- [00:00:02.790]Hi, my name is Leslie Gonzalez,
- [00:00:04.350]and today we're gonna talk about advising
- [00:00:06.690]in the College of Architecture.
- [00:00:09.930]So within the College of Architecture,
- [00:00:11.580]we have what's called the Student Success Office,
- [00:00:13.950]and we have four staff within our office.
- [00:00:17.700]Those staff include Stephanie Kuenning
- [00:00:21.450]up here in the upper left corner.
- [00:00:24.090]She is our Director of Advising and Student Success.
- [00:00:27.960]She does primarily advising
- [00:00:29.580]for Master of Architecture students.
- [00:00:31.770]Then we have Jamie in the upper right corner.
- [00:00:34.290]She is our primary Undergraduate Academic Advisor.
- [00:00:37.890]My name again is Leslie Gonzalez,
- [00:00:39.870]and I do the undergraduate admissions for the college
- [00:00:42.420]as well as transfer advising.
- [00:00:44.820]And then in the lower right corner we have Sara Troupe.
- [00:00:48.150]She is our Academic Navigator
- [00:00:50.070]within the College of Architecture.
- [00:00:51.990]We are all located in room 232 of Architecture Hall West.
- [00:00:56.910]We have business hours
- [00:00:58.770]from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
- [00:01:03.420]One of the best ways to meet with your academic advisor
- [00:01:06.630]or academic navigator
- [00:01:09.300]are by scheduling through Student Success Hub.
- [00:01:13.950]So on the screen here, you can see what's called my.unl.edu.
- [00:01:18.270]One of my favorite pieces of advice for incoming students
- [00:01:21.780]is to use this presentation, to click on the screen here,
- [00:01:26.820]and open up your MyUNL account and bookmark that page
- [00:01:31.320]because everything you see on this screen
- [00:01:33.780]is something that you're gonna use
- [00:01:35.190]on an either daily or weekly basis.
- [00:01:39.750]For example,
- [00:01:41.130]Canvas is the university's course management tool.
- [00:01:44.520]So every day you'll log in to see what assignments are due,
- [00:01:48.810]what deadlines you have,
- [00:01:51.390]any discussion board participation that needs to be done
- [00:01:54.090]can happen through Canvas.
- [00:01:55.500]MyRed is what you're gonna use
- [00:01:57.960]during academic advising appointments
- [00:02:00.150]to put classes in your shopping cart
- [00:02:03.210]and enroll in your courses each semester.
- [00:02:06.570]When you meet with us for advising for the fall term,
- [00:02:09.660]we will only register for fall classes,
- [00:02:12.240]and then we will meet with you again in October
- [00:02:14.310]to enroll in spring courses.
- [00:02:17.280]But you can feel free to meet with your academic advisor
- [00:02:19.920]any time throughout the school year
- [00:02:22.410]just by scheduling online through the Student Success Hub.
- [00:02:26.430]We don't just assist with degree planning.
- [00:02:28.860]If you have questions on minors,
- [00:02:32.130]if you are wondering about university policies
- [00:02:35.520]or procedures or college policies,
- [00:02:38.310]we're a great resource for you.
- [00:02:40.650]We also try to keep you connected
- [00:02:42.330]with health and wellness initiatives on campus,
- [00:02:45.840]as well as study abroad timing and those opportunities.
- [00:02:50.100]So those are all things
- [00:02:51.060]that we'd be happy to assist you with.
- [00:02:52.710]And please note, one thing we also say is
- [00:02:56.430]when in doubt, come to our office.
- [00:02:58.560]We might not be the expert on campus
- [00:03:01.110]that can answer the question that you have,
- [00:03:03.630]but we can likely connect you with somebody
- [00:03:05.760]who can answer that question.
- [00:03:07.710]So you'll see at the end about campus resources,
- [00:03:10.380]some of the other places
- [00:03:11.280]that we'll be directing you to as academic advisors.
- [00:03:16.950]Another topic that I'd like to cover today
- [00:03:18.930]is the importance of using your Husker email account.
