- [00:00:00.150]All right, thank you, Ben.
- [00:00:01.110]The Huskers getting to play a double-header today
- [00:00:03.060]here in Abilene, Texas,
- [00:00:04.500]and delighted to be joined by the Chancellor
- [00:00:05.850]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.860]I know you been to a couple of baseball games.
- [00:00:09.390]Saw you at the Jersey Retirement last Friday.
- [00:00:12.000]What do you think about those teams so far?
- [00:00:14.070]Well, you know, I think they got a lot of potential.
- [00:00:16.830]Great to see a team that, you know,
- [00:00:19.020]took off a number five top-ranked team
- [00:00:21.120]earlier in the season,
- [00:00:22.380]and, you know, now, they're almost
- [00:00:25.140]to the halfway point. Yeah.
- [00:00:26.780]In the season, and great to see 'em in Abilene,
- [00:00:29.070]part of my old stomping grounds down there.
- [00:00:30.780]I used to be in that part of the world, in Texas,
- [00:00:33.270]number of years ago, so the Abilene Christian folks
- [00:00:36.090]and the A&M folks that we're playing this weekend,
- [00:00:38.940]looking forward to a great game.
- [00:00:40.680]Well, you know, the one thing
- [00:00:42.270]that the university has been so proud of
- [00:00:43.830]is this entrepreneurship program.
- [00:00:45.810]It recently marked its first 10 years.
- [00:00:48.000]It's the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program.
- [00:00:51.750]Tell us about the impact that it has made on students
- [00:00:54.210]and even our alumni.
- [00:00:55.830]Well, the Engler Program
- [00:00:56.940]is something we're really proud of at U&L.
- [00:00:59.790]It was enabled by a $20 million philanthropic gift
- [00:01:03.720]from Paul Engler in 2010.
- [00:01:07.500]I had just come to the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:01:10.170]at the time that Paul had made this commitment
- [00:01:12.600]to start the Engler Program.
- [00:01:14.130]Now, Paul's an alum, University of Nebraska,
- [00:01:17.220]grew up in Bassett, Nebraska, up in the Sandhills,
- [00:01:20.520]has been an icon in the cattle industry
- [00:01:22.710]throughout his career.
- [00:01:24.510]Now in his late 80s in Texas, in Amarillo, Texas,
- [00:01:28.020]up the road here from Abilene. (chuckles) Yeah.
- [00:01:30.000]And Paul made this gift to establish
- [00:01:33.570]the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program
- [00:01:36.630]for students to come in,
- [00:01:39.270]be part of this program on scholarship support,
- [00:01:42.750]and to really hone their skills around entrepreneurship
- [00:01:45.810]and starting new businesses.
- [00:01:48.180]So you do the math, 2010 here recently
- [00:01:51.930]was the 10-year anniversary of the Engler Program.
- [00:01:54.570]We actually couldn't celebrate it during COVID,
- [00:01:56.790]so they've been doing that during 2022-2023,
- [00:02:01.950]and it's amazing to see what has happened in this program.
- [00:02:05.250]Now, 344 alumni from the Engler Program
- [00:02:08.730]over this period of time, they've started businesses
- [00:02:12.270]really all across Nebraska.
- [00:02:14.400]70 new businesses have started out of the Engler Program
- [00:02:19.020]by Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship scholars,
- [00:02:22.410]including, you know, 141 billion in revenue
- [00:02:25.890]out of these businesses that have started
- [00:02:28.800]from these students.
- [00:02:29.820]I see the success stories all the time.
- [00:02:32.659]I was recently out in the state and saw
- [00:02:35.340]one of these businesses in West Point
- [00:02:38.160]that is being successful in the beef marketing arena.
- [00:02:43.980]So just a great program
- [00:02:46.020]with some of the very top students
- [00:02:47.820]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:50.130]that are part of the Engler Program today.
- [00:02:52.980]It's also part of our kinda bigger
- [00:02:54.780]entrepreneurship culture on campus.
- [00:02:57.090]The Engler Program is one
- [00:02:58.380]of several entrepreneurship programs,
- [00:03:01.410]including the Center for Entrepreneurship
- [00:03:03.420]in our College of Business that engages a lot
- [00:03:06.390]of our students in the College of Business,
- [00:03:09.180]the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts
- [00:03:12.990]is also in the entrepreneurship space,
- [00:03:16.260]and then certainly the Raikes School
- [00:03:18.330]of Computer Science and Management
- [00:03:20.490]that is a longstanding now part of our campus
- [00:03:23.760]that has created new businesses as well.
- [00:03:27.240]So great to be celebrating the Engler Program
- [00:03:29.700]and the success that it's had since its founding in 2010.
- [00:03:33.030]Appreciate you updating us on all of that.
- [00:03:34.980]Good to catch up with you.
- [00:03:36.030]I know we're gonna be seeing you here in a few more times
- [00:03:38.010]before the end of the season.
- [00:03:38.850]Got a spring game coming up in a few weeks.
- [00:03:40.410]Always good to catch up with you.
- [00:03:41.670]You bet.
- [00:03:42.503]Looking forward to the spring game,
- [00:03:43.740]and, you know, it is coming up
- [00:03:44.953](host chuckling) all too soon.
- [00:03:46.611]It's all that. Hard to believe. Go Big Red.
