- [00:00:16.860]Hello, and welcome to our session
- [00:00:18.870]on how to help your students get connected
- [00:00:20.640]with clubs and volunteer opportunities.
- [00:00:22.980]We are so excited that you're here with us today,
- [00:00:24.930]and that you're engaging in this process
- [00:00:26.550]as your students start their journey
- [00:00:27.960]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:30.270]Today, we're going to share with you a few ways
- [00:00:32.220]that we can assist your students
- [00:00:33.480]during their involvement journey here at Nebraska.
- [00:00:35.970]There are numerous ways for students to get connected
- [00:00:38.220]across campus and in the Lincoln community,
- [00:00:40.740]and we will cover these throughout the presentation,
- [00:00:42.990]as well as share with you some helpful tools and resources.
- [00:00:48.030]Our mission here in the Student Leadership Involvement
- [00:00:50.250]and Community Engagement Office, or SLICE,
- [00:00:53.010]is to help your students to find ways
- [00:00:54.690]to get engaged here on campus.
- [00:00:56.670]These involvement and volunteer opportunities
- [00:00:58.440]will help your students to make friends,
- [00:01:00.390]find their community,
- [00:01:01.650]apply what they're learning in the classroom,
- [00:01:03.450]and give them the skills needed for their future career.
- [00:01:07.680]The SLICE team is made up of a few different areas,
- [00:01:10.260]which provide opportunities
- [00:01:11.460]for your students to get involved.
- [00:01:13.380]The first are recognized student organizations,
- [00:01:15.510]or as we call them, RSOs.
- [00:01:17.910]Currently, we have 425 plus active RSOs
- [00:01:21.210]that range in interest and purpose.
- [00:01:23.580]We will dive into specifics
- [00:01:24.990]of how your students can get involved in RSOs
- [00:01:27.090]later in the presentation.
- [00:01:29.310]Next is our Campus Nightlife Team,
- [00:01:31.410]who provides engagement opportunities,
- [00:01:33.240]specifically during late nights and on the weekends.
- [00:01:36.300]They host everything from carnival nights to karaoke events,
- [00:01:39.450]all with the intent of helping your students
- [00:01:41.310]find their community.
- [00:01:43.650]Our University Program Council, or UPC Nebraska,
- [00:01:46.830]is a board that works to provide events programs
- [00:01:50.550]that are appealing to your students and across campus.
- [00:01:54.060]They bring in speakers, comedians,
- [00:01:55.710]and coordinate concerts throughout the school year,
- [00:01:57.750]all of which are free for your students to attend.
- [00:02:01.140]Leadership and community engagement opportunities
- [00:02:03.420]extend beyond the boundaries of campus,
- [00:02:05.550]and our team's here to help connect your students
- [00:02:09.030]to volunteer opportunities at nonprofit organizations,
- [00:02:12.600]get them registered to vote, and gain leadership skills
- [00:02:15.360]by attending leadership workshops.
- [00:02:20.100]Because there are so many opportunities
- [00:02:21.930]for your students to be involved in,
- [00:02:23.940]they may feel overwhelmed and not know where to start.
- [00:02:26.760]To ease this feeling and simplify
- [00:02:28.470]the process of getting involved,
- [00:02:30.420]we will break down the involvement journey
- [00:02:31.980]into three easy steps.
- [00:02:34.200]The first step is to show up,
- [00:02:36.000]because how will your students know if they like something
- [00:02:38.520]if they don't show up and try it for themselves?
- [00:02:41.160]We encourage your students to get out of their rooms,
- [00:02:43.590]and show up to events and activities going on across campus.
- [00:02:46.920]Your students could show up for large events,
- [00:02:49.260]like Party at the Union, attend a meeting for an RSO
- [00:02:52.230]that they might be interested in joining,
- [00:02:54.330]or network with a nonprofit organization
- [00:02:56.370]during our nonprofit and residence fairs.
- [00:02:59.190]We hear from many students
- [00:03:00.750]that the number one reason they don't attend events
- [00:03:02.850]is because they don't wanna go alone.
- [00:03:05.070]So we encourage and then challenge your students
- [00:03:08.010]to invite their roommates, classmates, and friends
- [00:03:10.920]to join them in attending events
- [00:03:12.570]and accept invitations when presented.
- [00:03:18.930]There are several event calendars available
- [00:03:21.150]to help your students find events and activities
- [00:03:23.250]that they can attend.
- [00:03:24.600]We'll show you a few of the main event calendars
- [00:03:26.850]that your students can use
- [00:03:28.410]to find out what is happening on campus.
