- [00:00:00.000]Welcome to our first Soil Health Conference
- [00:00:03.750]of the year.
- [00:00:05.458]It is such a pleasure to see you guys here.
- [00:00:07.350]We are the new faces of the Soil Health Program at UNL.
- [00:00:11.580]My name is Caro Crdova,
- [00:00:14.250]and I am an assistant professor at UNL
- [00:00:17.580]and also serving as the statewide soil health specialist.
- [00:00:22.140]And I have next to me, my dear colleague Katja Koehler-Cole.
- [00:00:26.940]So I will let her to introduce herself.
- [00:00:30.360]Good morning, everyone.
- [00:00:31.230]We're so happy to see a full house, so many people.
- [00:00:34.200]That's awesome.
- [00:00:35.580]Yeah, I'm Katja Koehler-Cole.
- [00:00:36.840]I'm the Soil Health Extension Educator for the state.
- [00:00:40.650]Yeah, and we've had a lot of people that helped us today.
- [00:00:44.498]Nathan Mueller is also on our planning committee
- [00:00:47.220]and Erin Nigre.
- [00:00:49.410]Erin I think is out, just stepped out,
- [00:00:52.181]and a lot more people to thank,
- [00:00:56.310]Mike Christensen from IT,
- [00:00:58.110]Tony from facility.
- [00:01:00.420]So we had a lot of people help us set this up.
- [00:01:02.310]And yeah, we're hoping for a good conference.
- [00:01:05.220]Thanks for coming.
- [00:01:07.110]Great, so we are so happy to see you guys here.
- [00:01:10.530]We have, we are expecting to have today 165 attendees.
- [00:01:15.390]So that's a pretty good number for us.
- [00:01:18.390]And this really give us, like ask us or suggest us
- [00:01:23.430]that for next year we really need to find a bigger venue
- [00:01:26.910]so we will be able to host more people.
- [00:01:29.280]So unfortunately we had to decline some people
- [00:01:32.640]that register before the deadline.
- [00:01:34.470]So we're happy that you guys are here,
- [00:01:36.900]and next year we will be hoping that you will join us again
- [00:01:40.830]to our event.
- [00:01:42.660]So right now I'm going to share with you
- [00:01:44.430]like what we have in mind.
- [00:01:45.690]So Katja and I, we just started like a few months ago.
- [00:01:49.290]So we are setting up our soil health program here at UNL.
- [00:01:52.410]So let me share with you our strategic plan.
- [00:01:55.800]The vision of our program is to have these healthy soils
- [00:01:59.460]support healthy communities and ecosystems
- [00:02:02.610]promoting climate resilient farms
- [00:02:04.590]and profitable agroecosystems.
- [00:02:07.723]Our mission is that the UNL Soil Health Program
- [00:02:11.130]promotes and collaborates in statewide efforts
- [00:02:14.220]to improve the soil health of Nebraska's agroecosystems
- [00:02:17.790]by promoting regenerative agricultural practices.
- [00:02:21.330]So with that, I invite you guys to to join us
- [00:02:25.110]in building and also maintaining healthy soils in Nebraska.
- [00:02:29.610]And now I'm going to share the podium
- [00:02:33.210]with our Dean of Extension, Dr. Charlie Stoltenow.
- [00:02:36.990]So thank you very much and welcome again.
- [00:02:40.380]Caro, Katja, thank you.
- [00:02:42.090]Thank you very much.
- [00:02:43.800]It is indeed a pleasure
- [00:02:45.150]to welcome all of you to Soil Health Conference.
- [00:02:50.670]Stoltenow is a really difficult name for a lot of people,
- [00:02:53.370]and so I'm a veterinarian by training,
- [00:02:55.858]and I was in private practice,
- [00:02:56.691]and my clients have always called me Dr. Charlie.
- [00:02:59.370]So if you see Dr. Charlie out there, another thing,
- [00:03:02.880]oh my extension people,
- [00:03:05.698]I have a Twitter feed,
- [00:03:09.930]and everywhere I go and some of you follow me already.
- [00:03:12.600]And so what I ask is I'm gonna take a selfie
- [00:03:17.370]with all of you, and what I ask,
- [00:03:19.470]and Extension knows this already.
- [00:03:21.750]So what I'm gonna ask for
- [00:03:22.890]is when I take your picture with me, smile, right?
- [00:03:26.430]Like you're happy to be here, right?
- [00:03:28.590]Happy hands, right?
- [00:03:30.150]Thumbs up, right?
- [00:03:31.110]This is all class participation here.
- [00:03:33.150]All right, so let's get this over with,
- [00:03:35.940]and then we'll talk about a few other things.
- [00:03:37.920]Okay, you're all on.
- [00:03:39.450]Happy hands.
- [00:03:40.855]Come on.
- [00:03:41.773]Come on, guys.
- [00:03:42.606]I'm from Nebraska, I'm very happy.
- [00:03:43.680]Come on, show me the love.
- [00:03:46.530]Here we go, yes.
- [00:03:49.770]All right, thank you.
- [00:03:50.970]Okay, so I came outta North Dakota State.
- [00:03:54.390]I was there for 25 years.
- [00:03:55.980]North Dakota's had a very strong soil health program
- [00:03:58.470]for over a decade.
- [00:03:59.820]So I'm very familiar with soil health.
- [00:04:02.580]It's pivotal to all of agriculture
- [00:04:04.680]that we have incredible soils out there.
