- [00:00:00.240]Welcome back.
- [00:00:01.073]It's our pre-game coverage
- [00:00:02.010]for the Huskers Red-White spring scrimmage here
- [00:00:03.990]this afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:05.520]And every Saturday during the fall
- [00:00:07.470]we get a chance to sit down with the chancellor
- [00:00:09.030]from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:10.470]And so, here again, the spring game,
- [00:00:11.820]we're doing that as well.
- [00:00:12.653]Ronnie Green joining us here.
- [00:00:14.580]Everybody's pretty excited and rightfully.
- [00:00:16.290]So, Matt Rhule has done such a fabulous job
- [00:00:18.600]of integrating himself into Nebraska culture,
- [00:00:21.870]bringing some energy and excitement to the team
- [00:00:23.880]and a lot of people are certainly excited to watch
- [00:00:25.650]this scrimmage here today.
- [00:00:26.910]Oh, absolutely.
- [00:00:28.200]There's no spring game like ours anywhere in the country.
- [00:00:31.650]The Red-White game is such a tradition here.
- [00:00:34.860]And of course, we always have one of the biggest crowds
- [00:00:36.960]in college football and for our spring game
- [00:00:39.660]and that's gonna be the case again today.
- [00:00:42.120]Every chance our fans get to watch our players
- [00:00:45.810]in Memorial Stadium is special
- [00:00:47.536]and it's yet still kind of a long wait
- [00:00:50.910]until you think about the end of August.
- [00:00:53.940]And September coming with the season ahead.
- [00:00:56.910]Season will start at Minnesota and then at Colorado,
- [00:01:00.480]but today, especially where everybody's focused on,
- [00:01:03.690]the new coaching leadership and the welcome to head coach,
- [00:01:08.580]Matt Rule and his team.
- [00:01:10.560]he's already proven to be a great ambassador
- [00:01:12.687]for our football program,
- [00:01:13.890]was just on a program with him earlier this week.
- [00:01:16.620]And he's awesome, and we're just excited to see
- [00:01:19.470]how the team looks today.
- [00:01:20.490]And I hear they're actually gonna, you know,
- [00:01:21.930]play some football, you know?
- [00:01:23.130]So, it's good to have that opportunity.
- [00:01:25.920]And then of course, it's also a great day
- [00:01:28.890]to be able to welcome Frank Solich back to Lincoln,
- [00:01:32.520]special opportunity to honor both a former
- [00:01:35.700]Husker head coach for six years
- [00:01:38.790]and that time he head here of leadership assistant coach
- [00:01:42.330]over a long period of time for the Huskers,
- [00:01:45.150]and of course, as a player himself.
- [00:01:46.680]So, great to have Frank here.
- [00:01:48.780]I know that means a lot to him, it means a lot to our fans
- [00:01:53.040]to welcome back him and honor him
- [00:01:56.370]at the university as we should be doing.
- [00:01:58.470]It sure does.
- [00:01:59.730]Also, a chance to welcome a new updated, Herbie Husker
- [00:02:03.870]is gonna be introduced to the fans today.
- [00:02:05.520]This is gonna be really fun.
- [00:02:06.570]They put out the logos earlier in the week,
- [00:02:09.000]the graphic version of that
- [00:02:10.290]and it features an ear of corn in his overalls pocket.
- [00:02:13.410]And I know that's near and dear to your heart
- [00:02:15.270]and we do so much corn related research here
- [00:02:17.790]at the university as well.
- [00:02:19.050]What can you tell us about what Husker researchers
- [00:02:21.210]are discovering about corn?
- [00:02:22.650]Well, you know, Herbie has evolved over the years, right?
- [00:02:25.050]We've seen the various versions of Herbie Husker
- [00:02:27.570]and it's great to see the new Herbie
- [00:02:30.150]or the new kind of returned Herbie in a way.
- [00:02:34.012]And it is great, as an old...
- [00:02:37.170]As an Aggie sitting here saying this
- [00:02:39.390]to have that ear of corn and back in Herbie, you know,
- [00:02:44.220]and we have some kind of big research that has just happened
- [00:02:49.050]here in our center for plant science innovation
- [00:02:52.080]that's corn research.
- [00:02:53.280]You know, we're one of the leading places in the world
- [00:02:56.400]for everything to do with research around corn.
