[00:00:05.400]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
[00:00:07.380]We are in the thick of the winter sports season
[00:00:09.930]and boy is it a busy time
[00:00:11.610]and a busy day for Husker Sports, Chancellor.
[00:00:13.950]Well, when you hit the middle to the third part
[00:00:16.560]of January, we've got all of our winter sports teams
[00:00:20.040]competing and today is a typical day of that,
[00:00:23.730]busy day in Husker Sports.
[00:00:25.170]Our bowlers are at a tournament in New Jersey.
[00:00:27.300]Our rifle teams competing, swimming and diving,
[00:00:29.520]and track and field, both kicked off competitions at home
[00:00:32.670]in Lincoln this morning.
[00:00:34.200]Men's basketball here at Penn State, and tonight
[00:00:36.707]men's tennis and women's gymnastics, both at home
[00:00:41.160]with meets at home and our men's gymnastics teams
[00:00:43.380]over in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Academy competing.
[00:00:46.650]So go Big Red to all of our
[00:00:49.860]student athletes that are out at home and on the road.
[00:00:52.800]We talk a lot about the athletics
[00:00:54.660]and we're a part of the Big 10, the highest levels of that.
[00:00:57.420]Husker students are also, they're learning
[00:00:59.580]at the highest levels, even presenting some research
[00:01:02.310]at the US strategic command up in Bellevue.
[00:01:05.220]How did the students get that opportunity?
[00:01:07.950]Well, we do have a lot of tremendous
[00:01:10.290]experiential learning opportunities
[00:01:13.050]for our students since one of our hallmarks
[00:01:15.030]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
[00:01:16.620]is our students are engaged
[00:01:18.210]in experiential learning opportunities and recently
[00:01:22.006]26 of our Husker Honors students presented research
[00:01:25.920]to the US Strategic Command officials
[00:01:28.170]at Office Air Force Base in Bellevue.
[00:01:31.560]The student-led presentation was the latest
[00:01:33.990]that's in a years-long partnership
[00:01:35.730]that we have with US Strategic Commands deterrence
[00:01:39.240]and Assurance Academic Alliance
[00:01:41.400]and the National Security Studies Program here at UNL
[00:01:45.240]that is in our political science department
[00:01:47.220]run by Tyler White, professor here in political science.
[00:01:51.600]Four student groups that made those presentations
[00:01:54.900]covered topics ranging from the crisis
[00:01:57.660]in Ukraine with Russia, as well as to Finland and Sweden's
[00:02:02.880]recent accession to join NATO.
[00:02:05.040]It was of course linked to that Russia-Ukraine crisis.
[00:02:10.440]It's just an excellent example of our students
[00:02:12.660]engaging with an outside stakeholder, in this case,
[00:02:15.390]one of the most important stakeholders out there
[00:02:18.420]at the US Military's most important mission set
[00:02:21.600]just happening to be 40 miles up the road here
[00:02:24.180]from our campus in Bellevue.
[00:02:26.400]We've had a lot of students go through this process
[00:02:28.770]and as a consequence of it, decide to change
[00:02:31.470]their career pathway into the national security field.
[00:02:35.140]I mentioned Tyler White who leads this program.
[00:02:38.640]Our director of our national securities program
[00:02:41.670]teaches a course with these students,
[00:02:44.014]mutually assured destruction, deterrents and assurance,
[00:02:47.580]the politics of nuclear weapons as well as
[00:02:50.162]global change makers,
[00:02:52.530]a separate course that they take as well.
[00:02:55.620]The STRATCOM folks were thoroughly impressed
[00:02:59.340]with our students.
[00:03:00.540]These were the first students back to STRATCOM since
[00:03:03.300]before Covid in 2019.
[00:03:05.730]So they were one of the first groups to be able to see
[00:03:08.010]inside the new US Strategic Command headquarters
[00:03:11.490]building there in Bellevue.
[00:03:13.530]Just very proud of them and proud of Tyler
[00:03:16.350]and the work he's doing
[00:03:17.490]with the students in our national security program.
