- [00:00:01.950]Hi, everyone.
- [00:00:02.783]Thank you so much for joining me
- [00:00:03.750]to learn more about life as a commuter student at UNL.
- [00:00:07.050]My name is Emily Klesner
- [00:00:08.250]and I am the Orientation Coordinator
- [00:00:09.870]in New Student Enrollment.
- [00:00:12.150]In today's session, we're gonna be talking about
- [00:00:13.830]preparing for your first day of classes,
- [00:00:16.230]different transportation options to get onto campus,
- [00:00:19.140]and then how you can make connections once you do get here.
- [00:00:23.040]A few things we suggest before your first day on campus.
- [00:00:26.310]The first one here is to map out your class routes,
- [00:00:29.310]and what this looks like is coming onto campus,
- [00:00:31.890]finding the buildings
- [00:00:32.760]where all your classes are going to be,
- [00:00:34.470]finding the classrooms,
- [00:00:36.180]and then looking at how long it takes you
- [00:00:37.740]to get maybe from your parking lot
- [00:00:39.360]or your bus stop to your first class
- [00:00:42.030]and also between your buildings,
- [00:00:43.470]between your various classes.
- [00:00:45.150]This can really help you feel a lot more confident
- [00:00:47.100]when you first get to classes on that first day
- [00:00:49.890]and just make sure you know exactly where you're going
- [00:00:51.900]so you don't get lost and you may get to class on time.
- [00:00:54.780]We also encourage you to plan out your transportation
- [00:00:57.030]and parking and what that's gonna look like for you.
- [00:00:58.890]We're gonna talk a lot about your options
- [00:01:00.570]throughout this presentation,
- [00:01:02.250]but knowing what's best for you
- [00:01:03.540]and where your parking space will be
- [00:01:05.490]or where your bus route will be
- [00:01:07.290]will be really helpful when you're getting to campus.
- [00:01:10.680]We also encourage you lastly, to make a plan for your day.
- [00:01:13.200]Each day is probably gonna look a little bit different
- [00:01:15.060]with different classes
- [00:01:16.080]and different activities that you're doing,
- [00:01:17.910]so making sure that you know what meals you'll need to eat,
- [00:01:20.520]what supplies you'll need for each day,
- [00:01:22.530]and what storage options you might need to be using.
- [00:01:24.810]That way, you're prepared when you leave home
- [00:01:26.490]and come to campus.
- [00:01:29.010]A really big thing that can help a lot of commuter students
- [00:01:31.830]is our UNL maps.
- [00:01:33.150]This is just maps.unl.edu online.
- [00:01:37.140]As you can see,
- [00:01:37.973]there's a lot of information that you can gain,
- [00:01:40.170]just by looking at these maps.
- [00:01:41.550]In that top corner, you'll see a search bar.
- [00:01:43.920]When you're enrolled for classes
- [00:01:45.450]and you see on your schedule
- [00:01:46.830]that all your buildings will probably be abbreviated
- [00:01:49.140]so you might not know what building it is or where it's at,
- [00:01:51.660]you can use this search bar to type in that abbreviation
- [00:01:54.210]and it'll show you exactly where that building is on campus
- [00:01:57.450]and you'll be able to know the full name of it.
- [00:02:00.000]Additionally, on this map, as you can see,
- [00:02:01.770]we have bus stops and bike racks all throughout campus.
- [00:02:05.370]As you'll notice at the top and the bottom of the screen,
- [00:02:07.650]there is a purple arrow with a number in it.
- [00:02:10.170]What that is, is that's live tracking of the city buses
- [00:02:13.740]that come onto campus.
- [00:02:15.037]You will be able to see exactly where a bus is
- [00:02:17.070]and how close it is to your stop
- [00:02:19.093]so you'll know exactly when you need to be outside
- [00:02:20.760]and ready to hop on that bus.
- [00:02:23.760]When it comes to parking,
- [00:02:24.720]you have a lot of different options.
- [00:02:26.760]As you'll notice, we have two options
- [00:02:28.380]for how long your passes last.
- [00:02:30.300]The first one is an annual pass
- [00:02:32.010]and that's August to August.
- [00:02:33.600]The second one is a nine month pass
- [00:02:35.220]and that's August to May.
- [00:02:36.720]The biggest consideration most of our students make
- [00:02:38.910]in choosing between these two
- [00:02:40.350]is are you gonna be taking summer classes?
- [00:02:42.660]If you do think you'll be here over the summer,
- [00:02:44.910]we do encourage you to get that annual.
