:24:09.300]we talk about interviews and career fairs and networking.
- [00:24:11.820]Little bit of everything to help prepare you
- [00:24:13.560]for all those different stages
- [00:24:15.000]of the career development process.
- [00:24:16.860]I've mentioned that we put on career fairs
- [00:24:18.479]and so we help prepare you for those.
- [00:24:21.210]We have over 100 employers
- [00:24:22.740]who attend each of our career fairs
- [00:24:23.910]and they sell out typically in a week or two.
- [00:24:26.775]It's a great time to be an engineer,
- [00:24:29.010]there's lots of opportunities for engineers
- [00:24:30.809]and our employers are very excited
- [00:24:33.270]to engage with you on campus.
- [00:24:35.490]Beyond those things,
- [00:24:36.323]we do also provide workshops and events with employers
- [00:24:40.260]to provide you with even more opportunities to network
- [00:24:42.713]and find those new opportunities or build skills.
- [00:24:46.620]So lots of ways that we get you connected
- [00:24:48.270]to employers early on
- [00:24:49.590]so you can find those great experiences
- [00:24:51.413]that are gonna help you get that hands-on
- [00:24:53.803]way to apply what you learned in the classroom
- [00:24:56.100]to the real world.
- [00:24:57.660]Next up, we have some tips
- [00:24:59.490]that we're gonna share around some common challenges
- [00:25:02.580]that we see among our first-year students.
- [00:25:05.970]So one of the first things
- [00:25:07.500]that we'd like to really encourage our students to do
- [00:25:10.110]is meet with and seek out their academic advisors.
- [00:25:13.590]As you mentioned early on,
- [00:25:14.871]that these people offer you a lot of support
- [00:25:18.330]and it's just beyond planning your classwork
- [00:25:21.030]or which classes you're going to take.
- [00:25:22.991]So you can book an appointment
- [00:25:24.570]with your advisor online any time
- [00:25:26.820]once you get here in the fall.
- [00:25:28.360]We want you to, they want to help you stay on track,
- [00:25:31.539]work through challenges,
- [00:25:33.360]and help get you connected to resources
- [00:25:35.220]and activities on campus.
- [00:25:37.058]So again, please reach out,
- [00:25:38.700]they're wonderful people
- [00:25:39.728]and they really want to meet with you.
- [00:25:42.976]Another great resource is faculty instructors
- [00:25:46.230]or teaching assistants, TAs is what you see on the screen,
- [00:25:50.070]and so we encourage you to get involved
- [00:25:53.340]and meet them right away.
- [00:25:54.924]They care deeply about your success here at UNL
- [00:25:58.103]and they want to make sure
- [00:25:59.970]that they can get you through the coursework
- [00:26:02.040]like efficiently and effectively.
- [00:26:04.110]And so one tip we recommend
- [00:26:05.880]is that at the start of the semester
- [00:26:07.920]is introduce yourself to your,
- [00:26:09.690]like what are your professors, instructors,
- [00:26:11.850]and what have you during that first week of class.
- [00:26:14.310]And the earlier the better.
- [00:26:15.300]So like it's not mid-semester,
- [00:26:17.010]you're like, hello, I need help and I'm failing everything.
- [00:26:20.370]It's a little bit easier to keep you on track
- [00:26:22.470]if you reach out early.
- [00:26:23.794]You can always visit their office hours,
- [00:26:26.070]which should be posted in your syllabi or on your Canvas.
- [00:26:28.921]Your teaching assistants or TAs
- [00:26:31.140]also have their hours posted and work with our,
- [00:26:34.257]they are graduate students or undergraduate students
- [00:26:36.786]and they will also support you in that coursework as well
- [00:26:39.780]and will set up meetings with you.
- [00:26:41.490]And now Theresa can kind of help with the last best tips.
- [00:26:44.100]Yeah, perfect.
- [00:26:45.360]So like Maggie mentioned,
- [00:26:46.447]we want you to get connected to all those people
- [00:26:49.110]she talked about because we want you to ask for help.
- [00:26:51.646]Asking for help is really important
- [00:26:53.490]and can be a really big key to your success.
- [00:26:55.830]So we encourage you to reach out to academic advisors,
- [00:26:58.680]instructors, someone in your support network early
- [00:27:01.470]if you are having any kind of challenge.
- [00:27:03.330]We want you to ask questions.
- [00:27:05.580]It helps us help you, right?
- [00:27:07.793]So we can't know that you're struggling
- [00:27:09.570]unless you communicate it with someone.
- [00:27:11.490]And we would much rather help you
- [00:27:13.477]after the first test doesn't go well
- [00:27:15.632]than try to figure out how to salvage the semester
- [00:27:18.349]when things are not going well and the final is tomorrow.
- [00:27:21.360]We're a little late if we're asking then for help.
- [00:27:24.060]So we definitely say ask early, ask often,
- [00:27:26.340]we wanna be there to help you.
