- [00:00:02.640]Okay, hi there.
- [00:00:03.540]My name is Mariah Johnson
- [00:00:04.890]and I am with Counseling and Psychological Services.
- [00:00:08.874]Hi, I'm Barbara Woodhead.
- [00:00:10.680]I'm the Interim Director
- [00:00:11.880]for Services for Students with Disabilities.
- [00:00:16.380]Okay, and we are so happy to have you join us today.
- [00:00:18.780]We're gonna be talking about finding mental health support
- [00:00:21.840]and disability services at UNL.
- [00:00:24.150]And so each of our offices will spend a little bit
- [00:00:26.550]of time going over our services
- [00:00:28.170]and how we work with students at UNL.
- [00:00:32.400]So a little bit about us
- [00:00:33.930]at Counseling and Psychological Services.
- [00:00:36.540]We are a free counseling service on campus.
- [00:00:39.360]So we work with all undergraduate and graduate students
- [00:00:42.179]throughout their UNL journey.
- [00:00:44.019]We are located on the second level
- [00:00:46.080]of the University Health Center.
- [00:00:47.370]So just on the edge of campus.
- [00:00:49.440]We are open Monday through Friday, eight to five
- [00:00:51.859]and we do have
- [00:00:53.760]an after hours on-call counselor available 24/7.
- [00:00:58.140]So we recognize services
- [00:00:59.550]for mental health are not only needed during business hours.
- [00:01:01.860]So that's always accessible
- [00:01:02.790]and I will talk a little bit more about that here.
- [00:01:07.680]So a little bit about who we are.
- [00:01:09.300]We are a multidisciplinary team of psychologists
- [00:01:11.910]and counselors, and we do have different specialty areas,
- [00:01:15.690]doctoral level interns that are working with us as well.
- [00:01:18.540]So our goal is to help students explore their feelings
- [00:01:20.910]and thoughts, and learn helpful ways to improve mental
- [00:01:22.950]and emotional wellbeing when issues arise.
- [00:01:26.130]We are committed
- [00:01:26.963]to providing quality mental health services
- [00:01:28.590]that meet the needs of a diverse student body
- [00:01:30.780]by providing a safe, welcoming and affirming environment
- [00:01:33.270]during the educational journey.
- [00:01:38.280]So a little bit about our services.
- [00:01:39.780]We offer a variety
- [00:01:41.550]of services including individual counseling,
- [00:01:44.370]group counseling, relational counseling.
- [00:01:46.703]A little bit about our model.
- [00:01:48.510]Since we are on a college campus
- [00:01:49.830]and we work with all of the student population,
- [00:01:53.310]we do work within a short-term clinical model.
- [00:01:55.410]So what that means is we try our best to meet students
- [00:01:58.260]where they're at as far as, you know,
- [00:01:59.910]what are they needing right now with their mental health.
- [00:02:02.640]So typically students are using, you know,
- [00:02:04.920]around four to eight sessions per academic school year.
- [00:02:07.917]It's not necessarily a hardcore limit where they hit eight
- [00:02:11.880]and they no longer can receive services.
- [00:02:14.010]But around that time we like to explore, you know,
- [00:02:16.920]is something more long-term needed,
- [00:02:19.230]potentially a weekly option.
- [00:02:20.820]So we can always provide referrals
- [00:02:22.671]for ongoing services moving forward, that count
- [00:02:26.259]or that kind of limit resets every academic school year.
- [00:02:29.340]So we encourage students
- [00:02:30.300]to continue to utilize our services.
- [00:02:32.826]And that's for our individual counseling option.
- [00:02:36.600]Our group counseling is available
- [00:02:38.056]in a long-term capacity because it is held weekly
- [00:02:41.400]and students can participate in group counseling
- [00:02:43.290]from the time they're starting college all the way
- [00:02:44.910]through the time that they're finished.
- [00:02:46.957]So that's a great option as well.
- [00:02:49.110]We do offer a few different specialty services.
- [00:02:51.600]So as you can see,
- [00:02:52.433]we offer alcohol and other drug services,
- [00:02:54.397]eating disorder treatment services, and crisis intervention.
- [00:02:58.710]So as I mentioned, we have our on-call counselor
- [00:03:00.990]which I'll talk about here shortly.
- [00:03:02.220]But we are available for walk-in appointments too.
- [00:03:06.510]Throughout the UNL campus,
- [00:03:07.620]we provide outreach in different workshops, and consultation
- [00:03:10.560]and collaboration with different departments as well.
