- [00:00:03.930]In the fall of 1985,
- [00:00:06.390]the one and only University of Nebraska opened
- [00:00:09.150]its land-grant door of opportunity to me
- [00:00:12.330]as an aspiring doctoral candidate.
- [00:00:15.240]I came to Nebraska full of hope, eager
- [00:00:18.870]and brimming with ambition to learn from and be mentored
- [00:00:22.410]by the world's leading quantitative animal geneticists
- [00:00:25.740]on UNL's East Campus and at
- [00:00:28.020]the Roman L. Hruska USDA Meat Animal Research Center.
- [00:00:32.370]Almost immediately on arrival in Lincoln
- [00:00:35.430]I was awestruck by, fell in love with,
- [00:00:39.240]and had the opportunity a year later
- [00:00:42.030]to marry Harvard Nebraska's and UNL's, Jane Pauley.
- [00:00:46.290]Little did we know that it was a genesis
- [00:00:48.780]of a nearly 40 year deep
- [00:00:50.640]and abiding love with and for this great institution
- [00:00:54.810]for us as a couple, and ultimately as a family.
- [00:00:58.320]Our UNL foundation led us on a professional
- [00:01:01.350]and personal journey over these past 37 years
- [00:01:05.700]that has been nothing short of beyond our wildest dreams.
- [00:01:09.930]From Nebraska to Texas, to Colorado, to Kansas,
- [00:01:14.370]to Washington DC and New York, Michigan,
- [00:01:17.580]and around the world,
- [00:01:19.230]we have been blessed to have had the opportunity to
- [00:01:21.810]use our educations to hopefully do good for many.
- [00:01:26.880]22 years ago, I entered the arena
- [00:01:29.850]of public facing leadership
- [00:01:31.410]and service roles when I left the professoriate
- [00:01:34.350]of my chosen field of animal breeding and genetics.
- [00:01:38.250]In 2010, I answered the call to come back to Nebraska
- [00:01:42.870]as the vice chancellor of UNL's IANR,
- [00:01:46.140]and back to Lincoln we came.
- [00:01:48.660]And then ultimately, seven years ago
- [00:01:51.840]I enthusiastically answered the call
- [00:01:54.060]of service to assume the role as your 20th chancellor,
- [00:01:58.020]which as I said at the time was almost too surreal
- [00:02:01.890]to believe for a first generation college educated farm boy
- [00:02:06.630]from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
- [00:02:09.210]Earlier this year, our family spent considerable time
- [00:02:13.110]reflecting on our UNL journey, ultimately coming
- [00:02:16.920]to the realization that while these past 13 years
- [00:02:20.400]have been exciting and exhilarating,
- [00:02:23.160]they also have collectively been taxing on our physical
- [00:02:26.970]and our mental batteries.
- [00:02:28.980]And out of that reflection, we reached the family decision
- [00:02:32.730]that 2023 would be the year for Husker, Jane and I to
- [00:02:36.690]step away from public facing life, to focus our next chapter
- [00:02:41.280]privately on our growing family and our faith.
- [00:02:45.420]So we are sharing today for the first time publicly,
- [00:02:49.320]the news of our plan that I will retire from the role
- [00:02:52.470]of chancellor at the end of June 2023,
- [00:02:56.250]or when my successor is in place for
- [00:02:58.920]a seamless leadership transition.
- [00:03:02.100]We are so immensely proud of
- [00:03:05.010]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:03:07.320]and its entire family of students,
- [00:03:10.080]faculty, staff, and alumni.
- [00:03:13.200]Together, we have done great things and we remain equally
- [00:03:17.610]excited about the months ahead as we continue to
- [00:03:21.180]do big things together.
- [00:03:23.100]And as we together prepare the way for your 21st chancellor.
- [00:03:28.350]Coincidentally, May 2023 will be my 21st commencement as
- [00:03:33.360]your chancellor, and one I will look forward to
- [00:03:36.360]with a very special and literal meaning of celebrating
- [00:03:40.290]with our graduates and their families,
- [00:03:42.480]and personally for us, commencing to our next chapter.
- [00:03:47.760]It has been a distinct calling, a privilege,
- [00:03:51.750]honor and our greatest pleasure to serve our university.
- [00:03:56.850]Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you
- [00:04:00.660]and your families, and cheers to a monumental 2023 ahead.
- [00:04:06.420]And always, go Big Red.