- [00:27:27.990]Another one of our tips is to create study groups
- [00:27:30.067]so you can form your own study group
- [00:27:31.860]with friends from your classes,
- [00:27:33.300]friends in your student organizations,
- [00:27:34.710]maybe people you meet at NUBE,
- [00:27:35.978]or if you're in a learning community,
- [00:27:37.950]any of those kinds of things.
- [00:27:39.330]And find time to focus together
- [00:27:41.175]and really study those concepts.
- [00:27:43.680]We find that students are so great at helping each other.
- [00:27:46.350]If I understand something, maybe Maggie doesn't,
- [00:27:48.210]Maggie gets something else that I don't get,
- [00:27:50.130]us studying together
- [00:27:51.120]is gonna help both of us learn even more.
- [00:27:53.280]Even better, bring that whole study group to NEST.
- [00:27:55.813]It's a good place to start
- [00:27:57.270]if you don't know many other students in your classes
- [00:27:59.250]just yet, if you're like, I can't form my own study group,
- [00:28:01.590]you could come hang out at NEST
- [00:28:02.850]or bring your study group to NEST.
- [00:28:04.320]It's gonna be a great resource and place
- [00:28:05.820]to be able to study and work on your homework.
- [00:28:07.576]Very last thing is time management.
- [00:28:10.754]So now already this summer is a good time
- [00:28:13.980]to be thinking about how you're going to keep track
- [00:28:15.900]of everything that you're balancing before you get here.
- [00:28:18.570]College is pretty different from high school
- [00:28:20.521]and there's too much going on
- [00:28:22.260]to just try to remember everything.
- [00:28:23.910]You're gonna wanna come up with a system that works for you.
- [00:28:27.450]So it could be your phones reminders or calendar app.
- [00:28:30.057]It could be your calendar
- [00:28:31.800]that goes with your huskers.unl.edu email account
- [00:28:35.160]that you should be checking anyway.
- [00:28:36.570]Remember I mentioned it earlier,
- [00:28:38.280]please check your email.
- [00:28:39.512]It could be a paper planner if you prefer that,
- [00:28:42.849]could be like a monthly calendar
- [00:28:44.730]that you put by your desk.
- [00:28:46.170]Any of those types of things
- [00:28:47.130]is really gonna help you stay on track.
- [00:28:49.066]No one is going to be here telling you to go to class
- [00:28:52.732]or to eat food or that your assignments are due.
- [00:28:55.650]You are going to be solely in charge of all of those things.
- [00:28:58.620]And so it's really important that you look at your syllabi
- [00:29:00.780]and you look at when big assignments are due
- [00:29:02.190]and when you've got tests coming up
- [00:29:03.600]and you just really stay on top of all of that stuff.
- [00:29:06.270]We think whatever works for you is great.
- [00:29:08.550]We're not gonna tell you which system to choose,
- [00:29:10.860]but it is really important that you try something
- [00:29:12.780]and then we'd encourage you to evaluate it.
- [00:29:14.261]Is it actually working to use the calendar
- [00:29:17.640]attached to your Huskers email account?
- [00:29:19.080]Maybe not.
- [00:29:19.913]Is your paper planner actually working
- [00:29:21.404]because it doesn't remind you 15 minutes
- [00:29:23.430]before something that you need to get there?
- [00:29:25.070]We find that time management
- [00:29:27.450]is one of the biggest challenges that our students face.
- [00:29:30.780]So prep now or think about it now
- [00:29:33.000]so that you're ready for the fall.
- [00:29:35.190]And that really wraps up our top tips
- [00:29:37.230]and brings us to the end of our presentation.
- [00:29:41.040]So if you have any questions after today
- [00:29:43.620]or have follow up questions,
- [00:29:45.060]please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
- [00:29:46.980]You can see the email address on the screen there.
- [00:29:48.567]And the easiest way to contact us
- [00:29:50.369]is by emailing us at ess.unl or yeah, ess@unl.edu.
- [00:29:56.647]And then we'll direct your question to the right person
- [00:29:59.269]to respond to you.
- [00:30:00.570]So you can just send it to our general email account,
- [00:30:02.640]we'll get it to who it needs to go to.
- [00:30:04.560]After you've met with your academic advisor,
- [00:30:06.330]if you have any questions specifically about your classes,
- [00:30:08.910]you can also feel free to contact them
- [00:30:10.467]once you meet them during advising this summer.
- [00:30:14.615]And finally, just thank you all for joining us here.
- [00:30:17.306]Again, as Theresa mentioned,
- [00:30:19.800]we encourage you to reach out if you have any questions
- [00:30:21.930]or just to keep in touch.
- [00:30:23.124]We're here to support you and again,
- [00:30:26.130]we're so excited to have you join us this fall
- [00:30:28.043]in the College of Engineering
- [00:30:29.643]and we hope you have a wonderful day and Go Big Red.
