- [00:00:01.290]Hi, my name is Bonnie Shuda
- [00:00:02.753]and I'm the director of Engineering Scholar Programs
- [00:00:05.550]for the University of Nebraska Lincoln's
- [00:00:07.350]College of Engineering.
- [00:00:08.183]Today, I'm really excited to be sharing with you folks
- [00:00:11.370]and our future scholars
- [00:00:12.600]a little bit about what you can expect this coming summer
- [00:00:15.360]and to your first year
- [00:00:16.830]in the Peter Kiewit Foundation's Engineering Academy.
- [00:00:19.710]I know I speak for our whole team
- [00:00:21.150]when I say we're so excited to welcome you to campus
- [00:00:23.610]and be able to work with you this coming year.
- [00:00:26.220]A little snapshot of our agenda for the day.
- [00:00:28.800]We'll be discussing summer support,
- [00:00:31.447]some scholarship questions, our first in-person experience,
- [00:00:35.220]the Campus Readiness Retreat,
- [00:00:37.290]the importance of our learning community,
- [00:00:39.330]your required ENGR 10 seminar.
- [00:00:41.760]And then finally, I'm gonna touch a little bit
- [00:00:43.650]on some of the professional development opportunities
- [00:00:45.960]you get while you're a student with us.
- [00:00:47.970]First, let's talk about summer.
- [00:00:49.620]As you already should know,
- [00:00:51.480]you're working in your Summer Modules in Canvas.
- [00:00:54.090]This is just to serve as a reminder for you
- [00:00:56.280]that you wanna keep up to date with those required modules
- [00:00:59.880]as they prepare you for school before you come this fall
- [00:01:03.030]or summer camp as I know they're being called.
- [00:01:06.540]Next, you should already know if you are eligible
- [00:01:09.750]to attend the Engineering Bridge Program.
- [00:01:12.390]And so this is just a friendly reminder
- [00:01:14.430]that we're excited to have you in our bridge program.
- [00:01:17.160]If you meet that criteria,
- [00:01:19.140]to work on those math and physics skills,
- [00:01:20.667]and that it will be a really good experience
- [00:01:22.770]for you to prepare you for this coming fall.
- [00:01:25.980]Next, scholarship questions.
- [00:01:28.530]This is an all important topic, right?
- [00:01:30.870]As you know, we have lots of financial benefits
- [00:01:33.630]with this scholarship program.
- [00:01:35.460]This is also what we would call a last in scholarship,
- [00:01:39.420]meaning your other scholarships get applied first
- [00:01:41.940]and then we pay the rest of your bill
- [00:01:44.670]so you theoretically wouldn't have any charges.
- [00:01:47.562]Of course, there's some fine print and details on here.
- [00:01:50.520]We do have an Assistant Director of Recruitment
- [00:01:52.590]and Retention, Maggie Miller,
- [00:01:54.330]will be able to answer all your questions
- [00:01:56.040]related to this, but what you need to know now
- [00:01:59.100]is that you can reach out to Maggie if you have questions.
- [00:02:01.170]Also, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid,
- [00:02:04.680]the website I have pulled here on the screen.
- [00:02:07.050]They're also experts in this area.
- [00:02:08.970]It will be who you to send all your externals in early,
- [00:02:12.210]and that will make it easier when we apply your aid.
- [00:02:15.360]You will see your PKFEA aid applied in fall,
- [00:02:19.680]around that first week of classes
- [00:02:21.510]basically because we have to wait
- [00:02:22.710]for all of your other scholarships to post first.
- [00:02:25.080]So don't worry
- [00:02:25.913]if you don't see it on your account right away.
- [00:02:28.200]We'll definitely be there
- [00:02:29.610]and ready to go before that first bill is due.
- [00:02:32.640]But again, we're happy to answer any questions
- [00:02:34.440]in the meantime.
- [00:02:36.090]So your first campus experience with us
- [00:02:38.460]is called the Campus Readiness Retreat.
- [00:02:41.280]We're really excited about this program.