- [00:03:22.230]Once you are registered for classes,
- [00:03:24.480]your Husker email account will be activated
- [00:03:27.450]and the Husker email account is the only email account
- [00:03:30.690]that all university staff and employees
- [00:03:32.790]are gonna use to communicate with you
- [00:03:34.650]throughout the school year.
- [00:03:36.480]And so it's really important
- [00:03:37.740]that you download the Outlook app
- [00:03:39.570]and you are continuously checking your Huskers email
- [00:03:42.330]because if you don't check it,
- [00:03:43.860]you're still responsible for knowing the content
- [00:03:46.680]that was sent to your Husker email account.
- [00:03:49.290]You'll also use that Husker email
- [00:03:52.290]to access some of the free software
- [00:03:54.720]that you'll use within the College of Architecture
- [00:03:57.180]such as Adobe Creative Suite, the Autodesk software,
- [00:04:01.980]and we'll talk more about that here in just a second.
- [00:04:06.060]So in the College of Architecture,
- [00:04:08.550]all incoming students are required
- [00:04:10.680]to have their own laptop computer.
- [00:04:12.780]So what that means
- [00:04:13.860]is you'll need to purchase a laptop
- [00:04:17.160]that meets our requirements.
- [00:04:19.020]We talk about this with you at in-person orientation
- [00:04:22.380]and also your advising appointment.
- [00:04:25.200]And so that laptop computer is going to need to be
- [00:04:28.380]a Windows-based operating system
- [00:04:30.690]that meets or exceeds the computer requirements
- [00:04:33.870]that we provide to you.
- [00:04:37.170]If you don't know where to get a computer,
- [00:04:39.870]the university typically will have
- [00:04:41.550]a couple of different Dell options over this summer,
- [00:04:44.880]some bundle packages for you to choose from,
- [00:04:47.760]but you can truly get your Windows-based operating system
- [00:04:50.910]from anywhere that you would like.
- [00:04:52.890]So some popular or brands tend to be Lenovo or MSI,
- [00:04:58.500]but we have students who have Dell, HP, Microsoft.
- [00:05:02.550]There's really no limit.
- [00:05:04.590]One thing we don't recommend and don't encourage you to get
- [00:05:08.340]is an Apple machine.
- [00:05:10.680]Apple just does not support the Windows-based software
- [00:05:14.640]that is required for our students to use in these programs.
- [00:05:19.500]So if you have questions as you're purchasing your computer
- [00:05:23.340]please do reach out to me
- [00:05:26.580]or your other academic advisor, Jamie.
- [00:05:30.960]We oftentimes will recommend if you find one
- [00:05:33.090]and you're not quite sure
- [00:05:34.230]that it's gonna meet the requirements
- [00:05:36.330]just send us the specs before you hit purchase.
- [00:05:39.570]And we will send that off
- [00:05:40.710]to our computer technician within the college, Jeff Jackson,
- [00:05:43.560]to verify that it will meet
- [00:05:45.750]or exceed our requirements within the college.
- [00:05:47.910]And that computer should get you through
- [00:05:50.010]all four years of your time with us.
- [00:05:53.970]On the screen here, you can see the curricular flow chart
- [00:05:57.210]for our architecture program.
- [00:05:59.370]As you've probably heard already,
- [00:06:01.140]architecture is a four year bachelor of science degree
- [00:06:04.350]plus a two year master's degree.
- [00:06:06.270]So this is all six years of education.
- [00:06:09.720]Interior design,
- [00:06:11.940]this is the four year curricular flow chart,
- [00:06:15.270]and this is the landscape architecture flow chart.
- [00:06:18.330]As you heard earlier from the dean,
- [00:06:20.160]all of our majors do share the same classes the first year
- [00:06:23.250]as part of the d.ONE program.
- [00:06:25.500]So when you meet with me and Jamie to enroll in classes
- [00:06:28.620]you will be enrolling in the Introduction to Design course,
- [00:06:32.070]Design Thinking,
- [00:06:33.960]and either hand drawing or Computer Applications.
- [00:06:37.590]Only half of the students coming in
- [00:06:39.690]will be enrolling in Drawing,
- [00:06:41.580]and then the other half will take Computer Applications
- [00:06:44.040]and then you will switch in the spring semester.
