- [00:00:01.650]Hi, everyone and welcome.
- [00:00:03.180]My name is Emily Madsen.
- [00:00:04.470]I'm a Learning Communities Coordinator here at UNL.
- [00:00:07.260]And I just wanna take a little bit of time to let you know
- [00:00:09.390]about what the Learning Communities program is
- [00:00:11.430]and what you can expect from the program
- [00:00:13.020]once you get here in the fall.
- [00:00:16.050]Learning Communities is based around three maintenance,
- [00:00:18.600]live, learn, and connect.
- [00:00:20.070]The first one, live,
- [00:00:21.120]is about you all living together
- [00:00:23.430]on the same floor in the residence hall.
- [00:00:25.523]And so the majority of our learning communities
- [00:00:27.810]are housed in Abel Hall,
- [00:00:29.250]but we do have a few over on East Campus
- [00:00:31.590]as well as University Suites.
- [00:00:33.150]Our East Campus learning communities
- [00:00:34.650]are usually based around animal science, agriculture,
- [00:00:37.380]something like that.
- [00:00:38.580]And then our prison learning community isn't in person.
- [00:00:42.188]And so you'll live with those other students
- [00:00:44.100]on the same floor of the residence hall
- [00:00:45.560]in your learning community.
- [00:00:46.800]And so this just really gives you an opportunity
- [00:00:48.770]to start building your campus community
- [00:00:50.940]from day one right when you move in
- [00:00:53.310]and you'll already have people who are
- [00:00:54.690]in your same major area of study
- [00:00:56.850]or have a shared identity or interest surrounding you
- [00:01:00.450]within your hall,
- [00:01:01.283]so that really just gives you an opportunity to
- [00:01:02.790]start building those connections early on.
- [00:01:06.750]Learning, you will all take one to three shared courses
- [00:01:09.690]within your learning community each semester.
- [00:01:12.030]And so this is just a great opportunity to kind
- [00:01:14.490]of allow you all to have a group
- [00:01:17.790]of people you already recognize
- [00:01:19.200]on day one when you walk into class,
- [00:01:20.700]you already have some on your faces,
- [00:01:22.560]you'll have some people to sit with.
- [00:01:24.180]And then when it comes to maybe your first big test
- [00:01:26.780]or a big project or something like that,
- [00:01:28.734]you've got a built-in study group,
- [00:01:30.600]because you have all these people on your floor
- [00:01:32.700]you already know who are in the same classes as you.
- [00:01:34.770]So it just really makes that transition a little bit easier
- [00:01:38.190]and hopefully allows you to find those who
- [00:01:42.810]maybe have shared interest
- [00:01:43.680]and things like that a little bit easier.
- [00:01:46.140]So a really great opportunity there.
- [00:01:50.550]And then our last tenant is Connect,
- [00:01:52.380]and one of our most fun ones.
- [00:01:53.640]So not only will you connect with the other students
- [00:01:55.860]in your learning community,
- [00:01:56.693]but you'll also connect
- [00:01:57.600]with your upper classroom peer mentor
- [00:01:59.145]and then your faculty or staff sponsor.
- [00:02:02.100]So the upper classroom peer mentors
- [00:02:03.870]will hold a weekly floor hour.
- [00:02:06.777]And so that is two hours a week that your mentors
- [00:02:09.630]is on the floor available to the students.
- [00:02:12.030]A lot of times they'll be fun activities like a movie night
- [00:02:14.400]or game night or something like that.
- [00:02:16.230]Other nights might be a study night,
- [00:02:17.790]especially if there's a big test coming up,
- [00:02:19.200]something like that.
- [00:02:20.250]It's probably whatever the students wanna do,
- [00:02:21.720]but it's just an opportunity for you to get to continue
- [00:02:24.030]to build that community
- [00:02:25.020]with those other students in the learning community
- [00:02:26.400]and your peer mentor.
- [00:02:27.930]And then we also will have the mentors meet
- [00:02:30.840]with each student a couple times each semester
- [00:02:33.240]just to check in one-on-one, see how they're doing,
- [00:02:35.610]do you need anything?
- [00:02:37.350]Is there any kind of challenges you're facing?
- [00:02:38.970]Is there any other support that you need?
