- [00:00:02.400]Hi, my name is Lori Bennett Baumli.
- [00:00:04.347]I'm the Assistant Director of Parking
- [00:00:05.940]and Transit Services here at UNL.
- [00:00:10.410]You have decided to join me today
- [00:00:13.380]for the Parking and Transit Services session,
- [00:00:18.180]Parking and Bus Services for Students.
- [00:00:23.910]Parking and Transit Services is an auxiliary department
- [00:00:26.940]at UNL, which means we do not receive state tuition,
- [00:00:31.290]or federal dollars, all of our revenue is generated
- [00:00:34.860]by the sale of permits, special events, and citations.
- [00:00:40.590]We use that money for all of our operations and personnel.
- [00:00:44.760]So, for example, the upkeep of the garages,
- [00:00:47.940]the lighting in the garages, lighting in the parking lots,
- [00:00:51.000]security cameras in the garages,
- [00:00:52.590]and on surface lots, snow removal,
- [00:00:55.110]resurfacing, maintenance in the garage every year
- [00:00:58.590]all of that is generated through the sale
- [00:01:01.530]of the permits, special events, and citations.
- [00:01:10.290]Our website is parkingunl.edu.
- [00:01:13.650]On the left-hand side, you will see three lines.
- [00:01:17.490]When you hover over this, it will have a dropdown box,
- [00:01:21.090]which will show all the different links, and information
- [00:01:24.810]associated with Parking and Transit Services.
- [00:01:29.906]That is parking unl.edu.
- [00:01:35.100]One of the most important ones for a new student
- [00:01:38.310]to campus is the Permit Purchase Guide.
- [00:01:42.660]The Permit Purchase Guide can be found just right
- [00:01:45.450]under that parking first dropdown second...
- [00:01:51.060]Or first link there.
- [00:01:57.960]Students, when they purchase their permit,
- [00:02:01.530]they will need to have some information.
- [00:02:03.090]They'll need their license plate,
- [00:02:05.520]and their vehicle information,
- [00:02:07.200]their NCard, their campus credentials.
- [00:02:09.840]I do wanna stress that the license plate
- [00:02:12.180]must be entered without dashes or spaces.
- [00:02:16.740]We did transition to license plate recognition
- [00:02:18.990]on July 1st, 2022, so the license plate
- [00:02:22.800]actually serves as the permit.
- [00:02:26.100]The garage permit holders do receive a physical permit
- [00:02:29.310]because our gates are operated
- [00:02:31.140]by radio frequency identifiers.
- [00:02:33.750]There's a little antenna inside those garage hang tags
- [00:02:37.320]that the equipment picks up to raise and lower those gates.
- [00:02:42.030]When you start the steps to purchase a permit guide,
- [00:02:45.390]you'll choose whether your student
- [00:02:47.580]is a commuter student, or a residence student.
- [00:02:51.570]Our permits are based on kind of where they live,
- [00:02:56.400]different prices for the permits, the surface lots,
- [00:03:01.740]which would be area R01, R02,
- [00:03:06.150]area E on east campus, or the commuter, area C
- [00:03:10.410]those are $405 for the nine month permit,
- [00:03:14.400]or 540 for an annual permit.
- [00:03:17.610]Residential students do not have
- [00:03:19.740]a choice to purchase an annual permit,
- [00:03:21.630]only commuter students may purchase an annual permit.
- [00:03:24.990]If your student, after their academic year,
- [00:03:28.140]are going to be on campus during the summer
- [00:03:30.180]either taking classes, or working,
- [00:03:31.800]they can come in to our office during finals week
- [00:03:34.440]of second semester to purchase a summer permit.
- [00:03:38.070]The 14th & Avery Garage for the nine month is 459,
- [00:03:41.940]or 612 for the annual permit.
- [00:03:47.190]The 14th & Avery is the most economical garage.
- [00:03:50.250]It's the largest garage we have,
- [00:03:52.290]and it's on the north edge of campus.
- [00:03:55.440]The rest of the garages: stadium dry parking garage,
- [00:03:58.222]17th & R, 18th & R, and 19th & Vine garages
- [00:04:02.490]are 486 for the academic year, or nine month permit,
- [00:04:06.270]or 648 for the annual permit.