- [00:06:47.250]You will also be enrolling in a Smart Start course.
- [00:06:50.670]Smart Start is a zero credit hour, four week course
- [00:06:53.940]taught by the Student Success Staff here within the college.
- [00:06:57.360]And we're really going to help students understand
- [00:07:00.600]the importance of university resources, your course syllabi
- [00:07:05.130]and how to understand how to read that,
- [00:07:08.610]understanding the attendance policies of your courses,
- [00:07:12.390]and really we will hone in quite a bit on time management.
- [00:07:16.050]Time management is the key for success
- [00:07:18.750]here within the College of Architecture.
- [00:07:21.060]We'll talk about goal setting, building relationships,
- [00:07:24.840]communicating professionally not only with your instructors,
- [00:07:28.440]but other partners across campus.
- [00:07:31.110]And then of course, meeting with your academic advisor.
- [00:07:35.880]During your advising meeting,
- [00:07:37.860]we will, prior to enrolling you,
- [00:07:41.070]help you set up a degree plan.
- [00:07:43.710]So the Degree Planner is a digital tool
- [00:07:47.730]in which we will take all of those boxes
- [00:07:50.100]that we saw on the flow chart,
- [00:07:52.230]and we will input those into the Degree Planner,
- [00:07:55.920]so that each semester when you go to register for classes,
- [00:07:58.770]we've already planned out
- [00:08:00.030]what courses you'll be taking each semester.
- [00:08:02.970]And you can click on say, fall semester of 2023.
- [00:08:07.620]And it will bring in the classes
- [00:08:09.780]that you had planned to take that semester.
- [00:08:12.270]Plans can change, so you can log back into Degree Planner
- [00:08:16.230]after your advising appointment
- [00:08:17.940]and add things like minors or move classes around.
- [00:08:22.380]But in general, it is a plan to help you
- [00:08:26.820]make that registration process easier each year.
- [00:08:31.620]Once you've enrolled in classes,
- [00:08:35.187]you can run what's called a Degree Audit.
- [00:08:37.410]A Degree Audit is another tool
- [00:08:39.960]to help you see what kind of progress you're making
- [00:08:43.890]on your academic degree.
- [00:08:45.810]And so, for example,
- [00:08:47.610]maybe some of you have taken dual enrollment
- [00:08:50.790]or AP credits in high school,
- [00:08:52.680]and you wanna see
- [00:08:53.513]how those are applying towards your degree.
- [00:08:56.100]You can log into MyRed.
- [00:08:57.690]On the homepage you should see the blue Degree Audit button,
- [00:09:02.190]and you can see the classes that you're enrolled in,
- [00:09:05.100]classes that you've already completed,
- [00:09:07.230]and the classes that are still remaining
- [00:09:08.790]to complete your degree.
- [00:09:10.620]All of these digital tools are wonderful
- [00:09:13.050]and help our students greatly to be successful,
- [00:09:16.440]but they're not designed to replace meeting
- [00:09:19.470]with your academic advisor each semester.
- [00:09:21.840]So you'll wanna be sure
- [00:09:22.680]that you either meet with Jamie or I each semester
- [00:09:24.810]to make sure you're on track for graduation.
- [00:09:28.710]Another tool that's important for you to be aware of
- [00:09:31.350]is the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:09:33.600]As a student coming to the university
- [00:09:35.490]you're automatically agreeing to abide
- [00:09:37.890]by the university policies and procedures.
- [00:09:40.680]So where do you find those?
- [00:09:41.970]What are they?
- [00:09:43.230]You can find those in the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:09:46.500]You can see here
- [00:09:47.730]this is a screenshot of what that looks like.
- [00:09:50.070]You can click on the Academic Policies tab
- [00:09:52.980]and read through the university policies.
- [00:09:54.810]And once you've done that,
- [00:09:56.610]you can click on the College of Architecture,
- [00:09:58.980]read about the college major requirements
- [00:10:02.310]as well as overall college policies.
- [00:10:05.790]Some of those policies might include grade requirements.
