- [00:00:10.290]I think it's just good timing
- [00:00:13.350]because I have been thinking about,
- [00:00:16.140]you know, I have been trying to find
- [00:00:17.970]a really good textbook for my students.
- [00:00:20.610]However, due to the new recommendation to the course
- [00:00:25.530]and I couldn't find a really good textbook.
- [00:00:28.440]So I decided to develop my own materials
- [00:00:31.770]so that I can better follow the new recommendation
- [00:00:36.750]regarding the quantitative methods.
- [00:00:45.720]That would be maybe not to start from a new course.
- [00:00:51.300]The course I decided to develop
- [00:00:55.680]or transform into a OER course,
- [00:00:58.890]it is a course I have been teaching for several years.
- [00:01:02.910]I guess I have taught it about five, six times.
- [00:01:06.960]So yeah, based on my experience,
- [00:01:09.690]I have already collected a lot of materials,
- [00:01:13.020]developed my own materials,
- [00:01:14.850]and also collect a lot of feedback from previous students.
- [00:01:18.780]So maybe not to start from a new course.
- [00:01:22.050]That would be my advice.
- [00:01:29.280]Yeah, the biggest surprise is really from students.
- [00:01:32.850]All of the students, they really like the idea.
- [00:01:36.720]I guess first of all, because the cost, right?
- [00:01:40.380]We removed the required textbooks
- [00:01:43.950]and also I even removed the software, you know.
- [00:01:49.290]So the first thing about the software
- [00:01:52.590]is university already provide the free version of SPSS
- [00:01:59.010]and also I use the other one free software.
- [00:02:02.850]So that greatly reduced student cost.
- [00:02:11.250]They well received the OER course
- [00:02:15.000]because my course is a applied quantitative methods course
- [00:02:20.220]and it's really about how we can use the methods.
- [00:02:24.810]So my students, they are all grad students,
- [00:02:27.600]they understand they want to learn from journal articles.
- [00:02:32.700]You know, certainly textbooks are still helpful.
- [00:02:35.400]I still set recommended text books.
- [00:02:38.700]However, journal articles, they are more recent.
- [00:02:41.820]And some journal articles,
- [00:02:43.350]they follow the most recent recommendations,
- [00:02:46.710]so they can learn from those authors
- [00:02:48.780]how to apply those methods.
- [00:02:51.090]So I feel that's what I learned.
- [00:02:53.190]They like the idea.
- [00:02:54.870]They want to learn from the publications.
- [00:03:03.540]So first I collect my feedback from students
- [00:03:07.110]using my own survey.
- [00:03:09.420]So I usually have midterm survey
- [00:03:12.030]and also post-course survey.
- [00:03:14.640]I also ask them to write
- [00:03:16.800]a one page post-course reflection
- [00:03:19.980]to share with me how do they think about this course.
- [00:03:24.510]So that's why I collect their feedback.
- [00:03:27.930]And the one feedback is about the textbook.
- [00:03:30.990]Most of them, they like having no required textbook.
- [00:03:36.210]However, one particular students still recommend
- [00:03:39.060]that maybe we should have a textbook.
- [00:03:41.730]So this is my second time teaching an OER course.
- [00:03:46.230]So I said a textbook is recommended, not required,
- [00:03:51.840]and also it is free to students.
- [00:03:54.930]They can just use the textbook online.
- [00:03:57.390]It's a online, it's a really open resource textbook.
- [00:04:07.170]What is the actual effectiveness of OER course?
- [00:04:14.100]So I would like to work with other OER course instructors.
- [00:04:19.590]Maybe to work on a research project.
- [00:04:22.590]You know, we can either interview students
- [00:04:24.630]or we can do a survey together.
- [00:04:27.480]So we can know, you know,
- [00:04:29.040]to what extent students received our OER courses.