- [00:04:09.900]We do have three reserved surface lots for students.
- [00:04:14.010]These are closer to the core of campus,
- [00:04:15.900]so some students do like that.
- [00:04:18.990]They are guaranteed a spot in those lots.
- [00:04:21.690]If they can't find a spot, they can call us,
- [00:04:23.820]and we will tow out of those lots,
- [00:04:26.100]so that student can find a parking place.
- [00:04:29.370]Those are reserved because they are close to campus,
- [00:04:31.680]and they are guaranteed a spot, 729 for the nine month,
- [00:04:35.790]or 972 for the academic year.. Or the annual.
- [00:04:40.350]The perimeter permit is our most economical.
- [00:04:43.740]We call them perimeter because they're
- [00:04:45.120]on the very north edge of campus.
- [00:04:47.790]We have one at 1001 Y Street,
- [00:04:50.490]which is across the railroad tracks.
- [00:04:52.410]To access that by foot, you go over the pedestrian bridge
- [00:04:56.130]that's located just by the stadium.
- [00:04:59.880]The next large perimeter lot that we have
- [00:05:02.340]is on the big lot just south of the Devaney Center.
- [00:05:10.920]Our refund policy was updated by our administration
- [00:05:15.150]in fall of 2020, so it does follow
- [00:05:20.730]the same calendar as housing, or the tuition refunds.
- [00:05:29.340]So if your permit is returned within the first two weeks
- [00:05:32.580]of the semester, it's a 100% refund.
- [00:05:35.580]If it's returned during the third week
- [00:05:37.200]of first semester, it's a 75% refund.
- [00:05:40.200]Starting with the fourth week through the second week
- [00:05:43.590]of second semester, it's a 50% refund.
- [00:05:47.730]The third week of second semester, is a 25% refund.
- [00:05:51.840]After that date, there is no refund
- [00:05:53.940]for any nine month permit.
- [00:05:56.040]If your student has an annual permit,
- [00:05:58.110]and they're a commuter student,
- [00:05:59.940]and return it prior to finals, or that week of finals
- [00:06:03.480]of second semester, we will refund that summer portion.
- [00:06:10.800]We have maps on our website, this will help
- [00:06:13.170]your student kind of become familiar
- [00:06:15.780]with the different lots, and where they are.
- [00:06:19.110]Your student may have a residential permit,
- [00:06:22.170]let's say an R01 permit.
- [00:06:25.290]During the core hours of campus,
- [00:06:27.810]every student is expected to be in their assigned area
- [00:06:31.410]unless they're going to the opposite campus.
- [00:06:33.960]If they're going to the opposite campus
- [00:06:35.580]during core hours, which is 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM,
- [00:06:39.180]they may park in the commuter lots of the opposite campus.
- [00:06:44.850]So I would encourage your student to look
- [00:06:46.740]at these maps and become familiar.
- [00:06:50.400]When I talked about permits being based on
- [00:06:52.740]where your student lives here
- [00:06:54.870]is the map of the residential areas
- [00:06:57.780]for both City Campus and East Campus.
- [00:07:01.020]If your student lives in like Harper Schram Smith,
- [00:07:04.890]or the Village, they would purchase an R01,
- [00:07:08.490]or the 14th & Avery parking garage.
- [00:07:11.670]If your student lives in Knoll University Suites,
- [00:07:15.060]Eastside Suites, Selleck, or Greek housing
- [00:07:19.470]they would go to that southeast corner of campus,
- [00:07:23.280]and purchase an R02, a 17th & R garage,
- [00:07:27.060]or an 18th & R garage.
- [00:07:28.920]The 18th & R garage is considered
- [00:07:30.720]our residential garage, so we will sell that...
- [00:07:34.770]We will sell those spots... We open up that,
- [00:07:39.780]the 17th & R garage doesn't have as many residential permits
- [00:07:42.690]because it is also a commuter garage, faculty staff garage,
- [00:07:46.710]and then also for hourly parking
- [00:07:49.560]for visitors that come to campus.
- [00:07:51.210]Or if a student doesn't have a permit
- [00:07:53.400]they can certainly pay hourly in the garage.
- [00:07:55.980]On East Campus, so people that live,
- [00:07:57.990]or students that live in Massengale Residential Center
- [00:08:01.440]they would purchase a surface lot area E.