- [00:10:08.220]What grades do you have to get
- [00:10:09.930]for those classes to actually count towards your degree?
- [00:10:13.260]So core classes with your major
- [00:10:15.090]will all require a grade of C or better.
- [00:10:19.230]We also have who would like to get on the Dean's List.
- [00:10:22.590]That's usually something that students
- [00:10:24.990]are really happy to learn those requirements
- [00:10:29.220]and strive to meet those requirements.
- [00:10:31.620]So that is a 3.75 or higher GPA,
- [00:10:35.190]and you can find all of the details of what it requires
- [00:10:38.430]to get on the Dean's List within the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:10:43.050]And then other things like academic probation,
- [00:10:46.200]transfer policies, all of those things.
- [00:10:51.180]We also, within the college have a unique culture
- [00:10:53.850]in that you are in your studio based education courses
- [00:10:59.490]four hours, three days a week,
- [00:11:01.080]once you get to second year and higher.
- [00:11:02.640]And so that's a lot of time you're spending in one space
- [00:11:05.640]with a lot of different people.
- [00:11:07.530]And so the college has set forth some policies
- [00:11:11.160]regarding health of students in those studio spaces,
- [00:11:17.160]safety, watching out for your things,
- [00:11:19.740]for your neighbors' things, productivity,
- [00:11:22.350]we want you to show up to class on time,
- [00:11:25.170]be prepared and ready to go.
- [00:11:29.100]But what we like to focus on a lot
- [00:11:30.960]with incoming first year students
- [00:11:33.180]is the importance of attendance in your studio classes
- [00:11:36.300]in all of your classes.
- [00:11:38.250]For example, as a freshman
- [00:11:41.040]or first year student in our college,
- [00:11:42.870]you will take Design Making in the spring semester.
- [00:11:45.780]That course meets four hours, two days a week,
- [00:11:49.020]so Tuesday and Thursday.
- [00:11:51.300]And as you can imagine
- [00:11:53.400]if you miss a four hour class period,
- [00:11:55.860]that is a lot of information that you have not received.
- [00:12:00.570]And the instructors don't have the time in their day
- [00:12:05.400]to reteach a four hour class to you.
- [00:12:09.240]And you're not even gonna get the same kind of content
- [00:12:11.820]because it's an interactive class
- [00:12:13.890]where you're getting feedback from peers and faculty.
- [00:12:17.610]And so we know there are gonna be times when you're sick,
- [00:12:23.100]but we want you to save your absences
- [00:12:25.410]for when you really need them.
- [00:12:27.870]If you happen to be enrolled
- [00:12:29.460]in the 8:00 AM Design Making class,
- [00:12:31.800]and you're not a morning person
- [00:12:33.780]take preventative measures
- [00:12:35.610]to make sure that you're not sleeping in through your alarm.
- [00:12:38.850]Have a roommate wake you up,
- [00:12:40.260]have your parents call you, get an alarm.
- [00:12:43.830]So one student told me they got an alarm
- [00:12:45.450]that shakes their bed. (chuckles)
- [00:12:47.190]So whatever you need to do to be in class,
- [00:12:51.480]you will be more successful the more classes you attend
- [00:12:55.380]in the college.
- [00:12:56.880]So one other thing that I hear a lot
- [00:13:00.270]from incoming students or first year students
- [00:13:02.340]is that sometimes they don't go to class
- [00:13:04.830]because they're embarrassed or they're not prepared.
- [00:13:08.190]And I can tell you
- [00:13:09.480]that your faculty would rather have you come to class
- [00:13:12.690]and not have your assignment completely finished
- [00:13:15.540]than miss that four hour class period.
- [00:13:17.430]So just know they're there to help.
- [00:13:20.160]The more you communicate, if you are gonna be absent,
- [00:13:23.550]please do reach out before you're sick
- [00:13:26.190]or before you're absent if possible,
- [00:13:29.250]because maybe they'll be able to do something differently
- [00:13:32.250]to catch, maybe record a Zoom lecture or whatever else.
- [00:13:38.910]What other tools the instructor might have in place
- [00:13:41.220]to make sure that students who miss class are successful.
