- [00:00:00.360]All right, friends!
- [00:00:01.193]Let's go ahead and start gettin' ready for lunch,
- [00:00:02.850]get your area cleaned up, and we'll get lined up.
- [00:00:05.009](pleasant guitar playing)
- [00:00:06.120]Lockdown was a time when students spent less energy
- [00:00:08.820]on academics, and more energy on TikTok.
- [00:00:11.610]Today, the app has grown even more and more popular,
- [00:00:14.580]not just for students, but also for teachers.
- [00:00:17.520]To find out more, we looked into the TikTok
- [00:00:19.650]influencer life of Brian, elementary school teacher
- [00:00:22.350]in Omaha, Josh Monroe.
- [00:00:24.300]So, I started TikTok back in 2020
- [00:00:28.350]when the pandemic happened.
- [00:00:31.830]So, I just created a private account,
- [00:00:34.505]and I said, "Hey, if you come to all of math,
- [00:00:38.115]or if you come to all of reading,
- [00:00:39.090]I'll show you this funny video that Nala and I made."
- [00:00:41.940]Nala is Monroe's therapy dog
- [00:00:44.040]that he brings to class for his students.
- [00:00:46.624](dreamy music)
- [00:00:47.457]This is Nala, and I think she'd be a great
- [00:00:48.420]first friend for you 'cause she'll be in our class
- [00:00:50.490]a lot this year.
- [00:00:51.810]And when you're feeling
- [00:00:52.643]those big feelings of being overwhelmed or nervous,
- [00:00:54.810]or scared, you can always go over to her and give her
- [00:00:56.860]some loves, or a little hug.
- [00:00:59.100]Monroe's first TikTok is still a distinct memory for him,
- [00:01:02.550]and is the beginning of his social media journey.
- [00:01:05.280]I saw a video that a teacher had made on a kid sleeping,
- [00:01:09.060]and it rubbed me the wrong way,
- [00:01:11.220]I didn't like the way they handled it, so I made my own.
- [00:01:14.310]And that video blew up, it got like 12 million views.
- [00:01:18.985](person cheering)
- [00:01:19.818](children chattering)
- [00:01:20.651]Today, Monroe is still growing his TikTok account
- [00:01:23.220]with about 1.4 million followers.
- [00:01:26.340]So, why has Maine Monroe's TikTok
- [00:01:28.050]engaged so many people all over the world?
- [00:01:30.660]A lot of us just wanna be heard, right?
- [00:01:32.550]Like, we don't want to be told
- [00:01:34.230]our feelings are wrong, or anything,
- [00:01:36.330]we just want, we want people to talk to,
- [00:01:38.640]and we want people to listen to.
- [00:01:40.380]Social media is a tool that educational systems
- [00:01:43.170]can either choose to implement or not.
- [00:01:45.300]UNL Education Professor Guy Trainin says,
- [00:01:48.367]"There is a lot of conversations going on today
- [00:01:50.760]on this issue."
- [00:01:51.750]And teachers simply want to have a voice
- [00:01:53.670]in those conversations.
- [00:01:54.990]Professor Trainin expands on how
- [00:01:57.030]this new wave of technology
- [00:01:58.500]can become a teaching habit for all.
- [00:02:00.570]Some of the teachers, the teachers
- [00:02:02.010]that really like technology, and are willing
- [00:02:04.800]to put themselves out there,
- [00:02:06.150]and be like the person you talk to.
- [00:02:08.610]Because you've gotta decide that's something you're doing.
- [00:02:11.280]You know, this is social media.
- [00:02:13.418](children chattering)
- [00:02:15.334](objects clinking)
- [00:02:16.167]Monroe wants to leave other educators,
- [00:02:18.750]parents, and students with this message.
- [00:02:21.420]The importance of seeing kids as kids,
- [00:02:24.030]and talking to them, not down on them,
- [00:02:27.030]but talking to them, as they are young people learning.
- [00:02:31.770]For 90.3 KRNU, I'm Avery Lewis reporting.
- [00:02:36.030]This looks like it might be the video that does it for us!
- [00:02:38.422](upbeat music)
- [00:02:39.255]This is awesome!