- [00:03:31.260]The Big Red Welcome website, pull that over for you to see.
- [00:03:38.610]And calendar is a great place to see what is going on
- [00:03:41.490]during the first few weeks of classes in August,
- [00:03:44.070]and are events specifically created
- [00:03:45.660]to help your students meet each other and have fun.
- [00:03:48.540]It'll eventually get filled with actual events,
- [00:03:51.840]since we're still planning those right now.
- [00:03:57.870]The Student Event Calendar is another great resource,
- [00:04:00.720]and let me pull that over for you to see.
- [00:04:05.430]It's another great resource
- [00:04:06.570]to see what is happening across campus,
- [00:04:08.580]since it shows events
- [00:04:09.720]that are specifically planned for your students.
- [00:04:12.810]It includes events, big and small,
- [00:04:14.670]but also things like workshops, informational sessions,
- [00:04:17.790]and support groups.
- [00:04:19.080]And you could see you could also filter.
- [00:04:23.280]So many to choose from.
- [00:04:32.424]All right, next, we have Handshake,
- [00:04:36.930]and let me pull that over for you to see.
- [00:04:45.927]There we go.
- [00:04:46.830]All right, sorry about that.
- [00:04:48.600]So the Handshake platform is a great resource
- [00:04:50.610]where your students can locate volunteer opportunities.
- [00:04:53.370]If your students are interested in volunteering
- [00:04:55.950]at places like the People's City Mission,
- [00:04:57.540]or any other site with volunteer opportunities,
- [00:05:00.060]then they can log into Handshake.
- [00:05:01.860]This video will show your students
- [00:05:03.510]how to search for opportunities
- [00:05:05.070]by keyword or organization name,
- [00:05:07.050]and sign up to volunteer, all within the same platform.
- [00:05:10.050]And I certainly don't need to click on that right now.
- [00:05:13.620]Next up, we have our NvolveU Calendar of Events.
- [00:05:22.530]So this is located within NvolveU,
- [00:05:24.387]and it's our event calendar.
- [00:05:26.730]It's a website that contains portals
- [00:05:28.500]for 425 plus student organizations,
- [00:05:31.110]and the events that those RSOs are hosting.
- [00:05:34.740]Your students can get to the calendar events
- [00:05:36.870]hosted by student organizations by visiting NvolveU,
- [00:05:40.020]which they'll get...
- [00:05:41.700]They'll use their NU credentials to get into that,
- [00:05:44.880]and clicking on the calendar icon
- [00:05:46.410]in the upper left-hand corner.
- [00:05:49.140]And this calendar will show your students
- [00:05:51.330]all the events that are being hosted by RSOs.
- [00:05:53.850]Your students will see everything from meetings,
- [00:05:55.920]to fundraisers, and practices on this calendar.
- [00:05:59.910]You can see all the different ones that we have available.
- [00:06:09.660]And then next up.
- [00:06:14.490]So once your students have found something
- [00:06:16.470]that they're interested in,
- [00:06:17.430]they must be encouraged to sign up.
- [00:06:19.590]Your students can sign up to be a member of an RSO,
- [00:06:21.860]an intramural sports team, a fraternity or sorority,
- [00:06:24.930]or even sign up to complete a service project
- [00:06:27.150]during one of our day of service initiatives.
- [00:06:29.640]Our SLICE office is frequently asked,
- [00:06:31.417]"Is it possible to be over-involved?"
- [00:06:33.810]While it is certainly a possibility,
- [00:06:35.550]we suggest mitigating this
- [00:06:36.780]by signing up for two different RSOs.
- [00:06:39.180]One should be related to your students'
- [00:06:40.710]field of study or career goals,
- [00:06:42.750]and the other should be more social in nature.
- [00:06:45.240]Exploring organizations that are tied
- [00:06:47.070]to a specific degree program or professional association
- [00:06:50.670]is a great way to learn more
- [00:06:52.200]about a particular field of study.
- [00:06:54.690]Another question that our SLICE office
- [00:06:56.430]is frequently asked is,
- [00:06:57.727]"If I sign up for an RSO, am I obligated to participate
- [00:07:00.690]for the entire semester or year?"
- [00:07:03.210]Absolutely not.
- [00:07:04.800]Figuring out which RSOs are the right fit for your students
- [00:07:07.530]is part of the process.
- [00:07:09.000]If your students try out an RSO,
- [00:07:11.550]but later decide they're no longer interested, that's okay.
