- [00:00:00.750]I'm Andy Belser,
- [00:00:01.920]Dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
- [00:00:05.847](upbeat music)
- [00:00:11.610]I absolutely love this job.
- [00:00:13.380]I love this university.
- [00:00:14.670]It's a very special place, and the college is really great.
- [00:00:18.120]I really love the people I work with.
- [00:00:20.360](upbeat music)
- [00:00:23.910]One of the things that's on our plate as a college
- [00:00:27.480]is focusing the arts
- [00:00:30.030]on engaging with the world,
- [00:00:33.570]and teaching artists that engagement,
- [00:00:37.620]just learning that relationship with your community
- [00:00:40.560]or audience is really important.
- [00:00:43.020]It turns out
- [00:00:43.860]that Nebraska really treats their extension programs
- [00:00:46.680]as an engagement with the university.
- [00:00:48.990]So we already have an infrastructure for this.
- [00:00:51.660]So we're developing some engagement strategies
- [00:00:54.570]that are really, hopefully, going to be quite prominent
- [00:00:59.400]and nationally to say, look,
- [00:01:01.800]here's how arts colleges can use extension,
- [00:01:05.580]can partner with extension.
- [00:01:08.615](bell dings)
- [00:01:15.000]Meditation is focusing my awareness on my thoughts.
- [00:01:19.740]So there's no "omm" there's, I don't, I don't,
- [00:01:23.490]it's not for me, a religious practice.
- [00:01:26.310]And it's almost as if there's a cinema screen or a,
- [00:01:31.080]you know, and your thoughts are just being constantly
- [00:01:34.230]rolling on it
- [00:01:35.580]and it helps to
- [00:01:38.430]not take them all so seriously (laughs).
- [00:01:42.210]You know, and as a dean, I could worry about everything.
- [00:01:44.820]I mean, it's a lot of things on my plate,
- [00:01:47.490]but it allows me to focus,
- [00:01:49.830]it allows me to shift from one thing to another.
- [00:01:52.440]And it's almost as if, if I don't do it,
- [00:01:55.920]it's like brushing my teeth or, you know, I go, oh my God
- [00:01:58.560]I didn't brush my teeth.
- [00:01:59.400]That's gonna drive me.
- [00:02:00.960]You know, but it, it feels so ordinary to me.
- [00:02:04.680]Like there's something not special about it.
- [00:02:07.350]It just feels like, oh, I know what that place is.
- [00:02:09.420]I can just go there.
- [00:02:10.857](upbeat music)
