- [00:00:00.770]`- Hi, my name is Professor Kelly Kingsbury Brunetto.
- [00:00:05.010]And so when you come to UNL as a student,
- [00:00:08.310]I'm one of the people who helps with placements
- [00:00:10.620]because I also serve as the advisor
- [00:00:13.860]for the lower level, lower division courses.
- [00:00:17.370]And if you come in with a proficiency already
- [00:00:20.790]equal to or better than our intro sequence,
- [00:00:24.810]whether that's because you are a heritage speaker
- [00:00:27.630]or because you did really well
- [00:00:29.100]in your high school Spanish classes
- [00:00:30.720]and you're prepared for more advanced work,
- [00:00:32.520]I can help you get placed in the correct level.
- [00:00:36.090]And then I can also help you learn
- [00:00:37.890]about three retroactive credits
- [00:00:39.930]that you might be eligible to earn
- [00:00:41.760]depending upon where you can start.
- [00:00:44.310]Hi everyone.
- [00:00:45.360]My name is Iker González-Allende.
- [00:00:47.700]Spanish program offers Spanish courses about language,
- [00:00:52.830]Spanish language, cultures of the Spanish speaking world,
- [00:00:56.430]and also courses on linguistics.
- [00:00:59.370]We offer courses connected with numerous disciplines
- [00:01:02.700]such as medicine, human rights studies,
- [00:01:05.820]cultural literary studies, linguistics,
- [00:01:08.610]teaching, and history.
- [00:01:11.960]Hola, bienvenidos!
- [00:01:13.350]My name is Carol Subiabre.
- [00:01:15.240]Spanish is the second most spoken language,
- [00:01:17.550]not only in the US, but in the world,
- [00:01:20.610]second only to Mandarin Chinese.
- [00:01:23.670]Whatever your career may be, being able to communicate
- [00:01:27.120]in Spanish will increase your marketability
- [00:01:29.454]and perhaps most important, expand your world view.
- [00:01:33.915]Spanish is the official language in 21 countries
- [00:01:37.534]and when you learn the language,
- [00:01:39.406]you also experience the tremendous diversity
- [00:01:42.014]in the Hispanic world.
- [00:01:44.222]I am Professor Rigoberto Guevara.
- [00:01:45.733]I teach upper level courses of Spanish
- [00:01:47.940]and graduate seminars in different areas.
- [00:01:50.490]Among these areas,
- [00:01:51.810]I teach Latin American Civilization and Culture.
- [00:01:54.450]That is, the history of Latin America
- [00:01:56.400]but with an emphasis on human rights.
- [00:01:58.380]I also function as the undergraduate advisor
- [00:02:01.350]for Spanish majors and minors.
- [00:02:03.330]So, I'll be more than happy to guide you
- [00:02:05.220]into choosing the best classes
- [00:02:07.170]that are more interesting to you.
- [00:02:09.510]My name is Errapel Mejias-Vicandi.
- [00:02:12.150]My area of specialization is linguistics.
- [00:02:15.240]And the classes that I teach,
- [00:02:17.430]they investigate the linguistic,
- [00:02:19.320]in general, linguistic structures of Spanish.
- [00:02:22.408]These are classes where the student transitions
- [00:02:26.010]from learning the language to learning about the language.
- [00:02:30.600]So for instance, one class that I teach is
- [00:02:33.270]Introduction to Linguistic Analysis.
- [00:02:35.430]And in this class what we study is
- [00:02:37.470]how to describe the sounds of languages,
- [00:02:40.260]how to describe the structure of words in a language,
- [00:02:44.460]how to represent the structure of sentences,
- [00:02:47.490]how we assign meaning to sentences.
- [00:02:51.120]My name is Olatz Sanchez-Txabarri.
- [00:02:53.280]I am the coordinator of the study abroad program
- [00:02:56.030]of Spanish at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain,
- [00:03:00.000]which are both my hometown and the university
- [00:03:02.940]from where I graduated from my bachelor's.
- [00:03:05.280]This program at the University of Deusto
- [00:03:07.560]has been selected by Spanish faculty here
- [00:03:11.117]at UNL for Student of Spanish at UNL.
- [00:03:14.580]So it does not matter if you are doing a minor, a major,
- [00:03:18.330]or just taking Spanish courses at UNL,
- [00:03:21.360]everyone is able to participate on this program.
- [00:03:24.390]My name is Ana Tudela.
- [00:03:26.130]My role is being the coordinator for the NETIC.
- [00:03:30.032]The "NETIC" stands for
- [00:03:31.200]the Nebraska Translator and Interpreter Course.
- [00:03:34.912]And what we basically do is,
- [00:03:36.300]we provide the community of Lincoln
- [00:03:38.940]with the skills that we have.
- [00:03:40.320]Which is basically giving people
- [00:03:42.870]who may need these services:
- [00:03:44.511]translation and interpreting
- [00:03:46.350]in their native language or in English.
- [00:03:48.660]So basically we are creating a bridge
- [00:03:51.060]so that they can communicate
- [00:03:52.680]with the services that they may require.
- [00:03:55.824]Okay.

- [00:06:10.467]Hi, my name is Lara Garrido.
- [00:06:12.240]I currently work as a GTA, but I am also the director
- [00:06:15.120]of the Spanish Writing and Tutoring Center.
- [00:06:17.070]And we currently serve all the students taking
- [00:06:20.197]Spanish classes from Ham 100 levels all the way
- [00:06:23.430]to 400 level students.
- [00:06:25.410]We try to assist students Monday through Friday

- [00:06:33.390]So we're try to always be available.
- [00:06:35.946]Sometimes students can also come and
- [00:06:38.550]if they don't finally get all the help that they need
- [00:06:40.800]because they still have to work on their project
- [00:06:42.330]they can always reach out to us via email.
- [00:06:44.130]It's very common.
- [00:06:45.123](Lara Garrido speaking Spanish)
- [00:07:16.957]My name is Sebastian Cardenas
- [00:07:18.360]and I'm a senior Spanish major here at the University.
- [00:07:22.680]Sebastian, how has the Spanish Writing and Tutoring Center
- [00:07:26.040]helped you learning Spanish or developing your Spanish?
- [00:07:29.220]I think it's really helped me become more proficient
- [00:07:32.220]in grammar and speaking, and I think that's through working
- [00:07:34.980]with the professor and being able to actually sit there
- [00:07:37.320]with someone who's a native speaker that can correct me
- [00:07:40.980]where I'm screwing up and can help me
- [00:07:42.927]become more proficient.
