Description
College of Architecture collaborate studios worked with local ag industry and stakeholders to explore designs for an “udderly” unique dairy center that will show the public where and how food is made.
Students explored several sites with the aim of helping create ideas and momentum towards the construction of a future facility.

- [00:00:04.380]This year one of our collaborate studios worked
- [00:00:07.080]with local AG and industry stakeholders to design an utterly
- [00:00:11.280]unique dairy center that will show the public
- [00:00:14.190]where and how food is made.
- [00:00:17.040]As part of an ongoing studio collaboration
- [00:00:19.620]Nate Bicak interior design students
- [00:00:22.380]and Steven Hardy's architecture students visited
- [00:00:25.410]an automated dairy operation to learn how cows, robots
- [00:00:29.730]and people interact in sometimes surprising ways.
- [00:00:33.930]When robots are used in the caretaking of cows,
- [00:00:36.330]cows become really content and relaxed.
- [00:00:39.330]'Cause they get to choose when they're milked.
- [00:00:42.240]They don't have to sort of deal with the humans.
- [00:00:44.550]And that gives a great environment
- [00:00:46.260]for the public to sort of interact
- [00:00:47.790]with and start to learn about animal agriculture.
- [00:00:50.670]It's all self-automated.
- [00:00:52.470]The cows would walk
- [00:00:53.303]into this milking robot that would scan words others are
- [00:00:56.100]and then extract milk from there.
- [00:00:58.260]And the cows like it so much they actually like stand
- [00:01:01.106]in line and wait for their turn.
- [00:01:02.430]With input from industry and academic experts,
- [00:01:06.270]students collaborated on plans
- [00:01:08.250]for a 30,000 square foot next-gen demonstration dairy.
- [00:01:13.680]The facility will include a robotic dairy, barn,
- [00:01:17.340]a cafe, exhibition, and learning centers
- [00:01:20.413]and food processing facilities
- [00:01:23.070]along with an automated greenhouse.
- [00:01:25.230]People can come in and learn
- [00:01:26.640]about how dairy is produced being one
- [00:01:28.470]of the primary objectives of the project,
- [00:01:30.180]reconnect people with where food comes from
- [00:01:33.240]and how through a series
- [00:01:35.070]of live hands on animal interactions
- [00:01:37.494]or interactive galleries and displays, a cafe,
- [00:01:41.610]the ability to actually see how milk,
- [00:01:43.798]yogurt and cheese are being processed
- [00:01:46.770]and produced in a facility like this.
- [00:01:49.560]I thought architecture mostly dealt with people,
- [00:01:51.900]but I was pretty surprised to incorporate animals as well.
- [00:01:56.610]And it was really challenging to think
- [00:01:59.130]about how the cows need to live
- [00:02:00.570]and how the whole milking robot works.
- [00:02:04.380]And people didn't believe me
- [00:02:05.790]that it was a real project when I told them about it.
- [00:02:07.920]So, it's just really fascinating and interesting.
- [00:02:10.890]Students explored several sites
- [00:02:12.930]for the robotic dairy
- [00:02:13.860]on East Campus and Nebraska Innovation Campus
- [00:02:17.280]with the intention of breaking ground in 2024.
