- [00:02:57.747][00:02:58 French]
- [00:03:15.950]I've been a French graduate student at UNL for four years
- [00:03:19.380]and a graduate student of literature here for seven.
- [00:03:22.380]I picked French because I think
- [00:03:24.060]that the literature is magnificent
- [00:03:25.800]and I'm obsessed with all of the authors
- [00:03:27.900]that I've encountered
- [00:03:29.520]but also because I think
- [00:03:30.570]that French is a great way to explore the world
- [00:03:33.120]and to get to know a variety of other cultures.
- [00:03:35.460]And wherever you go in the world
- [00:03:36.960]you're able to find French speakers.
- [00:03:39.120]I like to travel, so this was always the plan.
- [00:03:42.360]I picked UNL to the study in really
- [00:03:44.880]because of the remarkable professors that we have here
- [00:03:47.250]and the remarkable students.
- [00:03:49.140]Everyone's just full of energy and enthusiasm
- [00:03:51.720]and it's wonderful to show up to work every day
- [00:03:54.510]when the joie de vivre is evident on here.
- [00:03:57.486][00:03:55 French]
- [00:04:07.496]I'll go ahead and speak in English as well.
- [00:04:09.810]Just a few words about our department.
- [00:04:12.600]I love it so much.
- [00:04:14.610]I did my undergrad here a long time ago.
- [00:04:18.690]You can't tell how gray my hair is,
- [00:04:20.220]but it's pretty gray.
- [00:04:21.810]A long time ago and I did a master's degree here as well
- [00:04:25.410]and two years abroad and every time I just kept coming back
- [00:04:30.270]to the University of Nebraska because I love it so much.
- [00:04:32.790]I love my colleagues, I love my students.
- [00:04:37.440]I personally teach
- [00:04:38.940]19th century French history and literature.
- [00:04:42.660]I actually just stepped out of a classroom with
- [00:04:44.700]Joanna who's on the other side of the camera.
- [00:04:47.160]We're talking about Voltaire and his ideas
- [00:04:51.120]just before the French Revolution.
- [00:04:53.640]So I hope to see you all soon.
- [00:04:55.620]Please come join us at UNL. Ciao.
- [00:04:58.566][00:04:59 French]
- [00:05:08.640]I think our program at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:05:12.210]is special because we offer a wide variety of courses
- [00:05:15.870]ranging from beginning to advanced grammar, phonetics,
- [00:05:19.680]literary and non-literary translation, body language,
- [00:05:23.460]environmental literature of the French speaking world,
- [00:05:27.330]revolutions in France and out of France.
- [00:05:31.320]And we have such a wide variety of topics
- [00:05:35.190]that should pique interests of almost anybody.
- [00:05:37.890]So we have a fun, small, yet dynamic department
- [00:05:43.050]with really dedicated professors and instructors
- [00:05:47.880]and it's a great place to be.
- [00:05:49.530]Hey, my name's Ryan Schmid.
- [00:05:51.180]I am a GTA here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:56.959]I used to teach French and now I'm the language lab manager.
- [00:06:00.390]I just wanted to say very briefly why
- [00:06:02.430]I am doing this degree.
- [00:06:04.620]The primary reason was always the people.
- [00:06:07.950]The instructors here are really cool
- [00:06:10.560]and they're really helpful when you're learning French
- [00:06:13.620]but also once you're starting to master French,
- [00:06:17.220]they're just so knowledgeable
- [00:06:18.810]and their classes are super enjoyable.
- [00:06:22.320]I mean, I did a computer science degree
- [00:06:24.750]but then I came back to do a master's degree in French
- [00:06:27.450]which should go to show how passionate everyone is here
- [00:06:31.650]and how passionate that they've made me in French.
- [00:06:40.860]So this is the language lab office.
- [00:06:43.080]This is where I work
- [00:06:44.909]but students are free to reserve this if they like.
- [00:06:48.660]There's lots of neat things in here.
- [00:06:50.460]Here's obviously where you can meet
- [00:06:53.640]and you know you can do this for class
- [00:06:55.680]or just to study, things like that.
- [00:06:58.560]This is where we keep like our VR stuff
- [00:07:01.770]so you can interact with VR.
- [00:07:04.110]There's tons of cool apps that you can use.
- [00:07:07.936]Here's a record player
- [00:07:10.620]and this is like a little lounge space,
- [00:07:13.080]with the big tv and there are all of our records.
- [00:07:17.036]And in here, if you'll excuse the darkness,
- [00:07:21.150]is our 3D printer
- [00:07:22.560]which is also available for students to use
- [00:07:24.570]and some more VR equipment and another big TV.
- [00:07:27.720]And here is the actual language lab itself.
- [00:07:31.230]So this is a larger space of course
- [00:07:33.630]where students are free to do things like study, typically,
- [00:07:39.390]throughout the day, but also organize like movie nights.
- [00:07:43.020]There's a big TV out front here,
- [00:07:45.960]organize club events or even reserve the lab
- [00:07:49.350]for smaller groups, things like that.
- [00:07:51.720]So there's lots of tables,
- [00:07:53.772]lots of seating space for you both to study quietly
- [00:07:57.360]by yourself or maybe with a couple partners.