- [00:13:45.660]Also as a student coming to the university,
- [00:13:48.000]you are now the owner of your academic record.
- [00:13:50.790]So in high school and elementary school
- [00:13:53.160]your family had access to everything that you did.
- [00:13:56.370]They knew when you were missing an assignment,
- [00:13:59.160]when things were turned in late, when you did great,
- [00:14:01.320]when you didn't do well.
- [00:14:02.970]But in college only you're gonna have access
- [00:14:05.700]to that information.
- [00:14:07.170]Through a federal law
- [00:14:08.310]called Family Education Rights and Privacy Act,
- [00:14:12.368]faculty and staff on campus
- [00:14:13.980]aren't allowed to communicate with anyone other than you
- [00:14:17.310]about your academic record.
- [00:14:19.080]Now as advisors in the college,
- [00:14:21.480]we really want to encourage you to be open and honest
- [00:14:25.620]and share what's happening in your life
- [00:14:27.990]and in your education with your support system.
- [00:14:30.990]You can grant access to certain portions
- [00:14:33.900]of your MyRed account to a parent or guardian,
- [00:14:38.820]but just know that if a parent reaches out to us directly
- [00:14:42.150]without meeting with you and your advisor together,
- [00:14:46.620]we're probably not gonna be able to tell them too much
- [00:14:49.530]or answer too many questions.
- [00:14:51.390]So we will need to have written permission
- [00:14:54.330]from the student to speak with parents.
- [00:14:57.540]So be open and honest with your support system
- [00:14:59.940]and if we need to meet,
- [00:15:01.470]we can meet together at the same time,
- [00:15:03.780]so everyone is on the same page.
- [00:15:07.680]As I mentioned earlier,
- [00:15:09.480]some of the resources that advisors will refer you to
- [00:15:12.570]on a regular basis include some of these on the screen,
- [00:15:15.810]and I'll get a little bit more in depth on them.
- [00:15:18.540]The Center for Academic Success and Transition,
- [00:15:21.540]as I mentioned, time management is is the key to success
- [00:15:24.780]within the College of Architecture.
- [00:15:26.280]We will often refer students
- [00:15:27.960]to the Center for Academic Success and Transition
- [00:15:30.960]to one of their time management seminars,
- [00:15:32.970]which will teach them how to schedule out their week,
- [00:15:37.350]plan for when they're gonna go to class,
- [00:15:39.000]when they're gonna study each day,
- [00:15:41.700]all of those great things.
- [00:15:45.690]They also have great seminars
- [00:15:48.690]on note taking strategies and study skills.
- [00:15:52.350]One of the number one things
- [00:15:53.760]I hear from students coming from high school
- [00:15:56.430]is that they didn't really have to study as hard
- [00:15:58.590]as they might have to study in college.
- [00:16:01.770]And so they don't know if they're prepared to study.
- [00:16:05.370]Well, those are resources offered
- [00:16:07.530]through the Center for Academic Success and Transition
- [00:16:09.990]who we often refer to as CAST.
- [00:16:13.350]Another thing that I really wanna spend a lot of time
- [00:16:15.840]encouraging you on right now
- [00:16:17.370]is if you are a student
- [00:16:19.020]who in high school has had an accommodation plan
- [00:16:21.900]or needed help with a learning disability
- [00:16:24.660]or anything in that regard
- [00:16:29.340]then I highly recommend that you reach out
- [00:16:31.650]to the services for Students with Disabilities Office
- [00:16:34.980]and work with them over the summer
- [00:16:37.650]to transfer any documentation that's needed
- [00:16:40.410]to be able to get an accommodation plan
- [00:16:42.690]here at the university.
- [00:16:44.580]It is your responsibility
- [00:16:46.230]to get those services set up as soon as possible
- [00:16:51.630]so that you will have all of the resources available to you
- [00:16:55.110]to be successful.
- [00:16:58.740]So you can access their website
- [00:17:02.190]whether it's something like a mental health disability,
- [00:17:05.760]a learning disability, a physical disability.
- [00:17:10.620]There's a whole bunch of different types of scenarios
- [00:17:13.980]in which you might qualify for accommodations.
