- [00:00:01.350]Hi, everyone, and welcome.
- [00:00:02.880]My name is Emily Madisen.
- [00:00:04.080]I'm a Learning Communities Coordinator here at UNL,
- [00:00:06.540]and I'm so excited to get to talk to you a little bit
- [00:00:08.160]about the Peer Connections program today.
- [00:00:10.350]And so you might be thinking, "What is Peer Connections,
- [00:00:12.030]or why should I be interested in this?"
- [00:00:13.770]And so Peer Connections is really focused
- [00:00:15.360]on making sure every student has a support system
- [00:00:18.360]and a community here on campus.
- [00:00:20.010]And so for anyone who might not already be a part
- [00:00:21.870]of another program like Learning Communities,
- [00:00:23.993]Thompson Scholars, Honors, something like that,
- [00:00:26.670]this could be a great program for you
- [00:00:28.350]to help you find that community here on campus.
- [00:00:31.260]So you get to campus, check, you've done it.
- [00:00:33.840]Now what, right?
- [00:00:35.370]Peer Connections is a seminar course
- [00:00:36.900]that can help you make a smooth transition to college
- [00:00:39.180]and really set you up for success in your first year.
- [00:00:42.090]And so what we're really gonna help you focus on
- [00:00:43.740]is finding your passion and digging into what it is
- [00:00:46.830]that you really care about,
- [00:00:48.390]helping you set goals for your college experience,
- [00:00:50.250]and figuring out how are you actually gonna achieve those,
- [00:00:52.620]helping you learn the who's who
- [00:00:54.150]and the what's where of campus,
- [00:00:56.010]and most importantly, meeting those new friends in a class
- [00:00:58.440]with no more than 26 other first-year incoming students.
- [00:01:02.970]And so this course is taught
- [00:01:04.740]by two upperclassmen peer mentors.
- [00:01:07.470]They've made it out of their freshman year alive
- [00:01:09.420]and can help share their experience,
- [00:01:11.280]what worked well for them, what didn't.
- [00:01:13.110]And not only will you get to see them in the seminar course,
- [00:01:16.200]but they also hold weekly office hours
- [00:01:18.060]where you can stop in, ask questions, pick their brains,
- [00:01:21.540]and really just be a resource for you,
- [00:01:23.880]especially since they've already been where you're at,
- [00:01:26.970]and so they can really help you figure out and navigate
- [00:01:29.700]all of the new challenges that you may be facing.
- [00:01:32.550]And then the course is built around
- [00:01:34.140]the Husker POWER Seminar, is a UGEP 100 seminar course.
- [00:01:38.940]And so POWER stands for purpose, ownership, well-being,
- [00:01:42.120]engagement, and relationships.
- [00:01:43.740]So purpose is all about finding your reason
- [00:01:45.660]for being here at UNL.
- [00:01:47.280]Ownership is all about owning your own story
- [00:01:49.830]and learning from those who may have
- [00:01:51.450]a totally different background or experiences.
- [00:01:55.530]Well-being is all about learning about what it is for you
- [00:01:58.800]to be well in all areas of your life.
- [00:02:01.740]Engagement is focused on helping you get involved,
- [00:02:05.010]not only here in the campus community,
- [00:02:06.360]but also in the larger Lincoln community.
- [00:02:08.370]And then relationships is all about building
- [00:02:10.080]those friendships and that support network
- [00:02:12.060]that's gonna be your community here on campus.
- [00:02:15.390]And so the nuts and bolts, a little bit of the course,
- [00:02:17.340]are Peer Connections is a 0-credit course,
- [00:02:19.680]which means you don't have to pay any tuition for it
- [00:02:21.330]which is awesome.
- [00:02:22.590]The only fee you'll pay is the $80 course fee,
- [00:02:24.660]and that covers the cost of the materials
- [00:02:26.910]and the salaries for the peer mentors.
- [00:02:29.250]All peer mentor sections, or all Peer Connections sections
- [00:02:32.460]I should say, meet Tuesdays from 3:30-4:20.
- [00:02:36.360]And just a reminder, that if you are a part of anything
- [00:02:38.730]like Learning Communities, Thompson Scholars, Greek life,
- [00:02:41.160]or anything like that, then you would unfortunately
- [00:02:43.710]not be eligible for this program.
- [00:02:45.300]But if you are, and you wanna enroll,
- [00:02:47.340]definitely let your advisor know
- [00:02:48.420]during your academic advising appointment
- [00:02:50.610]and they can help you get all signed up for the course.
- [00:02:52.560]So, thank you so much for checking us out
- [00:02:56.520]and if you have any questions, definitely feel free
- [00:02:58.560]to reach out.
- [00:02:59.393]I put our program email and phone number on there,
- [00:03:02.190]so definitely let us know
- [00:03:03.300]if there's anything we can help with.
- [00:03:05.010]But otherwise, thank you so much for coming
- [00:03:06.900]and listening to this presentation
- [00:03:08.700]and we are so excited to see you here in the fall
- [00:03:10.830]and hopefully in a Peer Connections course.
- [00:03:12.510]So, have a great rest of your day.