- [00:02:46.350]That way, you'll have parking access that whole time.
- [00:02:48.390]But if you don't think you will be,
- [00:02:49.740]if you'll be doing other activities
- [00:02:51.330]or other jobs during the summer,
- [00:02:53.340]then you may only need that nine month.
- [00:02:55.320]If you do choose the nine month and realize
- [00:02:57.090]that you need to switch to the annual,
- [00:02:58.590]that's really easy to do
- [00:02:59.670]and parking can help you make that switch.
- [00:03:02.550]All of our permits do work on all three of our campuses
- [00:03:05.370]so that's City, East, and Innovation Campuses.
- [00:03:07.860]It's just a matter of what lots you're allowed to park in
- [00:03:11.220]depending on which permit you have on each campus.
- [00:03:14.490]So our options here, as you can see,
- [00:03:15.930]we have our non-reserved commuter permits,
- [00:03:18.030]these are just kind of our general open air lots,
- [00:03:20.850]our reserve permits, parking garages,
- [00:03:23.700]you'll only pick one parking garage that you would park in,
- [00:03:26.130]we do have five options, but you'll just pick one,
- [00:03:28.890]or our perimeter lots.
- [00:03:31.770]So as you can see, we have a lot of parking options
- [00:03:34.590]all throughout campus,
- [00:03:35.490]and we'll talk about each of your different options here.
- [00:03:38.520]So this is City and Innovation Campus.
- [00:03:41.820]That first one we talked about are non-reserved lots.
- [00:03:44.820]These are our green C lots.
- [00:03:46.500]These are our most popular with our commuter students.
- [00:03:49.050]These are just open air lots
- [00:03:50.460]that you can come and park in any open spot
- [00:03:52.590]on any of these lots with your parking pass.
- [00:03:55.350]Many of our students use these
- [00:03:56.490]'cause they are all across campus and really easy to access.
- [00:04:01.350]Our next option here is our reserved lots.
- [00:04:03.900]These are those gold lots.
- [00:04:05.430]As you can see, there are only two of these
- [00:04:07.350]and they're a lot smaller.
- [00:04:08.970]These are less popular for our commuter students
- [00:04:10.950]just because they do fill up fast
- [00:04:12.660]and they are a little more expensive,
- [00:04:14.430]but they still are an option for you.
- [00:04:17.190]Like I said,
- [00:04:18.023]we have five parking garage options around campus.
- [00:04:20.400]If you do choose to get a permit for a parking garage,
- [00:04:23.100]you're only able to park in one single garage
- [00:04:25.950]so you're gonna choose which one you'd like to park in
- [00:04:28.350]and pick that permit.
- [00:04:30.660]We do encourage you to really make sure
- [00:04:32.190]you know what your class schedule's gonna look like.
- [00:04:34.170]That way, you don't pick a garage
- [00:04:35.730]that's on the opposite side of campus
- [00:04:37.110]from most of your buildings.
- [00:04:39.180]And then our last option here is our perimeter lots.
- [00:04:42.240]These lots are just off of the edge of campus
- [00:04:44.700]so it's a little more of a walk, but still really manageable
- [00:04:47.850]and it does cut your price about in half.
- [00:04:50.460]I do wanna point out that this intersection right here,
- [00:04:52.620]that's Antelope Valley Parkway,
- [00:04:54.330]there is a full walking area underneath that intersection
- [00:04:57.750]so you don't have to cross any large traffic areas
- [00:05:01.350]during any time when you're coming onto campus.
- [00:05:03.270]You can just go right underneath in the walking area tunnels
- [00:05:06.510]and safely get across the campus without any hassle.
- [00:05:10.650]When it comes to parking on East Campus,
- [00:05:12.990]like I said, all of our permits do work on East Campus
- [00:05:15.420]and City Campus, so you won't have any troubles there.
- [00:05:18.420]It's just a matter of where you're able to park at.
- [00:05:21.000]So if you have a green C lot pass,
- [00:05:24.060]a gold reserve lot pass or a parking garage pass,
- [00:05:27.660]those all turn into C lots over on East Campus
- [00:05:31.350]so all of them would be able to park
- [00:05:32.670]in these green lots here.
- [00:05:34.620]There's a lot of them over on East Campus and a lot of space
- [00:05:37.260]so it's really easy to find a spot over there.
- [00:05:39.690]So any of those three parking permits
- [00:05:41.280]will automatically park in a green lot
- [00:05:43.170]when you go over to East Campus.