- [00:07:14.820]They don't have to continue being involved with that RSO.
- [00:07:17.880]We just encourage them to keep trying
- [00:07:20.760]until they find the right fit.
- [00:07:25.710]All right, as mentioned before,
- [00:07:27.060]there are numerous opportunities
- [00:07:28.500]for your students to be engaged here at Nebraska.
- [00:07:31.560]We wanna highlight just a few to get you started.
- [00:07:34.350]The first is NvolveU, which we mentioned earlier
- [00:07:36.930]when we spoke about
- [00:07:37.800]the student organization's event calendar.
- [00:07:39.990]And let me pull that one over for you to see,
- [00:07:43.320]which you did see a little bit of it.
- [00:07:47.460]All right, so the first (indistinct) is NvolveU.
- [00:07:52.230]So it is our one stop shop
- [00:07:53.670]for all things student organization.
- [00:07:55.530]It's where your students can find current list
- [00:07:58.230]of all active RSOs
- [00:07:59.580]by clicking the organizations, or this little people icon,
- [00:08:02.820]it's right here.
- [00:08:04.020]So if I click on it, it'll take you
- [00:08:05.460]to the page that we're already on.
- [00:08:08.100]In the upper left-hand corner of the screen,
- [00:08:09.780]and this page, your students will see
- [00:08:12.210]the list of the 425 RSOs.
- [00:08:16.020]The left-hand side of the screen
- [00:08:17.460]also contains a handy filter
- [00:08:19.680]for helping your students to narrow down their search,
- [00:08:22.920]right in this area here.
- [00:08:24.840]For example, let's say your students are interested
- [00:08:26.940]in joining a sports club.
- [00:08:28.500]We could simply select that category.
- [00:08:32.040]Let's see, let's find that category.
- [00:08:37.380]Sports club, and...
- [00:08:44.850]As you can see, there's all the different
- [00:08:46.050]sports clubs that are available here.
- [00:08:48.270]Now, if your student is an animal lover,
- [00:08:51.420]we could go up here into the search, and type in animal,
- [00:08:56.190]hit Enter, and it actually shows it.
- [00:08:58.080]And then if you click here, you got all organizations.
- [00:09:00.600]And then it shows all the different organizations
- [00:09:03.060]that have animal listed in their description.
- [00:09:07.058]There we go.
- [00:09:09.090]And then, let's see.
- [00:09:10.320]Now, once your student finds an organization
- [00:09:12.420]that looks interesting,
- [00:09:13.253]they could click onto that organization portal
- [00:09:15.120]to find out a bit more about them.
- [00:09:17.010]Your students can check out the description
- [00:09:19.050]and purpose of the organization,
- [00:09:20.730]see when the RSO holds their next meeting,
- [00:09:22.710]and what kinds of events that RSO will be hosting.
- [00:09:26.970]All right, so next up, we have Campus Recreation.
- [00:09:31.140]So we'll pull over their page here.
- [00:09:33.420]Scroll up to the top, and there's Herbie Husker.
- [00:09:37.590]All right.
- [00:09:39.090]So Campus Recreation provides a great deal of activities
- [00:09:41.430]for your students to enjoy
- [00:09:42.510]and increase their physical wellness.
- [00:09:44.730]Sorry, go ahead and scroll down here,
- [00:09:46.110]so you can see all the different things that they have.
- [00:09:48.690]Outdoor Adventure Center has rock climbing wall,
- [00:09:51.120]a bike shop, outdoor gear rentals and amenities,
- [00:09:54.120]and hosts events for trips, both in town and out of state.
- [00:09:57.780]Campus Recreation also provides intramural sports,
- [00:10:00.390]where your students can play sports
- [00:10:01.740]against their own peers here at Nebraska,
- [00:10:04.080]or sport clubs, which allows your students to compete
- [00:10:07.320]in regional and national competitions
- [00:10:09.180]against other universities.
- [00:10:11.520]Group fitness classes are also a hit,
- [00:10:13.320]and allow your students to work out with their peers
- [00:10:15.330]and try out some new forms of exercise.
- [00:10:20.254]Perfect, so next step.
- [00:10:24.180]So we have two RSO club fairs
- [00:10:27.060]that are hosted during the first week of classes
- [00:10:29.040]in the fall semester.
- [00:10:30.420]These are great events
- [00:10:31.500]for your students to meet RSOs in person.