- [00:03:13.440]And I will speak a little bit more.
- [00:03:15.000]We have online screenings and self-help resources,
- [00:03:17.430]and I will cover that here shortly.
- [00:03:21.660]As I mentioned, services are completely free
- [00:03:24.360]for UNL students.
- [00:03:25.890]They are funded through a portion
- [00:03:26.940]of the student UPFF fees.
- [00:03:28.737]There are a few different things that do incur a fee,
- [00:03:31.650]including any no-show or late cancellation.
- [00:03:34.170]So we encourage students to call
- [00:03:36.060]if they are not feeling well,
- [00:03:37.770]if they're needing a reschedule for a test,
- [00:03:40.222]otherwise mandated alcohol and other drug evaluations,
- [00:03:43.110]and psychoeducation classes
- [00:03:44.730]that are mandated also incur a fee.
- [00:03:50.310]So a little bit about our services here.
- [00:03:53.816]We want these appointments to be completely accessible
- [00:03:57.780]to students right when they're needing them.
- [00:03:59.250]So you can see here this little chart,
- [00:04:02.040]we start with what we call an initial evaluation
- [00:04:04.530]and these are available same day.
- [00:04:06.390]So we encourage students to call in the morning
- [00:04:08.880]if they are wanting to be seen,
- [00:04:10.980]as we have a variety of times and providers
- [00:04:13.590]that are available each day.
- [00:04:16.509]Students who are new
- [00:04:17.430]to CAPS can call the schedules appointment
- [00:04:19.290]by calling our front desk or contact us
- [00:04:22.620]through our website to schedule online.
- [00:04:25.170]And then during this first appointment,
- [00:04:27.165]the student will work with one of our counselors
- [00:04:29.880]to go over, you know, what's bringing them in,
- [00:04:32.296]what are the pieces that they're wanting to get
- [00:04:34.830]as far as services related to either individual counseling,
- [00:04:38.190]group counseling, or they're needing a referral.
- [00:04:40.500]And then we go from there.
- [00:04:41.640]So as you can see,
- [00:04:43.350]it branches out here into services at CAPS.
- [00:04:45.870]This will include our individual counseling,
- [00:04:48.317]group counseling, relational counseling
- [00:04:50.400]and consultation, or crisis services as needed.
- [00:04:54.090]Otherwise, we'll look at referral options
- [00:04:56.130]to either on-campus or off-campus services or resources.
- [00:05:03.030]As I mentioned about the crisis intervention piece,
- [00:05:05.869]if a student isn't needing mental health support
- [00:05:08.430]and our office is not open,
- [00:05:09.780]we do have that on-call counselor available 27/4.
- [00:05:12.930]They can just contact our main number
- [00:05:14.520]which is listed here and follow the prompts.
- [00:05:17.149]The nice thing is,
- [00:05:19.020]I think a lotta times students get nervous to use that
- [00:05:21.630]as they're not talking
- [00:05:22.463]with their counselor they're normally talking with,
- [00:05:24.390]if they're already engaging in services
- [00:05:26.070]or it feels like someone unknown.
- [00:05:27.765]But we do have full access to this.
- [00:05:29.910]If as student is wanting one of our counselors
- [00:05:31.560]to follow up the next business day,
- [00:05:33.330]we get that information, we can contact
- [00:05:35.100]and get an appointment scheduled then as well.
- [00:05:39.390]If a student is having a medication issue,
- [00:05:41.340]we encourage 'em to contact the health center.
- [00:05:43.650]Those services are completely separate from us
- [00:05:45.630]so their number is listed there.
- [00:05:47.640]And then if it's a medical emergency,
- [00:05:49.140]we encourage 'em to call 911 or UNLPD.
- [00:05:56.940]So as I mentioned earlier,
- [00:05:58.680]we have some self-help resources on our website,
- [00:06:01.330]including online mental health screenings.
- [00:06:04.230]I think a lotta times students are maybe not sure
- [00:06:06.540]if mental health service is something
- [00:06:07.770]that they're needing right away.
- [00:06:09.875]Maybe they're experiencing stress or anxiety,
- [00:06:12.270]but aren't quite sure is counseling enough's best fit
- [00:06:15.510]for me, I'm not quite sure.
- [00:06:17.370]And so these screenings can be wonderful
- [00:06:19.440]to ask the right questions
- [00:06:20.940]and provide some recommendations moving forward.
