- [00:00:01.830]Hello and welcome to the University Honors Program.
- [00:00:05.100]I'm Jacob Schlange, the Assistant Director of the Program.
- [00:00:08.760]If you've already applied
- [00:00:10.050]and been admitted to the Honors Program
- [00:00:11.430]for the fall 2023 com semester, congratulations.
- [00:00:15.870]We're excited to welcome you to campus this fall.
- [00:00:18.600]However, if you're watching this video
- [00:00:20.040]and you have not it been admitted to the Honors Program
- [00:00:22.890]there are still opportunities to apply for the program.
- [00:00:26.520]You can apply after your first semester of college
- [00:00:28.740]in December, 2023 to join the program
- [00:00:31.380]for the spring semester.
- [00:00:33.300]For those of you who have been admitted
- [00:00:35.160]I'm gonna walk you through some of the expectations
- [00:00:37.020]for the fall semester for our honors students
- [00:00:39.270]so that you have everything that you need to
- [00:00:40.890]know to be successful going into new student enrollment
- [00:00:43.920]and into the fall semester.
- [00:00:48.840]So the University Honors Program is first
- [00:00:50.700]and foremost a community of scholars
- [00:00:52.980]who share an academic drive
- [00:00:55.020]and dedication to intellectual curiosity,
- [00:00:57.379]learning an a diverse array of interdisciplinary fields
- [00:01:01.800]and diving deeper into the content that they're studying
- [00:01:05.340]inside and outside of the classroom.
- [00:01:07.770]So if you're looking for that community,
- [00:01:09.180]you are certainly going to find it here
- [00:01:10.530]in the Honors Program
- [00:01:12.000]our students make up about 2000 students
- [00:01:14.910]or about 10% of the undergraduate student population
- [00:01:18.060]and they represent every undergraduate college
- [00:01:20.310]on campus as well as
- [00:01:21.630]over a hundred different majors at UNL.
- [00:01:25.020]However, it's also important to recognize
- [00:01:27.150]that the Honors Program is an academic program
- [00:01:29.550]with some specific curricular requirements
- [00:01:32.040]that you must fulfill
- [00:01:33.300]in order to graduate from the University with honors.
- [00:01:36.900]If you complete these requirements
- [00:01:38.460]you'll earn a special distinction
- [00:01:40.110]on your diploma that denotes your graduation with honors
- [00:01:42.690]and you'll be recognized at graduation
- [00:01:44.850]for that accomplishment.
- [00:01:46.380]So I'm gonna walk you
- [00:01:47.213]through a couple of those requirements today.
- [00:01:51.210]The first is our 189H Seminar.
- [00:01:53.880]This is a three credit hour seminar,
- [00:01:56.100]a three credit hour class that you can take
- [00:01:58.650]during the fall semester to fulfill one or more
- [00:02:02.190]of your ACE requirements.
- [00:02:04.170]So the 189H Seminar is meant to
- [00:02:06.847]be a small classroom setting,
- [00:02:08.790]about 20 students in the class.
- [00:02:10.461]It's designed to be very discussion based
- [00:02:12.870]and interactive, and they cover a wide array of topics,
- [00:02:15.720]everything from the neuroscience of zombies to ethics
- [00:02:19.440]and sports, music and film, or how urban planning
- [00:02:23.070]can influence equity in American cities.
- [00:02:26.880]As I said, these are all discussion-based small classes
- [00:02:30.390]and they often tend to be some
- [00:02:31.830]of our students favorite classes at UNL.
- [00:02:35.250]During the the New Student Enrollment Advising session,
- [00:02:37.830]you will meet with an advisor and walk through
- [00:02:40.020]which seminar might be the best fit for you
- [00:02:41.700]based on your major requirements,
- [00:02:43.830]based on your schedule availability,
- [00:02:45.690]any ACE credits that you might be bringing in
- [00:02:47.580]from high school, and your general interest
- [00:02:50.220]in the topics that are presented.
- [00:02:52.590]So, keep in mind that your top preference of 189H Seminar
- [00:02:56.670]may not be the one that is the best fit for you
- [00:02:59.190]and your schedule when it comes to fall registration.
- [00:03:04.500]The next class that you'll enroll in
- [00:03:06.778]is the UHON 101H: Honors Community.
- [00:03:09.780]This is our peer mentor seminar
- [00:03:12.480]and it's required for all first semester honors students
- [00:03:16.050]unless you have a scholarship program
- [00:03:18.810]that has another required seminar,
- [00:03:20.760]in which case you would take that seminar instead.
- [00:03:25.230]This is a one credit hour class
- [00:03:26.573]and over the course of the semester, you'll be paired
- [00:03:28.920]with an upper class honor student leader
- [00:03:31.320]who will serve as your mentor, as well as the mentor
- [00:03:34.440]to a group of about seven to 10 other first year students.
- [00:03:39.060]So this'll be your opportunity to connect
- [00:03:41.610]to the UNL Campus and community,
- [00:03:44.550]as well as to the resources available in the Honors Program
- [00:03:47.670]and the opportunities that we have to really
- [00:03:49.440]help you make the most of your experience in UNL Honors.