- [00:08:00.360]Or you could put tables together
- [00:08:01.830]and do something like have larger group study sessions.
- [00:08:07.050]Obviously you can lounge on the couches and watch TV.
- [00:08:10.650]We have a Netflix account
- [00:08:13.140]and there's also this new space that we just added
- [00:08:16.350]this maker space that where you can essentially
- [00:08:21.480]use these to do whatever you want.
- [00:08:23.550]You can be creative with them, you can draw, we've got clay.
- [00:08:31.922][00:08:32 French]
- [00:08:41.700]Every summer I'm also the faculty leader
- [00:08:44.400]and I take a group of student
- [00:08:46.440]to Anjer right here for four weeks
- [00:08:51.750]during the months of July.
- [00:08:53.790]Students go to a French school
- [00:08:56.010]they stay with a host family
- [00:08:57.690]and they participate to many excursions.
- [00:09:01.509][00:09:03 French]
- [00:09:05.122][00:09:09 French]
- [00:09:15.600]It's a delight for me to be a professor of French.
- [00:09:18.870]I learned French when I was 11 years old, kind of.
- [00:09:22.080]And then I studied it a bit more in college.
- [00:09:24.000]And then while I was studying in college
- [00:09:26.988]I fell in love with it.
- [00:09:28.523]And so at age 22 I fell in love and at age,
- [00:09:30.793]whatever age I am now, I'm still in love
- [00:09:32.190]and I still get the opportunity to teach it,
- [00:09:34.440]to introduce it to people like you
- [00:09:36.810]and to to help students embark
- [00:09:40.740]on an education in a field that means more
- [00:09:43.590]to me than anything in this world.
- [00:09:46.380]I would love to see you come
- [00:09:47.897]to UNL to study French language, culture, literature,
- [00:09:53.483]particularly given the opportunities for study abroad.
- [00:09:56.730]We have faculty led programs in Anger
- [00:10:01.440]in the summer for, sort of, second year students.
- [00:10:05.580]We have the possibility of studying in (indistinct)
- [00:10:09.660]in the south of France for more advanced classes.
- [00:10:12.810]We even have at the graduate level
- [00:10:15.000]an exchange with the University of (indistinct) Valley.
- [00:10:18.630]So you can spend a year
- [00:10:20.444]in France teaching English at that university.
- [00:10:22.380]Or of course there's always the TAPIF,
- [00:10:24.120]another possibility for spending a year in France
- [00:10:26.790]and teaching English and getting paid for it.
- [00:10:29.280]There are so many possibilities
- [00:10:30.720]and French is such a wonderful field.
- [00:10:32.790]I really hope that you will consider coming to see us
- [00:10:35.850]at UNL to talk to us about that.
- [00:10:38.370]Write me specifically.
- [00:10:39.690]I'd be delighted to tell you more.
- [00:10:42.157]Jstump2@unl.edu.
- [00:10:44.880]Thanks for listening.
- [00:10:46.870]See you.
- [00:10:49.259](upbeat music)
- [00:10:52.440]Hi, my name is Sloan.
- [00:10:54.698]I'm just a sophomore at UNL
- [00:10:56.474]but I have taken three French courses
- [00:10:57.690]and I plan to take many more.
- [00:10:59.580]When I started taking these language classes
- [00:11:01.650]I was just going to be doing the minimum
- [00:11:04.020]for what I needed to get my major fulfilled.
- [00:11:07.740]But since then I've decided to actually double major
- [00:11:10.410]in French because of how interesting I found these classes.
- [00:11:14.100]And I did take language classes in high school.
- [00:11:16.350]I didn't have any problems with them
- [00:11:17.790]but I also didn't get as deep of an interest as I have now.
- [00:11:21.810]And I think that is due
- [00:11:23.520]to just the way the language department at UNL is.
- [00:11:27.390]Every staff member is so kind.
- [00:11:29.700]All of my language teachers have been just so
- [00:11:32.580]very sweet to me.
- [00:11:33.480]They're energetic, they keep me focused in class
- [00:11:36.330]with this kind of hands-on learning style
- [00:11:38.850]and they really made me interested
- [00:11:41.160]in the topic in a way that I hadn't been before.
- [00:11:43.470]So I love UNL.
- [00:11:46.024]I love the language department
- [00:11:46.857]and I highly recommend taking a course.
- [00:11:49.887]Bounjour, my name is Brianna
- [00:11:51.750]and I'm currently a junior at UNL.
- [00:11:54.690]I am in my third course of French
- [00:11:57.900]and it's been one of the best experiences
- [00:12:00.240]that I have had at UNL.
- [00:12:03.000]A lot of the friends that I have met
- [00:12:05.580]and have now currently I've met through my French classes.
- [00:12:09.450]And the professors are amazing,
- [00:12:12.030]extremely supportive and inclusive on any level of French
- [00:12:16.380]even if you don't know any.
- [00:12:18.330]So I think you guys should learn French and do it at UNL.
- [00:12:23.824]Thank you.
- [00:12:27.024](upbeat music)