- [00:04:08.070]One of the things when I came here was
- [00:04:11.100]we had Extension, UNL, Nebraska Ag,
- [00:04:14.850]the Institute are great, doing a really good job.
- [00:04:18.660]But one of the things we wanted to do is listen.
- [00:04:21.210]And so as we listened on these little cards,
- [00:04:24.510]see the red card here?
- [00:04:25.980]All right, so if we go to the back, turn it around the back.
- [00:04:29.910]On the back are five issues
- [00:04:32.220]that are important to Nebraskans,
- [00:04:33.900]and it's because you told us.
- [00:04:35.880]These are not from extension, these are from you
- [00:04:39.870]and your neighbors.
- [00:04:41.370]And the big five, the five issues
- [00:04:43.170]are developing skilled workforce,
- [00:04:45.270]reducing healthcare costs,
- [00:04:47.130]creating statewide economic vitality,
- [00:04:49.207]retaining and attracting young people,
- [00:04:51.270]leveraging our strengths for sustained success.
- [00:04:53.880]So we listened to that.
- [00:04:55.370]In extension we do a lot of different things,
- [00:04:57.660]and we said one of the things though is we're confusing.
- [00:05:00.860]It's difficult for us to message back to you
- [00:05:04.290]the success stories that we're doing.
- [00:05:06.030]And so we're in the Big 10, right?
- [00:05:08.640]Go big red.
- [00:05:09.600]So we came up with the big three,
- [00:05:11.880]and as you open that up on the inside, the big three,
- [00:05:15.300]the first one is agriculture and food systems.
- [00:05:18.630]Nebraska's always been strong there.
- [00:05:20.340]We're gonna continue to be strong there.
- [00:05:22.590]The middle one is inspiring Nebraskans
- [00:05:24.390]and their communities.
- [00:05:25.500]It's all about prosperity, sustainability,
- [00:05:28.530]how do we move ahead,
- [00:05:29.610]and the last one is health and wellbeing.
- [00:05:32.790]We're not into interdiction.
- [00:05:34.620]We're not into treatment, but we are into prevention.
- [00:05:37.860]And so as I thought about health, and actually I was awake
- [00:05:40.590]at four o'clock this morning
- [00:05:41.790]thinking about what am I gonna say to you?
- [00:05:44.438]And the thought occurred to me on health.
- [00:05:48.600]So if you look at soil health, if you look at soil,
- [00:05:51.810]soil's not just dirt and some organic matter.
- [00:05:54.780]Soil is a very complex biological system, right?
- [00:05:59.370]Kind of like the human body's
- [00:06:00.720]a very complex biological system.
- [00:06:03.120]Where do you go if you've got something and you,
- [00:06:07.537]things are bad
- [00:06:09.270]or you have something that's unsolvable?
- [00:06:11.430]Well, one of the places we go to is the Mayo Clinic,
- [00:06:14.490]Rochester, Minnesota.
- [00:06:16.230]And what sets the Mayo Clinic apart from all the others
- [00:06:20.040]is most of healthcare is based on we have a specialist here,
- [00:06:23.610]we have a specialist here, we have a specialist here.
- [00:06:26.220]And the patient, the person has to go from one to another
- [00:06:28.980]to another to another.
- [00:06:30.900]As soon as you hit the desk at the Mayo Clinic,
- [00:06:33.960]it's a much more holistic,
- [00:06:35.490]all the specialists come to the patient
- [00:06:38.190]and try and help, figure out what's going on
- [00:06:40.230]and then prescribe some treatment or cure.
- [00:06:43.230]And so when you think about,
- [00:06:44.460]I have a challenge to UNL.
- [00:06:47.100]I have a challenge to my extension specialists
- [00:06:49.620]and educators.
- [00:06:50.453]I have a challenge to my researchers.
- [00:06:52.230]I have a challenge to the teachers.
- [00:06:55.110]I think the challenge is this.
- [00:06:57.990]Can UNL become the Mayo Clinic of soil Health?
- [00:07:02.460]Because we have the assets, we have you,
- [00:07:06.150]we have the support,
- [00:07:07.920]can we put this together and come at soil health
- [00:07:11.070]as a very holistic solving problems that need solving
- [00:07:15.330]that we do for you.
- [00:07:16.350]So welcome.
- [00:07:17.520]Thank you very much.
- [00:07:19.200]Thank you very much Dr. Charlie.
- [00:07:21.000]So another thing, in your tables
- [00:07:25.770]you guys have the program
- [00:07:27.780]as well as the survey and other sheets from other companies.
- [00:07:32.790]So please don't forget to fill out the survey at the end,
- [00:07:36.480]towards the end of the day and just leave it on your table.
- [00:07:40.530]And in the program you can see
- [00:07:42.570]that we have morning sessions, afternoon sessions,
- [00:07:45.470]and there will be some breaks too.
- [00:07:48.600]Don't forget that we have restrooms
- [00:07:50.670]on the east and west side of the building,
- [00:07:53.190]like on both ends,
- [00:07:55.080]as well as we have coffee, water, and donuts over here
- [00:07:59.247]please also if we could recycle some cans
- [00:08:02.520]that will be great.
- [00:08:03.353]There are like special bins for that.
- [00:08:05.640]And again, this event was not possible
- [00:08:09.540]without the help also and the support,
- [00:08:11.460]the kind support of the Nebraska Soybean Board.
- [00:08:15.090]So please join me to give them thanks
- [00:08:17.970]with a big round of applause.