- [00:05:44.550]The only exception are the perimeter lots.
- [00:05:46.980]If you park in a perimeter lot on City Campus,
- [00:05:49.500]you'll also park in that same kind of perimeter lot
- [00:05:51.660]over on East Campus.
- [00:05:54.330]A few other notes to think about for parking.
- [00:05:56.730]All of our parking permits are digital,
- [00:05:59.430]with the exception of a garage,
- [00:06:00.750]you won't have any sticker or anything to put in your car.
- [00:06:03.990]You can put up to five cars on one permit,
- [00:06:07.320]but only one car can be on campus at a time.
- [00:06:10.110]So if you do need to ever switch cars,
- [00:06:12.150]bring one of your family members' cars or you get a new car,
- [00:06:15.120]all you have to do is go back
- [00:06:16.080]into your parking permit portal
- [00:06:17.730]and you can add those and trade those out.
- [00:06:19.920]That way, you can switch cars out
- [00:06:21.840]and come and park on campus easily.
- [00:06:24.270]If you do need an accessible parking permit,
- [00:06:26.340]you just need to show proof of that
- [00:06:27.720]to our Parking and Transit office
- [00:06:29.640]and they'll help you get the spot
- [00:06:30.900]that best meets your needs.
- [00:06:32.880]Our motorcycle parking,
- [00:06:34.140]we do not require a permit for motorcycles,
- [00:06:36.720]but you do have to register them online
- [00:06:39.000]with Parking and Transit.
- [00:06:40.050]That way, they know the motorcycle does belong to a student.
- [00:06:43.080]And then lastly,
- [00:06:43.913]we do have a program called Husker Safe Walk.
- [00:06:46.320]This is a free service to all students
- [00:06:48.270]and what it is is students can call the number
- [00:06:50.940]anytime of day, 24/7
- [00:06:52.590]and they will send over a security officer
- [00:06:55.710]to your student's location
- [00:06:57.600]and they will walk with the student
- [00:06:59.550]to wherever they need to go,
- [00:07:00.930]so that maybe between campus buildings,
- [00:07:03.120]maybe if you parked in that very north perimeter lot
- [00:07:06.210]and you're all the way down at the library
- [00:07:08.460]and you don't wanna walk that whole distance by yourself,
- [00:07:11.280]they'll send somebody over to just walk with you
- [00:07:13.350]to your car and make sure you get there safely.
- [00:07:16.020]Most of our students don't feel the need to access this.
- [00:07:18.600]They do feel like we have a very safe campus
- [00:07:20.340]and don't usually worry about it,
- [00:07:22.410]but if your student ever would like to access this
- [00:07:24.390]or ever doesn't feel safe being alone,
- [00:07:26.790]this is a free service that, like I said,
- [00:07:28.800]available 24/7 that they can utilize.
- [00:07:32.430]So some additional transportation options.
- [00:07:35.130]We are a very bike-friendly campus, bike-friendly city,
- [00:07:38.790]so we do encourage students to take advantage of that.
- [00:07:41.280]You do need to register your bike with UNLPD.
- [00:07:44.580]This just ensures that they know
- [00:07:46.230]the bike belongs to a student and at the end of the semester
- [00:07:49.410]if you accidentally leave it somewhere,
- [00:07:51.150]it doesn't get donated.
- [00:07:52.260]They do wanna make sure that they know whose it is
- [00:07:54.508]and that if it gets stolen as well,
- [00:07:55.680]they can help you track it easier.
- [00:07:57.780]We have lots of bike racks throughout campus
- [00:07:59.790]as you saw on the maps and earlier in this presentation.
- [00:08:02.970]So there is outside almost every building
- [00:08:04.860]is a place where you can lock your bike up.
- [00:08:06.930]Our outdoor adventure shop,
- [00:08:08.160]which is in the middle of campus, they do have a bike shop
- [00:08:10.560]that does safety checks and repairs and rentals for you.
- [00:08:13.950]And then lastly, we also have bike rentals available
- [00:08:17.730]through BikeLNK.
- [00:08:19.200]You may have seen their kiosks around the city
- [00:08:21.420]or in front of the Union and they are just hourly rentals
- [00:08:26.580]that you can do with the bikes.
- [00:08:28.140]Students like to take them into downtown
- [00:08:30.300]or on some of the trails or across campus
- [00:08:32.430]and they do have a special code there
- [00:08:34.080]where if you type in that code
- [00:08:35.250]when you're purchasing a membership,
- [00:08:37.230]you can get unlimited one hour rides for only $25 a year,
- [00:08:40.860]which is a really great thing to take advantage of
- [00:08:42.157]and a lot of our students do choose to do that.
