- [00:00:05.520]Hi and welcome to their Art Teams podcast
- [00:00:08.730]and today what I'd like to do is talk a little bit
- [00:00:11.100]about the work we've done over the summer and what are some
- [00:00:13.890]of the results that we're finding from our evaluations.
- [00:00:16.740]This is a little bit more technical than usual.
- [00:00:19.050]This is not so much of a show and tell.
- [00:00:21.300]This is really us sharing our research results,
- [00:00:24.690]so you can start seeing what impact the work
- [00:00:27.540]we're doing is having on the teachers we're working with.
- [00:00:30.990]Later on as we gather more evidence
- [00:00:33.450]we will talk also about the impact on students.
- [00:00:36.270]So the first thing to know is we've spent two
- [00:00:38.940]very intensive weeks in the summer with our teachers
- [00:00:43.290]and we've worked on their EMA project
- [00:00:47.880]or the Emerging Media Arts project.
- [00:00:50.550]We've worked on curriculum and how does teaching
- [00:00:53.310]for understanding, for example, merges with this work.
- [00:00:56.580]And of course, we worked on developing the inquiry journals
- [00:01:00.750]and so teachers have had a lot of time with us.
- [00:01:04.170]We worked from in the morning all the way
- [00:01:06.030]until the afternoon, and teachers were fantastic
- [00:01:08.190]during this time because they've actually stayed extra time.
- [00:01:11.160]There was really a sense that we're working together
- [00:01:14.250]in fantastic ways, and what we set out to do
- [00:01:17.460]as part of our research is to see what impact
- [00:01:20.460]does it have on our teachers.
- [00:01:23.850]So first, let me tell you a few things about our teachers.
- [00:01:26.520]We've had 15 educators in this group.
- [00:01:29.316]On top of that, we've had artists and museum educators.
- [00:01:33.150]So this is a fairly large group
- [00:01:36.473]and our classroom teachers where half of them
- [00:01:38.490]were art teachers, half of them came from a domain
- [00:01:40.890]that is not art what we're there to learn
- [00:01:43.110]how to integrate the arts.
- [00:01:44.730]And as a result of that, we've looked at how they've grown
- [00:01:48.930]exactly in that in the ability to integrate art
- [00:01:52.050]into their practice.
- [00:01:54.120]The other thing to know about our teachers
- [00:01:55.890]is that there was a real distribution of experience.
- [00:02:00.210]So the average years of experience for our teachers
- [00:02:03.210]was 12 but we had everything from brand new teachers
- [00:02:06.510]all the way to veteran teachers with 20 years
- [00:02:09.750]or more of experience.
- [00:02:11.340]So it was a really flat distribution
- [00:02:13.530]which is exactly what we aimed to do.
- [00:02:15.330]We wanted to get a cross section of the teacher workforce.
- [00:02:20.010]The second thing is, the average time
- [00:02:22.320]in their current position was about six years.
- [00:02:25.290]Again, this is average, which means we've had, again
- [00:02:28.080]new teachers who are 0, 1 or 2 years in their position.
- [00:02:32.160]But we've had a lot of teachers who've had more time
- [00:02:34.470]in their position, and that means
- [00:02:36.150]that they could learn from each other, get the energy
- [00:02:39.390]of young teachers who are looking for new ways
- [00:02:42.060]but also the experience and the ability to explore
- [00:02:45.840]and to know what's possible from our more veteran teachers.
- [00:02:49.290]So this is a little bit about the teachers.
- [00:02:52.380]When we look at the measures, we looked at what has happened
- [00:02:56.640]during the summer with a number of measures.
- [00:02:58.650]We've had quantitative measures, mostly through surveys
- [00:03:01.830]and we looked at self-efficacy to teach
- [00:03:05.370]and to reach the hardest to reach students.
- [00:03:08.400]We also used self-efficacy for arts integration.
- [00:03:11.670]So how confident were they to integrate the arts
- [00:03:14.490]in other domains?
- [00:03:15.600]So for art teachers, it was really about
- [00:03:17.790]how can you bring the other domains into your teaching?