- [00:03:54.270]This course is designed and facilitated
- [00:03:57.000]by upper class honors students with your needs in mind.
- [00:03:59.880]So they're thinking
- [00:04:00.713]about the things that they have experienced
- [00:04:03.210]in their first and second years of college
- [00:04:04.980]and how they can help you navigate that as well as possible.
- [00:04:09.360]And this is also a time where you'll really
- [00:04:11.160]have the chance to figure out what your purpose
- [00:04:13.110]and place in the Honors Program is.
- [00:04:15.810]So this is a great opportunity to get to know the rest
- [00:04:19.080]of the honors community during this semester.
- [00:04:23.070]Now, when you look at your fall semester schedule
- [00:04:25.770]you may also decide to register
- [00:04:27.390]for a departmentally offered honors course.
- [00:04:30.000]This is not a requirement
- [00:04:31.140]but your advisor can help you identify
- [00:04:32.700]whether there are any courses that might be a good fit.
- [00:04:35.610]This does count towards your overall required honors hours
- [00:04:38.250]for graduation.
- [00:04:39.510]And this would typically be a class like English 150H
- [00:04:42.810]or Math 107H. A course that is an honors course offered
- [00:04:47.040]by another department on campus
- [00:04:48.780]not offered by the University Honors Program.
- [00:04:51.780]So if you have questions about this
- [00:04:53.280]you can talk to your advisor,
- [00:04:54.930]often they will be able to help you navigate that.
- [00:04:59.280]I also wanna look ahead now to some
- [00:05:00.810]of the opportunities we have coming up in the fall.
- [00:05:02.880]The first is our Link Up to Lincoln Program.
- [00:05:05.040]This is the third year that we've offered this.
- [00:05:07.530]This is an opportunity to move to campus about a week early
- [00:05:10.950]and to get settled in Knoll
- [00:05:13.860]or whichever residence hall you're living in
- [00:05:16.620]and to start to meet other honors students
- [00:05:18.450]during this week in advance of classes.
- [00:05:21.480]This is an opportunity to get to know first year students
- [00:05:24.360]but also to explore the city of Lincoln
- [00:05:27.000]as each day upper class student guides
- [00:05:29.820]will take you to several different cultural
- [00:05:33.000]and historically significant places in Lincoln
- [00:05:35.430]and get some behind the scenes tours
- [00:05:37.890]of some of those resources.
- [00:05:39.990]It's a really great opportunity.
- [00:05:41.220]It's a lot of fun.
- [00:05:42.420]It's a great way to kickstart your time in Nebraska Honors,
- [00:05:45.180]but space is limited.
- [00:05:46.080]So sign up at the link provided on the screen here.
- [00:05:50.250]The next thing
- [00:05:51.083]that I wanna draw your attention to is our honors week.
- [00:05:53.400]This is from Thursday, September 7th
- [00:05:55.320]to Thursday September 14th,
- [00:05:57.347]and we'll have a bunch of events throughout the week
- [00:06:00.300]to help you get connected to the honors community.
- [00:06:03.450]So each of our four student organizations will host an event
- [00:06:06.420]during that week giving you the opportunity to get together
- [00:06:10.590]over pancakes or trivia or s'mores or many other things
- [00:06:14.520]and to start to meet your fellow honors students
- [00:06:17.730]in Knoll and students from around campus.
- [00:06:25.123]So as you come into your fall semester
- [00:06:27.330]we're really excited to welcome you to the Honors Program
- [00:06:30.000]and perhaps more importantly, to see the path
- [00:06:32.700]that you'll choose to take once you arrive on campus.
- [00:06:35.820]So this could be getting involved
- [00:06:38.310]with honors after school clubs, and leading a a club
- [00:06:40.920]of your own design in a local school.
- [00:06:43.470]This could be taking advantage
- [00:06:44.520]of our honor specific study abroad experiences,
- [00:06:46.903]traveling to places like Costa Rica
- [00:06:49.200]on a pre-health study abroad with fellow honors students.
- [00:06:52.770]It could be getting involved in taking on leadership roles
- [00:06:54.930]within our four student organizations in the Honors Program
- [00:06:58.320]or perhaps getting an internship
- [00:06:59.850]with a local nonprofit through our Intern Foundry Program.
- [00:07:03.030]And there's so many other ways that you could take advantage
- [00:07:05.340]of your experience
- [00:07:06.173]in honors to really maximize your time at UNL.
- [00:07:08.730]Our honors advisors are here to help you navigate all
- [00:07:11.370]of that, as well as to answer any questions
- [00:07:13.470]that you might have about honors courses
- [00:07:15.120]or requirements along the way.
- [00:07:17.160]So we're excited to welcome you to campus this fall.
- [00:07:20.730]If you do have any questions
- [00:07:22.680]as we come to the fall semester or you're interested
- [00:07:25.380]in making any swaps to your honors courses for the fall
- [00:07:28.307]please email our office at uhon-office@unl.edu.
- [00:07:33.750]Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you this fall.
