- [00:00:36.870]A mentor is someone
- [00:00:38.850]who is there to help out their mentees.
- [00:00:41.355]Whenever they need help and guidance,
- [00:00:43.659]you are there to provide it for them.
- [00:00:45.780]Some of the things we have to do as LC Mentors are
- [00:00:49.320]we host study hours
- [00:00:51.090]as well as we just plan some fun events
- [00:00:52.490]so that way our mentees can have some de-stress
- [00:00:55.860]in their busy first semester of college.
- [00:00:58.020]So as a mentor, mainly what I do is I gather my students
- [00:01:01.260]and I give them opportunities,
- [00:01:02.093]real world opportunities in the field.
- [00:01:04.230]What their major is, what their interest is,
- [00:01:05.856]and trying to get them connected into the community.
- [00:01:08.640]But other than that,
- [00:01:09.473]we try to build their relationships as a learning community
- [00:01:12.074]where they live.
- [00:01:13.380]So my learning community for instance, lives in Able 11
- [00:01:15.862]and my goal is to get them
- [00:01:17.520]to build relationships with one another
- [00:01:19.110]so that way they can have those connections
- [00:01:22.260]furthering on in the field.
- [00:01:23.700]Just building relationships,
- [00:01:24.930]getting them connections in the field,
- [00:01:26.820]getting them applied their first year of college,
- [00:01:29.130]giving them a headstart.
- [00:01:30.570]One of the events that we planned this semester
- [00:01:33.030]for the chemistry learning community
- [00:01:34.080]was a research symposium.
- [00:01:36.338]So what we did is I brought in a few professors
- [00:01:38.670]and they worked with the students
- [00:01:39.688]to create little research presentations
- [00:01:42.060]on some different techniques that they would use in labs
- [00:01:43.984]or like in their professions in the future.
- [00:01:46.590]So basically our main major role is
- [00:01:49.080]just to help the students learn what their major is
- [00:01:52.083]and how to apply it.
- [00:02:00.750]My favorite part about being a mentor
- [00:02:03.120]is the peer connections I make.
- [00:02:05.456]I love eating dinner with my mentees.
- [00:02:08.100]I see 'em all the time on campus
- [00:02:09.870]and they're like friendly faces I get to see.
- [00:02:11.877]Also, I like the relationships
- [00:02:14.040]I've created with the staff and faculty members here at UNL,
- [00:02:17.100]and these relationships will last me
- [00:02:18.750]longer than I will be here at UNL.
- [00:02:21.300]Favorite part is the relationships I've built
- [00:02:23.010]with the students.
- [00:02:24.060]I really wasn't expecting to get to know them that well
- [00:02:26.010]but I feel like I've been able to get to know all of them
- [00:02:28.875]on a very personal level.
- [00:02:29.880]I get to see them every week
- [00:02:31.440]between the events and the floor hours
- [00:02:33.150]and we just, we have a lot of fun.
- [00:02:35.010]We've had game nights, movie nights, stuff like that
- [00:02:38.440]and get to know them in a much more personal level
- [00:02:39.570]than you normally would in a role like this, I think.
- [00:02:42.210]My favorite part about being a mentor
- [00:02:44.520]is definitely I just gotta have a lot of fun with my job.
- [00:02:47.700]My coworkers are so amazing
- [00:02:49.830]and so fantastic and fun to work with,
- [00:02:51.116]as well as my mentees.
- [00:02:52.690]They are a really fun group of kids
- [00:02:55.320]and it's their first time in college
- [00:02:58.200]and so we get that connection with them
- [00:03:00.240]because you haven't been in college
- [00:03:02.130]for necessarily that much longer than them.
- [00:03:04.470]So it's a really nice fun way to bond as students
- [00:03:06.990]and it's enjoyable.
- [00:03:14.340]I wish I would've known
- [00:03:15.188]how much I would've needed to know about other majors.
- [00:03:18.630]My LC is a lot of majors that are outside of my expertise,
- [00:03:23.580]but my biggest advice is
- [00:03:25.080]don't be afraid to go to your fellow coworkers
- [00:03:27.240]for what their advice to them would be.
- [00:03:30.570]Because they might have a better answer than you would.
- [00:03:34.110]Don't expect every mentee to be as involved
- [00:03:37.260]as your most involved mentees.
- [00:03:38.869]A lot of the times these students,
- [00:03:40.530]they have lives outside of the learning community
- [00:03:43.140]and we try to respect that.
- [00:03:45.000]And I've been very fortunate
- [00:03:46.620]that my learning community has been
- [00:03:48.150]the most involved learning community
- [00:03:50.340]I've seen in a long time,
- [00:03:51.870]my own included when I was in the learning communities.
- [00:03:54.032]Just the amount of involvement that they have.
- [00:03:57.000]I'm very fortunate.
- [00:03:58.290]But don't take it too hard on yourself
- [00:03:59.760]if there's one student that isn't getting involved
- [00:04:02.190]as the other students
- [00:04:03.300]and just recognizing that's not your fault
- [00:04:04.627]and just understanding that
- [00:04:06.840]not everyone's gonna be as involved,
- [00:04:08.310]and be grateful for the ones that are involved.
- [00:04:15.510]One benefit for being a peer mentor
- [00:04:18.120]is the connections that you make with the facility members,
- [00:04:20.774]your fellow mentors, also your mentees
- [00:04:27.060]and the other faculty and staff that you meet
- [00:04:29.716]as well as prominent members here at the UNL'S campus
- [00:04:34.398]and in Lincoln.
- [00:04:36.000]Also, one good thing that you get is three meal swipes.
- [00:04:39.570]As long as you remember to say that
- [00:04:41.790]you're using an admin swipe.
- [00:04:43.500]The best part about being a mentor
- [00:04:44.760]is the connections that you build in the LC.
- [00:04:47.721]Whether that's the staff in the LC,
- [00:04:50.460]the foundation your learning community is based in
- [00:04:52.442]or the college.
- [00:04:54.030]Just building your circle early in your college life
- [00:04:57.330]is super crucial
- [00:04:58.350]and we get to do that not only as mentee mentors,
- [00:05:01.200]but mentees as well.
- [00:05:02.100]They get to do that.
- [00:05:03.030]Plus the food benefits are great as well
- [00:05:04.639]and you get to build a flexible schedule,
- [00:05:06.780]not, there's not too much stress with it.
- [00:05:08.400]It's an easygoing job that I enjoy.
- [00:05:10.620]I get paid to do it
- [00:05:11.460]and I get to build those connections
- [00:05:12.720]and help these freshmen through their first year of college.
