- [00:00:00.125](bright uplifting music)
- [00:00:04.350]One of Lincoln's oldest church structures
- [00:00:07.260]gets some uplifting updates and a transformed purpose.
- [00:00:11.820]Jason Griffiths and Jeff Days' architecture students,
- [00:00:15.210]teamed up with the F Street Church
- [00:00:17.370]in Lincoln's south downtown neighborhood
- [00:00:20.160]to transform a neglected 19th century church
- [00:00:23.700]into a community art hub.
- [00:00:26.310]When the renovation is completed,
- [00:00:28.050]the Art Chapel will be a safe and inspiring studio space
- [00:00:32.190]for adults to take art classes at a low cost
- [00:00:35.880]and share their displays with the community.
- [00:00:38.610]This project addresses a very real problem,
- [00:00:40.830]which is the cases of homelessness,
- [00:00:44.910]substance abuse disorder, and poverty
- [00:00:47.520]within the south of downtown region.
- [00:00:49.560]These are very real social problems,
- [00:00:51.660]and we as designers, as educators, and with students
- [00:00:55.680]work to find ways in which architecture
- [00:00:57.900]can improve on these conditions,
- [00:01:00.600]find ways in which it can help.
- [00:01:02.490]The Art Chapel is a design/build project
- [00:01:05.070]where students work with real clients on a real project.
- [00:01:08.670]They created the very first sketches
- [00:01:10.890]and will go all the way through to the final construction.
- [00:01:14.340]Well, we're doing a lot of significant things
- [00:01:15.990]to make it functional for the art programming
- [00:01:18.660]that's going to occur here.
- [00:01:20.250]One of the most impressive features
- [00:01:21.810]is gonna be that half of the front wall of the building
- [00:01:24.900]is gonna roll away as a big barn door.
- [00:01:27.240]It'll appear as if it's the original wall
- [00:01:29.160]and then it'll move away
- [00:01:30.300]opening this space to the community,
- [00:01:31.830]which is really about communicating
- [00:01:34.110]the openness of the facility to the neighborhood
- [00:01:36.570]and allowing anybody to come in
- [00:01:38.130]and engage with the art programming or show their own work.
- [00:01:41.711](machine buzzing)
- [00:01:44.220]Students built all the furniture,
- [00:01:46.050]fixtures, and components for the project
- [00:01:48.420]at Nebraska Innovation Studio.
- [00:01:50.790]Working with my classmates
- [00:01:51.960]and getting to actually design parts
- [00:01:54.000]that will go into an existing building is so cool.
- [00:01:56.850]Seeing where it was to where it will be
- [00:01:59.820]once we finish this project is awesome.
- [00:02:01.920]Seeing our work physically be built
- [00:02:03.900]is something that we haven't done before,
- [00:02:06.060]so that's why I love this designs/build studio
- [00:02:08.850]and it's just been so great to be a part of.
- [00:02:11.340]The Art Chapel project
- [00:02:12.600]was prolonged by the pandemic, but it is back on track
- [00:02:16.110]and set to open for creativity and community building
- [00:02:19.320]later this year.
