[00:00:08.790]We've talked to several Huskers, student athletes have had
[00:00:11.310]an opportunity to compete for the Team USA
[00:00:14.130]and their various sports, and just last week,
[00:00:16.380]a Husker freshman added her name to this illustrious list.
[00:00:19.890]What does this say about some of the caliber
[00:00:21.930]of our great student athletes here?
[00:00:23.100]Well, Greg, you know, we are very fortunate
[00:00:25.290]in Nebraska that over the years,
[00:00:26.670]we've had a lot of our student athletes go on to compete
[00:00:30.390]for the US, and internationally, and lots of different ways
[00:00:34.830]and including the Olympics.
[00:00:35.910]You'll remember really well this last time
[00:00:37.710]how well we were represented.
[00:00:40.200]And now we have Husker freshman, Jillian Martin,
[00:00:43.560]who was crowned the nation's top amateur bowler
[00:00:46.630]by winning her division in that competition
[00:00:49.920]at the 2023 National Amateur Bowling Championships
[00:00:52.860]just last weekend.
[00:00:54.300]And she claimed to spot through that win
[00:00:56.460]on the 2023 Team USA.
[00:00:59.580]Yo, we know more about bowling
[00:01:01.230]here than most institutions do
[00:01:02.700]because of the long term success of our bowling team
[00:01:05.340]and our Husker bowlers,
[00:01:06.330]but I know they will say that winning team USA trials
[00:01:09.942]is just as difficult as winning the title on the PBA Tour.
[00:01:14.003]So a real, real big accomplishment for Jillian,
[00:01:17.130]just as a freshman, again, and a phenomenal achievement
[00:01:21.270]for her and an opportunity to represent the US
[00:01:23.800]on the international sage on Team USA.

[00:01:27.740]We've talked a lot about how Nebraska
[00:01:29.820]is a land grant institution, and research continues
[00:01:32.970]to develop critical knowledge
[00:01:34.410]to our great rancher and farming friends out there.
[00:01:37.350]Often it's in the ways to help them increase their yield
[00:01:39.870]but some new research is looking at ways
[00:01:41.490]to improve agriculture in another way.
[00:01:43.500]What can you tell us about this?
[00:01:45.120]Well, Greg we certainly have
[00:01:47.430]that reputation internationally as a leader in ag
[00:01:49.830]and life sciences, research work and application
[00:01:52.920]of that research work into the field
[00:01:54.960]and have had for a long time here at Nebraska.
[00:01:57.960]You know, and as we look out to the challenges
[00:02:00.180]that face the world and feeding the world, you know,
[00:02:03.240]longer term as population continues to grow
[00:02:05.940]around the world.
[00:02:07.040]Improving agriculture, not just in yield
[00:02:10.110]but in quality of food products is also crucial.
[00:02:14.743]So helping to improve not just how much we get,
[00:02:18.330]but that the quality of that yield is of value.
[00:02:23.940]And we are very fortunate here
[00:02:26.220]that we have an agronomist
[00:02:27.720]in our Department of Agronomy and Horticulture,
[00:02:29.730]Harkamal Walia, who recently has teamed
[00:02:32.910]with computer scientist Hongfeng Yu
[00:02:34.770]and his team here on campus.
[00:02:36.480]And together they have developed HyperSeed.
[00:02:40.650]It's an imaging system that uses light wave lengths
[00:02:43.950]to measure characteristics of seed.
[00:02:46.590]Think of it as the nutritional fingerprint of each seed
[00:02:50.190]that goes into production.
[00:02:52.266]And as a means of doing that, they're able
[00:02:55.616]to look at the seed's nutritional characteristics,
[00:02:58.740]like moisture content, and nitrogen levels,
[00:03:01.050]and starch content, and can do it much faster.
[00:03:03.960]What used to require months to do,
[00:03:06.660]they now have innovated to do that in seconds.
[00:03:09.690]So we're very pleased about that.
[00:03:12.120]It's somewhat similar to the imaging system that you see
[00:03:16.110]when you pass in Nebraska Innovation Campus,
[00:03:18.630]that's designed for full plants.
[00:03:20.989]This now hyperseed imaging allows you to do high resolution
[00:03:25.140]for nutritional characteristics of seeds at that level,
[00:03:29.130]it's homegrown software.
[00:03:30.540]We produced it here, it's open source and available now
[00:03:34.260]around the world, allowing others
[00:03:36.180]to customize their future research.
[00:03:38.010]So great work by Harkamal and his team to develop HyperSeed.
[00:03:43.080]Fantastic and interesting, interesting for stuff