- [00:02:43.500]It occurs in both our Lincoln and our Omaha campuses
- [00:02:46.050]since we have students in both areas,
- [00:02:47.820]but we have special days where everyone comes together.
- [00:02:51.060]Last year, we did a scavenger hunt,
- [00:02:52.770]so folks can learn more about their individual campuses.
- [00:02:56.100]We learned from some of our current engineering students
- [00:02:59.400]about what engineering is
- [00:03:00.660]and gotta do some really wonderful activities with them.
- [00:03:04.110]We made a trip to Carol Joy Holling,
- [00:03:06.780]which is between Lincoln and Omaha,
- [00:03:08.610]and we're able to do a low trust course
- [00:03:11.880]and really develop that teamwork
- [00:03:14.100]because we'll be together right the next four years.
- [00:03:16.800]And we have the opportunity to have a luncheon
- [00:03:19.230]at the end of the event,
- [00:03:20.923]where you could interact with some staff
- [00:03:23.520]from the foundation that is funding this program,
- [00:03:26.250]as well as some work faculty.
- [00:03:27.780]And those connections so early on are truly are invaluable.
- [00:03:31.830]So just keep an eye out on your email
- [00:03:33.450]and they'll get all the details that you need
- [00:03:35.550]about this Campus Readiness Retreat coming soon.
- [00:03:39.330]Next thing I wanna touch on is our learning community.
- [00:03:41.670]As you know,
- [00:03:42.503]this is called a Living Learning Community, right?
- [00:03:45.022]One of the requirements of our program,
- [00:03:47.310]and you'll learn this when you get on campus,
- [00:03:49.200]is being involved in an activity, right?
- [00:03:51.690]So before you get here,
- [00:03:53.370]you might peruse our websites and say,
- [00:03:55.327]"Hey, what kinds of clubs are engineering students in?"
- [00:03:58.170]Or, "Maybe what other things
- [00:03:59.340]on campus do I wanna get involved in?
- [00:04:00.960]What's really important to me?"
- [00:04:02.580]If you're excited about college now
- [00:04:04.170]and you're already prepping for your housing situation
- [00:04:06.930]and your decorations there,
- [00:04:07.830]you also might think about the clubs
- [00:04:09.150]you wanna get involved in.
- [00:04:10.500]We have a club fair in the College of Engineering
- [00:04:12.240]that you're able to attend right after school starts.
- [00:04:15.180]It's a great fun time, free food.
- [00:04:16.950]That's a theme in college you'll learn,
- [00:04:18.702]but you could even start that now.
- [00:04:21.210]Some other stuff I wanna know are the social activities.
- [00:04:24.030]This program, of course, really is about community building
- [00:04:27.180]and supporting women in engineering,
- [00:04:29.070]and we have a really heavy academic component
- [00:04:31.290]where we can help support you in those areas.
- [00:04:33.390]But we do know it's important to have those social events
- [00:04:35.790]that also build that community, right?
- [00:04:38.490]So you can see a couple snapshots here are on the screen
- [00:04:41.130]of what we did last year,
- [00:04:42.180]and there'll be lots of wonderful ways
- [00:04:43.950]for you to get involved this coming year.
- [00:04:46.170]And finally, the community living, that's a big part of it.
- [00:04:49.710]Our first year students live in able,
- [00:04:51.660]and so that will all be arranged with housing,
- [00:04:54.510]so you can live with the rest of your scholar community.
- [00:04:58.260]Next, I wanna remind you about our ENGR 10 seminar.
- [00:05:01.800]This is a required class for all of our students
- [00:05:04.620]and it will last the whole semester.
- [00:05:06.540]You learn a little bit about
- [00:05:07.620]our complete engineer competencies.
- [00:05:09.870]If you haven't heard about those yet, you will very soon.
- [00:05:12.840]They're the non-technical skills
- [00:05:15.120]that we know our students need to be successful,
- [00:05:17.520]in addition to all those other skills.
