- [00:00:12.930]that's always a fun and festive thing,
- [00:00:15.060]hope everybody's taking care

- [00:00:17.250]And we're on the road with basketball.
- [00:00:18.960]We are actually getting the baseball seasons

- [00:00:24.060]Softball started last weekend in Houston.
- [00:00:25.890]I bet you're ready for some ball bat action here.
- [00:00:28.170]Well, I am, you know, and it is Valentine's Day
- [00:00:30.450]so a little romance in the air everywhere for everybody.
- [00:00:32.730]And you know,
- [00:00:34.020]today and then tomorrow actually,
- [00:00:36.399]the 15th, is the university's birthday.
- [00:00:39.180]It's charter day at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:41.130]February 15th, 1869.
- [00:00:42.930]So, our 154th birthday candle is
- [00:00:45.000]on the cake for tomorrow as well,
- [00:00:47.160]excited about that.
- [00:00:48.480]And it is exciting to be at this time of year,
- [00:00:50.731]where we're beginning
- [00:00:52.050]to see baseball and softball go into action.
- [00:00:55.710]The men's baseball team going
- [00:00:57.840]into action this weekend
- [00:00:59.580]out on the West Coast
- [00:01:00.690]at the University of San Diego.
- [00:01:02.460]You know, most of our folks in Nebraska know that
- [00:01:05.430]that's where John Cook's from, right?
- [00:01:07.950]And so they're
- [00:01:09.511]kicking into action.
- [00:01:11.160]They had a great fan event
- [00:01:12.330]at the Hawks last week.
- [00:01:13.440]And so, looking forward
- [00:01:15.060]to a great season for our baseball team.
- [00:01:17.850]Just in a few weeks,
- [00:01:19.080]they'll be kicking off at Hawks Field
- [00:01:20.820]March the seventh against Northern Colorado.
- [00:01:23.490]And then our softball team,
- [00:01:24.840]our big 10 champion softball team from last year,
- [00:01:27.607]is in Houston currently
- [00:01:29.628]in a conference and excited about
- [00:01:31.628]a tournament, not a conference tournament,
- [00:01:33.960]but a tournament playing this weekend as well.
- [00:01:35.910]So great to see the bats beginning to swing
- [00:01:37.770]in baseball and softball.
- [00:01:39.180]No doubt.
- [00:01:40.013]Well, the University recently got some really good news
- [00:01:42.330]about two faculty members who've been recognized
- [00:01:44.940]by their peers in the scientific world.
- [00:01:47.490]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:01:49.560]Yeah, Greg, a big honor.
- [00:01:51.604]If you were a research member
- [00:01:54.720]in the research community and the science community,
- [00:01:57.660]one of the most prestigious honors is to be recognized
- [00:02:00.750]as a fellow of the American Association
- [00:02:03.060]for the Advancement of Science.
- [00:02:04.350]So, we lingo will call it AAAS.
- [00:02:07.860]That's the most prestigious scientific society in the world.
- [00:02:12.520]Publishes Science Magazine,
- [00:02:14.340]which is the most prestigious science publication
- [00:02:16.500]in the world,
- [00:02:17.910]actually started Science Magazine
- [00:02:19.740]actually was started by a Nebraskan,
- [00:02:21.909]you know, Charles Bessey.
- [00:02:24.240]Who Bessey Hall on our campus is named for
- [00:02:26.610]back in our history here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:29.460]And this year we're very proud
- [00:02:31.860]that two of our faculty have been named as AAAS Fellows
- [00:02:35.998]and in recognition of their research stature
- [00:02:39.510]in their fields.
- [00:02:40.980]Both of them in our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:02:43.833]Oleh Khalimonchuk,
- [00:02:45.685]who is in our department of biochemistry,
- [00:02:48.480]works in the area of redox biology
- [00:02:50.730]particularly understanding the function of mitochondria,
- [00:02:54.240]the energy storehouse of the cell that make up all of us.
- [00:02:59.100]So,
- [00:02:59.933]Oleh is also from Ukraine.
- [00:03:02.430]I was mentioned that he has original ancestry
- [00:03:05.490]in Ukraine and has been active in support
- [00:03:08.280]of what's happening in supporting Ukraine.
- [00:03:11.580]And then Rich Wilson,
- [00:03:13.170]who is a professor in our plant pathology department,
- [00:03:16.165]for his distinguished contributions
- [00:03:18.360]to the understanding of devastating Blast disease
- [00:03:21.900]in plants caused by fungal pathogens.
- [00:03:24.750]So, both of these scientists
- [00:03:27.480]very accomplished in their fields.
- [00:03:29.220]This is a huge honor.
- [00:03:31.890]I was named to AAAS as a fellow myself in 2015.
- [00:03:36.240]I consider it one of the greatest honors of my career.
- [00:03:40.140]So, very proud of both Dr. Khalimonchuk
- [00:03:44.130]and Dr. Wilson on being named to this year's class
- [00:03:47.370]of the American Association
- [00:03:48.570]for the Advancement of Science Fellow Award.
- [00:03:50.880]Well, congratulations to both of those gentlemen.
