- [00:00:04.320]Salvador Linquist,
- [00:00:05.970]third year landscape architecture students had it made
- [00:00:09.000]in the shade this semester.
- [00:00:11.010]Linquist Studio collaborated
- [00:00:12.930]with the city of Omaha and the University
- [00:00:15.030]of Nebraska Medical Center to create a heat action plan.
- [00:00:18.897]So, the problem we're trying to address is
- [00:00:20.610]that extreme heat is the leading cause
- [00:00:23.010]of disaster related deaths in the United States.
- [00:00:25.560]The challenge is that the problem is going to continue
- [00:00:28.770]to get worse over time with climate change.
- [00:00:30.570]And so, as cities continue to heat up,
- [00:00:33.240]there needs to be some sort
- [00:00:34.440]of response to mitigating that heat in some way.
- [00:00:37.193]Some of the big things that make a city hot is the amount
- [00:00:40.140]of like hard surfaces that you have.
- [00:00:42.180]So, where there's a lot of asphalt in concrete
- [00:00:44.820]that stuff kind of absorbs the heat
- [00:00:47.190]and retains it in the area a lot more.
- [00:00:49.290]But then some things that can help to cool it down
- [00:00:51.600]are things like green space
- [00:00:53.520]or trees that provide a lot of shade.
- [00:00:56.010]Students examined literal hotspots in Omaha.
- [00:00:59.340]They collaborated with city planners, policy makers
- [00:01:02.280]and community members to start thinking
- [00:01:04.770]about access to shade, urban vegetation and cool spaces
- [00:01:10.410]and to update municipal codes
- [00:01:12.690]and influence the design of future buildings and landscapes.
- [00:01:17.040]So, the long-term goals for this project
- [00:01:19.800]and for the Omaha community really has to do with thinking
- [00:01:22.950]about shade and access to shade and cooler environments
- [00:01:26.370]as a civic resource that belongs to everybody.
- [00:01:29.070]It's a health concern.
- [00:01:30.120]And so, by codifying some
- [00:01:32.180]of the things that come out of our speculative projects,
- [00:01:35.280]we can start to have a conversation
- [00:01:36.630]about what it means to have access to this crucial resource.
