- [00:00:00.236]Halftime, the Huskers in Illinois.
- [00:00:02.850]I'm Matt Coatney, and as always,
- [00:00:04.800]we are happy to welcome University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:07.650]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:10.530]Ronnie, last week of the regular season
- [00:00:12.450]for this Husker team,
- [00:00:13.320]and I understand you might be making the trip
- [00:00:15.900]to Minneapolis next week for the conference tournament.
- [00:00:18.540]Well, that's right, Matt.
- [00:00:19.510]We are planning to be in Minneapolis next week
- [00:00:22.470]for the conference tourney, and I'm looking forward to that.
- [00:00:25.350]Certainly, we'd love to see our lady Huskers
- [00:00:27.950]finish the game strong today against Illinois,
- [00:00:32.100]and for a big Husker crowd to welcome 'em back home,
- [00:00:35.670]and for their last home game on Sunday against Northwestern.
- [00:00:39.110]It's always important to have good momentum
- [00:00:42.060]going into the tournament season.
- [00:00:44.010]And last year, you'll remember,
- [00:00:45.840]we had a nice big run into the Big Ten tournament,
- [00:00:48.630]and open an NCAA round game,
- [00:00:51.750]and so I'm excited to see what they can do
- [00:00:53.730]with the rest of the season.
- [00:00:55.050]And in the post-season,
- [00:00:56.250]you need to be able to score
- [00:00:57.510]and play tough defense.
- [00:00:59.310]Nebraska engineering faculty are experts
- [00:01:01.800]in defending our safety on the road,
- [00:01:03.480]and they're using that expertise to innovate
- [00:01:05.670]and make military bases even safer.
- [00:01:08.460]What can you tell us about their research?
- [00:01:10.500]Well, Matt, we have for a long time
- [00:01:13.123]in our Department of Civil Engineering
- [00:01:15.420]and Nebraska Engineering,
- [00:01:16.530]the College of Engineering here at the university,
- [00:01:18.879]been home to being a leader in the transportation arena,
- [00:01:23.820]and the engineering of transportation in our society.
- [00:01:29.309]We are currently the home
- [00:01:31.410]of the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility
- [00:01:34.890]that's part of the Nebraska Transportation Center,
- [00:01:38.070]and are the developers, or a lot of people may not know,
- [00:01:41.580]of the Midwest Guardrail System.
- [00:01:43.980]It's the most widely used roadside barrier system
- [00:01:47.160]that you see on interstate highways
- [00:01:49.200]and in our transportation system.
- [00:01:52.590]They are currently continuing the development
- [00:01:57.000]of a modified guardrail system around defense support.
- [00:02:00.750]So think of our military installations
- [00:02:03.694]that are under the US Transportation Command,
- [00:02:07.325]and they're working on a guardrail system there
- [00:02:10.620]that will be a much stronger defense barrier
- [00:02:14.190]around those critical kinds of facilities.
- [00:02:16.800]The culmination of this project will be the ability
- [00:02:20.100]of a new barrier to absorb,
- [00:02:21.660]think of a 15,000-pound truck
- [00:02:24.720]impacting at 50 miles per hour,
- [00:02:26.984]coming in at a right angle, if you will,
- [00:02:29.220]at a perpendicular angle to a facility like that.
- [00:02:33.205]This work leverages the one-of-a-kind installation
- [00:02:36.690]and the full-scale testing capabilities of the UNL
- [00:02:39.270]Midwest Roadside Safety Facility I mentioned earlier.
- [00:02:42.540]That is part of the Nebraska Transportation Center
- [00:02:45.870]in our College of Engineering
- [00:02:47.130]led by our engineering faculty,
- [00:02:48.845]involving students both in civil engineering
- [00:02:51.870]and mechanical engineering in that work as well.
- [00:02:55.405]This particular work in the defense arena is also tied
- [00:03:00.300]to our National Strategic Research Institute
- [00:03:02.730]at the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:04.080]that works on defense-related matters.
- [00:03:07.290]So big work, big important work happen
- [00:03:10.303]in the College of Engineering
- [00:03:12.630]and at the Nebraska Transportation Center
- [00:03:16.380]in this great work around defense.
- [00:03:18.870]I'm just always amazed everything that happens here
- [00:03:21.000]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:22.230]Chancellor Ronnie Green, really appreciate the time today.
- [00:03:25.140]Yo, go Big Red.
- [00:03:26.074]Go Big red.
- [00:03:27.540]Matt Coatney with you more halftime comes your way
- [00:03:29.610]in just a few moments.
- [00:03:30.690]This is Big Red basketball.
