- [00:00:05.640]Hi, and welcome to the Art TEAMs podcast.
- [00:00:08.610]Today, I want to talk about two really quick iPad apps.
- [00:00:12.780]So I walk into some classrooms
- [00:00:14.400]and our teacher or regular classroom teachers,
- [00:00:17.610]they have a few iPads.
- [00:00:19.650]Some of them are not very new,
- [00:00:21.420]and often they are not used in those classrooms.
- [00:00:25.770]So the question came up to me:
- [00:00:27.780]What can we do with those kind of iPads
- [00:00:30.090]where they're not necessarily connected to the network?
- [00:00:32.730]They're not very robust.
- [00:00:33.870]They might be even old.
- [00:00:35.040]And the first thing that I tried
- [00:00:37.020]on all of these iPads is working inside the Notes app.
- [00:00:40.320]Notes comes with every device and every tablet,
- [00:00:45.120]and there are different versions.
- [00:00:46.320]I'm going to talk obviously about the iPad
- [00:00:48.420]in the Apple version,
- [00:00:49.980]but other tablets have similar features.
- [00:00:53.220]And this is a Notes app, very, very basic.
- [00:00:55.170]You don't have to pay for it.
- [00:00:56.220]You don't have to ask for any permission or anything else.
- [00:00:59.070]And nobody has to log in.
- [00:01:00.810]So that's great.
- [00:01:01.650]That's always something we think about.
- [00:01:03.660]And you can see that once you go inside the Notes,
- [00:01:06.570]and you say, I want to draw or write, not type,
- [00:01:10.350]you have a variety of tools you can use.
- [00:01:14.340]So you can use this one
- [00:01:16.860]and you can choose a color and you can start writing.
- [00:01:21.000]If I want to make it thicker, I can make it thicker.
- [00:01:25.260]And you can see that how much you push on the screen
- [00:01:29.460]can create different effects,
- [00:01:31.290]and that we're doing a one on top of the other.
- [00:01:34.140]So there's lots of really great visual effects.
- [00:01:36.660]And again, what I love about this app, the Notes app,
- [00:01:40.290]is it does not require anything.
- [00:01:42.150]You don't have to pay for anything.
- [00:01:43.590]You don't have to log in
- [00:01:45.150]and you can start creating in really interesting ways.
- [00:01:49.950]You can, of course, use the eraser
- [00:01:52.920]and then erase a little something you don't like.
- [00:01:55.740]You can use different tools and create a shape
- [00:02:01.560]or use a marker-like or highlighter-like variation.
- [00:02:09.120]And that goes on top.
- [00:02:10.770]So you can see that if you have an iPad, even an old iPad,
- [00:02:15.510]you can have kids create beautiful art,
- [00:02:18.720]save it as a picture,
- [00:02:20.370]share it with somebody else
- [00:02:21.720]if they are connected to the internet.
- [00:02:23.160]But even if they are not,
- [00:02:24.600]just having a device that is an old device,
- [00:02:27.150]an iPad 2 or 3, this will work.
- [00:02:29.880]And kids can be incredibly creative on it
- [00:02:32.790]if they choose to be.
- [00:02:34.020]Of course, we also want them to interact with physical art
- [00:02:38.490]and creating with their hands
- [00:02:40.530]and playing with the materials,
- [00:02:41.940]but this is a great option.
- [00:02:43.710]Also an option that doesn't require a mess.
- [00:02:45.960]And for some of our kids, at the right time,
- [00:02:48.360]this can be a lifesaver
- [00:02:50.670]and a way to reengage them with the art
- [00:02:53.250]when they're a little bit reluctant to do that kind of work.
- [00:02:56.730]The second app I want to talk about can also work
- [00:03:00.660]without the internet being on,
- [00:03:04.050]and this is Art Set.
- [00:03:07.080]And Art Set is a lovely app that allows you to create
- [00:03:13.110]in a way that feels very authentic to using paint,
- [00:03:16.830]for example.