- [00:06:23.520]So that might be counseling,
- [00:06:24.870]there might be other options online as well.
- [00:06:27.876]We do have the on-demand self-help resources.
- [00:06:31.551]We have some different resources available
- [00:06:33.600]for anxiety, stress management,
- [00:06:36.061]adjusting to college and all those different pieces.
- [00:06:38.910]So if a student is not maybe ready to start services,
- [00:06:41.841]those are resources that are always available.
- [00:06:46.590]Each semester, we do update our group
- [00:06:48.480]and workshop information on our website too.
- [00:06:51.420]So we encourage students and parents to check back
- [00:06:53.790]as those change each semester.
- [00:06:56.730]And then our website is listed here.
- [00:07:00.570]Okay, and I'll pass it off to you.
- [00:07:03.300]Thank you, Mariah.
- [00:07:04.980]So services for Student Disabilities has the acronym SSD.
- [00:07:10.050]We are located in Louise Pound Hall.
- [00:07:12.810]If you're familiar with campus,
- [00:07:14.280]we're between Love Library and Sheldon Art Gallery.
- [00:07:17.190]And our business hours are also eight to five.
- [00:07:20.506]And our department supports the university's mission
- [00:07:24.150]in providing integrated and equitable access
- [00:07:28.170]for students with disabilities.
- [00:07:33.810]Now, we accomplished this mission
- [00:07:38.777]with the work that we do by meeting those needs
- [00:07:44.280]and those demands in academics, as well as housing
- [00:07:47.661]and some other programs
- [00:07:49.200]where campus stakeholders consult with us.
- [00:07:52.110]And again, these are to protect the students civil rights
- [00:07:55.500]under the Americans with Disabilities Acts.
- [00:08:01.470]There is some confusion
- [00:08:03.390]for students coming to the university for the first time
- [00:08:07.050]because our services may look different
- [00:08:10.200]than what they received in the K-12 setting.
- [00:08:13.320]And the reason for that is that we function
- [00:08:15.690]under different laws.
- [00:08:17.790]In the K-12 setting,
- [00:08:19.620]we focus is on success because of IDEA law
- [00:08:23.337]which also addresses the fact that students have
- [00:08:26.550]a right to a free and appropriate public education.
- [00:08:29.953]In college or post-secondary,
- [00:08:32.400]the accommodations that are provided function
- [00:08:35.880]under the Americans with Disabilities Act
- [00:08:38.220]and 504 of the Rehab Act.
- [00:08:40.620]And these accommodations are determining barriers
- [00:08:44.490]that can be removed reasonably
- [00:08:46.750]and therefore providing access to the students.
- [00:08:50.550]Now, students become self-advocates in this process
- [00:08:53.430]but our disability specialists help
- [00:08:55.920]with that responsibility.
- [00:08:57.470]The goals and responsibilities
- [00:08:59.910]of K-12 education are different.
- [00:09:02.550]And my next slide will show you
- [00:09:04.451]that difference a little bit more clearly.
- [00:09:07.980]If you look at the far left column,
- [00:09:10.170]you'll see that there are six bullets that identify
- [00:09:14.016]and list the experiences
- [00:09:16.530]when an individual is seeking accommodations.
- [00:09:19.710]So the school system, K-12, has that IEP team
- [00:09:24.810]that works with the student.
- [00:09:26.250]You have the instructors, the specialists, the parent
- [00:09:29.850]and the student all involved in that K-12 experience.
- [00:09:34.320]When you look at the far right column, you will notice
- [00:09:37.380]that the responsibilities shift to the student
- [00:09:41.040]who's coming to the university.
- [00:09:43.020]And the college is responsible
- [00:09:45.270]for providing those accommodations
- [00:09:47.070]to the students once it's determined
- [00:09:49.440]what they're eligible for.
- [00:09:51.360]And in that process, we, of course, are helping
- [00:09:54.150]the student navigate that transition.
- [00:09:57.090]It's not that they just show up on campus,
- [00:09:59.570]and suddenly they have to know what
- [00:10:01.650]and how to do all of these factors.
- [00:10:04.080]We're here supporting that transition.
- [00:10:07.682]Let's look at the definition of disability
- [00:10:12.720]in post-secondary settings.
- [00:10:14.580]As defined by law,
- [00:10:15.510]the disability has to be a type of physical impairment
- [00:10:18.840]or a mental impairment that substantially limits one
- [00:10:22.260]or more major life activities.