- [00:03:00.450]And this particular research is kind of breakthrough
- [00:03:04.170]research that's helped us now to understand
- [00:03:08.040]how changes have allowed corn to adapt
- [00:03:10.770]to different environments.
- [00:03:12.120]This is gene expression work at the very genetic level.
- [00:03:16.710]And our research teams have identified the genes
- [00:03:20.790]that help corn to adapt to new environments in the past.
- [00:03:24.300]And it's gonna allow us to speed up the development
- [00:03:27.570]for new corn varieties in the future that can tolerate
- [00:03:30.990]extreme weather conditions
- [00:03:32.550]and changes in management practices.
- [00:03:35.190]And obviously, that's a big importance to Nebraska farmers,
- [00:03:38.400]to Nebraska agriculture in what we see out looking ahead.
- [00:03:45.270]You know, I don't get a lot of opportunities to say this
- [00:03:49.290]in the future but I'm gonna just reinforce it today.
- [00:03:53.610]Nebraska is known around the world for being leading
- [00:03:58.920]and research in this arena.
- [00:04:02.220]And it's a point of pride really for our university.
- [00:04:05.310]And just another big breakthrough set of research here
- [00:04:07.890]from our center for plant science innovation.
- [00:04:09.840]Oh, that's fantastic.
- [00:04:10.800]Well, we're here on April 22nd spring football game.
- [00:04:14.010]There's still another big event to go inside the stadium
- [00:04:16.980]before we wrap up the school year
- [00:04:18.270]and that is the commencement ceremony.
- [00:04:20.070]And it was announced earlier this week that you
- [00:04:22.650]will be giving the commencement speech,
- [00:04:24.300]that's gonna be your last commencement
- [00:04:26.160]as chancellor at UNL.
- [00:04:27.300]This has to mean an awful lot to you.
- [00:04:29.010]It sure does.
- [00:04:29.843]You know, I'm gonna have to really think about
- [00:04:32.400]what I say, Greg.
- [00:04:33.270]You know, I want to celebrate our graduates obviously,
- [00:04:37.950]May 19th, our graduate commencement
- [00:04:40.170]for our masters in PhD students,
- [00:04:43.050]professional degree students,
- [00:04:44.910]and then Saturday and all of our undergraduates
- [00:04:48.270]at Memorial Stadium for that commencement,
- [00:04:51.330]it'll be my 21st commencement as chancellor
- [00:04:54.390]and my last commencement.
- [00:04:56.100]So, it'll be a little bittersweet in that way.
- [00:04:58.650]I've kind of been kidding a lot of people.
- [00:05:00.240]I'm kind of graduating as chancellor
- [00:05:01.830]with this graduating class, and it will be
- [00:05:05.910]very, very special to have the opportunity,
- [00:05:08.310]a big honor for me.
- [00:05:10.050]I was pretty humbled to be asked to do this
- [00:05:12.990]for both of those ceremonies
- [00:05:14.820]and to get a chance to share with them a little bit about
- [00:05:18.030]how much they have to look forward to in their life
- [00:05:21.660]and how much they have to look forward
- [00:05:23.460]to with this valuable education, world-class education
- [00:05:27.420]that they've been able to receive here
- [00:05:29.640]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:31.050]So, it'll hold a special place in my heart
- [00:05:33.540]and I'm looking forward to that commencement.
- [00:05:35.250]They tell me that we are very likely to set another record
- [00:05:39.930]for another record graduating class for the university
- [00:05:43.860]and that commencement exercise.
- [00:05:46.050]And so, it's just gonna be exciting.
- [00:05:47.880]Well, we're gonna talk to you a few more times this spring
- [00:05:49.800]with some baseball updates.
- [00:05:50.820]I'll be anxious to hear more
- [00:05:51.870]about how you put your speech together.
- [00:05:53.580]Have fun today. Enjoy this spring game today.
- [00:05:56.010]Well, as always, it's good to be back in Memorial Stadium
- [00:05:59.010]and get a look at this team and go Big Red.
- [00:06:00.930]Ronnie Green with us here on our pregame show.
- [00:06:02.820]Lots of traffic in around Memorial City
- [00:06:04.710]and let's get a check of that traffic from Trooper Dave.
