- [00:00:05.850]Hallo, (speaking in German) Deutsche professor
- [00:00:08.490]and the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:11.304]I'm going to briefly introduce our program to you.
- [00:00:15.900]So I will start by telling you a little bit
- [00:00:19.440]about the German major at UNL.
- [00:00:21.750]I want to emphasize this is how our major works
- [00:00:24.450]but this is also how the German major
- [00:00:26.520]at most colleges will work, at least approximately.
- [00:00:29.730]And so I really wanna encourage you to think
- [00:00:31.470]about studying German
- [00:00:32.910]and continuing with German
- [00:00:34.410]wherever you go to school.
- [00:00:36.990]So for our major, as you see,
- [00:00:40.470]you start with 101, 102, 201, 202.
- [00:00:42.780]This is basically German 1, 2, 3, 4 in high school.
- [00:00:48.420]Then we have those blue courses at the bottom.
- [00:00:50.340]It's 9 courses.
- [00:00:51.360]These are the courses with
- [00:00:53.146]more complex topics that require sort of
- [00:00:56.220]already an AP level of German.
- [00:00:59.280]On that note, I really wanna emphasize
- [00:01:01.350]if you're sitting in a German class right now,
- [00:01:03.556]if you're finishing German 2, you're probably gonna jump
- [00:01:06.750]into this curriculum at the 201 level.
- [00:01:09.990]If you're in a fourth year class or maybe an AP class
- [00:01:12.415]you might jump in at the 300 level already,
- [00:01:16.020]which would mean you only have to do 9 courses
- [00:01:18.090]to complete the German major.
- [00:01:19.680]So that's very achievable
- [00:01:22.050]sort of wherever you're coming from.
- [00:01:24.300]There's also the minor option, which is easy
- [00:01:28.230]for anyone with they're starting with no German or not.
- [00:01:31.950]And in this if you're coming in with,
- [00:01:33.720]you know, AP say already
- [00:01:36.090]you're only gonna need 4 courses to complete a minor.
- [00:01:38.190]So it would really be a mistake
- [00:01:40.050]not to continue your German studies when you move
- [00:01:42.690]into the university level and get at least that minor.
- [00:01:47.790]I want to talk a little bit about some of the different
- [00:01:49.440]course types that we offer.
- [00:01:51.690]We have courses about German literature and film.
- [00:01:54.450]Right here you see an image from Nosferatu.
- [00:01:57.720]We have courses about global business and German.
- [00:02:02.040]We have an expert for that here at UNL.
- [00:02:04.950]We also have courses about
- [00:02:06.030]German culture and history in Nebraska.
- [00:02:08.100]What you see on this slide are
- [00:02:09.634]newspapers from Nebraska from around World War I
- [00:02:14.370]writing in German.
- [00:02:15.884]And of course all kinds of other topics
- [00:02:18.660]that have to do with history and language and culture.
- [00:02:23.430]In addition, we have a study abroad program in Berlin.
- [00:02:27.480]In a moment, my colleague Patty Simpson is gonna tell you
- [00:02:30.210]about that program and also
- [00:02:32.370]about something about what faculty research looks
- [00:02:34.350]like at our schools and a little more
- [00:02:35.940]a little more insight into the classroom experience.
- [00:02:39.300]And we also have a lot of extracurricular activities
- [00:02:42.060]and our German teaching assistants,
- [00:02:45.060]the sort of graduate students who also teach some
- [00:02:46.770]of those elementary classes.
- [00:02:48.600]They're gonna tell you a little bit about
- [00:02:50.220]a little bit about those in a moment.
- [00:02:54.150]And then we will also have some student voices to
- [00:02:57.780]give you a little bit of the student experience at UNL.
- [00:03:01.200]So I'm gonna turn it over now to Patty
- [00:03:03.210]and the graduate students.
- [00:03:04.650]I hope you enjoy.
- [00:03:08.220]Hi everyone, my name's Patty Simpson.