- [00:03:20.430]And for the non-art teachers
- [00:03:22.050]it was how do you bring art into your practice?
- [00:03:24.780]But both were asked about that.
- [00:03:26.550]We also looked at two other features
- [00:03:28.950]which we didn't expect a lot from during the summer
- [00:03:32.820]and that is collective self-efficacy.
- [00:03:34.680]That is the sense of how do we as a school,
- [00:03:38.730]feel like we can meet all students need.
- [00:03:41.490]And the other one is sense of belonging in schools
- [00:03:44.040]which we know for teachers is really important,
- [00:03:46.290]especially after the pandemic,
- [00:03:48.298]those two we didn't expect a lot on
- [00:03:50.790]because this work in the summer was with individual teachers
- [00:03:53.820]or a teacher with a partner, not with the whole school.
- [00:03:56.760]So they might actually have a great collective self-efficacy
- [00:04:00.780]but we didn't expect it to change over the summer
- [00:04:02.940]because they didn't work with our school.
- [00:04:05.400]And so those were the quantitative measures.
- [00:04:07.680]On the qualitative measures, we simply interviewed
- [00:04:09.930]our teachers and also asked for written comments
- [00:04:13.530]that were anonymous to learn what mattered
- [00:04:16.140]and what were the most influential thing
- [00:04:18.360]that happened over the summer.
- [00:04:19.740]So now let's get into the results.
- [00:04:22.710]So when we look at what has changed
- [00:04:25.470]in the quantitative measures,
- [00:04:27.090]you can see that we had two significant results.
- [00:04:29.730]We had teacher self-efficacy to reach all students
- [00:04:32.610]has grown significantly.
- [00:04:34.590]And the second piece was the self-efficacy
- [00:04:37.620]to work with arts integration.
- [00:04:40.620]Those are the two areas we expected to see change
- [00:04:43.080]and we did see growth in both of them over the summer.
- [00:04:46.350]The other two collective efficacy and sense of belonging,
- [00:04:49.350]again, I mentioned we didn't expect much
- [00:04:51.450]and we didn't get much, which actually gives me confidence
- [00:04:54.900]that that growth was not a result of just a positive bias
- [00:04:58.620]where the teachers liked us therefore they responded well
- [00:05:01.080]to the survey.
- [00:05:02.700]When we look at the quantitative results.
- [00:05:07.530]So we are going to keep monitoring
- [00:05:10.890]and to see how this progresses over time.
- [00:05:14.310]When we go to the qualitative results, we really found out
- [00:05:18.000]some really interesting things that we want to share
- [00:05:22.170]with you.
- [00:05:23.640]And the first one is that movement
- [00:05:27.300]which was not part of our original plan, but did happen out
- [00:05:31.320]of the sense that teachers needed in a long day some kind
- [00:05:35.430]of a physical relief, but also a way to collect themselves.
- [00:05:40.200]Given two very hard year in education in the last few years,
- [00:05:45.540]we integrated movement.
- [00:05:47.640]Maggie has created some videos that we will share with you
- [00:05:51.330]about the sense of movement and how it plays out.
- [00:05:54.120]And that was one of the things the teachers felt
- [00:05:56.910]was most successful in helping them stay focused
- [00:05:59.970]but also helping them really rethink their relationship
- [00:06:05.490]with teaching and with their students.
- [00:06:07.410]So that was really the way I think about it is
- [00:06:10.530]movement is magic and it really had a positive impact
- [00:06:15.660]and it changed the way we thought about the way we integrate
- [00:06:18.480]and the way we think about emerging mini arts
- [00:06:20.820]to incorporate this larger sense of product.
- [00:06:24.600]The second thing that teachers have mentioned
- [00:06:26.820]is the time to reflect and think through what have we done,
- [00:06:32.850]why are we doing it, how does it change the way I think
- [00:06:36.390]and the way I'm going to act was critical.
- [00:06:39.660]This is not new, but what the power of our teams
- [00:06:44.100]was that we got the teachers together
- [00:06:46.140]and then provided the time and the space
- [00:06:48.180]without too much dictation of how do we use our time.