- [00:08:04.230]We do not have any garages on East Campus.
- [00:08:09.870]The rules and regulations can also be found on our website.
- [00:08:12.690]It's important that your student become aware of these.
- [00:08:14.760]They do indicate through the permit purchase process
- [00:08:18.000]that they've become familiar
- [00:08:19.740]with those rules and regulations.
- [00:08:22.290]If they happen to get a warning,
- [00:08:24.420]we encourage them to call us,
- [00:08:25.830]so they can talk through why they got a warning.
- [00:08:29.880]If they park in an area where they're not supposed to,
- [00:08:32.580]for example, they might get a warning for parking
- [00:08:34.560]in an unauthorized area during those core hours of campus.
- [00:08:39.270]But encourage them to read those rules,
- [00:08:42.090]and give us a call if they have any questions.
- [00:08:46.770]Students pay a transit fee,
- [00:08:50.190]Parking and Transit Services contracts
- [00:08:53.160]with the city of Lincoln's StarTran Bus
- [00:08:55.800]to provide bus service for campus,
- [00:08:57.930]so that these routes are specifically UNL routes.
- [00:09:02.940]If we didn't have that contract, the routes would not exist.
- [00:09:06.150]So we do have two main ones, the 24 and the 25.
- [00:09:10.350]Those are the buses that go from East Campus to City Campus.
- [00:09:14.490]There's two buses on each route.
- [00:09:16.680]It takes about 15 minutes between buses.
- [00:09:19.830]And the various stops can be seen on the map.
- [00:09:26.460]This map is also located on our website.
- [00:09:30.870]We also have the 22 route, which has two buses on it.
- [00:09:35.550]It, I think, could be a little bit longer,
- [00:09:37.680]like 20 minutes between those stops.
- [00:09:39.570]So your student will have to plan accordingly.
- [00:09:41.760]But that route goes from City Campus
- [00:09:44.100]to Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:09:47.760]We do have a van operated by Parking and Transit Services
- [00:09:52.710]for what used to be Route 23 on StarTran.
- [00:09:57.000]Because of low ridership, we actually do just provide
- [00:09:59.850]that van service between East Campus
- [00:10:02.640]and Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:10:09.000]Football has always been a big day here in Lincoln.
- [00:10:12.990]Because of that, we do have special rules
- [00:10:15.600]for game day parking.
- [00:10:17.190]Now, residential students, because we consider
- [00:10:19.620]their residential permit where they store their vehicle,
- [00:10:23.400]they are not required to move their vehicle on game day.
- [00:10:26.700]Commuter students cannot park
- [00:10:29.280]in their regularly assigned lots on game day.
- [00:10:32.310]They would actually park where these slashed areas are.
- [00:10:38.100]So that's the Boathouse lot.
- [00:10:39.600]We also have Devaney, or Business Services Complex
- [00:10:43.380]where commuter students can park
- [00:10:45.000]without paying for that game day parking.
- [00:10:49.200]The yellow lots that you see here are all booster lots.
- [00:10:52.410]Boosters purchase their parking
- [00:10:54.120]when they purchase their season tickets.
- [00:10:58.230]So those are reserved for those boosters.
- [00:11:01.950]Now, residential students will receive in the mail
- [00:11:05.070]the first week of school event stickers that will go
- [00:11:09.240]on the windshield inside by the lower driver's side corner.
- [00:11:14.970]This sticker is removable and re-positionable.
- [00:11:17.370]So if your student has more than one family vehicle
- [00:11:19.650]associated to their permit,
- [00:11:21.840]they can move that between vehicles.
- [00:11:24.780]What this event sticker does is show the lot attendant
- [00:11:28.110]that your student has a valid parking permit and can park
- [00:11:31.050]in their assigned area without paying the $25 fee.
- [00:11:34.890]Now, garage permit holders don't need
- [00:11:36.720]the event sticker because they have that hang tag.
- [00:11:39.840]So if they're venturing out on game day
- [00:11:42.960]they want to display that hang tag,
- [00:11:45.930]so the lot attendants will let them park in their area.
- [00:11:51.930]Again, this has been Parking and bus services for students
- [00:11:55.230]I'm Lori Bennett Baumli.