- [00:17:15.870]So please reach out to their website
- [00:17:17.310]to see if you might be eligible for one of those.
- [00:17:21.480]And then once you do,
- [00:17:22.740]if you do receive an accommodation plan
- [00:17:24.870]from the Services for Students with Disabilities Office,
- [00:17:27.870]that is not the last step.
- [00:17:29.910]Every semester that you take courses with new instructors,
- [00:17:33.390]it will be your responsibility to turn over
- [00:17:36.450]or hand over a copy of that accommodations plan
- [00:17:42.060]to your faculty members so that they know how to help you
- [00:17:44.490]be the most successful in their classes.
- [00:17:48.000]If you have any questions about scholarships,
- [00:17:51.000]financial aid, those types of things,
- [00:17:53.640]Husker Hub is your one-stop resource on campus.
- [00:17:56.400]They offer in-person meetings, virtual meetings.
- [00:18:00.660]There's a lot of ways to get all the information
- [00:18:02.520]that you need from that office.
- [00:18:04.290]Career Services, the Math Resource room,
- [00:18:07.170]unless you've taken calculus in high school
- [00:18:09.030]for college credit,
- [00:18:09.870]everybody's going to be taking math your first year with us,
- [00:18:14.730]and we highly encourage students
- [00:18:16.860]to take advantage of their free tutoring
- [00:18:18.510]through the Math Resource Center.
- [00:18:20.460]The first week of school,
- [00:18:21.870]you'll be able to find out what the hours are gonna be
- [00:18:24.150]of the Math Resource room in your course syllabus.
- [00:18:27.750]Likely any architecture students
- [00:18:30.870]who've already taken calculus,
- [00:18:32.100]you might be taking physics your first year.
- [00:18:34.410]They have similar resource room as math.
- [00:18:38.670]And then we have Counseling and Psychological Services
- [00:18:42.180]whether you need one-on-one counseling
- [00:18:45.930]or you have an addiction or eating disorder
- [00:18:51.300]or something that you need assistance with,
- [00:18:53.730]there's great resources on campus
- [00:18:55.500]through the Counseling and Psychological Services Office
- [00:18:58.350]which we refer to as CAPS.
- [00:19:00.570]And so if you click on their link here on the picture,
- [00:19:03.990]it will take you to the website
- [00:19:05.370]and give you more in-depth details
- [00:19:06.990]about the services that they offer.
- [00:19:08.940]And then of course, there's the University Health Center.
- [00:19:10.980]Oftentimes, the instructors might state in their syllabus
- [00:19:13.920]that they want to receive a doctor's note.
- [00:19:18.120]If you're sick, please do feel free
- [00:19:21.030]to utilize those university health services
- [00:19:25.320]in those instances.
- [00:19:29.430]Finally, we're gonna talk about peer mentors.
- [00:19:31.950]Within the college, we offer all first year students
- [00:19:35.400]an opportunity to have an upper level mentor
- [00:19:38.610]who's at least a third year or higher student in your major.
- [00:19:41.940]They've all gone through what you're gonna be going through
- [00:19:44.700]in this first year, and they're a great resource for you
- [00:19:47.820]whether you need additional help
- [00:19:50.820]with understanding how to use a computer software
- [00:19:53.700]or where to get your art supplies, they're great resource.
- [00:19:59.340]They will join you and us
- [00:20:01.680]in the Smart Start course for the first four weeks.
- [00:20:04.200]And then they'll have different fun things
- [00:20:05.730]for you to do with them throughout the school year.
- [00:20:09.300]You'll receive notification about your peer mentor
- [00:20:12.180]probably in the month of August,
- [00:20:14.040]a couple weeks before school starts.
- [00:20:18.420]Thank you for joining me
- [00:20:19.620]for the College of Architecture advising session.
- [00:20:22.560]If you have questions throughout summer,
- [00:20:24.510]please reach out to me.
- [00:20:25.800]My contact information is on the screen
- [00:20:28.170]or your academic advisor, Jamie Mastera.
- [00:20:30.900]We can't wait to see you this fall.