- [00:08:45.000]They have regular manual bikes,
- [00:08:46.590]but they've also started adding some electric bikes
- [00:08:49.050]into a lot of their kiosks so that is a great option too.
- [00:08:53.323]For the city bus, students do get a free bus pass
- [00:08:57.090]because they're a student.
- [00:08:58.320]You do have to download that through our Token Transit app,
- [00:09:01.890]but it is free and easy to access for students.
- [00:09:05.160]So you can use that bus pass to take the city buses,
- [00:09:08.580]not only between campuses, but anywhere throughout the city
- [00:09:11.280]so you can use that pass to get from a bus stop
- [00:09:13.860]near your home all the way up onto campus if you'd like to.
- [00:09:16.860]And there are special dedicated routes
- [00:09:18.540]that go between City Campus,
- [00:09:20.280]Innovation Campus, and East Campus
- [00:09:22.080]so that way, you could easily get to your classes
- [00:09:24.020]or other campuses if you need to.
- [00:09:27.660]When it comes to making connections on campus,
- [00:09:30.540]there's a handful of different things that you can do.
- [00:09:33.150]One of the biggest things
- [00:09:34.140]is participating in student organizations.
- [00:09:36.990]It's really easy to find a student organization
- [00:09:39.270]that fits your interest.
- [00:09:40.260]We have over 500 different student organizations on campus
- [00:09:43.590]so it can be really easy to find one
- [00:09:45.900]that has people that have similar interests to you
- [00:09:47.958]or something that you would enjoy.
- [00:09:49.080]This is the easiest way to make those connections
- [00:09:51.330]and really get integrated with people on campus.
- [00:09:54.360]We also encourage you to join study groups.
- [00:09:56.160]One of the easiest ways to do that
- [00:09:57.600]is to just find people who were in classes with you
- [00:10:00.510]and go around and ask them and say,
- [00:10:02.647]"Hey, you know, we're about to have a test coming up.
- [00:10:04.860]Would you like to get together and study after class is over
- [00:10:08.610]and get to know each other more?"
- [00:10:10.110]And it can be a really easy way to make more friends
- [00:10:12.330]while also growing academically.
- [00:10:15.840]We encourage you to use our campus facilities
- [00:10:18.150]and really try to find the spaces that you love
- [00:10:21.180]and you enjoy being around campus
- [00:10:23.040]so that maybe your favorite place is to study,
- [00:10:25.170]going to one of our two recreational facilities to work out,
- [00:10:30.000]and then also just places where you can go
- [00:10:31.650]and meet friends and start to join in
- [00:10:33.990]on different activities and organizations.
- [00:10:36.930]And then lastly, we really encourage all of our students
- [00:10:39.030]to find an on-campus job if they are wanting to work
- [00:10:42.420]while they're in college.
- [00:10:44.010]We have great supervisors who really understand
- [00:10:46.920]what it's like to be a student.
- [00:10:48.360]They understand that you have weird schedules
- [00:10:50.430]and that classes can be at different times of day
- [00:10:52.380]and maybe you have small gaps between them
- [00:10:54.780]where you could pop into the office.
- [00:10:56.670]There's a large variation of different kinds of jobs
- [00:10:59.790]on campus so we always really encourage students
- [00:11:01.710]to get that on-campus job
- [00:11:03.120]so that way, not only are you saving transportation,
- [00:11:05.790]you can just come to one place
- [00:11:06.807]for all your classes and work,
- [00:11:08.850]but it can be a lot more flexible
- [00:11:10.320]than maybe some off-campus jobs could be.
- [00:11:14.100]When it comes to eating on campus,
- [00:11:16.410]commuter students actually have a lot of great options.
- [00:11:19.560]One of our newest options is our Selleck Dining Center
- [00:11:22.470]and this is a mobile order-to-go option
- [00:11:27.030]for our students that we've just been able to implement
- [00:11:29.160]within the last year or two.
- [00:11:31.020]And so all students have to do is download
- [00:11:32.970]our Transact Mobile Ordering app and they can order
- [00:11:35.820]from five different restaurants that are inside of there
- [00:11:38.670]with a great variety of different food options
- [00:11:41.520]and they can either take it with them
- [00:11:43.260]and go across campus and eat wherever they need to
- [00:11:45.330]or there is a lot of awesome seating
- [00:11:47.760]that's just recently been renovated in there as well.
