[00:00:07.366]Our teams, as you will know,
[00:00:08.970]is connected to emerging media arts,
[00:00:11.160]and today I'd like to share a few of the apps I use
[00:00:14.940]to try and get into the emerging media arts.
[00:00:20.220]For me, emerging media arts is a way to mix up
[00:00:25.890]and really creatively think about your product.
[00:00:28.740]The product can actually start as a two-dimensional,
[00:00:32.310]or a classic art product,
[00:00:34.050]especially visual,
[00:00:35.400]it can be a 3D object or a 2D object.
[00:00:38.610]And what the emerging media part does is
[00:00:41.550]it really helps mix it up
[00:00:43.050]and create something different
[00:00:45.930]that you can share.
[00:00:47.790]What I love about the apps that I'm gonna show is the fact
[00:00:50.910]that they are really a great entry point to this world.
[00:00:56.550]So they're easy to use,
[00:00:57.990]they produce something fairly quickly,
[00:01:00.270]and, as a result,
[00:01:01.620]we can help kids and ourselves start experimenting.
[00:01:05.070]The reason I'm sharing these three is
[00:01:06.750]these are the ones I start with,
[00:01:08.670]and I love the kind of things they can do.
[00:01:11.160]It's just complicated enough
[00:01:12.720]while being incredibly accessible at an entry point.
[00:01:16.500]So let's go first with FlipaClip.
[00:01:22.560]So this is FlipaClip,
[00:01:23.880]which is kind of a funny name.
[00:01:25.500]And this is the education version.
[00:01:27.180]And what this allows to do is the classic flipbook,
[00:01:31.200]just digital,
[00:01:32.760]and it has some fantastic features to it,
[00:01:35.340]and one of them is the way it's created.
[00:01:38.010]So I will show you something,
[00:01:39.870]for example like this,
[00:01:41.370]so you can bring in a background.
[00:01:43.950]In this case, we're bringing in a background
[00:01:46.830]that allows you to have something to work with.
[00:01:50.580]And then you create a shape.
[00:01:52.710]In this case, I created a little red shape,
[00:01:55.410]you can see that there.
[00:01:57.000]And, the advantage is,
[00:01:59.280]as you can see the frames,
[00:02:00.720]I'm creating something very small,
[00:02:02.880]because I'm experimenting,
[00:02:04.710]and I will show you what happen.
[00:02:06.540]So you can see where the last two images were,
[00:02:10.920]so you're very clear about where you were,
[00:02:13.170]and you can just recreate them very quickly.
[00:02:15.270]All you have to do is press on that plus,
[00:02:17.160]you can see where the last one was.
[00:02:19.170]So if you want to create the next one,
[00:02:21.060]you just create it here.
[00:02:24.690]You can edit it,
[00:02:25.650]so I can erase it a little bit, and say,
[00:02:28.260]no, I want it a little bit smaller,
[00:02:30.840]I can use a different color,
[00:02:32.670]and I can even add a text.
[00:02:34.530]So now I've got an eighth one,
[00:02:36.810]you can add music,
[00:02:38.220]although I think that when you're playing
[00:02:39.810]with something like this,
[00:02:40.830]you just wanna go,
[00:02:41.850]and on the right-hand side,
[00:02:43.200]you just make it go.
[00:02:44.220]And the animation happens,
[00:02:46.110]and if I want to add more frames,
[00:02:48.150]you can.
[00:02:48.983]So this can start just by playing
[00:02:50.970]and see how a flipbook works,
[00:02:52.800]and then you can add complexity.
[00:02:55.290]And, again, what I love is
[00:02:56.730]I can go back here and add an element.

[00:03:43.890]you can animate.

[00:03:47.220]when you go back,
[00:03:48.750]and you can see there are different projects we've created,

[00:03:52.080]I actually love this background,
[00:03:54.480]and one of our teachers created this one.
[00:03:59.700]And so I'd like to show you this one.
[00:04:04.890]And I love the crinkly paper,
[00:04:06.690]it gives it a little bit of a texture.
[00:04:09.030]And you can see that this was created
[00:04:12.690]in about seven minutes or so.
[00:04:14.940]Very quick, snappy kind of an animation.
[00:04:20.310]And all the basics of animation are right here.
[00:04:23.670]The sequence,
[00:04:24.870]the idea that you need to tell some kind of story,
[00:04:27.990]something has to happen or it gets really, really boring,
[00:04:30.690]but you get that notion of movement very, very quickly,
[00:04:33.660]and you can actually dictate how many frames per second,
[00:04:36.780]which allows you to really control the pace
[00:04:40.830]and how intricate you want it to be.