- [00:03:17.940]So this is me trying to create.
- [00:03:21.210]You can see what tools are available.
- [00:03:23.220]This is, again, I'm using the free version.
- [00:03:25.170]I have not paid for it.
- [00:03:26.220]I do not have to log in.
- [00:03:27.780]You can see what you can use here.
- [00:03:30.120]And so, I am using crayon,
- [00:03:34.350]a wax crayon on a textured page.
- [00:03:39.930]So that takes time to get in.
- [00:03:43.140]And I can obviously choose different colors
- [00:03:45.480]so I'm going to change and make it silver and add it in.
- [00:03:50.340]And you can see how slowly that becomes,
- [00:03:53.610]so you can work at it.
- [00:03:56.250]And there are different palettes, so you-
- [00:03:58.140]There's a lot of choice in this app
- [00:04:02.100]when you are choosing materials.
- [00:04:04.350]Let's take, for example, a pencil.
- [00:04:06.840]And so I can draw with a pencil.
- [00:04:09.240]Or I can choose a silver metallic paint.
- [00:04:14.370]And so you can see, you can even see brush strokes,
- [00:04:17.250]which is an effect I love in this app.
- [00:04:20.310]So you can actually create
- [00:04:22.530]and see what the effect of those brush strokes are
- [00:04:26.640]and how it mixes with the colors underneath.
- [00:04:29.250]So there's tremendous amount of work that went into this
- [00:04:32.610]to really emulate paint.
- [00:04:34.740]Again, I don't think it replaces paint
- [00:04:37.290]but it adds to paint and it allows us to play
- [00:04:40.230]with what paint will do in any kind of picture.
- [00:04:45.000]And for example, I can add an element in watercolor,
- [00:04:48.300]maybe change the color a little bit
- [00:04:52.020]and do a little bit of red.
- [00:04:53.280]And you can see how the water almost smushes around
- [00:04:58.140]and reacts in a very watercolor way.
- [00:05:02.460]And I think that that's just fabulous
- [00:05:05.040]as the amount of work that they have done
- [00:05:08.340]to make that there.
- [00:05:09.386]The great thing is,
- [00:05:10.620]which is different than other
- [00:05:12.570]when working with paint in the real world,
- [00:05:14.280]of course, is the ability to erase,
- [00:05:16.230]which is available here just like it is in the other one.
- [00:05:22.350]You can see there are a lot of features
- [00:05:24.210]that are not available if you're not willing to pay.
- [00:05:28.050]But I believe that the features
- [00:05:30.120]that are available are quite fantastic
- [00:05:34.200]even without adding anything.
- [00:05:36.030]You can see, for example,
- [00:05:37.140]the kinds of paper you can draw on
- [00:05:39.390]as a way to support or make it more interesting.
- [00:05:43.200]I chose a canvas
- [00:05:44.760]but you can choose a light background
- [00:05:47.520]that takes away that canvas texture
- [00:05:49.770]and provides a different texture
- [00:05:51.600]and lots of things to play with.
- [00:05:55.230]I do love playing with a paint more than anything else.
- [00:05:58.770]And you can see the mixing here of the red
- [00:06:04.403]with a gray
- [00:06:07.110]or with a silver
- [00:06:08.790]and how slowly it overtakes if you just layer on the paint.
- [00:06:12.300]But again, those features are fantastic.
- [00:06:15.660]So today on the Art TEAMs podcast,
- [00:06:18.780]I talked about two apps that do not require you
- [00:06:21.390]to necessarily be online and that,
- [00:06:24.270]at least the first one,
- [00:06:25.740]Notes does not require anything special.
- [00:06:28.560]Neither of them requires logging in,
- [00:06:31.140]so kids can interact immediately.
- [00:06:32.820]If you have a few iPads in your classroom,
- [00:06:34.710]this is a great choice to create digital art.
- [00:06:37.980]And I'll see you next time on Art TEAMs podcast.