- [00:06:52.470]There was daily time for a thoughtful reflection
- [00:06:57.750]using the inquiry journals.
- [00:06:59.520]So that was another use of the materials.
- [00:07:02.550]And then teachers, really, teachers
- [00:07:05.160]and all of the educators, the art, the teaching artists,
- [00:07:09.300]the museum educators and the classroom teachers
- [00:07:12.810]all appreciated the collaborative community
- [00:07:15.720]where everybody's contributing
- [00:07:17.280]and everybody's learning from each other,
- [00:07:19.020]even if their art practice, for example
- [00:07:21.030]is very much individualized.
- [00:07:22.800]You could just go and watch somebody else's process of art.
- [00:07:27.120]I've learned a lot from different people's processes
- [00:07:29.490]and how they go through it.
- [00:07:30.780]And I created my own version of that.
- [00:07:32.640]It wasn't really copying as much as using that to refund
- [00:07:38.280]and to create my own version of that.
- [00:07:41.504]It's a great way to think about how do we collaborate
- [00:07:44.040]and how do we grow in our sense of artistic making.
- [00:07:48.450]Finally, the things that teachers have mentioned
- [00:07:52.320]and appreciated was access to a studio where
- [00:07:55.470]there are a lot of materials and having tools at all levels
- [00:07:59.910]including digital tool and physical tools, 3D printers
- [00:08:04.890]and jigsaw and all kinds of things
- [00:08:09.000]that allow you to be freer in your creation
- [00:08:11.640]and to open horizons into your creativity.
- [00:08:14.970]So while a lot of our creations were two-dimensional pieces
- [00:08:18.930]of art on our thinking journals, it was also
- [00:08:23.400]that we used materials to create 3D creations
- [00:08:27.420]and digital creations that couldn't be created otherwise.
- [00:08:31.467]And the last piece that teachers mentioned
- [00:08:33.810]and was really important is they appreciated the time
- [00:08:38.996]and space to create a curricular vision
- [00:08:42.090]for their classrooms for the following year.
- [00:08:44.610]And we knew that this was the time to create,
- [00:08:47.040]this was the time to make.
- [00:08:49.627]And that time, just like the time for reflection
- [00:08:52.230]was much appreciated because giving a set of tools
- [00:08:55.170]and then say, now in the time you have left
- [00:08:57.450]until the school year starts, go create your own,
- [00:09:01.410]was not really what teachers were looking for.
- [00:09:04.110]They were looking for also boundaries and say,
- [00:09:07.582]at this point will be ready,
- [00:09:09.990]we will pick this up in the fall, but we also
- [00:09:12.450]get a time to call our own and to really to go on break.
- [00:09:15.750]And we think after the last two years
- [00:09:17.670]the pandemic and the new pressure zone teachers
- [00:09:20.310]this is really crucial to provide the time
- [00:09:24.300]and also to provide the time when things aren't happening
- [00:09:27.120]and people can rest.
- [00:09:29.010]So just to summarize, we had just the expected results
- [00:09:33.630]in our quantitative measures.
- [00:09:35.190]Self-efficacy to teach, to reach all students
- [00:09:38.190]and to teach with arts integrated into other subjects
- [00:09:41.460]definitely went up and significantly so.
- [00:09:43.950]And that is especially important to remember
- [00:09:45.630]that we don't have a huge sample.
- [00:09:48.330]We have a small group of teachers.
- [00:09:50.220]So to get a significant effect, something really meaningful,
- [00:09:53.280]a large effect size had to happen.
- [00:09:55.320]And the second thing is that the qualitative results said,
- [00:09:58.560]given time to reflect, to create and to plan was crucial
- [00:10:06.600]and making sure that there's enough free time
- [00:10:11.220]and not constantly new things coming at you.
- [00:10:13.620]And the second piece is just providing the space
- [00:10:17.070]and the tools to be creative.
- [00:10:19.500]So these are our results from our summer
- [00:10:21.300]and we will keep updating you as we learn new things.
- [00:10:24.420]And we'll see you next time on the Art Teams podcast.