[00:04:43.020]But, again, what I love is,
[00:04:45.360]more than anything else,
[00:04:46.740]for somebody like me who does not draw very consistently,
[00:04:50.190]is the fact that every time I want to create a new frame,
[00:04:53.850]I see the old frame,
[00:04:54.930]so I can just inch it a little bit,
[00:04:56.910]I can actually just draw over it
[00:04:59.460]and make sure that that happens.
[00:05:01.950]And, as a result,
[00:05:03.510]you get this very quick option to create an animation.
[00:05:10.530]You can also export it as a movie
[00:05:12.450]and then share it in other means,
[00:05:15.000]or you can leave it inside the app.
[00:05:16.680]So this one was FlipaClip.
[00:05:18.660]The other one that I love is Metascan.
[00:05:20.460]Metascan is magical.
[00:05:22.350]It is meant to be,
[00:05:23.370]and there's a whole host of apps like that
[00:05:26.370]that are designed to capture 3D images.
[00:05:30.210]What I love about this is
[00:05:31.830]if you give it just not enough information,
[00:05:35.700]just enough to create something,
[00:05:37.200]but not enough to create a full authentic picture,
[00:05:40.350]you are actually getting some magical, magical structure.
[00:05:43.470]So I'll show you how you'd do this.
[00:05:45.090]You start a new project,
[00:05:46.650]and what it'll ask you to do is take a lot of photos
[00:05:49.830]of the room you're trying to create 3D.
[00:05:53.250]So I'm using this cup,
[00:05:54.600]and I just walk around and create lots of photos.
[00:06:00.330]You have to create about 30 photos of that object,
[00:06:04.590]or that area,
[00:06:05.910]to have anything be able to render.
[00:06:08.430]So you take lots of photos,
[00:06:09.690]which is kind of fun on its own,
[00:06:12.030]and you gotta use different angles.
[00:06:15.400]And obviously, because it's on a table,
[00:06:16.950]I'm not gonna take photos from the bottom,
[00:06:19.350]and that's fine.
[00:06:20.820]But what you'll see is it'll also capture the room
[00:06:24.810]around it.
[00:06:25.643]So this is not just the object,
[00:06:27.090]everything is there.
[00:06:28.830]And now you can see all the images.
[00:06:31.290]And I'm asking to process,
[00:06:33.030]obviously, you can get a full version
[00:06:34.680]that costs some money,
[00:06:36.600]but I find this version actually the imperfection
[00:06:40.410]of the relatively few photos
[00:06:44.850]and the imperfection of the not-perfect processing
[00:06:50.730]creates really, really interesting images
[00:06:54.120]that then you can explore and decide how you wanna do it.
[00:06:56.880]So this is going to take a while,
[00:06:59.700]and we're just gonna wait it out,
[00:07:03.030]and you can close the screen and do something else
[00:07:05.520]while this is happening,
[00:07:06.570]it's processing.
[00:07:08.160]You can do this, by the way, with the phone,
[00:07:09.720]you can do this with your iPad.
[00:07:11.940]I'm using the iPad because it's easier to project,
[00:07:14.700]and the images are a little bit clearer on mine at least.
[00:07:19.230]But a phone would work just as well.
[00:07:22.170]And so now we're completely processed,
[00:07:24.990]and that may take a little bit longer,
[00:07:26.790]or a little bit shorter.
[00:07:28.290]And you can see this is a very large image,
[00:07:30.630]and you already can see,
[00:07:32.100]it captures,
[00:07:32.933]but it captures just what the camera saw,
[00:07:35.220]and it's trying to conform it to reality.
[00:07:39.480]And you can see that you can rotate this,
[00:07:43.380]and see part of the room I'm in,
[00:07:47.160]but really creating this funky structures.
[00:07:51.660]And then the focus on this cup is really fascinating,
[00:07:57.000]because the cup actually has,
[00:07:59.100]I don't know if you can see it, it has this handle,
[00:08:01.500]but because of the angles,
[00:08:03.090]that kind of merges into the cup and creates this structure
[00:08:07.440]that you can play around with.
[00:08:09.630]So the first thing that really I love about this is
[00:08:13.140]you just create this image that you can play with
[00:08:15.780]and really think about what angle do you want to choose,
[00:08:20.130]where is it meaningful,
[00:08:22.530]this top view with that effect,
[00:08:27.150]that smudge effect is really fascinating to me
[00:08:29.850]with some fractals happening all around some shapes.