- [00:03:10.440]I'm professor of German and German studies
- [00:03:13.440]at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
- [00:03:16.849](speaking in German)
- [00:03:19.620]I'd like to talk to you just a little bit today
- [00:03:21.450]about the work we do here in terms
- [00:03:23.250]of research, teaching, study abroad, and integrating
- [00:03:26.670]all of the above with German language learning.
- [00:03:29.700]Here's an overview of some of the scholarship
- [00:03:31.740]that I've produced over the last couple of decades.
- [00:03:35.280]And this is a forthcoming book
- [00:03:37.680]on international film and neoliberalism.
- [00:03:42.570]You'll see from the fact that I'm working
- [00:03:45.180]with two co-authors here that
- [00:03:46.649]I really enjoy cooperating with colleagues
- [00:03:50.490]and students from all over the country
- [00:03:53.280]and all over the world, in fact.
- [00:03:55.590]Here are some of the co-edited volumes that I've produced
- [00:03:59.460]along with colleagues over the last few years.
- [00:04:03.810]You'll see from the titles that I have
- [00:04:06.060]wide ranging interests
- [00:04:07.920]in war, in religion, in leadership, in power,
- [00:04:12.480]in digital media,
- [00:04:14.820]and also
- [00:04:15.690]in political culture.
- [00:04:21.600]In Fall 2021, the university was able to
- [00:04:25.110]resume faculty-led study abroad programs.
- [00:04:28.650]I served as resident director in Berlin
- [00:04:31.050]for the full semester
- [00:04:33.362]and you'll see a group of students masked outdoors
- [00:04:36.360]in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
- [00:04:38.910]Little bit later in the semester
- [00:04:40.410]we were able to take a break from our seminar
- [00:04:42.540]held at the Humboldt-Institut,
- [00:04:44.700]to run up to the Dak Terrassa
- [00:04:48.648]and watch the sunset.
- [00:04:52.980]We also were able to celebrate holidays
- [00:04:55.530]from carving pumpkins for Halloween,
- [00:04:59.700]to the splendor of the Weihnachtsmarkt
- [00:05:03.180]at the Alexanderplatz.
- [00:05:04.950]You can see the television tower in the background.
- [00:05:08.460]But we also had an opportunity to take a tour
- [00:05:12.420]of the same territory,
- [00:05:13.890]which was by then fairly familiar to us,
- [00:05:16.710]but we saw it from a different perspective.
- [00:05:19.080]We went on a walking tour with a man
- [00:05:21.060]who's a refugee from Syria
- [00:05:23.310]and he told us his stories about migration, being a refugee,
- [00:05:29.100]and finding some kind of refuge in the city of Berlin.
- [00:05:36.840]We took day trips from Berlin
- [00:05:38.730]and one of them brought us to Leipzig.
- [00:05:41.550]You'll see here a perhaps familiar
- [00:05:45.540]pub,
- [00:05:46.373]called, Auerbachs Keller,
- [00:05:47.820]known from Faust 1 by Goethe.
- [00:05:52.020]And I bring my scholarly work together
- [00:05:55.380]with my leading of study abroad
- [00:05:57.690]and all of it integrated into my Lincoln classrooms.
- [00:06:03.630]From Leipzig to my editing of the Goethe yearbook,
- [00:06:08.010]to my current teaching assignment
- [00:06:10.470]which is a seminar on magic and myths.
- [00:06:14.700]I do my best to integrate German language, culture
- [00:06:19.260]and history and literature.
- [00:06:21.990]The image on the right is of me in a
- [00:06:26.280]cap, gown, and hood,
- [00:06:28.680]because I'm introducing the Scholar Faust
- [00:06:31.500]through the English Faust book.
- [00:06:34.050]We are very committed
- [00:06:35.640]to project-based learning here on the Lincoln campus.
- [00:06:39.810]And for this class,
- [00:06:42.450]the project will involve
- [00:06:45.060]researching, hosting and performing in
- [00:06:49.050]a Walpurgisnacht celebration,
- [00:06:51.570]the Witches Sabbath,
- [00:06:52.680]later this semester,
- [00:06:54.210]essentially to celebrate the coming of Spring.