- [00:10:24.720]And on the right, you will see a list
- [00:10:26.490]of the types of conditions that we are accommodating.
- [00:10:30.960]One that is not listed here,
- [00:10:33.180]and we're starting to receive documentation,
- [00:10:35.610]medical documentation that lists this is long COVID.
- [00:10:39.360]That condition would also be eligible for accommodations
- [00:10:42.612]in our department.
- [00:10:44.640]And as a result of these different areas
- [00:10:47.385]of conditions or disability,
- [00:10:50.091]we are looking at needing different types of documentation
- [00:10:54.660]to support that.
- [00:10:55.890]Our website has that information.
- [00:10:57.990]That is very helpful.
- [00:10:59.640]And what we often tell students
- [00:11:02.400]is that these conditions can be accommodated.
- [00:11:07.350]Students who graduate
- [00:11:08.490]from the university are meeting the criteria
- [00:11:11.340]and the expectations just like any other students.
- [00:11:14.760]But what our office is doing is removing the barriers
- [00:11:17.870]or challenges that can be eliminated reasonably.
- [00:11:23.970]In that process,
- [00:11:25.099]students often have some questions for us.
- [00:11:28.670]They wanna know will their registration
- [00:11:31.230]with SSD become a part of their academic record?
- [00:11:34.740]In other words, will their association
- [00:11:37.020]with our department appear somewhere after they graduate
- [00:11:41.160]or if they're pursuing additional graduate education?
- [00:11:44.277]And the answer is no.
- [00:11:46.230]Their association with our office
- [00:11:48.960]or for these services cannot legally appear on transcripts.
- [00:11:53.774]Students also ask us
- [00:11:55.320]if they should share their medical conditions
- [00:11:57.810]with their professors.
- [00:11:59.310]On some occasions they may be sharing them
- [00:12:01.560]with their professors before they share 'em with us.
- [00:12:04.470]In that case, professors will be referring students to SSD.
- [00:12:10.980]And the reason for that
- [00:12:11.850]is that faculty are not qualified to review
- [00:12:15.600]and determine reasonable accommodations in this setting.
- [00:12:19.110]There may be other instances where a condition
- [00:12:21.900]if somebody's missing class, for example,
- [00:12:23.640]with the flu or they have a really bad cold,
- [00:12:27.090]that would not be a condition
- [00:12:29.010]that would necessitate registration with our office.
- [00:12:32.520]But if somebody's had the flu
- [00:12:34.078]or they've had a condition that was treated very quickly,
- [00:12:39.715]they may be providing some information to the professors
- [00:12:42.930]but the professors know to refer those students back
- [00:12:46.110]to us to make that determination.
- [00:12:48.870]Now, that also follows with another question.
- [00:12:51.330]Does SSD ever share the diagnosis of faculty and staff?
- [00:12:55.200]The answer is no.
- [00:12:56.520]We that we keep that information confidential
- [00:12:59.234]within our system and our record keeping.
- [00:13:02.649]If a diagnosis is shared with faculty,
- [00:13:06.150]faculty are trained to understand
- [00:13:09.390]that that information is confidential
- [00:13:12.120]and they should be referring the student back to us.
- [00:13:16.320]Last question, how are my accommodations implemented?
- [00:13:20.400]So SSD, a disability specialist, meets with a student,
- [00:13:23.790]reviews a documentation
- [00:13:25.650]and they have an interactive process
- [00:13:27.510]to determine those reasonable accommodations.
- [00:13:29.940]A plan is created and sent to the student.
- [00:13:33.510]The students are responsible to share those plans
- [00:13:36.690]with each of their instructors.
- [00:13:38.790]And the plans technically do not take effect
- [00:13:41.520]until the faculty are notified.
- [00:13:43.920]So students will email that plan to their instructors.
- [00:13:46.770]That's the first step.
- [00:13:48.150]Second step, they will request a meeting or appointment
- [00:13:51.720]with their faculty to discuss which accommodations they need
- [00:13:54.990]for their particular courses.
- [00:13:56.970]And of course, like I said earlier,
- [00:13:58.620]the disability specialists are here
- [00:14:00.720]to help the student navigate those conversations
- [00:14:03.930]with faculty, our office also serves as a resource
- [00:14:07.650]for faculty who have questions about the accommodations.
- [00:14:11.250]It is not the student's responsibility
- [00:14:13.410]to defend their eligibility for those accommodations.
- [00:14:17.970]So what we encourage students and families to do
- [00:14:22.050]is to contact us with any questions,