- [00:05:19.440]Whether you go into engineering, computing, or construction.
- [00:05:22.650]It's a wonderful class for you to work with your cohort
- [00:05:25.050]every single week.
- [00:05:26.370]It's taught by our Assistant Director
- [00:05:28.590]of Teaching and Programming, Erin Omar.
- [00:05:31.920]And then we also sometimes
- [00:05:33.210]are able to get industry folks to come in,
- [00:05:35.520]and you should be automatically enrolled in this,
- [00:05:37.920]but just keep an eye out for in your schedule
- [00:05:40.080]and know that you have this special section.
- [00:05:42.990]The rest of engineering students are in general sections
- [00:05:46.350]but our cohort program is there
- [00:05:47.940]in their own individual section.
- [00:05:50.910]All right, and last but not least,
- [00:05:52.500]to touch on some other professional development
- [00:05:54.360]you'll get around the year.
- [00:05:55.770]As you heard me say,
- [00:05:56.640]we have different facets of this program
- [00:05:58.830]that are so important to us and that we wanna ensure
- [00:06:00.930]you have to be a successful college student,
- [00:06:03.120]and part of that is professional development.
- [00:06:05.220]So first, I have listed Success Coaching.
- [00:06:07.680]This is when you meet
- [00:06:08.790]with one of our trained success coaches.
- [00:06:11.746]We have both coordinators and assistant directors
- [00:06:14.520]that meet with our students directly.
- [00:06:16.530]These folks have graduate degrees in working with students.
- [00:06:20.250]This is what they do.
- [00:06:21.510]They're professionals in this area.
- [00:06:23.430]That means whether you're struggling
- [00:06:25.080]with a mental health issue, just with calculus,
- [00:06:28.170]or even if things are going great,
- [00:06:29.670]or you don't know how to do laundry, right?
- [00:06:31.950]They might not be teaching you how to do laundry,
- [00:06:33.660]but they can give you the resources
- [00:06:35.250]for all of those other things
- [00:06:36.540]to ensure that you have that smooth transition on campus,
- [00:06:39.390]you have a community around you to support you,
- [00:06:41.460]and that you really feel empowered
- [00:06:42.960]to pursue your degree and follow whatever you would like to.
- [00:06:46.530]So it's a really huge part of our program here.
- [00:06:49.410]And finally, guest speakers.
- [00:06:50.790]I kind of alluded to this a little bit with ENGR 10,
- [00:06:53.670]but we have mentorship as well as industry folks
- [00:06:56.670]who can serve as industry mentors, right?
- [00:06:59.580]Who come and speak to our students.
- [00:07:01.170]Some of the photos on the screen are from last year.
- [00:07:02.970]We had a speaker come from Kiewit Corporation,
- [00:07:06.420]and she and a colleague of hers who isn't in that photo
- [00:07:10.230]but also was a lovely, wonderful speaker,
- [00:07:13.020]really shared with us,
- [00:07:13.950]what does it mean to be a woman in these fields?
- [00:07:17.050]What challenges have they encountered?
- [00:07:19.350]And what support have they encountered, right?
- [00:07:21.780]Because we wanna do everything that we can,
- [00:07:23.370]set you up for your best success here
- [00:07:25.740]when you get to college.
- [00:07:27.780]All right, so in sum,
- [00:07:28.831]again, we're really excited to see you.
- [00:07:31.290]Be sure to keep up in those Summer Modules.
- [00:07:33.930]And of course, you're very welcome to contact us
- [00:07:36.300]about anything academy-related or even otherwise.
- [00:07:39.900]We tend to be a pretty good resource.
- [00:07:41.460]So if you're having an issue with something else on campus,
- [00:07:44.310]we're happy to liaise to help you fix that issue.
- [00:07:47.430]Our general email is below,
- [00:07:49.410]and we'll make sure that we get you guided
- [00:07:51.420]and sent to where you need to go.
- [00:07:52.890]So thank you so much
- [00:07:54.060]and we're excited to see you in person this fall.