- [00:07:05.400]Hallo, (speaking in German).
- [00:07:07.179](speaking in German) Nick.
- [00:07:08.012]This is Carmen, Ashton, and Karina.
- [00:07:11.160]We are the German TAs,
- [00:07:14.460]teaching assistants
- [00:07:16.740]and we're going to tell you about some
- [00:07:18.770]of the great extracurriculars that we do
- [00:07:20.280]here in the German section.
- [00:07:21.840]Carmen, could you tell us a little bit about Stammtisch?
- [00:07:23.803]Yeah, so Stammtisch is an event that we throw every week.
- [00:07:27.450]It's hosted downtown in Lincoln at the watering hole
- [00:07:31.920]and it's a super low stress event
- [00:07:35.310]that we throw where we just come and speak German,
- [00:07:37.740]we hang out,
- [00:07:38.910]they have some really good food there.
- [00:07:42.060]Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
- [00:07:44.370]Okay, and Ashton, could you tell us
- [00:07:46.200]a little bit about Spieleabend?
- [00:07:49.590]Yeah, gladly.
- [00:07:51.621]Spieleabend is a board game night.
- [00:07:54.210]It happens about once a month,
- [00:07:56.220]we collaborate with UNL German Club to make sure somebody
- [00:07:59.820]from the club is there.
- [00:08:01.590]All students from all levels are invited to come
- [00:08:03.990]and play fun games.
- [00:08:07.440]And we have all sorts of German games,
- [00:08:09.300]so there's really something for everybody at Spieleabend.
- [00:08:12.810]All right, and Karina,
- [00:08:13.980]could you tell us a little bit about Filmabend?
- [00:08:16.651]Yeah, so Filmabend,
- [00:08:17.760]they usually do like a series of films like every semester
- [00:08:21.120]and they're held like twice a month.
- [00:08:23.190]So it's pretty low anxiety too.
- [00:08:24.810]It's less talking
- [00:08:26.070]and more just watching the movie,
- [00:08:28.170]whatever it may be.
- [00:08:30.571]And you get to know ahead of time
- [00:08:32.070]what you're gonna watch.
- [00:08:32.903]You don't just show up and you watch something,
- [00:08:34.530]but yeah.
- [00:08:37.200]Okay, so that's, that'll be it for us
- [00:08:40.560]from the TAs.
- [00:08:44.070]Ciao!
- [00:08:45.280](simultaneously) Cheers.
- [00:08:52.440]Hallo, (speaking in German) Jason.
- [00:08:54.900](speaking in German)
- [00:09:06.932](background chatter)
- [00:09:08.940](speaking in German)
- [00:09:11.242]Here at the Sprachlabor,
- [00:09:12.330]we can always see that somebody is here to help you
- [00:09:14.791]with a foreign language.
- [00:09:16.260]Today happens to be German.
- [00:09:21.802](background chatter)
- [00:09:23.892](speaking in German)
- [00:09:26.400]So this is our Sprachlabor.
- [00:09:28.530]Usually you can find students inside playing games
- [00:09:31.440]like, Go Fish, like they are now,
- [00:09:34.170]as well as studying for tests or getting help
- [00:09:36.840]with translations or anything else that one might need.
- [00:09:41.970]Hallo, (speaking in German) Matthew.
- [00:09:43.599](speaking German)
- [00:09:51.718](speaking German) Franklin.
- [00:09:54.176](speaking in German)
- [00:10:06.726](speaking in German) Jake.
- [00:10:09.626](speaking in German)
- [00:10:14.310]And my favorite part of the German program,
- [00:10:17.280]is studying abroad in Berlin.
- [00:10:20.806](speaking in German)
- [00:10:21.766](laughing)
- [00:10:23.038](speaking German) Dylan.
- [00:10:24.886](speaking German)
- [00:10:29.684](speaking in German)
- [00:10:37.558](speaking in German)
- [00:10:42.586](laughing)
- [00:10:44.328](speaking in German)
- [00:10:48.986](speaking in German)
- [00:10:52.811](speaking in German)
- [00:10:54.372](laughing)