- [00:02:40.290]Those kinds of things.
- [00:02:41.940]And then the most fun part is our events.
- [00:02:45.090]So these are opportunities for our students to do both,
- [00:02:49.320]some fun activities to get to build community
- [00:02:52.432]and just kind of have some relaxation
- [00:02:54.690]or get out and do something different.
- [00:02:56.272]But we'll also have some that are more academic
- [00:02:58.410]or pre-professional based.
- [00:03:00.060]And so some of those fun ones could be things
- [00:03:01.830]like laser tag, bowling, escape rooms, things like that.
- [00:03:05.520]And then our more academic
- [00:03:06.630]or pre professional things oftentimes allow us
- [00:03:09.690]to get off campus and learn about something new
- [00:03:11.580]in their field or area of study.
- [00:03:13.650]And so some of the fun ones we've done
- [00:03:15.210]in the past are our sports media
- [00:03:19.110]and broadcasting learning community press box
- [00:03:21.270]has gone to Kansas City the last few years
- [00:03:23.129]to learn about different opportunities
- [00:03:25.650]and professional sports there.
- [00:03:27.300]And so we've gone and gotten a tour of the Royal Stadium
- [00:03:31.170]in Kansas City as well as the Sporting KC facilities
- [00:03:34.020]which is their professional soccer team,
- [00:03:35.910]and to go learn
- [00:03:36.810]about their immediate broadcasting opportunities
- [00:03:39.030]and then stay and watch a a professional soccer game.
- [00:03:41.280]So a really cool opportunity there.
- [00:03:43.648]Our pre-vet group has gone to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo
- [00:03:47.430]and seen their veterinary facilities there,
- [00:03:49.500]so that's a really fun opportunity.
- [00:03:51.780]Other ones,
- [00:03:52.613]we've gotten tours of local companies, labs,
- [00:03:55.680]those kinds of things.
- [00:03:56.730]And so just a really awesome way for students to learn more
- [00:04:00.990]about different career paths they could take as well
- [00:04:04.080]as internship and job opportunity even
- [00:04:05.970]while they're in college.
- [00:04:07.217]And then the faculty or staff sponsors will also
- [00:04:10.350]plan their own events,
- [00:04:11.220]so there's just lots of ways
- [00:04:12.360]for our students to get involved
- [00:04:13.650]and kind of see different opportunities that there might be.
- [00:04:18.660]So the first event we will be having that is required
- [00:04:21.930]for all of our community students
- [00:04:22.980]will be our LC Welcome Event on Friday, August 18th.
- [00:04:25.825]And so this is just an opportunity
- [00:04:27.900]for our students to start to build that community,
- [00:04:30.540]get to know everyone right before classes even start
- [00:04:33.123]get to know their peer mentor and all those good things.
- [00:04:35.370]So we'll have activities
- [00:04:36.435]and it will just be a really great time.
- [00:04:38.490]So definitely make sure to put that in your calendar.
- [00:04:40.768]You can make sure you can be there on that morning.
- [00:04:43.380]Again, it's Friday, August 18th,
- [00:04:44.726]so that'll be that Friday after everyone moves in.
- [00:04:47.833]And then the best part about that event
- [00:04:49.890]is everyone gets a T-shirt.
- [00:04:51.240]So we're gonna ask that you go ahead and scan this QR code
- [00:04:54.480]and fill out the form so that way we can make sure
- [00:04:56.010]that we have enough of every size for all of our students.
- [00:05:00.090]So again,
- [00:05:00.923]just scan that QR code
- [00:05:01.756]with your phone and get that filled out for us.
- [00:05:03.210]We would really appreciate it.
- [00:05:05.790]And that is everything we have for you all today.
- [00:05:08.070]Thank you so much for listening.
- [00:05:10.140]We are so excited to have you joining us in the fall.
- [00:05:12.480]If you have any questions,
- [00:05:13.710]my information is on the screen
- [00:05:16.290]for our general learning communities email and phone number.
- [00:05:19.459]But again,
- [00:05:20.340]we're so excited to have you join us
- [00:05:21.720]and we hope you enjoy the rest of your LC experience.
- [00:05:25.050]Have a great rest of your day.