[00:08:33.510]But the other thing you can do is
[00:08:35.400]you can actually edit it a little bit,
[00:08:39.030]and think about what the direction is,
[00:08:41.340]you can shrink the photo so it focuses on a specific area
[00:08:47.040]and it takes that extra stuff away.
[00:08:51.060]And eventually, again,
[00:08:52.230]you can share it,
[00:08:53.130]even in the basic version,
[00:08:54.960]you can share a video that rotates around that image,
[00:09:00.300]or you can share just a photo,
[00:09:04.410]and you can scan it in different ways,
[00:09:07.380]you can send it,
[00:09:08.280]so, even in the free version,
[00:09:10.230]you can create this kind of thing
[00:09:12.300]that shows this image and you can make sure
[00:09:16.860]that it's close enough,
[00:09:18.300]and you can see that you're going around
[00:09:22.020]and you can change your background,
[00:09:24.390]so you can play with it a little bit,
[00:09:25.830]and you can see how that changes the effect
[00:09:27.600]almost immediately and create a scene.
[00:09:31.170]And one of the things that I usually do is
[00:09:34.560]slow it down considerably
[00:09:36.720]because you wanna focus on the image.
[00:09:38.520]So this is Metascan.
[00:09:40.740]It's creating magical, magical images.
[00:09:43.620]It creates a 3D kind of object,
[00:09:46.260]or really captures 3D kind of object,
[00:09:49.200]but transforms it in ways that can be incredibly interesting
[00:09:54.060]and really make us think about how we perceive objects,
[00:09:57.840]but also how we can take physical object
[00:10:00.420]and make them into something else.
[00:10:02.460]The last app I wanted to talk about is
[00:10:04.740]Creative Commons Express.
[00:10:06.330]And this is a way to rearrange some of our visual materials.
[00:10:11.940]And these are some that I created.
[00:10:14.160]So, this is the collage,
[00:10:15.960]which is my favorite thing.
[00:10:17.790]I have this cowboy thing going,
[00:10:19.500]and so I have my own hat,
[00:10:21.420]but I've collected a couple of images,
[00:10:23.850]started to arrange them,
[00:10:25.920]and it's a really good way to take some things
[00:10:28.890]that you are thinking about.
[00:10:30.600]Or in the case of our journals,
[00:10:33.180]you can take the written piece with a journal,
[00:10:35.730]and then overlay it with images,
[00:10:38.460]and really create a thoughtful piece quickly.
[00:10:42.600]And let me just show you how to create a new one
[00:10:44.820]just so you can see what it might look like.
[00:10:48.240]So you can bring into the project,
[00:10:52.260]you can go home and there are lots of ways
[00:10:54.600]to think about this.
[00:10:55.433]And, again, I love the collages.
[00:10:58.110]So you can do a collage that has a predetermined shape,
[00:11:03.240]or you can use something that they have created.
[00:11:06.030]Let's start from scratch and create a layout.
[00:11:09.330]Let's say we love this specific layout.
[00:11:13.410]And then you can bring to any of them any of your photos.
[00:11:17.430]So you can bring in,
[00:11:22.320]you can add a photo,
[00:11:25.710]you go to your photo library,
[00:11:27.420]or to your camera so you can capture anything,
[00:11:30.510]this is from our team,
[00:11:31.620]so I will use some of that.
[00:11:33.450]And this,
[00:11:34.410]we've added two,
[00:11:36.450]and now we can play with the actual dimensions,
[00:11:43.200]directions,
[00:11:44.730]and really create a structure
[00:11:49.410]that eventually ends up being something like this.
[00:11:54.030]So this is one of them.
[00:11:55.950]And then we can bring another picture,
[00:11:58.590]and you can see the process,
[00:12:00.870]again, really, really easy.
[00:12:02.970]Creative Commons Express allows you
[00:12:05.100]to create these really interesting collages
[00:12:08.640]that can start with children's or with students' images,
[00:12:12.840]and the work they're doing,
[00:12:15.390]take their journal entries, for example,
[00:12:19.830]and add and layer them and then mix them
[00:12:22.620]and make them into a digital product.
[00:12:25.260]So these are three really easy ways
[00:12:28.710]to create digital products,
[00:12:31.230]emerging media,
[00:12:32.850]starting with physical objects
[00:12:34.860]that our students are creating,
[00:12:36.300]whether it's their journals,
[00:12:37.650]it's visual creations or even 3D creations.