- [00:10:33.900]The Club Fair is hosted in the Nebraska Union
- [00:10:37.110]on City Campus, and the East Campus Welcome
- [00:10:39.630]is hosted in the Nebraska East Union on East Campus.
- [00:10:44.190]So if service is up your students' alley,
- [00:10:46.530]our community engagement team can help connect them
- [00:10:48.870]to volunteer opportunities in Lincoln.
- [00:10:51.540]Let's see, I've got a great little one here to pull over.
- [00:10:59.340]All right, so we plan four different day of initiative
- [00:11:02.910]service day, oh.
- [00:11:04.560]We plan four different day of service initiatives,
- [00:11:07.620]Urban Plunge, Homecoming Blood Drive, MLK Day of Service,
- [00:11:10.950]and Engage Lincoln.
- [00:11:12.270]During these large-scale, weeklong, or one day experiences,
- [00:11:15.570]your students can volunteer to assist local nonprofits
- [00:11:18.300]in the Lincoln community.
- [00:11:20.220]Your students can also attend our nonprofit residence fair
- [00:11:22.980]held multiple times throughout the year
- [00:11:24.810]in the Nebraska Union.
- [00:11:26.820]So these provide your students
- [00:11:28.320]with the opportunity to network with a nonprofit
- [00:11:30.810]and learn about volunteer or internship opportunities.
- [00:11:34.110]So here we go, the things that I just mentioned.
- [00:11:42.090]Next step.
- [00:11:44.640]All right, once your students have signed up for club
- [00:11:47.340]and volunteer opportunities, we challenge them to level up.
- [00:11:50.820]Your students can take on leadership opportunities
- [00:11:53.220]within their organizations and involvements
- [00:11:55.020]across campus and in the community.
- [00:11:57.570]Another way to level up
- [00:11:59.310]could include holding an on-campus job,
- [00:12:01.710]internship, or research position.
- [00:12:04.050]We want your students to develop personally
- [00:12:06.630]and professionally while they are here at Nebraska.
- [00:12:12.900]All right, some development opportunities.
- [00:12:14.970]Listed here are a few ways that your students
- [00:12:16.740]can continue to level up while on campus.
- [00:12:20.130]Your students may, let me pull that screen over for you.
- [00:12:28.230]Your students may request workshops
- [00:12:29.730]or individual consultations in any area of leadership.
- [00:12:34.140]We are prepared to provide one-on-one consultations
- [00:12:37.560]and educational retreats, workshops, and seminars,
- [00:12:40.920]and classes.
- [00:12:46.860]Husker GROW.
- [00:12:50.940]If your students secure on-campus jobs,
- [00:12:52.890]they will participate in Husker GROW,
- [00:12:54.750]Guided Reflection on Work,
- [00:12:56.370]which is an intentional conversation
- [00:12:57.960]between your students and their supervisors
- [00:12:59.790]to focus on connecting
- [00:13:00.840]what they're learning in the classroom
- [00:13:02.550]with what they're learning in their jobs.
- [00:13:07.530]And then, your students will have multiple opportunities
- [00:13:10.650]to coach or mentor their peers.
- [00:13:12.510]These opportunities could include being an NHRI Mentor,
- [00:13:15.870]Clifton Strengths Coach, Wellness Ambassador,
- [00:13:18.540]OASIS Peer Mentor, and more.
- [00:13:24.090]Our Vote Ambassadors will assist your students
- [00:13:25.980]with registering to vote
- [00:13:27.030]during upcoming primary or general elections.
- [00:13:29.910]Your students can also visit our online registration portal
- [00:13:32.880]found on our Husker Vote Coalition website
- [00:13:36.030]to register to vote in Nebraska or in another state.
- [00:13:39.570]When registering to vote,
- [00:13:40.920]your students can use their resident's hall address,
- [00:13:44.010]which will allow them to vote
- [00:13:45.240]in the Nebraska Union during election day.
- [00:13:49.230]So here are the different opportunities,
- [00:13:52.650]and some videos as well.
- [00:13:56.880]And finally, here we've got education abroad,
- [00:14:00.360]or here, as it's listed, global experiences.
- [00:14:05.490]And again, education abroad
- [00:14:06.990]provides opportunities for your students
- [00:14:08.640]to study outside of the US for a short term,
- [00:14:11.250]or even an entire semester.
- [00:14:15.045]And then here we go, go ahead and scroll
- [00:14:16.230]so you can see all the different options that they have.
- [00:14:21.060]Awesome.
- [00:14:24.450]We want to ensure that your students
- [00:14:26.130]have a great experience here at Nebraska.