- [00:11:51.210]Students are also able to have traditional meal plans
- [00:11:53.580]as a commuter student.
- [00:11:54.750]They have a lot of different options that vary
- [00:11:57.630]to help commuter students
- [00:11:59.670]with their different flexibility and needs.
- [00:12:02.190]We also have convenience stores all across campus
- [00:12:04.500]that have smaller grab-and-go options.
- [00:12:07.320]They're very similar to like the inside of a gas station
- [00:12:09.870]where they have different drinks and snacks
- [00:12:11.430]and some foods.
- [00:12:13.320]That can be a good option.
- [00:12:15.390]The Union and downtown
- [00:12:16.710]has a lot of different options as well.
- [00:12:19.350]The Union has quite a few different restaurants in it,
- [00:12:22.140]and then downtown
- [00:12:23.010]within just a two or three minute walking distance,
- [00:12:25.350]you can run into 10 to 15 different options for restaurants.
- [00:12:28.950]And we also encourage students
- [00:12:30.060]if they would like to bring their own meals, that they can.
- [00:12:33.030]We do have two microwaves available throughout campus
- [00:12:35.520]so there's one in the Union near the Subway
- [00:12:38.340]in the food court area
- [00:12:39.690]and then there's one in the Adele Learning Commons
- [00:12:41.910]in the north part of the library.
- [00:12:44.850]When it comes to storage on campus,
- [00:12:46.290]we have two different options for locker rentals.
- [00:12:49.380]So we have regular lockers that are at the library
- [00:12:52.200]or at campus rec that you can rent semesterly
- [00:12:54.900]if you do need some storage,
- [00:12:56.070]especially if you're maybe you're biking
- [00:12:57.270]or busing onto campus.
- [00:12:59.280]But then we also have bike locker rentals
- [00:13:01.260]if you're looking to keep your bike on campus
- [00:13:03.660]or lock it up a little more safely,
- [00:13:05.580]you could rent those by month or by year.
- [00:13:09.930]Some great options that we have for commuter students
- [00:13:12.270]to come and meet other commuter students
- [00:13:14.340]throughout Big Red Welcome.
- [00:13:15.630]Like I said earlier, Big Red Welcome
- [00:13:17.130]is our welcome week activities that happen
- [00:13:19.080]the week before classes start.
- [00:13:21.330]Students are able
- [00:13:22.163]to come to our many Commuter Student Connects.
- [00:13:26.010]What these are is it really just gives students
- [00:13:28.260]a place to come and gather with other students
- [00:13:30.570]to have people to go and attend
- [00:13:32.190]our various large events with.
- [00:13:34.410]So at these different events,
- [00:13:35.670]there'll be an orientational leader who'll have a sign
- [00:13:37.710]that says Commuter Student Connects,
- [00:13:39.210]you can go and find them
- [00:13:40.830]and meet up with all the other commuter students
- [00:13:42.900]and have some new friends and people
- [00:13:44.850]who are similar to you to go and enjoy these events with,
- [00:13:48.087]and all of those details can be found
- [00:13:50.220]in the Nebraska App for Big Red Welcome.
- [00:13:53.010]Our second event that we have for commuter students
- [00:13:56.010]during Big Red Welcome is our Commuter Student Welcome.
- [00:13:59.190]And this will happen in the Adele Learning Commons,
- [00:14:01.440]which is in the north part of Love Library.
- [00:14:03.720]We'll have free Dunkin' Donuts coffee,
- [00:14:05.520]it'll be a fun come-and-go event.
- [00:14:07.830]We can meet other students.
- [00:14:09.240]And then after that's finished,
- [00:14:10.620]we'll go over to the tunnel walk at Memorial Stadium,
- [00:14:14.040]which is where we make the big N
- [00:14:15.540]on the field that you've probably seen pictures of
- [00:14:17.610]and we'll go and enjoy that event as a group.
- [00:14:21.750]If you do have any questions
- [00:14:22.920]about anything in this presentation or anything more
- [00:14:25.260]that you might think would be helpful as a commuter student,
- [00:14:28.200]please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
- [00:14:30.480]My email and phone number are both on the screen here
- [00:14:32.820]so you can come and ask any questions that might be helpful
- [00:14:36.780]and we can help make sure that you are situated
- [00:14:39.330]once you get here on campus.
- [00:14:41.970]Hope you have a really great rest of your day
- [00:14:43.200]and thanks for joining.
